Chapter 27 A Teaser
Severus left Hogwarts through the exit at the Whomping Willow, and found himself walking through Hogsmeade, the streets surprisingly quiet. The night was unseasonably cold, and the taverns were packed. He walked by the Three Broomsticks, tucking his head slightly into the collar of his robe. Certainly not the place to go tonight. Even, if by some gift of the gods he wasn't recognized, and his absence from the castle remarked upon (and it would be, as all good members of the Order should be in the castle preparing)- he wouldn't feel comfortable in the warm cheeriness of the tavern. Too open. Too festive. Too cordial. It wouldn't do. The Hog's Head? Thor's frozen balls. Albus would know within minutes that he wasn't at Hogwarts. Unless. A brief smile crossed the wizard's face. A flask of polyjuice brewed from the hair of an unsuspecting Muggle was standard equipment for a Death Eater. And he wouldn't be hearing from the Dark Lord for a while yet. He pulled the flask out of an inner pocket of his robes, took a healthy swallow, and waited. Already he could taste the firewhisky; harsh, but scotch or brandy would give him away. He walked the back streets of Hogsmeade, his wand at the ready until the numbing chill left his hands and feet to give way to the effects of polyjuice. Not bothering to catch a glimpse of himself in an store window, he walked into the Hog's Head, ducking his head like all customers did, settling himself at a small table half-hidden from the door. He grunted his order and waited.
Fools. Did they really think that their 'Order' was perfect? That no one would be able to break the spells - weak spells, by Death Eater standards - that ensured loyalty? Fools. Did they really think that after looking down on him, pitying him, even despising him, for years, that he wouldn't consider other options? Was Albus so misguided that he believed his 'transformation'?
The firewhisky arrived and he grunted for another one to be brought to him forthwith. Ah. The riches, the power, the glory that the Dark Lord would bestow upon him. The Snape family name would regain its influence, quashing the Malfoy name into the filth of history in the process. And Hermione. He would let the Dark Lord allow a few Death Eaters to have her; while Lucius, Draco, and Harry Potter (his mind almost spat out the last name) watched helplessly. And then, after Lucius was drawn and quartered, but before his beating heart was pulled out of his still live chest, he, Severus Snape, Most Loyal to the Dark Lord, would beg that Hermione be spared, she and her unborn child to be given to him as slaves. So Lucius could know the feeling that his betrothed - his beloved - was going to be enslaved to him, Severus, and that Lucius' child would be cleaning chamber pots - and worse - for the rest of his life. The Malfoy name would end, and all that Lucius loved would be enslaved to him. Severus swallowed the second firewhisky, and ordered a third while considering Hermione.
Yes, Hermione. Once she could have been a concubine with good status. Maybe he would have even considered her as a third or fourth wife in time. But now? She would beg to be his slave, rather than be literally worn out by the Death Eaters, suffering a most humiliating and painful death. Second only to that of her lover's, that is. He could already envision her, in scraps of rags, cleaning out used vials, scrubbing floors, and, oh yes, for sentimental reasons that she would come to understand, harvesting flobberworm mucus. And she would also be at his beck and call. Any time. Any place. And most certainly any way. She would beg for a kind touch, purr at his caresses, and perform like the most skilled courtesan in the world if he ever chose to take her to bed. Not that he would be likely to do that; the Death Eaters did tend to wear a woman out, even if they didn't kill her.
Lucius, he mused silently, this one time, you should have let me have the girl. Just this once.

A/N *ahem. Yeah, so I'm still alive. Lets just say that real life has interfered with things. And while I can leave Lucius Bookshelves hanging (sort of. Id really love to give Hermione and Lucius a big send-off with swords and dragons, and well, family members (I wont say more, in case I DO get inspired, and find time)), I HAVE to get this story around the big sticking point: WTF do they do when the time comes to appear before Voldemort? Ive been through about a thousand scenarios in my head, and Ill readily admit that this mini-chapter is a teaser. I always knew what Severus was going to do (at least short term), but I havent been certain about how Lucius is going to try to save his family. And Im working on it.
So yeah, this is a teaser, but I am working on it. If my new puppy doesnt jump on the keyboard and blow away pages of work (*ahem, Fiona), it might happen faster. As it is, it is happening. Thanks for your continued support through my VERY LONG absence! And forgive me for any technical/theoretical errors/inconsistencies - they'll get sorted out. And yes, the plot continues to thicken. I actually do have a map for this mess, and I can already give you the body count.... But that would give the story away, wouldn't it? *grin. Not to worry, I DO know where I'm going, it's just taking me A LONG TIME to get there.... (Seems to be to story of my life....)
And as for the typos (other than the obvious ones!) that show up in this and other stories, I think it was caused when AFF moved servers, and I havent have the time to update things. Gods willing, I will get to it. Otherwise, just fill in the blanks as you see fit, like the old MadLibs! :-D
