Rodolphus smiled as he released Roark to allow him to turn into Harry's arms, hugging him tightly. Suddenly, they all felt the tenuous control Roark had on his magic, slip as he began to cry.
"Ethan?" came the worried question from Roark Sr., rising slowly to his feet, turning to his son as Roark burrowed into Harry.
The lights flickered. The sunroom began to warm alarmingly as Roark's magic reacted to his extreme emotional distress, building...coiling, ready to strike out at anything it perceived as a threat.
Ethan looked away from Roark, shaking his head as he rubbed a hand over his face. "I think we need to leave him to Harry, Rabastan, and Rodolphus for the moment. His mind is in too much of a chaotic mess for me to latch onto any single thought...except for shock, of course. There's a lot of intense pain in there too. He's also very angry."
"No real surprise there," Severus spoke up softly from where he leaned against Dacian. A smirk suddenly twisted his lips as he looked around the room. "Personally, I'm rather surprised he hasn't blown the house apart."
"Testament to just how good his control actually is, even though there are several very large cracks," Roan spoke up from where he sat with Dylan and Colten, their arms around him.
"Just how bad is it really?" one of the cousins asked.
"Bad. We are going to have a great deal of work ahead of us just to get him completely grounded and centered within himself. Having all those seals and bindings come down at once...?" he shook his dark head. "It's really a wonder our little brother is still sane."
"So none of you had no idea he was actually a Durin?"
"NONE. If we had, trust me when I say we would have stopped at nothing to reclaim him, and you damn well KNOW that, Adama!" Thorin's tone was a whole hell of a lot sharper than he really intended it to be, still--
"Thorin," Roark turned to his brother. "Don't my brother. I think there is more than enough blame to pass around because of the decisions made. There is certainly more than enough guilt for not realizing...for not KNOWING that Roark was ours. Our gifts, for all that they're powerful, are not infallible."
Thorin gave a nod at that, heaving a sigh as he rubbed a hand over his face. "That is very true. Payton? What is it?" he asked in concern when he saw just how pale his nephew had suddenly gone.
"On Aquaria," he began after a few microns of collecting his thoughts. "That day we ran into Rodolphus in front of that Cantina. Remember?" He looked over at Ethan, to Colten, then he turned to look at Harry, whose head had lifted to look at him. "After Rodolphus had left us," he looked now at Roark, "giving us those warnings that Riddle had just placed the order to have all of us dealt with. We began to talk about Leo and about Dad, the attack. It was brought up that Roark had only been a few days old."
A much calmer Roark lifted his head from his brother's chest, returning now to Rodolphus' arms. "I remember that conversation," he said with a slight smile, his voice made deeper...huskier because of his emotions. "I had jokingly made a comment about what if I had been adopted. What if I hadn't been born on Caprica, but Leo? I could have been that long lost baby brother you all mourned so deeply, and were so determined to find. The three of you got very quiet, and I remember how you looked at each other--" he broke off suddenly to look over at his brother. "So...oo, THAT'S what you meant. You knew I was adopted."
Harry nodded. "I was planning to call grandfather that night, tell him that we REALLY needed to stop making excuses and tell you the truth. I never got the chance because things began to move very quickly after that, and truthfully...it just plain slipped my mind. It was the comment about you possibly being born on Leo. I knew of their missing brother...That you HAD been born on Leo...The thought that you could actually be him--" Harry broke off, feeling Rabastan's arms wrap around him. "When those three went so quiet, looking at each other...I just knew they were discussing the possibility privately."
Ethan nodded. "Especially as we knew that he had been adopted, and as we began to add things up...The timing was perfect, and the thought that you COULD be our long-missing baby brother. Well, to say we were determined to get to the bottom of it would be an understatement. But as Harry said, when things began to move so quickly, it just plain slipped our minds."
Roark nodded, looking up at Roark Sr. His father. "So, now what?"
