Chapter 27
Listening in to the conversation around the table, Harry looked up when Molly said his name.
“Is Lucius going to try to come over for a cup of eggnog?” She asked, smiling at the young man.“Yeah, he is,” Harry nodded. “In fact, I think he's planning on it because we have a little surprise for everyone.” Seeing some concerned looks, he chuckled, “Not that kind. It's something else.” Glancing at Dudley and Charlie, he grinned a little then said, “Even those two don't know about this.”Dudley said, grinning. “I knew you two were plotting something, somewhere, but you’ve been keeping it such a secret that we can't figure out what it is.”“You'll like it, I promise,” Harry told him, snickering.“Did you really get them both off parole?” Ron asked quietly as he looked at his old friend. “Don't you think that's a little dangerous? As long as someone is watching over them, they aren't going to pull a fast one, Harry.”“I did and they aren't,” Harry told him with a firm nod. “Dr. Netherwood is still going to see them for a while, so he'll know something is off if there is anything. Lucius still stays with me, so he's not going to do anything. Draco is busy with being a Healer, has a wife and a kid. They aren't a danger, Ron.” Hearing his old friend start to dispute that, he added, softly, “Just trust my judgment. I know what I'm doing here.”Knowing Ron wasn't going to give up, Charlie changed topics and asked, grinning, “Did you really get Lucius that Dr. Who jacket and scarf?”“I did,” Harry laughed. “He likes Tom Baker, so I couldn't resist. I thought about giving him another pair of those awful pajamas too, but he'd huff at me again.”Describing those to everyone, Dudley laughed, “They are horrid, trust me. The look on Lucius and Draco's faces when they opened those was a riot!”“They were,” Harry snickered, nodding. “They were completely horrified by them. It was perfect.”Smiling at that, trying to envision what they were talking about, Molly shook her head, “That had to be funny to see.”“It was, trust me,” Charlie laughed. “As was the look on Andromeda's face when she thought Harry bought Teddy a broom though he promised not to.”“Oh, I plan to,” Harry grinned. “You'll understand later, I promise.”
Hermione was about to press for more information when Molly stood to go answer a knock at the door. Grinning when he heard Lucius' voice, he looked over his shoulder and waited for the man to come in. When he saw Lucius enter the room, he laughed, “You like the coat and scarf, I take it?”Looking smug as he pulled his gloves off, Lucius then smoothed the coat down and ensured the scarf was wrapped right before saying, as he walked over to take a seat by Harry, “I do! It's wonderful. Draco and I were both trepidatious that you had given me more of those hideous pajamas.”Snickering at that, crossing his arms over his chest, Harry shook his head, “I thought about it, but figured one pair you wouldn't be caught dead in was enough.”Eying Lucius as he sat by Harry and took a cup of eggnog, Dudley grinned, “I want that coat and scarf. It looks great on you, Lucius.”Lucius peered down then nodded before saying, “I was wary about wearing it, however it's not only comfortable but looks good as well. I'm most pleased with it.” Taking a sip of his eggnog and a biscuit that was offered him, Lucius looked at Harry, who was grinning at him. “Have you told them?”“Nope, was waiting for you,” Harry said, grinning bigger.“Start talking,” Dudley told him firmly, crossing his arms over his chest. “We want to know!”“We are curious, Harry,” Molly said as she took a seat after checking on the food.“Alright, most of you lot don't know I bought the stadium where the Quidditch World Cup was held when it was in Britain. The only reason I did was I wanted somewhere to fly. It wasn't in the greatest of shape when I did, though we've worked on it since then. Lucius, Dudley, Charlie and me invented a game we play there now. It's a little like Quidditch, but you're not in danger of getting hit with anything, more like you smack the Quaffles into the hoops while the Bludgers get in the way. There also isn't a snitch. Dudley wanted to play Quidditch after hearing all of us talk about it so much, so we came up with this so he could. We do it with two people on a broom. One flies and the other smacks the Quaffle with the Beaters bat. Not long ago, Draco and Astoria began to join us. Astoria isn't one that likes being on a broom either, but even she enjoyed it as we make sure there is a sticking charm on the broom she rides. Talking it over while we were working on fixing part of the stadium one night, Lucius and I decided to see if we can't make a business out of it. What we're doing is hiring people to get the stadium up to specs, then we're going to open it as a business where you can come play that game. You can either bring your own team in, with as many people as you like on it, or we'll pair you up with someone. The bottom levels are going to be like a restaurant or somewhere to sit and watch everyone play. About ten foot up from the playing field, there is going to be a barrier put in place with lower hoops for the younger ones to play, like the ones that aren't in school yet to get some practice. We thought, since all of us have so much fun doing it, others would as well.”