Chapter 25: All I Want for Christmas Is You
December 24th
“It’s almost sickening to watch those two
together,” Draco said with a smirk. He
and Harry were standing on the entrance steps, watching Remus and Roslyn walk
along hand-in-hand. He pulled Harry
close to him and placed a kiss in his hair.
“Every time they kiss or smile at each other I feel like someone has
dumped a whole butterbeer down my throat.”
“Ron and Blaise say the same thing about us,
love,” Harry murmured.
Draco snorted.
“Maybe, but its not like they’re any better with ‘Mione and Gin.”
“You’re right about that, but Harry gets a
sickeningly puppy dog-like look on his face when ever he looks at you,” Blaise
said from behind them.
Draco looked over his shoulder at his friend
and rolled his eyes. “Yes, and you light
up like a Muggle Christmas tree whenever Ginny walks into a room.”
“Where’s Ron,” Harry asked, directing the
question towards Blaise.
“He went to order Hermione away from the
library,” Blaise said with a smile.
“She’s still trying to find us some ideas as to the identity of the last
Horcrux.”
Draco let Harry go as his lover stiffened in
his arms. Harry looked rather
upset. “She agreed to lay off the
research until after New Year’s Day.”
Blaise chuckled. “Come on, Harry, you know better than we do
just how driven that girl gets. I’m sure
she’ll take the rest of the holiday off.”
“Blaise is right, Harry,” Draco said quietly
as he spotted Remus and Roslyn making their way back towards the school.
“I’m sure he is,” Harry said with a wry
smile. “Do you guys know where Eris is
hiding?”
“She’s in the common room with Ginny worrying
about Nox,” Blaise said quietly, looking around.
“Ah yes,” Harry said with a small laugh. “He’s the last person she should be worrying
about. He knows what he’s doing. Besides, she can feel that he’s safe is she’d
just concentrate on that instead of what could happen to him.”
Draco frowned at his mate. “This is odd, Harry. You’re usually the one worrying about
everyone else.”
Harry shrugged. “Of course I’m worried about what could
happen to him being so close to Voldemort.
It’s just that he’s sending a sense of confidence and warmth through our
bond. It’s hard to be afraid for him
when I can feel that.”
Draco sighed and looked out across
the snow covered grounds. That was when
he noticed a small, black spec running towards them. “Either way, I don’t think she needs to worry
anymore. Here comes Nox.”
The
“ferret” quickly scurried up the steps, scaled Harry’s leg, and curled into the
young wizard’s arms. Draco
chuckled. It seemed that poor, old, Nox didn’t like running about in the snow. “Come on, boys. Let’s get Nox up to
the common room so Eris can spoil him rotten.”
________________________________________________________________________
Severus sighed. “There’s no need to worry about it,
Black. Voldemort’s
plan actually works in our favor. If we
can come up with a suitable story for how Eris came into possession of Nox the ferret then I will be able to remain with her at
all hours of the day. She’ll always have
someone to watch her back.”
He saw that Eris was going to
begin protesting again and sat back to prepare a defense against the next
tirade. “This is not acceptable,
Severus. I realize that as our mentor
you have a responsibility to protect Harry and I, but
we can’t have you risking your position as a spy. The moment you shift out of your animagus for to protect me your cover is blown, not to
mention that any non-Order member who sees you will call the aurors straight away.
That not only endangers you but Draco and I as
well. I’m skating on thin ice as it is
and Draco’s fate is tied to mine because he pledged his allegiance to me form
the beginning, not the Order!”
“Are you quite finished, young lady,” Severus
snapped. “Things are quickly coming to a
head. We may not have managed to
discover the final Horcrux, but that does not mean
that the Dark Lord is going to sit back a wait for us…”
“Don’t call him that,” Eris snarled.
Severus took a deep breath and
started again. “Eris, please. This act will keep me well in Voldemort’s graces.
It will give him a false sense of security, thinking that he could
snatch you away from your brother at the first sign of battle. We need this leverage.”
He could see and feel that Eris
still wanted to protest, but she was holding herself back. “Very well. I’ll see you all in the morning.”
