Chapter 27
As Harry leaned against him, reading over his shoulder, Sirius went through the letter from his Solicitor about the meeting with Lucius. While he read, he grinned. The letter had been delivered the day before, once the meeting was over, but he had refused to open it, or let Remus do so. As it would automatically timestamp the document, it would show he had opened and read it. He wanted to wait.
From what was said in it, Lucius caved, to everything. He knew his end, and what he wanted, of course, but this also listed what Rufus wanted out of the man as well. And Lucius agreed, to all of it. The spells were applied, so there was no backing out. Draco would get out of Azkaban, of course, but would be wearing a tracking band that not only kept tabs on what he did and where he went, but what he said. One more dance like he had done before and he was back in Azkaban until the war was over with no second chances. Perfect! When he finished, still grinning, he passed the letter to Remus before chuckling, “The posh prat gave me everything, as expected. As soon as I sign it and send it off, it'll go into full effect.”“Oh, this is good,” Harry chuckled, leaning against him. “Any idea when Draco will get out or what they'll do with Lucius?”“Not sure,” Sirius admitted, arm slipping around Harry. “I'll ask when I send it back. More so we know than anything else. I'm sure the fool will have to go into hiding now, probably with Ministry protection. Even his own properties won't be safe for him to stay in. Then Rufus will end up debriefing him of everything he knows. We all realize that will take time. And it's a sure-fire bet he'll be in hiding when they do so. Albus isn't the only one with contacts in the Ministry. As big of a catch as Lucius is, it'll slip out in some way.”“True,” Remus agreed, pushing the letter back to Sirius, smiling himself. “I'm also certain this will kick off worse than what's already going on.”“Won't bother us,” Sirius told him as he took the paper. Then, grabbing the quill, he signed the paper, chuckling as he did. There, done. He had helped cut the knees out from under plenty and knew it. Let everyone else deal with the fallout from here on out. They were safe right where they were. After quilling a quick note so they were filled in on just what was coming, like Draco's release, he put it in an envelope and pushed it back to Remus. “Get it off. Shouldn't take long to get there then they can deal accordingly. We'll get something back from him soon laying out everything.”“I will,” Remus said, still smiling then stood to go tend to the matter. The faster this went out, the quicker Rufus could start what he needed. It could only help everyone.“How fast will the funds be freed up, do you know?” Harry inquired, curious. The malicious part of him wanted it to take some time so they had to wait. Well, it was the same with Draco ending up freed. If Draco had to cool his heels for a time, it might drive the point home to knock off the stupid crap.“Oh, it'll take at least a week,” Sirius told him, grinning again. “He will have some freed up and probably transferred back quickly, more than what he has now. It'll make him happy. Others will take time because they are still sorting through what will revert back to the House of Black or remain frozen.” He explained. “None of this is as simple as it's right back there. The spells and goblins take time. I'm sure the goblins will drag their feet a little as well. They not only have to protect themselves, but there is a mass of paperwork to fill out on the nightmare. There are probably plenty of protection spells they need to put on the whole mess as well.”“Maybe it'll humble them a little. Well, and they'll knock off some of the crap,” Harry added after taking a sip of his juice.“Doubtful,” Sirius snorted. “Lucius isn't ever going to change. Ever. He'll just end up more circumspect about what he does with the mess. While he won't help the other side now, as he can't in any way, his views won't change.”“Well, I bet his ego took a pounding after all this and what was in the paper,” Harry said, trying not to grin.“Of that there is no doubt,” Sirius laughed, giving him a squeeze. “And it might not recover in some ways. He was finally forced to make the right choice instead of doing what he wanted, thinking no one could touch him. Once in a while karma needs to make a visit. This time I was karma. And it felt good being the one that slapped him with it.”“Oh, I bet,” Harry chuckled, shaking his head. After downing the last of his tea, Sirius sighed contentedly. This was good, all of it. And he felt better knowing his part of the mess was over other than some more papers coming in. As it helped the war in a way none of them were directly involved in the mess, he was happy with it.With a smile, he looked at Harry then said, “As soon as Remus gets back, let's go outside and work more with the spells. We'll not only be outside where it's nice, but it'll give us something to do.”“Sounds good,” Harry said, nodding. Thankfully, getting the words out was becoming easier as time went on. It felt good to once more be close to being back to normal for him. Besides, spending time with the two mucking around was great.“If you catch on quickly enough, we'll smack some balls around,” Sirius added. They hadn't mucked about on the broom since the bit with Harry started because it would end up worthless since Harry wouldn't be able to do whatever on his own without permission. Playing would not only be fun, but give him an idea how much more they had to go with this.“All right,” Harry smiled, looking forward to flying again though he was worried it wouldn't be as fun because of all he was dealing with. Hopefully, he could have some fun with it and not just end up frustrated.
