The morning of September 1st was hectic as
usual. It was the day the kids went back
to school. But that morning was a little
more chaotic than in years past for a few reasons, the biggest one being that
Fred and George tried to pack using magic.
The end result of that was their trunks falling down the stairs and
spilling their contents everywhere.
The other reason was that they were going to have to walk to
Kings Cross in small groups, and therefore had less time to get ready. They usually went by car, but Arthur was no
longer able to borrow a Ministry car, and Moody didn’t want to draw attention
by calling a Muggle taxi. It was a good
thing everyone was already planning on getting up to see the kids off because
with all the screaming they wouldn’t have been able to sleep in anyway.
Once everyone was finally ready to go the kids were divided
up into pairs and assigned an adult guard to walk with them. Harry and Ginny went first with Molly and
Sirius. Sirius was rather glad to get
out of the house. It had taken a while,
but Dumbledore had finally been able to get Fudge to clear Sirius of the murder
charges and not try to have him arrested again for breaking out of
Azkaban.
Harry was enjoying watching his godfather enjoy the fresh
air, but Molly hurried him along. They
made it to the station just in time, and the others were right behind
them. James came onto the platform with
the twins mumbling under his breath and received dirty looks from Moody.
They made it onto the train and Harry and Ginny went to find
a place to sit. Ron and Hermione had to
go to the front of the train with the rest of the Prefects. They found Draco sitting by the window
staring out of it with a blank expression while Pansy sat beside him rambling
on about how great it was to be a Prefect.
She didn’t even notice that Draco wasn’t listening.
He only turned when Ron and Hermione entered the
compartment. A sneer was on his face,
but he gave them a very subtle nod before going back to staring out the
window. He sat as still as a statue
while the Prefects were given instructions on what to do. Then they were sent back to join their
friends but told to patrol every so often to make sure everyone was behaving.
“What’s wrong Draco?” Pansy asked when they reached their
usual compartment. Draco laughed
bitterly. Oh how he wanted to tell her
exactly what was wrong, but he couldn’t.
“Father told me some things…” he answered.
“Oh? What kind of things?” Pansy asked curiously.
“Just stuff about Hogwarts.
Fudge doesn’t think Dumbledore is fit to be Headmaster and he has
plans.”
Pansy snorted. “About
time! For the past four years
Dumbledore’s let Potter run wild. My
mother told me that he used to let Potter Sr. run wild too, and he turned into
a real nutter just like his son is.”
Draco swallowed hard.
While he had to admit James Potter was a little odd, the things Pansy
was saying were downright untrue and hateful.
He could tell it was going to be a long year.
Meanwhile, back at Grimmauld Place,
Lucius came for dinner with a pile of dusty old books. “James, I brought the books you wanted, but
why do you need the school bylaws and rules?”
James took them and smiled.
“Thanks love.” He kissed the
blonde softly. “Do you have anything
else for me?”
Lucius sighed and reached back into his robes. “I have Dolores Umbridge’s Ministry file as
well,” he said as he handed it over.
James’ face lit up like a little kid on Christmas morning as
he took it.
“You really should tell me what I’m risking my job and
reputation for,” Lucius crossed his arms.
“Ammo,” Sirius answered as he entered the hallway with a
steaming cup of tea. “Same reason he
asked for Miss Umbridge’s old school file.”
James nodded excitedly.
“I spent all afternoon looking through it.”
“You mean Dumbledore actually gave it to you?” Lucius asked
surprised.
“Of course he did,” James grinned. “She’s Fudge’s lap dog. We all know she has major plans, and well… the
best defense is a good offense right?”
Lucius shook his head.
“I don’t think I’ll ever understand you.”
“You don’t have to understand me, just love me,” James
grinned as they headed down to the kitchen.
Draco was walking to Potions, his first class on the first
day of school. Crabbe and Goyle followed
closely out of habit, but Draco hadn’t said a word to either of them since the
night before at the feast. He hadn’t
said much to anyone really.
Ever since his father had dropped a bomb on him the summer
before and turned his entire world upside down, he was seeing everything with new
eyes. He found himself wondering how he
could ever have felt at home in Slytherin.
Draco wasn’t a bad person really, he’d just always followed
his father’s lead and did what he thought he was supposed to; and his father
had taught him to uphold the family name and reputation. But now his father was very much in love and
very happy, and Draco had actual friends who weren’t just using him.
Did his father have any idea what he’d done? Draco had spent three years playing the
Slytherin game and climbing to the top, and he had three more years to go in
the snake pit. Giving him a taste of the
better side of life was like giving a man lost in the desert a nearly empty
glass of water. Every time he saw Harry
he wanted to run over to him, but he couldn’t.
