Chapter 26
Beta'd by Tenchi (love you, woman!)
A.N.- From here on out, all the chapters will be written by me and will be new material. I would, however, like to warn everyone once again that I'm not Aya and I can't write in her style nor can I produce the length of chapters she did. Also, as this was her baby and she knows it far better than I ever will, I might forget something that happened in either the first or this one. If I do, or contradict something, please let me know as it's not intentional. Beyond that, I do have the notes she left on the last chapter she posted on ff.net. Some of these will be used and some won't as I wiggle around and try to make this story, from here on out, 'my own'. It'll also take me a few chapters to 'get a feel' for what I need to do as picking up from someone else isn't like creating something of your own. Though this may disappoint some of you, for that I'm sorry, but it'll be a fun ride! So, hang on to your shorts, some twists are coming!

P.S. Error with something repaired 2/2/12
Flipping through the notes he had taken on the Death Eaters and other prisoners being held in the 'medical ward' in the Abbey, Harry chewed thoughtfully on his bottom lip as he made his way to the conference room where he knew Tom was. Tom wanted to go over the conditions of those there as well as suggestions from the healers before Snape showed up for a meeting he had scheduled in an hour or so.
Walking in, he smiled seeing Tom sitting there, in his serpentine transformation, working on something or other, his quill scratching on the parchment in front of him. With all he had to do, Tom was busy most times he was in here so Harry sat down in the chair by him and went to sorting through the notes he had taken to add to them if need be before he launched in to explain what he was sure Tom would want to know about.
“Give me a minute, Harry, and I'll be with you. I just need to finish this up,” Tom told him, not looking up from whatever he was working on.
“That's fine,” Harry replied with a small smile, shuffling through the notes before him, making sure they were in an order that he could deal with and find things quickly if needed.
After several more minutes of working intently on the parchment, Tom set his quill aside then leaned back, rubbing his eyes. Stretching slightly, he then leaned back in his chair, one hand caressing the arm of it almost absentmindedly. Looking at Harry, his lip-less mouth turned up slightly in a smile then asked, “Anything new with the ones we rescued?”
Shaking his head, Harry replied, “They are all still in a healing coma right now. Nor have the healers told me when they might be out. Each one is going to vary. But I took notes on their estimates.” He handed that part of things over to Tom then continued on, “The others, the ones we rescued, I've taken more notes on them and what they did as well as other things I thought were important.” Handing those notes over as well, he then leaned back in his chair and waited to see what else Tom wanted.
Nodding absently to Harry, Tom perused the notes he had taken, picking up a quill and adding things here and there that he felt was needed or wanted checked on when it came to things. There wasn't much, but he did want them done before he marked them. Leaning back again, he said, “It's my plan that, early next week, we'll mark them so they'll be able to start training. I'm going to have to see who I can find to take on this group since Thorfinn is at Hogwarts. Their skills, more than likely, are rusty after their stay in Azkaban and it'll have to go a little slower than with the others because of their poor condition.” Rubbing his chin with long, pale fingers, he tried to think who he could get to do that. With them staying at the Abbey, their training could be done every day until they were up to a level he wanted them.
Brow creased while he thought, Harry tried to come up with someone that he thought would work for that as well as who might be available each day without conflicting with work or other duties. The only name that came to mind was Barty. That, to him, didn't sound like a bad idea. Though he wasn't an expert at dueling like Thor was, he was damn good, being in the expert group, and could teach. “How about Barty? He's here all the time.”
Glancing at Harry, Tom nodded slowly, thinking. “That's not a bad idea, actually. He's around all the time and can easily handle something like this. After teaching last year, I don't think this group will be a problem,” He grinned.
Grinning back, Harry shook his head, “No, I don't think so considering how bad teaching us must have been because of the other incompetent professors in the past.” Shifting around, he asked, “What all do we have to do today?”
Pinching the bridge of his nose, Tom sighed then said, “Too much. However, the things that'll take the longest are the meetings with Lucius and Severus. You will, of course, be here for those.”
Nodding, Harry said nothing for a few minutes. With Lucius, he knew what that was about. Just more intel from the ministry and what was going on there as well as putting in place things Voldemort wanted. It was also going to be a rundown of what all Fudge was doing and legislation that was up for consideration. That was always something Tom wanted to be on top of. Meetings with Snape were always interesting. Something, somewhere had happened and it was hilarious to watch the Potions Master look at them anymore. Though that calculating look was always there no matter what, there was also a new one, something like he was watching the two of them intently for a sign of some kind. It was like he knew something and was waiting for confirmation.
Shifting in his seat to get comfortable and closer to Tom, Harry asked, “What are you feeding to Snape now? Or is it just more information on Dumbledore and the ring?”