Lucius was seated at the dining room table at Malfoy Manor after breakfast. Though there were a myriad of issues and tons of paperwork he needed to tend to, he wasn't in the mood to tend to it. At the moment, he couldn't bring himself to do anything. All he could focus on was waiting for the notice about Sirius signing the paperwork. Once the man did, then he would tend to plenty. Most of it would deal with moving them. Narcissa was already busy with the elves making damned certain everything they needed was packed, such as clothes, personal items, toiletries and the like. Those bits would go first. Anything else would come later. The plan was for them to be completely out of Malfoy Manor within twenty-four hours after the notice. They'd be moved before then, of course, but once the notice came, he would set all the wards to lock down within that timeframe. While they would be taking elves with them, it was best they not come back to the Manor, so they needed everything out, fast.
Eyes going shut, Lucius ran through the multitude of issues he needed to deal with. For now, they didn't know where they were going, though Rufus told them it was comfortable and as protected as he could manage. At this juncture, Lucius didn't really care as long as they were together, including Draco being with them. When Sirius signed the papers, it would trigger to Rufus, who would then go get his son out of that awful prison. Draco wouldn't come here, but would be waiting for them at their 'new home'. As long as he was out, it was fine. It was that part he was waiting for the most. While Draco would have to adhere to everything, being bound by the same spells they were and the monitoring band, he was at least free. He just hoped his son wouldn't pull something foolish. Rufus made it as clear as he could this was Draco's only chance. It. One more stunt and he was back in Azkaban with no hope of being let out until the war was over. From what was said, Rufus would go to Azkaban personally and make it clear. With a tired sigh, Lucius opened his eyes and looked around. He could hear Narcissa directing the elves on plenty, making sure they packed everything they could and were prepared. He—well, he didn't feel like doing anything but sitting here until it was time to take care of business. There were areas, like his study and records, only he could tend to, but it could wait.As he stared at the table, he tried to will Sirius to sign the bloody papers already. It had been over twelve hours and he was growing antsy. Oh, he was sure they'd end up signed, but the waiting for it to happen was causing issues, big ones. With all that went on, he sure didn't need going barmy waiting adding to the list. After Narcissa came in and inquired about some items she wanted to know whether to take or not, he finally straightened up. When he looked over at the stack of letters waiting, he shook his head. Maybe he should at least sort them out to see what was there. It would give him something to focus on instead of the waiting and apprehension over what could come of his decision. He knew what this meant, for all of them, and his gut curdled over what the Dark Lord might do when he found out. All he hoped was Rufus was true to his word in that where they were going was as safe and protected as he could manage. If it wasn't, the three of them would wish for death before the Dark Lord was done.Just as he was reaching for the first letter in the stack, an elf popped in with a new letter. Taking it, he looked it over then slumped, relieved. Sirius had signed the papers. Everything was now in motion and it was time to really start moving. They only had an hour, at the most, before they were escorted to their new dwelling, so he had much to do.He finally stood and summoned an elf. Yes, he needed to start, now. The study was first. All the records in there needed carefully packed and ready to go before he tended to anything else. After calling Narcissa to let her know it was almost time, he hurried off, looking forward to seeing his son. Draco out of prison would make this all worthwhile.
Draco was seated in the chair in his cell, staring out the window. Though he had a book open, face down on the table, he wasn't interested in reading. Thankfully, his parents had sent him some stuff to help and it made it better. It was still the idea he was here and there was no chance at getting out. The realization of his situation had finally hit the day before and he didn't know how to handle it. Honestly? He thought he was going mad over being confined. No punishment he had ever suffered over something had prepared him for this cell and how bad it was. It made him wonder how so many had lasted as long as they had without going mad.
