Chapter 28 A Trick Proposal
Severus held on to her, rubbing her back as she accepted what she learned in Lucius Malfoy’s mind. Right now he could happily strangle Malfoy with his bare hands and feel no remorse whatsoever.
But that was not going to help Sky. The man would stop at nothing to get what he wanted. He was too well connected at the Ministry and if he decided that Draco was going to marry Sky, Severus would need to act quickly. He’d been going to wait, give her time to adjust to him and his ways.
“Sky,” He tilted her chin with his fingers so she would look at him. “I know this does not seem like the best time to be saying this. I was going to wait a while, give you some more time to …well I was going to ask you eventually. Will you … you … oh hell. Will you marry me?”
Her eyes took on a puzzled mien. “Will I what?”
“Oh Gods, please don’t make me say it again.”
“I don’t know what you want, Severus. You want what Malfoy wants. What does marry mean?”
His jaw dropped. It never occurred to him she would have no understanding of the word.
“To marry someone is to take a vow to spend the rest of your life with that person; to love and cherish that person above all others. If you agree to marry me, I promise to love and cherish you above all others. I already do. Also if we marry soon, there will be no way for Lucius to find a way to force you into marriage with his son.”
“Oh. So what do I have to do?”
“Just say yes. I will see to the rest.”
Sky didn’t really understand what she was agreeing to but Severus did make her feel safe. And she certainly didn’t want to be taken to the Malfoy’s house.
“Yes.” She told him and before she knew what was happening she was pulled tight against his chest in a bear hug. Her face was pressed to his coat and she couldn’t breath. It was the muffled unintelligible noises coming from her that alerted him to the fact that he was probably suffocating her and he relaxed his grip to allow her to breathe.
He was just so happy that she said yes. Relieved that she would be all his. He knew she did not fully understand what she just agreed to do but Severus did not care. She would be his and his alone. No one else could lay claim to her once they were married.
“I’ll speak with Albus immediately. The sooner we are wed the better.”
Severus left to see the Headmaster straight away, leaving Sky slightly dazed and wondering what was going on. ‘What did I just agree to do? Maybe I should speak to Rowena or Sal. But none of the Founders had ever mentioned getting married so they probably don’t know any more about it then I do. And they might ask me why and that’ll lead to questions about Malfoy. Best I don’t bother them with it. Severus knows what he’s doing.’
She decided to wait and see what he had to say when he came back from Albus’ office. Thoughts of Malfoy brought back the images she’d seen in his head and she tried to shrug them off. Then she started thinking about what Albus said about working. She liked that idea.
Needing something to do while she waited for Severus, she went to her desk and started rifling through the drawers. There were mostly empty apart from parchment, quill, and ink. She found a box of grey sticks and lifted them out. Taking one from the box, she ran it over a piece of blank parchment. Depending on how she angled it, she got different effects from it. She liked what she could do and taking another piece of parchment, Sky made her first attempt at drawing.
When Severus arrived at the Headmasters office he found the old man very out of sorts; that alone was unusual.
“Ah Severus, I am glad you came to see me. It seems Lucius is going to use his connections at the Ministry to ensure that Sky and Draco are married as soon as possible. He means to go ahead with this, Severus.”
“It does not matter, Albus. She already agreed to marry me. That is why I am here. We want to arrange it for as soon as possible. When can you perform the ceremony? I want a traditional handfasting, then no one can break it.”
“She has agreed to this Severus? Well that is good news for both of you. I can perform the ceremony this evening if you are agreeable. The sooner you are wed, the less time Lucius will have to interfere.”
“This evening then Headmaster. Any particular time suit you?”
“Midnight, Severus, vows given at midnight are always strongest.”
Severus rushed back to the dungeons to tell Sky they were to be wed this evening. She would have plenty of time later to find out what it meant being married to him. He knew it was unfair, but it was for the best and he was not willing to risk anyone else getting their hands on her. She was his and that was all that mattered at the moment; his to keep and his to keep safe; his to love.
“Tonight.” He told her a bit breathlessly.
“Tonight what Severus?”
“Tonight at midnight, we shall have our handfasting.”
What’s a handfasting? I thought you wanted to get married.”
“A handfasting is the wizarding equivalent of a wedding.”
As Sky watched him, he went to the fire, took a handful of floo powder from the small chest on the mantle and threw it into the flames. Sticking his head into the now green flames, he called.
“Professor McGonagal’s office.”
“Yes Severus, is something the matter?”
“Nothing at all, Minerva, although I would appreciate it if you would come to my quarters immediately. I would value your assistance at this time.”
