Regardless of the fact that her experiment with Ben had been awkward and for the most part, unfulfilling, Hermione felt a bit of vigor renew in her. She was sure that she was on the right track to getting what she needed; she just had to keep searching.
She spent her evenings trolling muggle London, and found it easier and easier to play confident seductress the more men she propositioned. She ignored the niggling feelings in the back of her mind that she was losing herself. It didn't matter.
She was sure she'd find herself when she found what she needed.
However, it was proving very hard to find. She was starting to think that muggles weren't the answer, easier though they were due to her anonymousness.
When she stepped into Diagon Alley for the first time in months, she wasn't surprised at the whispers and stares. She had kept up on current events, and her whereabouts were a favourite topic amongst the gossiping wizarding public.
She ignored them, striding confidently along the cobblestones, clad in a burgundy fitted robe. She took in the familiar sights, having been restored almost to its pre-war splendor.
She wandered into Flourish and Blotts, unable to resist, and started meandering down the shelves. She quickly lost herself in a thick tome about famous Patronuses through the ages.
“Hermione Granger.” A male voice sounded slightly amused behind her. She turned to take in Theodore Nott Jr., looking the epitome of put-together in navy trousers and a white dress shirt. “A bit of a surprise to see you here.”
“Once upon a time, it wouldn't have been a surprise at all to find me in a bookstore.” She smiled wryly and closed the book.
“I suppose not.” He raised an eyebrow, stifling a chuckle. He hadn't seen this girl since sixth year, and this grown up version of her left him a little shell shocked. None of it showed on his face, however, as even in this time of peace he was still in the habit of schooling his expressions. “What brings you in today?” He asked.
Hermione realized then that he lacked a traveling cloak and was holding a mish mash of books in his hand. “Are you… do you work here?” She inquired, and at this, he did crack a smile.
“I'm the owner.” He set his stack of books on a nearby trolley. “Didn't have the heart to change the name. I thought the familiarity would be comforting to people.”
Hermione nodded. She hadn't realized Flourish and Blotts had changed hands, but the more she thought about it, it had likely happened to many of the businesses that were ravaged by the war. “That was thoughtful of you,” she said.
“I have my moments.” He slid a book back onto the shelf. “So, is there something specific you're looking for?” He asked, and she smiled slyly.
Yes, there was something specific she was looking for, but it had nothing to do with books. Theo had been the resident Slytherin bookworm, stoic and professional. Many girls found him attractive, but were intimidated by his dispassionate demeanor.
She chewed over whether he could help her or not. On the surface, one could assume he was a prudish nerd, but he was a Slytherin, and a Death Eater’s son at that. There was a good chance he had a bad boy streak in him and she wanted to find out.
“I don't particularly have anything in mind,” Hermione said, “I'm honestly craving some fluffy muggle fiction to pass the time. Sometimes it's a good distraction.”
“Ah, I can't say I have any of that here.” Theo shook his head. “But I hear you're living in muggle London. I'm sure there are lots of bookstores.”
“There are,” she replied, “I was just feeling nostalgic today.” She sighed. “Have you ever read muggle books?”
“I have a bit of a collection,” he admitted, and smiled at her shocked expression. “I find human biology and environmental science interesting. I've often wondered how some of those scientists would react to a wizard’s physiology.”
Hermione was surprised. “Me, too.”
They stared at each other for a moment, neither of them sure where to take the conversation. She didn't know how to read his expression, his face a mask of indifference.
“Would you like to…” she stumbled over what she wanted to say. “Would you like to come to some book shops with me? In muggle London?” She mentally kicked herself for her awkwardness. This wasn't how it was supposed to go.
“Only if there will also be coffee.” Theo smiled slightly. “Espresso is another wonderful muggle invention.”
Hermione chuckled, breaking the tension. “I agree.”