While he listened to the sound of the sea crashing over the rocks outside, his brow furrowed. It sounded like there was some kind of commotion out in the hallway. A glance in that direction had his wondering what was going on. The more he listened, the more he could pick up on conversation and it sounded like it was coming in his direction. While he wanted to get up and look, knowing it wasn't time for what they called a meal, he didn't have the energy to do so. It would take too much effort to get up and see what was going on. He just didn't have the energy. As he sat there, he watched the door, wondering. Then he was startled when the guard's face appeared in the small barred opening at the top along with the rattle of keys. So far, meals were just shoved through the flap at the bottom. Then he stood when the door swung open, eyes wide. There was Rufus Scrimgeour with several Aurors behind him. Eyes darting all over, he wondered what was going on. Were they moving him? He didn't know what else it could be.Chin held high, making sure he was clutching his wand, Rufus said, “You're being released.”Thanking Merlin and his father, assuming Lucius had managed something, Draco didn't know what to do. However, he was appalled to find his eyes stinging with tears as the thought of getting out of this Merlin-forsaken cell!Eyes flinty, Rufus said, “There are conditions, Mr. Malfoy. And you are bound by the papers your father signed. One more foolish stunt and you are right back here with no hope of getting out until the war is over. Do you understand?”“I do,” Draco nodded, ready to agree to anything to get himself out of this cell. He didn't care what it was! However, he did want to know so he didn't do something stupid to land himself right back in this place. Any thoughts of Potter and revenge were now gone. All he wanted was out. With a nod, Rufus then began to walk the youngest Malfoy through what was required of him and what was coming. They would move Draco first and get him secured before he did the same with his parents. While he hadn't wanted to do this during the day, he had hoped for at night to where they might be able to hide it more, it was now imperative they start. The faster they were in the Tudor manor house they set up, the quicker he could get much needed information out of Lucius. So, they were taking the chance, but making damned sure the three were as protected as he could get them while they were moved.
When they stepped through the door of the nondescript Tudor manor they would be confined to, Lucius' expression was neutral. However, he was relieved. While there wasn't the opulence of Malfoy Manor, it certainly wasn’t a small hovel either. At least they would be comfortable. It was clean, of course, but the elves would ensure it was immaculate, like they were used to. It was something they could tend to quickly.
As he walked further in, he heard his son's voice. Head coming up, feeling Narcissa clutch his arm tightly, he gave a relieved sigh to see Draco standing there. Of course, Narcissa went to him, hugging him tightly. He then nodded. Rufus had kept his word. After coming up behind Lucius, Rufus gave him a nudge to keep him moving. They had plenty to cover then work towards getting the information he needed. “We need to give you instructions, fast. I don't want my people here any longer than I have to have them present, despite everything on this house.”“Understood,” Lucius said, moving forward, putting a hand on Draco's shoulder and guiding him along as well. As long as they were together, they would be fine.Once in one of the parlors and seated, Rufus began explaining the protections on the house then how he wanted to go about this. When he finished, he looked between the three. “You don't go out, period. We can't protect you when you're out. While we have monitoring charms on everything we can think of, I don't have the manpower to station someone here all the time. Even if I did, I wouldn't as it would draw attention. Your elves can set up whatever for delivery. If there is something you have to tend to, you'll have an escort and we'll set it up for after hours.”“I understand,” Lucius said with a nod, hand still on his son's shoulder.“The Manor—it's locked down? The same with other properties?” Rufus asked.“It will lock down sometime over night,” Lucius assured him. “This way the elves can get everything out and no one will know when we left. Once they lock down, there is no getting into them. Even the elves won't be able to gain entry. We just need to ensure everything is out, nothing more.”“Fine,” Rufus said gruffly. “Two hours after the Ministry closes, I'll be here with some people then we'll start going over what I need to know. While I know we won't be able to cover everything tonight, I want to start.”“Of course,” Lucius told him with an internal sigh. He was certain his father was rolling in his grave over what he had done, but it didn't matter. As long as his family was together, they would manage.“Right,” Rufus said, standing. “I'm going. People will keep watch for the rest of the day, then you're on your own. No going out. I'll be back later.” Then he added, “Remember, you're bound by the spells on the papers you signed. One slip up and you break the agreement.” Then, with a nod, he left. There was much to do before the end of business that day and he wanted to finish the work as fast as he could. Tonight would give them the advantage they were looking for and he wanted to get to it.As he watched Rufus go, Lucius felt himself relax. While there was much to come, his family was back together and they would survive this, just like they had everything else. With a smile, he gave Draco's shoulder a squeeze then said, “Let's find you a good meal then I'll cover all you need to know.” His son would understand this was his way of showing relief he was out of prison and happy they were together.“Of course, Father,” Draco told him with a smile. While this wasn't home, he was with his parents. It was a far sight better than where he had been. He also planned to make certain he didn't ever return to that awful prison.
