“Oh, come on! It'll be fun!” Harry grinned as he tried to coax Kaliya under his shirt.
“Well, yes, it is something you do enjoy, Harry, I'm aware of that. However, I'm not at all enthralled with the idea of flying. If snakes were meant to go airborne, we would have wings,” Kaliya told him from where he was wrapped around the railing on the Quidditch pitch. “I don't believe this is something I would enjoy. Plus, my body temperature doesn't regulate like that of a human, so I would get chilled.”“That's why you slide under my shirt and wrap around me,” Harry explained, snickering. “You'll have my body heat to keep you warm. Just wrap around and hang on, everything will be fine. Then you can say that you went for a ride on a broom at some point. Just trust me! I'm not going to let anything happen to you.”“This is one adventure I'm not certain about, Harry. It's not that I don't trust you, it's more the idea of being airborne with no means of controlling what I do. I'm sure you understand that perspective,” the snake said, warily eying the broom his young man was holding.“Well, yeah, I do,” Harry admitted. “How about this—just try it. If, after a couple minutes, you don't like it, I'll bring you back down. Just a couple laps around the pitch before we start playing. Work for you?” Harry asked the snake, still grinning at him. “If I can put up with the idea of being bitten by a cobra tonight, you can handle a couple laps around the pitch. What do you say? Severus and Lucius, both, can attest to the fact I know what I’m doing and neither of us will get hurt.”“He does,” Lucius muttered unevenly, chuckling, rubbing his eyes. The mere idea of the snake flying with Harry was right riotous to even ponder.“I will second that,” Severus said, smirking, holding onto his own broom. “He flies like he was born on a broom and has been stuck to it since birth.”Looking at the two then back to Harry, Kaliya finally let out a hissy sigh. “I'll agree to this. However, none of those strange stunts I've seen you perform in the past. I don't wish to be hanging upside down in mid-air. No, that's not something I think I would handle well. A couple laps then drop me off back here and I'll just watch your game.”“Works for me!” Harry told him, grinning bigger. “Slide under my shirt and wrap around. Just not around the neck. If you tighten too much, I can't breathe then we'll end up going splat on the ground. That won't be fun.”“That wouldn't, I agree,” Kaliya mumbled, slithering under Harry's shirt and wrapping around his torso. Poking his head out the neck hole of the t-shirt, he said, “I would prefer not to be a smashed and flattened serpent. Just remember, no dangerous stunts. A couple laps and I wish to be dropped back off. Especially if the three of you plan to use those bat things to smack balls around. No, I don't want to chance getting hit.”Mounting his broom, Harry assured Kaliya, “No dangerous stunts, I promise. I'll even go slower than normal. Ready?” He asked, while preparing to kick off.“No, but I'll deal with it,” Kaliya grumbled, ensuring he was wrapped tightly around his young man.“Here we go!” Harry laughed, kicking off. Heading towards the far end of the pitch, going far slower than he normally did, Harry grinned. “There is nothing like this feeling in the whole world!”“I can agree there, Harry,” Kaliya said, tucking his head into the shirt. “And I'm not sure about these sensations.”“You'll get used to it!” Harry told him, zigzagging back and forth.Standing there watching Harry, Severus shook his head, snorting, “Only Harry could manage to talk a snake into a broom ride.”“Indeed,” Lucius said, entirely amused. Hefting the beater's bat he was holding, he looked down at it. “I have a feeling you and I are in for a trouncing we won't soon forget.”“We are,” Severus conceded, nodding, giving an amused snort. “He may be a Seeker, but he can hold his own in the other positions.” Lowering his voice, he added, “It'll be fun though, even for us. I haven't played since I was in school. The Quidditch kit was a good idea, Lucius.”“It will,” Lucius said, with a nod, smirking. This was Harry's big birthday present; a kit with Quaffles and Bludgers that were charmed to imitate having a full team. The Quaffle would act like it was being taken here and there then head down the pitch on the opposite end from your goal. The Bludgers acted like they had been hit by another team at you. The only compromise you had to make was to, sometimes, swat the Bludger away. He and Severus were going to team up against Harry for a game, something they all thought would be fun. Of all the things they had gotten the young man, this was the one he was most excited about, something Lucius understood. Even the lock-picking knife and a couple other trinkets from Black and Lupin hadn't inspired this kind of excitement. So, despite the fact that they were in for a trouncing, they were looking forward to playing.
Sitting cross-legged at the kitchen table long after dark, sipping a Coke, Harry was glancing through one of the books Sirius gave him on Animagus transformations. It was interesting and he thought it might be something he could try. Severus and Lucius, both, thought it would be a good idea and even said they may attempt it with him. That would be interesting. Looking at the two, he snickered then said, while flipping through the pages, looking at various illustrations, “Thanks for the game. I had a great time.”