“Of course, I want to know anything about the ring. I want to ensure that he says something to you if the old coot takes it off or looks as though he's going to destroy it. But, along with that, I want him to pass along the information that you're officially my consort.” Tom smirked wickedly.
Unable to help himself, Harry grinned. Then he asked, “What'll that do? Is there a reason for it?”
“More confusion on his end for the most part, nothing more. Since he caught us that day, I'm sure he suspects that 'Evan' is more to me than just a fling since Severus has made sure he knows you stay here and participate, in a big way, in some things. I just want to see if I can get him sidetracked a little to buy time for the curse to do its work.”
Nodding, Harry thought that part over. Up until this point, he hadn't thought much about the fact that Dumbledore had, probably, less than a year to live by now. “About the curse...” he trailed off, brow puckered as he thought.
“What about it?” Tom asked, looking at him.
Not looking at Tom, Harry asked, slowly, “How is this going to affect things? Obviously, with him gone, it'll be easier, I know. But, the curse... won't he be more desperate to do things? I figured that him giving me this so-called information on how to defeat you plays into that but...”
Nodding, Tom replied, “Honestly, I've not given it much thought, planning to worry about that more as it progresses. But, you're right, he probably is desperate. Desperate men do desperate things.” Stopping, he looked down at the desk, drumming his fingers on the arm of his chair. “This is something we need to plan for. We need to figure out what he's going to do or press for. Already, we know that he's aware of the Horcruxes and has been working on finding them. However, they are safe as of now with the exception of the ring. Beyond that, we need to know his plans as to what he intended to do after he found them. Those would involve you, of course. I don't think that this whole 'defeat with love' thing was his entire plan. There has to be more to it than that.”
Sneering and rolling his eyes at what the headmaster had told him the last time they had one of their 'lessons', Harry shook his head. “No, it can't be that. We know he intends to stick us together to battle it out and to sacrifice me in doing it. But, beyond that, there has to be more.”
“You're right, there has to be,” Tom nodded. “That we do need to figure out. Along with that, with his death, there will be no Light Lord. I'm sure, with what I know of him, that he's going to try to manipulate that part to his own ends as well, so his agenda continues on. Though it's against the rules, so to speak, we both know that he's not above doing something like that.”
Nodding, Harry sighed, “You know he will.”
Fingers drumming faster, Tom stared off, thinking intently. Finally, he said, “I think, for now, we're just going to watch and see what he does. I need to know what he plans with some things. Especially when it come to the ring. I know he's trying to find a way to destroy it, but it doesn't make much sense. He's aware how you managed to take care of the diary, though it wasn't intentional. If he wanted the ring gone he would probably go about it that way. After all, there is a basilisk down in the Chamber. All he would need is a fang from it. Though it's dead, it would still work. No, I have a feeling he wants that ring for something else. With what it is, he has to have a plan for it.”
Glancing back over at Tom, he could see his pale forehead creased as he thought. Harry shifted around again then asked, “But what could he want it for? It's, as far as he knows, nothing more than a family heirloom. Why not just destroy it and be done with it? It doesn’t make much sense. Unless he's figured out what it is and is planning to do something more with it.”
Nodding, Tom replied, “You're right. As smart as that old man is, he would have done so by now just to ensure it was gone. He's holding onto it for some reason or another.” Shifting around and looking at Harry, he shook his head. “I wanted it for obvious reasons. But if he's hanging onto it...” Trailing off, his eyes took on a faraway look.
“Maybe, if you can pull up a memory of just what it looks like, we can look into it? They might have more of an idea of what it might be related to other than being just the Resurrection Stone from legends or one of the Hallows. It might related to something he has plans for.” Harry offered up.
“That, Harry, might be a good idea. With some of my people in the Department of Mysteries, I can have them research into it. As they are all trained to hold their secret's close, I'm confident that they can research without giving away a reason why.” Nodding to himself, he made a note of who to have visit the Abbey in the next few days to put them on the task. Once that was done, he leaned back again, resuming thinking. “But that doesn't solve all the problems we have on that end. About the curse... as I said, I was content to let it play out to the end but, with some of what you've mentioned, I'm not sure that's wise. I think, before he can manipulate things any further, he needs to die.” Looking at the young man he considered his, he said, a grin forming on his lip-less mouth, “And I fully plan for you to do the honors so that he knows his manipulations didn't work, as well as the fact that the Light couldn't fully win.”
At that, Harry grinned, a gleam in his green eyes, but said nothing.
“I want his last memories on this earth to be of you ending his life so he moves on knowing he lost. However, right now, we need to take this one step at a time and figure out just what he's up to before we can plan for that. I don't believe, though, that he's going to make it to the end of the school year.”
Grin widening, Harry nodded at that.