Sirius pulled Harry closer and kissed him softly. All three of them were in the bathtub after mucking about in the yard for most of the afternoon. As they were tired and sweaty, it was a good way to not only relax, but clean up. Harry was straddling his lap with him holding the younger wizard while Remus was behind him. While they did need to clean up, he was also going to have Remus remove Harry's collar and cuffs to clean under them as well as the objects. It was best to go about it this way because he wasn't the one removing them and would be holding Harry at the same time. Since coming back, they hadn't done more than cleaning spells on them and they needed done. It would have just caused too much stress before now.
Lips locked on Harry's, holding him close, he motioned for Remus to get on with it, preparing for a bad reaction when it came about.Remus pressed tighter to Harry's back then kissed him on the shoulder. When he finished, he reached up and took the collar off then waited. Harry would need calmed down before he pressed on from there.Almost immediately when he felt the collar come off, Harry stiffened up then the panic washed over him. He knew, realistically, it was probably just to clean it, but he couldn't help it because of what it did. Starting to shake madly, he let out a soft panicked whine, unable to stop the anxiety that was building over it.“It's fine,” Sirius soothed, holding him close and stroking his back after breaking off the kiss. “Remus is just cleaning them. I'll hold you while he does. Nothing to worry about.”Though Harry nodded, he was now coated with a sheen of panicked sweat and was trembling. As he clung to Sirius, he shut his eyes and willed himself to calm down. He also repeated the mantra of it's fine over and over. Then he willed Remus to hurry. Once the collar was back on, he would feel better. The spells and what his dad had done all those years ago drove a feeling that the collar came off because Sirius was unhappy with him. It was unrealistic, he knew it, but he couldn't help what he was feeling. As he held Harry close, watching Remus work as fast as he could, Sirius kept reassuring Harry. “It's fine. Nothing's wrong. It'll be back on in a minute then we'll push on,” he soothed, feeling rather disturbed himself, like someone was messing with someone who 'belonged' to him. Taking deep breaths, he tried to remain calm, for both his sake and Harry's. It wouldn't do for him to get worked up as well. That sure as hell wouldn't calm Harry down. While he kept an eye on the two, Remus worked as fast as he could to clean not only Harry's neck, but the collar as well. He, too, was feeling what they were through the bond and didn't want to draw this out, thus the situation growing worse. When he finished, he fastened the collar back around Harry's neck with trembling hands. Leaning down, he kissed Harry on his sweaty shoulder then muttered, “All done. I'll do the cuffs now. Won't take but a moment.” While the cuffs could cause issues themselves, it wouldn't be nearly as bad at the collar because of the spells woven into them. He would do those one at time, though, to minimize the reaction.Sirius continued to hold Harry close, murmuring softly to him as he watched Remus, trembling himself by now. This needed done, for more than one reason of course, but it didn't make it any easier. It was one of the bigger steps they had to take. Now was perfect for it.Still clinging to Sirius, Harry whimpered softly, eyes tightly shut. His heart felt like it would explode it was hammering so hard. The tension was easing though because the cuffs were easier to deal with. He just wanted Remus to finish, nothing more, so he could relax again.By the time Remus finished with the cuffs, his hands were shaking madly and he was coated with sweat himself, but it was a relief when it was accomplished. When the second cuff was fastened back into place, he soothed, “All done.” Then he picked up the flannel in a hand that still shook madly and began to gently wash Harry's back, hoping to calm him down more.“Thank Merlin,” Sirius muttered, continuing to hold Harry closer, head resting against his godson's. The first time was done, though, something they needed. Each time would get easier as they grew accustomed to it until Harry could do it himself. “We're fine, Harry,” he soothed his still trembling godson, giving him a reassuring squeeze. “Nothing but cleaning up,” he added, knowing what the problem was as he was dealing with it on his end. “We'll finish and sit here for a while, making the water all bubbly so it feels good.”Though Harry nodded, feeling slightly better as everything was back in place, he wasn't ready to let go of Sirius yet. No, he needed time for the feelings to abate before he thought he could. However, he liked Remus washing his back and the idea of the bubbly water. It would make him feel better, that's for sure. Eyes shut, he focused on Sirius' heartbeat and the soothing feeling of being washed, waiting to calm down more. It would just take time, he reassured himself. Nothing but time.