It left him feeling very empty.
He passed his secret friends on his way down to the
dungeons, and as usual, had to suppress the urge to say anything to them. He paused for a moment when he noticed Cho
Chang approaching Harry.
Draco knew she’d been Diggory’s girlfriend the previous
year, and he wondered what she wanted with Harry. Draco stopped and leaned against the wall to
watch and listen. Fortunately only his
two companions noticed and didn’t think anything of it. Those two didn’t think at all really.
Draco could tell by Harry’s face that he was smitten with
Cho, and for some reason, that made Draco angry. He couldn’t really put his finger on it, but
he wanted to push that Ravenclaw girl off a cliff.
He rushed ahead to take his usual seat in the Potions lab,
and watched longingly as Harry sat on the other side of the classroom with his
friends. Draco swallowed hard and stared
blankly. Despite everything that had
happened there was still plenty of fire in those deep emerald eyes. And Draco thought it was cute how Harry’s
unruly hair seemed to stick out in all directions.
Draco was brought out of his daydream by Snape entering the
room. Their very first assignment was
brewing a Peace Draught; a very complicated potion. Draco supposed what they said about fifth
year was true; studying for O.W.L’s was intense.
Although he was usually decent in Potions, today he was
finding it very hard to concentrate. His
eyes were on Harry more than they were on his own cauldron. No matter how hard he tried he couldn’t stop
himself from staring across the room.
Toward the end of the lesson when he was supposed to have a silver wisp
of smoke coming from his potion he produced magenta cloud instead.
Professor Snape went straight to Harry though. Harry’s potion had a little gray smoke coming
from it which meant his was pretty close.
Snape berated him for it anyway.
This time however, instead of giving Harry a zero like he usually did,
Snape told Harry to pour a sample into a flask and put it on his desk along
with everyone else. Most of the other
students didn’t notice the change.
Snape did however notice the change in Draco’s behavior. His dark gaze bored into the young blonde as
Draco put his flask on the desk. Snape’s
attention was diverted for a moment when Goyle’s flask shattered and his robes
caught on fire. Draco tried to sneak
away, but it seemed he wasn’t going to have any such luck.
“Mr. Malfoy, my office,” came Snape’s deep voice.
Draco groaned and remained behind. Harry gave him a curious look before heading
off to his next class.
Draco followed Snape into his tiny office and took a
seat. “Professor?” he asked as Snape
seated himself behind his desk.
Snape was quiet for a moment. “Like father like son,” he mumbled.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Draco asked defensively.
“It means you’re heading down a slippery slope,” Snape
answered. “Don’t think I didn’t notice
where your attention was the entire class period.”
“So?” Draco asked.
“We buried the hatchet and became friends over the last year. You know that.”
“I do,” Snape nodded.
“But you couldn’t concentrate on today’s assignment. That isn’t like you.”
“A lot has been happening…” Draco argued, becoming
defensive. “I’m sorry, it won’t happen
again.”
Snape shifted a little in his seat. “Draco, I’m merely concerned about you. I don’t want you to make the same mistake
your father did.”
“Mistake?” Draco repeated, hardly believing his own
ears.
Snape nodded. “As I
said, like father like son. You were
only a baby, but your father was hurt very badly and…”
“Shut up!” Draco growled.
Snape sat up and his eyes widened. He was too shocked to say or do
anything. If it had been anyone but
Draco Snape probably would have killed them.
“Excuse me?” Snape raised an eyebrow when he finally found his voice.
“Just shut up,” Draco repeated. “My father was hurt because the Dark Lord
killed James. The only fault James had
in it was that he stood up and fought, which is one of the reasons Father loves
him by the way. If you haven’t noticed
Father is happy now that he has James back.
And all of your like father like son bullshit is really
starting to get on my nerves. I may be a
lot like my father, but Harry takes after his mother mostly. You’d know that if your head wasn’t up your
arse.”
Snape was rendered speechless yet again. No one had talked to him like that in a very
long time. He stared at Draco in
shock. Draco sat with his arms crossed
never looking away. “Is that all
Professor?” he asked coldly.
Snape’s only answer was to stand up and walk away. Draco gathered his things and headed off to
his next class. He couldn’t believe
Snape had said those things to him. The
greasy git was probably just jealous that he was making friends and was
actually happy.
The nerve of his godfather trying to warn him against
Harry. Draco didn’t even have any
feelings for the Gryffindor; and even if he did, it was nobody’s business but
his own. He liked Harry as a friend and
that was all.

got me again, but I’m over it. It didn’t
help that I had to change meds. Then my
beta was on vacation, but she’s back now and got everything back to me
quickly. I’m having a little trouble
with where to take this, but I’ll figure it out.