“I think I can safely speak for Severus when I say we did as well, despite being soundly beaten. I'm glad you enjoyed it, Harry,” Lucius told him with a smirk and a nod.“My only grouse here is that you were not in my house at school. You could have played any position well, though you are masterful as a Seeker,” Severus told him, sipping his wine and leaning back.Snickering, Harry shut the book and tossed it on the table. Leaning back, stroking Kaliya's head while the snake rested in his lap, he said, “And if I hadn't all but begged the Sorting Hat not to put me in Slytherin, you would have gotten me.”Eyebrow arched, Severus asked, “Really?”“That's where it wanted to put me,” Harry nodded then ran him through the whole bit. “Honestly? With all the crap going on, that would have been a really bad idea. Especially the last year or so.” Snorting, he shook his head, “Looking back, I can get why. I mean, between Dumbledore, his crap and the Dursleys, I had to be sneaky about a lot of things to even survive.”“Very true,” Lucius nodded, leaning back in his chair and crossing his legs. “That does factor in. The Hat is a strange thing, that's for certain.”Glancing at the clock, Harry sighed. They had about an hour to go before doing the bonding. He was uptight about this, no doubt there. The only part that bothered him at all was the being bitten. The rest he trusted Kaliya to do. “How fast are we going to know if this bond works? Any idea?”“Almost immediately,” Kaliya told him, rising up slightly. “I think, if I perform it right, within minutes the marks will be gone. I’ll walk you through how to explain understanding Parseltongue to Lucius and Severus. That, too, should be quite fast. After that, you can work on the shields, as you call them, with Severus. The theory for picking that ability up should be the same as well. It'll just be a matter of practicing to get it down, nothing more.”After translating that, Harry nodded, “Works for me. You have what to do down pat, right?” He asked the snake, looking down at him.“I do,” Kaliya told him firmly. “It's quite simple so there is no need to fret over it.”Taking in what was said, Severus nodded. “I believe we're all as ready as we'll ever be. When we're done, you do have to message your godfather, Harry. He wants to ensure everything went according to plan. Plus, he will pass along any information he may have learned about what went on today. There probably isn't anything, but it's best to check because of the milestone.”“Will do,” Harry told him with a firm nod. Looking at the other two at the table, he asked, “There isn't supposed to be any overt strangeness that comes with this, is there?”“Nothing that we can find, Harry,” Lucius told him with a shake of his head. “That doesn't mean there may not be some, but we can't find anything aside from what we've all discussed. We're just going to have to be on the lookout for strange signs, nothing more.”“Alright,” Harry sighed, nodding. “Just leery here, I'm sure you understand why.”“We are all trepidatious,” Severus admitted. “It's the best option we have for some of this so we feel it's one we have to take. Plus, some of what can come will be things we need. The Parseltongue alone, at this juncture, is going to be a pressing matter to handle the Horcrux issue. So, it's a chance we need to take, despite what may happen. Whatever comes, we'll handle it.”Nodding, still real leery of this, Harry stroked Kaliya's head then looked down at the snake. Grinning, he asked, “You sure you don't want to go on another flight with me?”“Ah, no, Harry. I can say I did that once and don't want to partake again. Absolutely not,” Kaliya told him, slithering up the young man and draping over his shoulders. “I do see the attraction to someone like you when it comes to flight, but I prefer my mode of transportation better. Snakes don't have wings and should not be airborne. I'll content myself to watching from the sidelines.”Snickering, Harry grinned. “Well, you have to admit it was a little fun.”“Mayhaps, a little. The wind though, no. I didn't like the feel of that or how, since I had to stay inside your shirt, that I couldn't see what was going on. I will content myself to stay on the ground and watch.”
“Well, maybe we could find a spell to give you wings. Then you could flutter about,” Harry chuckled.“Ah, no, no thank you. The thought is appreciated, but I am not a winged serpent. I believe I rather like staying on the ground and not flying,” Kaliya told him, amused, as he knew his young man was joking.Having been listening in, Severus snorted, then said, “Just don't mention the whole wings proposal to Black. He's deranged enough that he’ll make it his mission in life to find such a spell. Kaliya would never hear the end of it then.”“True!” Harry laughed, stroking Kaliya's head.
Seated around the low table in the library Harry used to work on various projects, the three of them had their hands clasped on the table with Kaliya wrapped around them, intertwined with their arms in some ritualistic pattern. Head over their clasped hands, the snake was just waiting for the signal to begin.