“We also thought that we could rent it out for private parties. If we have facilities on the lower levels, that would work wonderfully for that part. During the summer months, we can give Quidditch lessons for those going to Hogwarts for their second year to give them an assist with their skills so they have a better chance of getting on a house team. Along with that, we thought that we could rent it out to the small Quidditch teams that aren't in the big leagues for a place to practice. Many of those don't have a steady training facility and have to borrow or rent one elsewhere. This would give them a place they could book continuously. There is also the idea that for people like Charlie, who like to fly and want to share the experience with their Muggle significant other, that they could introduce them this way as it's safe and they are in no danger of falling off the broom.” Harry explained then stopped to look around. When Harry stopped, Charlie glanced around and saw skeptical looks from his family. Looking back at Lucius and Harry, he said, “I think this is a bloody brilliant idea!” Glancing around the table again, he said, “You lot don't realize how much fun that game is. Lucius and Astoria, neither one, are fond of flying, but they like it as well. In fact, we all have a great time playing. Harry and Lucius have rigged up some kind of sound system for it so that we have music and it creates a wonderfully energetic atmosphere while we play. We spend hours doing this as it's great.” Looking at the two, he gave a firm nod and said, “I think this is a damned good idea!”“I do too,” Dudley told them enthusiastically. “It's a great game.”Taking that in and thinking it over, Arthur asked, curious, “How are you going to work the ownership. No offense, but you need to go into any business venture with a plan for that.”“We do,” Harry said with a firm nod. “My solicitor has drawn up a rock solid contract for us and we've both signed. I own 75% of it and Lucius the other 25%. Lucius' name is going to be hidden and he's going to be what's called a silent partner so we don't catch hell over him being around. I'm going to handle all the chunk with the game, stadium and all that. He's taking on the financial end as he knows that more than I ever would. We're going to hire out parts of it, of course, but we'll be doing most of it. I'm going to be the 'face' of it, with no one knowing Lucius is involved. We thought that best.”“There are, of course, gremlins to work out,” Lucius added, looking around. “There always are in such ventures, but we have the basics all laid out and ready to go. After the first of the year, we have a crew coming in to work on the stadium to ensure it's completely safe then customize what we need for it, build what is necessary and go from there. It's our hope that it'll be open in time for Easter break at Hogwarts. Harry is going to take on being the face and do the publicity for it.”“We thought, maybe, if you lot could find a babysitter on New Year's Eve that we could go to the stadium for a while so you could either play or watch. That way you have a better idea what we're talking about,” Harry said, looking around.“I think—yes, we can do that,” Arthur said with a nod. “Molly and I won't be getting on brooms, I assure you of that, but we can watch so we get a feel for what you're talking about.” Looking around, he said, “I say we make an evening of it, all of us. It's far better than going out and being caught in the masses.”“We can do that if we find someone to babysit,” Hermione said, looking at Ron who appeared skeptical.“We'll work that part out,” Bill said, glancing at Fleur who was nodding as well. “Maybe have them all over here with a couple of people. That should work fine.”“The stadium is safe, I promise. We'll put something on the top box to keep it warm and set up some refreshments for those playing and those just wanting to watch. It'll be fun, I promise.”“Yeah, you get to watch Lucius have panic attacks when Harry scares him with some stunt. Or Astoria threaten to beat Draco to death with her bat when he does the same,” Dudley laughed.Giving a long suffering sigh, Lucius shook his head, “Harry does seem to make it his mission to frighten the life out of me at least once a game.”“Yeah, cause I've gotten better at ducking the bat when you swing it,” Harry grinned at him.Chuckling at that exchange, glancing at his wife, who was smiling slightly, he asked, “Molly? What do you think?”“I think—yes, New Year's Eve is a good idea,” she nodded. “We'll be there. And, though I don't know much about such ventures myself, it does sound like something that could work. We'll wait to see more on that once we observe.”
“I thought, and Lucius agreed, that this is something we could make work. It's fun, it's something I like doing as I get to fly without being competitive, it's something the whole family can do that everyone would enjoy and could also provide for a need that's there when it comes to other areas. As I own the stadium already, something that didn't cost me much, honestly, it's not going to take much money at all for starting it up. Most of the expensive equipment is already there, such as the field, seats, hoops and that. We need to make sure they're safe, of course, but that's not an expense we have to worry about.” Stopping, he looked around. Shrugging, he added, “Even if the game itself isn't a hit, the fact that the stadium is safe will make me money from renting it out to teams to use for practice.”Taking that in, Arthur gave a slow nod, “Very good point, Harry. The pro teams alone will probably make it worthwhile if you can get them to sign a contract to use it. There are plenty around that need practice space. With this being a professional stadium to start with, they'll have everything they need, including the locker rooms.”“I didn't think of that,” Bill said, slipping an arm around his wife, who leaned into him. “That alone is a great idea and fills a need that's there. Everything else—if it works out, will make it great.”“We think so,” Harry nodded with a grin.“Does this mean Charlie and I get lifetime free passes since we helped start you on this road?” Dudley grinned, nudging Harry.Chuckling, Harry nodded, “Yeah, you do. If it wasn't for you two, we wouldn't have come up with the idea.”“Then we have to make it work somehow!” Charlie laughed, slipping an arm around Dudley.
Sitting in the kitchen, alone with Molly as she cleaned up after the meal, Harry was sipping at some butterbeer, watching her bustle around.
