They knew she wasn’t lying. After all, you couldn’t put alcohol into a Poly Juice potion, but they had to play along with Dumbledore’s act until the real Rita Skeeter was saved ...

Tom struggled to maintain the bubble he was inside of, but it started to wiggle. His eyes widened and he tried to calm down and focus. For a moment the walls of the bubble became steady, but it soon started shivering again.
“Don’t force it.” Kathy said as she watched her apprentice.
“Imagine that there’s something you treasure in the bubble and water is filling up the room.” Tom and Kathy turned to see a dark red goblin in a black suit walking into the room.
The young wizard nodded and closed his eyes. After a moment the bubble became stable. “It’s working!` Tom exclaimed and he suddenly became dizzy as the bubble faded. “So close.”
Kathy chuckled, “That was perfect actually! You just ran out of steam.” She said excitedly and smiled at the goblin. “Are you Grizzlegore?”
“Yes, I am and I suggest we hurry because your Persephone is apparently running her healers ragged.” Grizzlegore commented, sounding more amused than anything else despite suggesting they hurry.
Tom nodded quickly as Kathy spelled his clothes dry and handed him his things in a keychain sized bag that hung off his phone, “Thank you, Kathy.” He said kindly as he put his dry phone back in his now dry pocket. Last thing you want to do is train with water spells with your phone or school bag on your person.
“No problem, Tom! Now I’ll text Brian to tell him you’re in your goblin’s hands so you should only worry about your troublemaking serpent.” Kathy said as her sweet little bowtruckle army came to her side and climbed on her to wave goodbye to Tom.
After waving goodbye Tom followed the goblin out of the pool area, “What’s going on with Persephone? Is she ok?” Tom asked rather concerned about his basilisk friend. She could be centuries old, but she can be so stubborn when it comes to her own health. He wasn’t supposed that she’s been in the sanctuary infirmary for far longer than necessary.
“In all honesty I’m not entirely sure. I was informed that something happened, but it didn’t sound like a bad thing. Of course, I couldn’t be told too much private information.” Grizzlegore admitted as they stopped in front of the floo. With a snap of his claws a clump of green floo powder floated out of the container that was locked in a glass case so kids couldn’t just floo away. Since Grizzlegore was by no means underage the glass case opened allowing the clump of green powder to float out and into the fire effectively transporting them away in a flash of green flames. “They did tell me that her room was changed to 342.” Grizzlegore remarked as they stepped out of the floo and into the sanctuary lobby.
Tom looked at a nearby sign that showed where the various rooms and where the specialties for each department were. “Ok … 342.” He murmured as they walked through a beaded curtain that scanned them for things they shouldn’t have. As a healer at the desk gave them each a check over Tom’s eyes found the room on the sign. “Wow! She’s in the Hatchery room!”
Grizzlegore looked at the sign as they got approval to go in, “That would explain a lot. Let’s go see her.”
(Is someone listening?)
‘Huh?” Tom froze in place when he heard a tiny voice in his mind.
“Tom?” Grizzlegore asked, wondering why his ward stopped.
“I just heard a voice in my head.” Tom said, wondering if he should be worried.
The goblin thought a moment before smirking, “Just now you say … I wonder if something just hatched in the hatchery.
Tom’s eyes widened and he followed the goblin, (Who are you?) He thought, hoping to figure out if it was possible that he found his familiar.
(I don’t know. I only just cracked my shell … mama wants to know who you are.)
(I’m Tom.) Tom answered in his mind as they got off an elevator that took them to the third floor. In an instant everything on that floor changed.
A healer walked into the hall and immediately recognized him, “Tom! I knew you must be close if a newborn could reach you! Come with me!” The giddy healer exclaimed excitedly and gestured for the pair to follow her quickly. Once they arrived at a set of double doors that were labeled 342 the healer opened them letting a rush of steam come out. “This is the incubation room-whoa!”
A small thing streaked across the floor and tackled Tom to the floor, ‘It’s you!’ Tom’s groaned and tried to recover from getting the wind knocked out of him. His eyes opened when he felt the long heavy weight on him wiggle and felt something tickle his cheek. ‘Yes! Definitely you! My human!’
Tom couldn’t help but smile as the forked tongue of a mini Persephone tickled his neck, ‘Hello to you too.’ He hissed in parseltongue as he looked at the adorable mini basilisk.