Severus watched with everyone else
as Eris marched away to her dorm room.
He felt that she was behaving like a petulant child, but understood the
reasoning behind it. She was frightened. Ron Weasley, on the other hand, didn’t seem
to understand what had just happened.
“Blimey, has she gone barmy? We
haven’t even had supper yet!”
Severus just shook his head and
went off to his lab to begin brewing several batches of specific healing
potions. He had a feeling that they were
going to need them soon. He only wished
that he could say how soon.

December 25th
Sirius was sitting with everyone
else in their cozy common room. They had
decided to hold off opening their presents until later that evening when the
rest of the Weasley family would be arriving to celebrate the holiday with
them. He’d spent most of the morning
watching Eris mope about and refuse to interact with anyone. When had she started acting like such a
little child? Maybe she just didn’t like
Christmas very much. He hadn’t really
considered that until this moment. Come
to think of it, he doubted anyone else had either.
That was
when the strangest thing happened. Eris
suddenly jumped up from her chair with a big smile on her face and grabbed onto
Severus’ arm. “Come on, Sev! Transform and
we can go play in the snow. Harry! Harry, do you want to go play in the
snow? Well, I’m going outside, guys. Anyone who wants to come
just meet me out on the grounds.”
Sirius just watched with his mouth
hanging open as Eris ran up to her dorm and reappeared only a moment or two
later fully dressed for the winter weather.
She flounced out the door with a giggle and a wave.
He turned a suspicious glare on
Severus then. “What did you do to her?”
“Absolutely nothing,” Severus snapped. “The girl is obviously loosing her mind.”
Sirius looked around the room and
noticed Hermione smiling at Roslyn. The
bushy-haired witch giggled and asked the DADA professor, “Cheering Charm?”
“Nice and strong,” Roslyn said with a bright smile. “So, who wants to go play in the snow?”
Sirius leapt to his feet and
dashed up into his dorm room to throw on a warm cloak, boots, mittens, and
cap. Harry and the other boys were close
behind him. As Sirius rushed towards the
portrait hole he heard a loud squeak.
Glancing down he saw Severus in his animagus
form, glaring at him reproachfully.
“Sorry, old man. I wasn’t going to leave without you, I swear!”
He bent down and picked Nox up, placing him on his shoulder. Without waiting for the others, Sirius
hurried out into the corridor and down into the entrance hall. Though it had taken a Cheering Charm to
achieve it, he felt immensely happy that Eris was going to loosen up for the
day. Maybe there really was something
about Christmas that bothered her. Some
of the others had suggested it. If so,
he didn’t think that bringing it up would really help anything. She would have to come out and say it on her
own, or at least give him some sort of opening.
He stepped out into the fresh air,
closed his eyes and took a deep breath only to get hit right in the face with a
snowball. Gasping and spluttering, the
first thing Sirius did was grab a hold of Nox, who
was nearly knocked to the ground by the force of the projectile. “Hey! There are innocent animals here.”
He heard a high pitched giggling,
but could pin down where it was coming from.
Eris was using a Disillusionment Charm.
It wouldn’t save her if she moved too quickly. All he had to do was wait for the opportune moment
to strike. He crouched to the ground and
gathered up a snowball. That was when
the others burst out through the doors.
The noise was enough to distract him for just a moment, allowing Eris to
send another chunk of snow flying into her face.
“Oh, come on now! Play fair,” Ron cried. He’d barely spoken the words when dozens of
snowballs began to whiz towards their whole group.
Sirius grabbed a hold of Nox and dove for cover behind a bush. “She’s got her little house elves helping her! It’s got to be them.”
“It could be a charm,” Hermione cried from behind a snow pile where she
was crouched with Ginny and Blaise.
“Or both,” Draco hollered above the noise of
exploding snowballs.
Sirius frowned in thought for a
moment before holding Nox close to him. “Okay, old man, its
up to you. Can you find her for us?”
Nox gave
a little squeak and a minute nod of his head.