Reaching over, Tom ran his fingers through the boy's hair gently then, after giving him a warm look, moved on to discussing other things.
Severus was troubled as he Apparated to the Abbey for the first time. It wasn't so much that there was a change to the headquarters. He understood the reason behind it. It would have been foolhardy to remain somewhere that Dumbledore knew about. No, other things were troubling him, such as what the headmaster had told him he had seen between Evan and the Dark Lord. That had been playing on his mind since he had the conversation with the old man.
Standing in the entry way to the new headquarters, Snape looked around, nodding at what he saw. It was obvious this was an old manor house from one of the pureblood families. It would, most assuredly, make a good place for its purpose.
Casting a tempus, he frowned to see that he was about 40 minutes early. In the old headquarters, he was certain where to go to sit and await his summons but here he wasn't sure. That left him at somewhat of a loss as to what to do. It wouldn't do to disturb the Dark Lord early since he knew the man usually had meetings all day but he wasn't certain where else he was able to go. He was relieved when he saw Lucius headed his way. Since the blonde had been here since the move, he was certain to know where he could wait.
Seeing the Potions Master, Lucius strode towards him then greeted him as he always did. With all that had gone on lately, the aristocratic blonde was still reeling from some of it, especially the part about Harris being their Lord's consort. As he didn't really have anyone to discuss such things with, Severus, as an old friend, was just the person to do that with. Beckoning him to follow, Lucius found one of the empty rooms where they were allowed to go and entered with Snape following.
After seating himself on a comfortable chair, he waited for Severus to do the same then said, “Our Lord is in another meeting so I imagine you'll have to wait.”
Nodding, Severus said nothing, brow furrowed slightly. With Lucius not as tied up as he was with things, he was sure the man would have more information on the Dark Lord's relationship with Evan but wasn't sure how to go about asking him for it.
Settling in, the aristocratic blonde tried to decide how to jump in. He and Severus had been friends long enough that they could talk freely with each other without fear of it being passed along but he wasn't sure if he knew how to articulate how troubled he was by the relationship between the Dark Lord and Evan Harris. Giving a minute sigh, he decided to just launch in. “Severus, I'm troubled.”
Looking at Lucius, the man in black just nodded, waiting for him to continue so that he could assess whatever it was that was bothering his old friend.
“How much do you know about Evan Harris?” Lucius finally asked.
“Nothing much. No more than anyone else really. Our Lord hasn't said anything about him other than what we've all heard. I do know that there is... some kind of relationship going on,” Severus said slowly, not sure if he should divulge what Dumbledore said or not.
Lifting his eyes, Lucius looked at him then snorted softly before saying, “That much was made evident on Samhain.”
Eyebrow lifting, Severus asked, “What happened?”
“I forgot you weren't here,” Lucius admitted then explained about the announcing of the elevation in status to consort as well as the kiss and dancing all witnessed.
Listening to what Lucius had to say, Snape was even more troubled when he melded that with what the old coot had told them of their encounter over the summer. Though troubled, he wasn't at all shocked since this Evan was still around and obviously close to Voldemort, very much so if what Dumbledore told him was true.
When he finished, Lucius shook his head then said, “This has been quite a... shock to comprehend. Though our Lord is very powerful, something that would be attractive to many, his physical appearance isn't something that one would find, how should I say it, palatable. I just don't understand.” Glancing at Severus, he didn't see the stunned look he expected but something more akin to troubled by what he imparted. “Severus?” He asked, softly, wanting an explanation.
Clearing his throat, Severus said, “Though, like you, I don't understand the attraction but it appears that they are, indeed, serious about each other.” Quickly, he told Lucius about Dumbledore's encounter with them over the summer.
Leaning back in his chair, Lucius looked at Severus intently then asked, “He said that our Lord looked normal? Not like his usual appearance?” When he saw Severus nod, Lucius commented, “I don't think even the most powerful glamour could change what he looks like. They aren't intended to completely alter your looks, just parts here and there. As...noticeable as our Lord is, he wouldn't risk going out in his normal appearance. It would cause a panic if he did. Nor, if Dumbledore said it was how he looked when he was younger, could it be Polyjuice.” Stopping, he thought it over, not saying anything.
“True,” Severus nodded. “However, it does prove that the relationship is long standing. I also don't think it's wise to poke into it too much. All that would do would be to anger the Dark Lord. It's obvious this Harris, whoever he is, is someone of great power. Look at the duel they had. Very few of us could hold our own against our Lord in something like that but he managed.”
Nodding at that piece of wisdom, Lucius said nothing. Voldemort was already less than pleased with him over the destruction of the diary so it wouldn't do to add more displeasure on top of it. That and his self preservation skills were kicking in, telling him that it wasn't wise to investigate too much. “You're right,” he conceded. “I assumed that, in time, we'll know what is truly going on. For now, it's best not to ask too many questions.”