“”I’m coming through, stand back.”
Minerva was nothing if not curious and came through the floo, wondering why on earth Severus would require her assistance.
“Well? Are you going to tell me?” She asked, brushing soot from her clothes.
“I will, if you first take a wizard’s oath not to reveal what I am about to tell you, at least not before tomorrow.”
“Severus Snape, how can you expect me to take an oath when I have no idea what I am taking it for.?”
“Either you take the oath Minerva or we forget the whole thing.”
His face was serious and he frowned at the older woman while he waited for her to decide. It took all of five seconds.
“Oh very well. I swear not to divulge what you are about to tell me. Until tomorrow.”
There was a quick rush of magic that seemed to flow about the woman and then it disappeared.
“There. Now will you tell me?”
“Certainly. Sky and I are to be married. Tonight in fact, at midnight. It is to be a traditional handfast. I would appreciate it if you would be Sky’s attendant as she has no one else.”
“Oh my goodness what a shock. Of course I shall do whatever I can to help, but why the suddenness?”
“It is not sudden Minerva, we have brought it forward, that is all. As to why, let us say that a certain Malfoy has unwelcome designs on my intended.”
“Oh Merlin.”
She turned to Sky. “Right then. We’d best see what you have in your wardrobe young lady. Come along. Severus, you root out anything you may need and take them up to Albus’ rooms.”
“Why would I want to do that?”
“Because you are not to see your bride before the ceremony that is why. You should not even be here now so hurry. I want you out of here.”
Severus was gob smacked. He was being thrown out of his own rooms.
“I think Sky would prefer it if I stayed. Is that not right Sky?”
“I … err don’t know. I’m not sure what’s happening Severus.”
“You heard her. Now get your things and go, NOW.”
Minerva had her hands on her hips and the look she gave Severus made him think again about arguing further. And Sky was no help because she did not even know what was happening, not really. He huffed and grumbled as he gathered his best ceremonial robes, clean underwear and toiletries and his best shoes.
“This is absurd. I do not see why I am being ejected from my own rooms.”
“Because it is tradition, Severus, you cannot see the bride in her wedding gown before the ceremony. Goodbye.”
She ushered him out of the door before he could complain further and turned to a rather panic stricken Sky. “Don’t worry dear. All brides are nervous just before they are wed. Now, do you have a wedding gown?”
“No.” She answered quietly.
Minerva opened the wardrobe. Apart from the green gown Sky had already worn there were only jeans, jumpers, t shirts and a couple of sun dresses.
“No, no. This will never do. Come on, we’re taking a trip to Diagon Alley. I am good friends with Madam Malkin. She won’t mind opening up if she thinks she will make a few galleons.”
Sky still had not said a word, but when the woman grabbed some floo powder to throw into the fire, she shouted.
“No.”
Minerva turned to her confused.
“I don’t want to go in the fire. I know where the shop is. We can go this way. Less chance of getting burnt.”
“Sky, dear, we cannot get to Madam Malkin’s through your bedroom door. Besides, I have never heard of anyone getting burnt when they travelled by floo.”
“Please Professor, I don’t want to go in that.” She pointed at the fire. “We can go through here. Look.”
Minerva looked at Sky as though she thought the girl mad but when she looked through the door and saw the inside of Malkin’s shop, she held her tongue; more through shock then choice. They stepped through the front door of the shop, Madam Malkin unaware of the route Minerva and her young charge had just taken.
“Hello Minerva. What are you doing here. I was just about to lock up.”
“I’m sorry Minny. But this is something of an emergency. We need a wedding gown and we need it for tonight. I am willing to pay whatever it costs.”
Sky looked at Minerva curiously. This was something else she had never come across … paying and costs. Malfoy said something about her paying her way and Severus said he would pay for her keep.
“Professor. I haven’t got anything to pay with. Maybe we should go back. I’m sorry to have been a nuisance but I didn’t realise.”
Minerva and Minny both turned to her with sad faces.
“Have we met before?”
“Yes ma’am, three years ago when Professor Snape brought me for my robes.”
“Of course, I remember now. You were a very shy, timid little thing and he was so mean to you. I remember you had bruises around your arm. I thought then that it was because of the way he kept grabbing your arm and dragging you everywhere. But never mind him, let’s find you wedding gown.”
“I can’t, I don’t have anything to pay with. Please Professor, can we go.”
Sky was close to tears and wanted to go home. Minerva put a hand on her shoulder.