The entire newborn looked exactly Persephone save the eyes and coloration of the scales. Instead of the big gold eyes the little snake had big deep pink-ish red eyes. As for the scales they did look stone gray at first, but as you looked closely at them you could see an iridescent quality to the scales. With every shift of the light the colors would change ever so slightly. It was such a lovely trait and Tom suspected Persephone had scales exactly like those in her younger days.
‘I waited so long!’ The young snake hissed and practically bounced on Tom.
‘Long?!’ The healer, Tom and even the goblin jumped before looking in the direction of the the aggressive hissing came from. It seems Persephone was sticking her large scaled head through the double doors. ‘You broke your shell and found him faster than these supposed healers can shove foul medicine in your mouth. There was no long wait.’
The healer’s eyebrow twitched in annoyance, ‘I take offense to that.’ Only Tom and Grizzlegore seemed to notice that she said anything at all. The mother snake was too busy having a stare down with the cheeky baby snake that was flicking its forked tongue at her in a teasing way. ‘Never mind. Now let me give you a quick check up, little one. It will give your human a chance to stand up.’
Tom smiled when he saw the baby basilisk on top of him snuggled into him when the healer tried to take it away, ‘I’ll be right behind you.’
Grizzlegore scoffed as he saw the little basilisk reluctantly allow the healer to pick it up effectively freeing Tom, “A very productive trip. You ok, Tom?”
“Yeah, just got the wind knocked out of me.” Tom whispered to the goblin so the young basilisk couldn’t hear him. With a little help from the surprisingly strong goblin Tom got back up onto his feet and quickly went over to the double where the healer was waiting with the anxious basilisk. ‘See? I’m right here.’
‘Yay! Hurry up, med human. Out of the way, mama! You’re too big!’ The feisty young basilisk demanded.
Persephone revealed her fangs and hissed, ‘How did I lay such an impolite hatchling?’ Persephone grumbled as she pulled her head back so the door swung closed and everyone else could go through the doors to join her in the humid room.
‘Sounds like this one takes after her mother if you ask me.’ The healer mumbled as she set the hatchling on a very sturdy table next to a nest that held an empty cracked egg shell and six whole eggs that were waiting to hatch. Thankfully, the healer made sure to whisper it as Tom passed so only Tom heard and he found it funny. ‘Now I can already tell that you’re a good weight.’ The healer said and used a spell to scan the mini basilisk. She finished the exam by shining the glowing spell in the little snake’s eyes. ‘This little one is a healthy, feisty, female basilisk with her daddy’s eyes so there’s no instant death to worry about, but if her inner eyelids ever do open, bring the victim here and we will treat them.’
Tom smiled as the baby basilisk wasted no time slithering onto his shoulders once the exam was done, ‘Daddy’s eyes, huh … when did you start dating, Persephone?’ He asked as the little snake relaxed around his neck and became his very living scaly scarf.
‘He was one of the few who gave me answers to my questions.’ Persephone shot the healer a look before looking back at Tom, ‘and I realized that I’ve been without good long mating for too long. Luckily for me he was young and willing to please-‘
‘Be quiet, old serpent! You made my human turn red!’ The baby basilisk hissed angrily not realizing that blushing wasn’t a bad thing.
The massive basilisk bared her fangs in amusement, ‘Ah, to be young and naive. Tom is only blushing. He won’t be so embarrassed about mating once he gives it a try with that other green eyed human.’ She gave a hiss that was definitely a serpent version of a laugh once saw Tom’s blush darken. ‘You will find it’s fun to tease the humans one day.’
The young wizard whimpered, ‘I hope not.’ He didn’t need multiple serpents teasing him constantly. Suddenly, his eyes widened as he thought of something.’You were positive that I’d find my familiar … did you know somehow?’
Those large golden eyes softened, ‘It was just a feeling and your feelings can be quite powerful … especially when mating!’ She hissed in amusement and even the healer snickered when a blush exploded back onto Tom’s cheeks.
Grizzlegore wasn’t sure what was being said, but he did know what his pocket watch revealed, ‘It seems it’s getting late so we should cut this visit short for now.’
‘Good. Get that hatching and her pointy tongue away from me. I hope the rest aren’t as much trouble.’ Persephone hissed though Tom could tell she meant it to be a sweet comment.