He scurried away and Sirius prepared to attack Eris in turn, holding his
wand at the ready. Mentally shuffling
through every spell he knew, he picked out a particularly handy charm and began
replicating his single snowball. He
began levitating the lot just it time to hear Nox’s
loud squeaks. Poking his nose over the
top of the hedge he saw Nox bouncing around in the
snow, following after a blurry patch of space.
“Hermione, cancel her charm,” Sirius
yelled. As soon as the young witch
complied, he sent his batch of snowballs flying at Eris. The girl fell to the ground laughing
loudly. Soon, Jelly, Linken,
Tinken, and Gog popped into
the open, intent on rescuing their mistress.
He noticed that Sloopy was missing, but
figured that the young elf was too busy caring for baby Slinky.
In the
end, Greg joined Eris’ team and the lot of them enjoyed a long afternoon of
snowballs, snowmen, and even snow-angels.
They didn’t abandon their playing until the Weasleys
arrived with Felicity close behind them.
Sirius and Eris were still standing outside catching their breath a few
minutes after everyone else had gone inside.
Standing there on the steps, looking at Eris’ flushed cheeks and still
bright smile, Sirius could only wish to have this forever. He found his mind wandering to the many possible
future Christmases that could arrive.
Visions of playing these same games with little green and grey eyed
children filled his mind. He could
picture Eris standing in the same place, her cheeks just as flushed, but her
tummy was swollen with the life of their child.
He could see their little ones playing with Ron and Hermione’s, Harry
and Draco’s, and maybe even Roslyn and Remus’ if things progressed well.
“What are you thinking about,” Eris asked softl.
Sirius offered her a slight
smile. “The future.”
“But you were smiling,” Eris said.
“Yes,” Sirius said with a nod. “It was a very good future.”
Eris turned and stared off in the
direction of the lake. “The future never
makes me smile.”
Sirius moved up behind her and
wrapped his arms around her waist. “Do
you want to know what I see when I look into the future?”
Eris stiffened in his arms and he bent his
head to place a soft kiss on the side of her neck. A shiver swept through her and then she
relaxed. When she spoke it was a raspy
whisper. “Please tell me.”
He put his lips to her ear and
whispered softly, “I see you, pregnant, smiling like you did all day
today. I see me playing with our other
children, chasing them around in the snow as Snuffles. I see Draco and Harry bringing their little
ones to play with ours. I see nothing
but love and happiness.”
Sirius smiled in the silence and
quickly darkening light. Then he felt
Eris shaking. He turned her around and
saw tears running down her cheeks. “What
did I say, love?”
“I’m sorry, Sirius,” Eris said softly. She stepped close to him and placed a hand to
his cheek. “As much as I want to…I’ll
never be able to give you those things.”
“Why,” he asked.
“I’ll never live long enough to give you what
you want…what you deserve.”
“What can you give me,” Sirius asked, gazing
down into her eyes.
Eris looked at him for several long moments in
silence. “I don’t know how much time I
have, Sirius.”
How could
she be so morbid? What had those bastards
done or said to her to make her believe that there was no chance for her to
make it out of this war alive? Sirius
even had a brief moment where he wondered if Severus felt the same way as Eris
about his own position. Was that why so
few Death Eaters made it out of Voldemort’s ranks
alive? Added to his list of evidence was
Regulus. His brother didn’t exactly
stand as an encouraging example of what happened to defectors. He was going to have to talk to Severus about
this. Eris was taking her fear too far.
“None of us know how much time we have these
days, Eris,” Sirius said gently. “I’ll I
can ask is that…if you would truly want to have me…at least consider not
waiting. With how strongly I’ve come to
feel about you I would rather have a few months of loving you then having to
deal with your death and having only these memories of the two of us at odds
more often than not. I want to remember
kissing you. I want to remember the way
it will feel when we finally bond.”
Eris’ eyes were shining with more
tears. “I can try, Sirius, but…but I
can’t bond with you. There are just too
many strings attached. I don’t want to
be cruel. I know it’s what you want, but
if you’d just stop pushing the issue I think we could be okay.”
“And when it happens anyway, because we’re
caught up in the moment,” Sirius said harshly.
“How will you treat me then? I
feel like it has to be all or nothing, Eris.