“Don’t you go worrying about payment. This is my wedding present to you. After all it was my idea to come here and as your attendant it is my duty to see that you are properly attired. So come on. Let’s find you a gown.”
Minerva carried on chatting to Minny as they ushered Sky through to the back of the shop. She was made to try on gown after gown after gown. Sky didn’t like any of them. Most of them made her look like a blancmange and the rest were covered in bows or frills or something called cupids. While the two older women argued, Sky wandered over to a rack in the far corner, near the door that led into the shop proper. Something had caught her eye and she walked over to look at it. Pulling the gown from the rail, she took one look and knew it was what she wanted.
“Please Professor, can I try this one on?”
The women turned and looked at her surprised, as if they forgot she was even there.
“It’s very plain looking Sky. Why would you want to try that one?”
“I just do. It’s simple and nice.” But she was disappointed at the looks on their faces and turned to put it back.
Both women raised their eyebrows and Madam Malkin held aside the curtain that led into the changing room. “Come on. In here.”
Sky padded in with the gown and took of her clothes for the umpteenth time that night. She was tired, her feet hurt and she was hungry. She was also sick of the sight of gowns. As soon as she put the gown on and looked in the mirror she knew it was the one, and it adjusted itself until it fitted perfectly. It was sleeveless with a sweetheart neckline. The bodice was in rich royal blue velvet and ended in a vee on her lower abdomen. Laced up the front with a matching velvet ribbon. From there the skirt, made of cream velvet flowed down to the floor in an a-line. Thin royal blue velvet ribbons of the same silk fastened the bodice, ran down the length of the skirt at intervals. The blue matched perfectly with her eyes which at the moment were bright with wonder. It hung perfectly and she loved it. She stepped out of the cubicle and Minerva’s face lit up.
“Oh sweet Circe. Look at you.”
Minerva laid her hands gently on Sky’s shoulders and turned her round slowly.
“Oh yes. This gown is perfect.”
“Do you like it? I like it.”
“Darling it’s beautiful.”
Madam Malkin told her. “Just a minute. I need to get something. The woman went through to the shop and reappeared two minutes later carrying two boxes which she placed on one of the chairs.
“Here. Put these on.”
She passed Sky a pair of Blue velvet slippers that matched the dress. Then she opened the other box and drew out a cape. It was cream velvet and had the same blue velvet ribbons around the neck and running the length of the cape. She placed it around Sky’s shoulders and fastened the ribbon at her neck. The cape only reached as far as her arms. Instead of covering her completely it was open at the front, covering her upper arms and falling open to show the gown beneath. Madam Malkin then produced a hairbrush from somewhere and brushed Sky’s hair until it shone. Pulling back only the sides of her hair from her face, she fastened it at the back with a slide and moved Sky to stand in front of the mirror again.
Minerva waved her wand and another mirror appeared behind her. Now she could see herself from the front and the back.
“Look at me. I look nearly pretty. Do you think Severus will like it?”
Minerva leaned in to speak into her ear.
“Sky you always look pretty. Tonight you look beautiful. And yes, I think Severus will love it. Just as he loves you.”
Sky didn’t know what to say. Severus told her over and over that she was beautiful but she never believed him. Not deep down. But Professor McGonagall just told her the same thing so maybe she didn’t look so bad. All she knew was she loved how she looked now.
“Do you really think so? That he’ll like it I mean.”
“Trust me Sky. I have known Severus Snape since he was eleven years old. Knock kneed, skinny and shy. There is not much that I do not know about him. He will like it.”
The Professor turned to Madam Malkin. We’ll take it. It’s perfect.”
The two women left her and walked into the shop as Sky stood and stared at herself in the mirror. She was mesmerised with her reflection. But then she realised that she would have to change before they went back and reluctantly went into the cubicle to put her own clothes back on.
At the front of the shop Minerva was paying for the gown and Madam Malkin was trying to pry information about the groom and when and where the wedding was going to be held. Minerva was bound by oath not to tell her and was practically biting her tongue to keep it in check.
“I am sorry Minny. I am bound by oath not to reveal anything.”
The shopkeeper sighed. She knew she wouldn’t get to find out anything if an oath was involved. “Well promise to let me know how it went once your oath stops being in effect.”
“I will don’t worry.”
Sky and Minerva waited while Madam Malkin wrapped everything up carefully and reduced the packages. They said thank you and goodbye and Sky opened the door for them to walk back into Severus’ study. Minerva took the packages into the bedroom, unwrapped them and hung up the robe and cape. She removed the clasp from Sky’s hair and placed it on the dressing table.