Tom smiled at the giant serpent, ‘One thing first.’ He looked at the pink-ish red eyes of his new familiar. ‘I need to think of a name for you.’ He said and thought for a moment. His eyes looked over the beautiful basilisk and the iridescent scales stuck out to him. In an instant he knew exactly what would fit the vibrant snake. ‘How about Opal?’
‘Opal … Oooooopaaal … O pal … Opal … I love it! Much nicer than mama’s old fashioned title!’ The serpent hissed happily as she nuzzled Tom’s cheek.
Persephone’s eyes narrowed dangerously and she gave a deadly hiss, ‘Out.’
Tom knew the giant basilisk wasn’t losing her patience, but it might be close so he gestured to Grizzlegore. They had to leave before Opal actually pissed off the new mama basilisk. In no time at all they were at the Gringotts safe house and waiting to hear from Brian and Julian …

It was now time for everyone to yet again gather in the Great Hall. Dinner was not the only reason for this gathering. The biggest reason, and the one everyone was excited about was the drawing from the goblet. In mere moments everyone was going to learn who was going to compete in the Tri-Wizard Tournament!
As the excited students from all four schools filed into the Great Hall, Severus felt a tug on his sleeve and looked down to see Julian, “Is something wrong?” The protective godfather asked.
“Hogwarts tried to tell me that she made Myrtle cry.” Julian said as he gestured towards Rita Skeeter who was taking out an enchanted camera to grab a snapshot of each competitor.
Severus’ sharp black eyes zeroed in on the witch who was hiding more than most would ever think, “I see. I’ll talk to Myrtle after this.” He said mentally cursing Dumbledore for deliberately traumatizing his victim. Even if Myrtle refused to accept what everyone has tried to explain until now, even from Severus, she didn’t deserve whatever Dumbledore said to hurt her.
Silence fell over everyone as the goblet was brought to the front of the room. Starting with Hogwarts two 17 year old students were chosen. Durmstrang and Beauxbatons were next and, yet again, two 17 year olds for each school were chosen, but don’t let the cheering fool you. It was the last school that was the real star of the show.
Despite the day of mingling and getting to know each other the student from magical Britain still saw Legerdemain as the inferior school. From the lack of wands for most of the foreign students to the fact that there are kids as young as five there, it appeared like the school was barely a competitor at all. However, they were about to get a surprise.
‘Before the goblet decides the last two competitors I want you all to remember that this goblet picks the strongest of those who entered for each school, but also keeps things fair. It will be a balance between power and fairness so all the competitors will be, as far as the goblet believes, on the same level of power and skill.” Cornelius said, but he knew that most won’t fully understand until the students for Legerdemain were picked so he just turned to the goblet. With a flicker of the flames a little piece of paper. “For Legerdemain’s first competitor … Julian River White!”
Of course everyone cheered and no one was surprised. All the Hogwarts students already knew Julian was Harry Potter. As a result of the students gossiping over the last few hours everyone knew who Julian really was. Obviously, the one who defeated Voldemort would compete, but what skills could he have without a wand? Many still thought Legerdemain was still going to lose even with the ‘Boy Who Lived’ on their side. In fact, Igor and Maxime were already planning to lure the boy to their schools after the humiliating defeat.
A second piece of paper popped out of the goblet and flew over to the minister, “Sally Devon!”
Igor laughed, “It seems there’s a disadvantage here.” He said as the 10 year old girl came out of the crowd to join Julian.
Minister Fudge smiled, “The goblet wouldn’t allow that. See for yourself. The runes picked the students all on the same level so your 17 year olds are on par with Legerdemain’s 10 and 11 year olds.” He said as he reached for the goblet.
“That can’t be.” Igor snapped, but still tried to be respectful to the minister as he took the goblet to see these runes for himself.
“Skill will be proved during the tournament.” Brian said calmly before looking at Rita Skeeter. “I’m sure i don’t need to tell you that two of the competitors are underage and shouldn’t have names posted without permission.”
Rita sipped her drink and smiled, “Of course! I wouldn’t dream of doing such a thing to a child!” She said as the floating camera snapped some pictures of the 17 year old competitors.
It didn’t matter what disguise Dumbledore wore. Nothing would make Brian comfortable with the sadistic glint in Rita’s eyes when ‘she’ looked at Julian …