I just know things are going to turn out for the worst if we try to do
this thing half assed.”
“Just try to do things my way,” Eris said
softly. “Give me time. I feel the same way that you do…really, but
there are things you can’t understand.”
“I could if you explained them to me,” Sirius
said gently. He just needed to get her
to explain everything. No more of these half baked
explanations.
“Some day you’ll understand well enough,” Eris
said firmly. “You’ll understand and
you’ll be thankful.”
“I love you,” Sirius said, grasping Eris by
her arms. “I love you with every bit of
my soul. How much proof do you need?”
“I don’t.
Be...Because I feel it too.” Eris
closed her eyes and Sirius felt his chest tighten. “I love you beyond anything I ever thought I
could feel for anyone. Please, Sirius, just let me give you what I can.”
Promising
to himself that he would find the truth yet, Sirius nodded. “Now give me a kiss.”
Eris gave him a strange look. “Bit demanding aren’t you?”
Sirius laughed. “No, but we’re under the
mistletoe and I don’t want to have bad luck for the rest of my holiday.”
Eris laughed lightly and tipped
her head up to accept her kissed. Sirius
kept it light and chaste. She tasted
wonderful and a warm feeling opened up inside of him. It felt like a victory…even if it was a small
one.”

January 2nd
As the Christmas holiday came
close to an end, Eris kept reflecting on the things she had promised
Sirius. She knew that he was right to
question her. What would she do if they
ended up bonded the first time they shared a passionate kiss and no one was
there to halt things? Still, he seemed
to feel so strongly about everything and she no longer felt like she could
simply push him away or even just keep him a friend. There needed to be some level of intimacy
between them, a way for them to express their affection, or the pull of their
magic reaching out to each other would eventually drive them mad.
She kept a close watch on how
Sirius and Severus were interacting.
Things seemed to keep getting better between them and that put her mind
a little more at ease. At times, she was
almost certain that they considered one another friends, but they would never
admit it. She often wondered if they
even realized how drastically their relationship had changed. Perhaps they were just too close to the
situation to really see.
She was currently holed away in
her little side room, pouring over every manuscript she possessed that
discussed the Numina Pumilum. It had taken her nearly an hour to find the
passage that discussed surrogates for same sex mates. It was not a topic that many of the books
touched on, mostly because it wasn’t something where there was a similar
parallel in the wizarding world. Homosexuality was just as common as it was
anywhere else, but bloodlines and children were so important and well protected
that a surrogate would never be considered.
The same could not be said for elves and part elves. Going extinct tended to change a species
views.
Reading each line slowly so as not
to miss any pertinent information, Eris carefully studied what the text had to
offer.
It is
not uncommon amongst the Numina Pumilum
for same sex matings to occur. A bisexual mentality is generally maintained
by all of these “High Elves” for the sake of rendering their search for a mate
that much easier. Part elves do not
exhibit this same consistent bisexual quality, but it is not uncommon amongst
them. When a same sex mating occurs, the
elves (or elf if it is an elf-wizard/witch pairing) will be able to sense a
third, female extension of the mating who will serve as surrogate mother to all
children the pair should choose to have.
While it is not entirely clear how the child is formed, research does
tell us that the surrogate mother is nothing more than a vessel and the child
shares none of her blood or heritage.
This seems to suggest that the creation of the child and implantation
into the surrogate mother are an entirely magical process requiring no sexual
intercourse.
Eris sat back in her chair and
stared up at the ceiling. None of this
surprised her too much. She’d been aware
that elves were capable of creating children with their mates with only the use
of magic. It was all part of the bonding
process in the case of male-female mated pairs.
Instantaneous pregnancy, the perfect way to ensure that mated pairs are completely attached in every way. This wasn’t what interested Eris the most
though. What she was learning by reading
in between the lines was that no one had ever heard that heterosexual mated
pairs couldn’t also use surrogates in
case of emergencies. With any luck, that
meant she was on the trail of a loophole that would save her a good deal of
misery when push came to shove.
Now she just needed to have a long
talk with Naiya and Tahdei
to make sure her theory wasn’t nothing more than a pipe dream.