Once she was sure everything was in the sink and washing properly, Molly poured herself some tea then sat at the table across from Harry. Smiling at the young man after she took a sip, she sat the cup down then said, quietly, “You seem very happy, Harry. I mean, it's obvious there are still some problems on your end, but you look so much better and seem happier than we've seen you in a long time.”Smiling a little, Harry nodded then told her softly, “I am. I admit that.”“Is it just that you're feeling better or is it Lucius?” She asked, looking at him.Twirling his butterbeer bottle around on the table, looking down, Harry thought it over then said, honestly, “Both I think. I mean, I'm feeling better than I have in a couple of years, I admit that. There are still problems, of course, but I'm working with them. Lucius, though—he makes me feel wonderful.” Shaking his head, he admitted, “I don't know how to describe it better than that. We're friends, and have been for a while now, but it's more. I like being around him and having him around. I feel safe with him there, and it's not just in the way that he's someone to protect me.” Giving a snort and grin, he said, “And no one, anywhere, has to tell me how ironic that sounds, what with the past and all.”“It is, I admit that,” Molly said with a smile, reaching out to pat one of his hands. Taking the hand she patted, she admitted, “We had our doubts about him, as I'm sure you can guess, but most of us are over them.” Lowering her voice, she asked, “Where do you think the relationship is going? Or don't you know?”“That I don't,” Harry admitted, looking at her, shaking his head. “Neither of us, when we talked about it before deciding to give it a try, wanted something just casual or, you know, sexual. Where it's going beyond what it is I don't know. I do know we like spending time together and do all kinds of things. Most nights we just sit around and talk about lots of topics. I find listening to what he knows on some subjects fascinating. He said the same about me. We don't talk about the war, other than once in a while. It's—I don't know how to explain it to you. I'm comfortable with him in a way I've never been with anyone else.”“That's good, Harry. It's a very good sign in a relationship,” she told him softly. Lowering her voice even more, she asked, “Do you love him?”Thinking that over, Harry's brow furrowed. That wasn't an easy question to answer as he wasn't sure he had ever been in love before with someone in this way. Ginny—he had thought he was, but was now sure that was something else. There hadn't been anyone else since then he wanted a relationship with. Sighing as he pondered that question, he thought over what he did feel for Lucius then said, quietly, “I think I do. I don't know how to explain what I feel for him, but I think that's what this is. He makes me feel—wonderful, in the best of ways.” Shaking his head, he sighed, “I just don't know how to get this across to you when it comes to what I feel for him.”Understanding that, Molly nodded and gave his hand a squeeze. “Good. We have our prejudice when it comes to Lucius, even now, as I'm sure you understand. I can safely say, though, what we see with you two we like. Charlie has nothing but good to say about him and what he sees of you two. That goes a long way. The same with what we saw of him when he first started staying with you.” Stopping, she looked down and thought over what she wanted to say, trying to think how to word it. After a couple of moments she said, “The way he looks at you, Harry—I think he feels the same way.”Smiling at that, Harry told her, “I think so as well. He's not the kind to talk about that, of course, and neither am I, but the feeling is there in so many ways, more than just looks. If there was something off about it, I think I would know by now.”“I think so as well,” she said, smiling. Lowering her voice, keeping it soothing, she said, “I want no offense taken at this and I don't want to embarrass you, alright?” Seeing him nod, she asked, “It's not just about sex, is it? I mean, some can mistake lust and passion for love.”Grinning a little, Harry gave her hand a squeeze then said, softly, “I can promise it isn't because we haven't.”Relieved about that, she nodded, smiling at him. “I'm sure you know why I said something.”“I do,” Harry told her with a firm nod and a smile.
“We—I'm just trying to look out for you, Harry, that's all. That's why I wanted to talk to you alone so you didn't get bombarded with so much when everyone else was around. You know, if you want someone to talk to, you can always come to me, about anything. I don't care what it is. I'm alone most of the day anymore. Just come over and we'll talk about whatever you need to.”“Thanks, I appreciate it,” Harry told her with a smile.Giving his hand another squeeze, she let loose of it then asked, “You're going over to Malfoy Manor for supper? The same with Dudley?”“We are,” Harry told her, grinning a little. “Lucius said he thinks Dudley will be the first Muggle to ever be invited to step foot in the place. And that his father is probably rolling over in his grave even thinking about it.”“He probably is,” Molly laughed, sipping her tea. “Maybe, if things keep going well, Draco, Astoria and Scorpius can come over here for dinner sometime. We'll keep most of the kids away so as not to overwhelm the poor boy, but some he might like to play with, especially the younger ones.”“He might. It seemed that he liked playing with Teddy last night, a lot. I'll say something to Lucius about that. It's up to Draco of course,” Harry told her.
“Oh, of course,” she told him with a dismissive wave. “We'd like it as well. How is it going with Draco? Charlie says you two are getting along well.”“We are,” Harry nodded then walked her through the relationship, liking the easy talk that just seemed to flow.