“Well I don’t know about you but I am hungry.”
“Me too. My stomach was rumbling in there. Let’s go.”
Sky headed for the door to the dungeon corridor but Minerva grabbed her and pulled her back. “Oh no you don’t. You cannot go to the Great Hall. We shall eat here.”
“But why? What’s wrong with the hall?”
“Nothing, except Severus will probably be in there eating his dinner and looking out for your arrival. No. You are stuck in here for the duration I’m afraid.”
Sky threw herself into a chair, pouting about being trapped in these rooms for the next four and a half hours.
Severus was not faring much better. He was stuck with Albus until midnight and the old coot would not let Severus out of his sight. He did not believe that the Potions Master would not try to sneak down to the dungeons to see Sky. Albus was right too. Severus was desperate to get to his rooms and see her.
He was hoping she would show her face at dinner, but instead he had to sit and listen to Albus prattling on about his own various weddings over the one hundred and so years he had lived. Add to that everything was spoken in whispers made Severus want to explode. He also had a headache coming on. By the time dinner was over and he and the Headmaster were back up in Albus’ tower, Severus was getting nervous.
‘Was he really getting married? Him, a confirmed bachelor? A man who swore he would never be tied down to one woman. And now he only had three hours left before the shackles were put on him for life. Merlin what had he done? There again there would be advantages. As his wife, Sky could not refuse him whenever he was horny. He would even be able to nip through to their rooms for a quickie between lessons if he was feeling particularly stressed. But Sky could be insatiable at times. What if he could not keep up with her? What if he could not satisfy her? Of course he could satisfy her. He’d done fine so far and she had not complained. Plus he now had a good supply of stamina potion. Extra strength. Just in case.’
Sky and Minerva had a light supper. Both were hungry but both felt like their stomachs were in knots. Effy arrived and Sky told her what was happening.
“Effy already knows. The Shannon is telling us elves. But she is telling me first cos I is bound to you. Soon I is bound to the Snape too.”
“Effy will you be there with me? I’d feel better if you were there.”
The elf clasped her hands together in glee. “Effy would be proud to attend Sky and the Snapes wedding. The Founders is being there too. Effy is telling them and they say they is coming to watch you be bound to yous new husband.”
“Really? They’re going to be there. Effy that’s wonderful. But how?”
“Don’t you be worrying about that. The elf’s is putting a big frame in the Headmasters’ office so they can use it.”
“Excuse me Sky. But did I hear correctly? The Founders?”
“Yeah. Sal, Rowena, Helga and Godric. They’ve been looking after me since I … well since …you know. They’re my family.”
Minerva almost fell into her seat with shock. Albus did not tell her about this. She did not even know where the girl had been staying for the time she was gone.
“Sky. How did you meet the Founders? Has it got something to do with the way you move from one place to another through the doors?”
“I lived in the wall. That’s where the Founders live. And yes. It’s got something to do with me getting about. I can go anywhere I want so long as it’s to or from the wall or Hogwarts. Sal and Rowena said I can go anywhere I want in the castle, that nowhere is off limits to me. Of course I don’t. It wouldn’t be fair just turning up in people’s rooms and classrooms. So I just stick to where I should be.”
“And Albus knew all of this?”
“Yeah. He spent the night in my house talking with the Founders. I’m surprised he didn’t tell you. Godric said that you and the headmaster are very close.”
“Godric Gryffindor? He said that?”
“Erm Yeah. Why, shouldn’t he have done? I’m sorry if I’ve said something I shouldn’t have.”
“No, no of course not. Though I would appreciate it if you kept that little piece of information to yourself.”
“Don’t worry. I’m not gonna tell anyone. It’s not my business.”
They sat and chatted for another hour then Effy told her to come and get in the bath. Severus was on his third shower. Partly for something to do, partly to calm his nerves and partly to get away from Albus’ incessant chatter.
At eleven thirty, Severus was sitting in his finest dress robes, black of course but made of the finest quality black velvet. His frock coat had green satin around the cuffs and down the front edges. The green was so dark it could be mistaken for black. His white shirt was the softest silk and his boots shone so much you could have seen your face in them.
He kept poking a finger inside his shirt collar and running it back and forth as if it was too tight, which of course it wasn’t.
When he’d first arrived in the Headmasters’ office, he realised he did not have a wedding ring and apparated to Diagon Alley, making directly for the jewellers, demanding that the man open late so he could purchase wedding rings. At the promise of a quick sale, the jeweller agreed to let him in. Now Severus had two platinum bands in his pocket, one for Sky and one for himself.