Checking the time once more, Severus realized that he had to get to the meeting so, after saying his farewells to his old friend, strode towards the appointed place.
Finding the conference room quickly, Severus stepped inside only to come to a dead halt, mouth all but hanging open at what he encountered. Sitting at the table there were both Voldemort and Evans, sharing a very passionate and heated kiss with his Lord's fingers entwined in the younger wizards hair. Though it looked as though Voldemort was holding Evan's in place, the heat from the kiss made it clear that it was mutual. Shutting his eyes and rubbing them, he tried to think what to do. Quickly, he decided that leaving was best for all involved. He was certain his Lord knew he was there but would wait outside for a summons rather than intrude. Thoughts a whirl over the images that seemed seared in his brain, he turned to walk out when Voldemort's voice stopped him.
“Severusss,” Voldemort said softly, straightening up. “Take a seat. We have much to cover so you can get back without being missssed.”
Turning around and bowing to the Dark Lord, Severus made sure his normal mask was in place, though his thoughts were all over then seated himself in front of the two, waiting.
Though amused by Snape's obvious discomfort over what he had seen, Voldemort let no reaction show. Glancing over at Harry, he wanted to ensure that the boy didn't either. As would be expected, there was a neutral look in place but those eyes of his showed a definite mirth in them. It was obvious that Harry found Severus' discomfort amusing. That was to be expected so he wasn't going to reprimand him about it so long as he didn't let it show on his face.
Focusing on the Potions Master, he said, “Asss I'm sure you've heard, Severussss, Evan is now my consort and I expect you to treat him as sssuch.”
Though stunned at hearing the confirmation of it, Severus managed to keep his face neutral then nod, “Of course, my Lord.”
Amused by the warring look in Snape's eyes, one that showed stunned incredulity while trying to remain passive, Voldemort gave an internal chuckle but pressed on. “I would also like you to passs along that information to Dumbledore. Asss almost all the Death Eaters know by now, it would look suspicioussss if you weren't the one he heard the information from. Understood?”
Feeling more on firm ground with this and focusing, Severus nodded, “Of course, my Lord. I'll tell him tonight.”
“Very good, Severusss,” Voldemort nodded. Settling back, he pressed on, “About the ring... I want to, once more, impressss upon you to alert Harry Potter if the old man takes it off or is looking as though he is about to destroy it.”
Though sneering at Potter's name, Severus nodded, “I will, my Lord.”
“Now, Severusss, what have you learned from him since we last spoke?”
Organizing his thoughts, Severus quickly gave a rundown of what he had learned since the last time he had spoken to Voldemort. Knowing his Lord tended to get irritated if things were drawn out, he quickly ran through all he had learned, delivering it in the clear and concise manner that he favored.
Nodding as he listened, Voldemort then went over everything, point by point, to make sure he understood before giving instructions on what to find out or learn more about for the rest of the meeting.
Walking up to the castle after Apparating back from the meeting, Severus couldn't help but shudder as he recalled the kiss he had walked in on. Just the thought of being in any kind of romantic situation with someone that looked like Voldemort was enough to make him shudder. Let alone what it must be like to kiss such a creature. He was certain that image was burned in his brain forever and he would never be rid of it. However, there was a curiosity about it as well.
One part of that was him wondering what Evan's saw in the Dark Lord. Yes, there was power, a great deal of it, but that was balanced out by the fact with such a thing came great danger. Every being in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement would be gunning for Evans once they learned of his status. There would also be others, such as the Order, that wouldn't be above trying to kidnap him in order to get information. Though it appeared the young man was cautious, there were always dangers.
On the other hand, if the Dark Lord could transform into his former self and that's what Evans was attracted to, there was some understanding there. If what Dumbledore said was right and he was handsome before his looks changed, he could appreciate what Evans felt to a degree.
However, there was something about Evans that he couldn't put his finger on. The mannerism, the way he said certain things, some gestures... there was something familiar about them. They reminded him of someone but he couldn't figure out who it was. It was there, almost on the tip of his tongue, but he couldn't get it out. It would, he was sure, going to drive him slightly mad until he managed.
Seeing the castle loom closer, Severus picked up speed, wanting to ensure that he was there before he was missed. If that happened, there would be questions he didn't want to answer. He also needed to speak to Dumbledore about the information the Dark Lord wanted him to pass along. That was going to have to be done as well. It was a certainty that the old man knew he had gone so that probably wouldn't be an issue, just a matter of waiting for a summons from him.
Once beyond the gates, Severus headed towards his quarters. There was a bottle of firewhiskey with his name on it and he was going to partake though he usually didn't during the day. But he felt that he was justified.