Rubbing his eyes with his free hand, the one the scar wasn't on as Kaliya was going to get rid of that shortly, Harry then glanced at the clock. There was about a minute to go. Sighing, he shook his head then said, “I'm shutting my eyes now. It's already unnerving.”“I don't blame you a bit, Harry,” Lucius told the young man. “It's anxiety producing, the waiting. We don't have long to go.”“It should be fairly painless,” Severus told them both, looking at the snake that was wrapped around them. “We'll feel something, just not much.”Shutting his eyes, Harry said, “Yeah, I get that. It's just the idea here. Kaliya won't hurt us, I know that, but still. Bitten by a snake is bitten by a snake.” Feeling Kaliya start to move, Harry tensed up and waited, heart hammering in his chest. When he heard the hissy chatting begin, he let out a shuddering breath and waited. He would be first in order to make the bond as strong as they could get it. He—well, honestly, he didn't want to know what happened.
After what seemed like forever to him, Harry felt something like pressure on his hand and shivered, wondering what it was, though refusing to open his eyes to find out. Hearing Kaliya continue to chant, he felt the snake move then, after a few more moments, something wet drip down over their hands. He assumed that the bite was done, but refused to open his eyes. When the hissy chanting stopped, he felt a wet splash on his arm where the mark was. It grew warm and tingled, but that was all. Figuring it was now safe, he opened his eyes and looked down just as Kaliya was slithering off of them. Flexing his hand, his eyes widened at what looked like a tattoo on his arm. It was a black and gold cobra with open jaws that seemed to writhe slightly.Looking at his inner arm and seeing that scar gone, he grinned then said, “I think it really worked!”“It did,” Kaliya confirmed, slithering into his lap and examining the marking more closely. “The bond mark tells me it took. It's very clear too, meaning it's a strong one. Yes, this is good.”Looking down at his own forearm, the one that didn't have the Dark Mark, Severus examined his own bond mark, nodding, pleased. “This is good. And there was no pain at all.”“None,” Lucius said, stroking the mark on his own arm, smirking when he turned the other over and saw, for the first time in years, a pale, unmarked inner arm. The mark of the maniac was gone forever. That pleased him.“Wicked mark too,” Harry told the snake with a grin, flexing his arm, something that seemed to make the snake move.“That is a very pleasing one, yes,” Kaliya said, watching what his young man was doing.“You're going to be able to get rid of Severus' later, aren't you?” Harry asked, looking over at the others marks. They appeared to be identical to his own.“Oh yes, quite easily,” Kaliya assured him. “The only reason it remains is I'm allowing it to. When he decides it's time for him to leave the fold, I'll eliminate it.”Pleased with that, Severus nodded. Looking at the snake, he reached over and stroked his head then said, “You did very well. This is good. Now, about the Parseltongue—let's start with that. As you said it's the easier to learn and is probably the most pressing right now, let's figure out how to do that.”“It's quite simple,” Kaliya said, rising up more, hissing contentedly at what Severus was doing. “Harry will speak to me in my language. Concentrate on his voice and the way he speaks. You'll feel a slight tingle in the bond mark. In a few minutes, you'll understand what he's saying. The more you hear it, the easier it's going to be to speak it. Within days, it'll be second nature and it will be as if you were born with the gift.”After translating that, Harry switched to Parseltongue and began to talk to Kaliya. “Anything we should watch for? Like strange signs?”“None that I know of, Harry,” the snake told him, examining the bond mark more closely. “If something odd does appear, let me know and we'll see what we can determine. It shouldn't, however. Severus, of course, will need to hide the bond mark so as not to give it away to anyone. He said he has some kind of spell to do that.”Listening to the hissing, trying to focus on Harry's voice, Lucius was examining the pale inner arm that used to have that garish mark on it when, slowly, he began to realize he could understand some words. Head coming up, he looked at the two then to Severus, whose eyes were wider than normal. Smirking, he said, “It's working.”“It is,” Severus said, looking pleased. For the first time, he could understand what Harry had said about Kaliya's accent. The snake had one different than theirs and it was strange when combined with the hissy touch, but it was wonderful to be able to understand the snake after all this time.Chortling, Kaliya said, “Yes, this is good! I didn't assume it would take long. Oh, this is pleasing!”Focusing on the talking, Lucius found the more that was said, the more he understood. “This is wonderful! Just how it was described.” Reaching out, he stroked Kaliya's head. “It is a pleasure to finally be able to understand you, Kaliya!”“Oh, he is so good at that,” Kaliya hissed contentedly, tail twitching. “Yes, this is pleasing! I like it. Within days we'll be having complete conversations without having to have them translated. I do like this.”“Indeed,” Severus said, nodding, reaching out to stroke the snakes head himself. “Let's get this down to a science then we'll work on the shields. If we can pick this up as simply as we have, that shouldn't be a struggle either.”“No, the theory is the same,” Kaliya told him. “It may take more as it's not an audial skill, but it shouldn't be too tough to manage.”“A celebration is in order. For once, something worked out as planned.” Summoning the elves to bring a bottle of champagne, he said, “We'll share a bottle and bring water for Kaliya. What do you want as a treat tonight, Kaliya? You've earned whatever you fancy.”Thinking that over intently, the snake said, “I do believe, mayhaps, something in the beef family tonight. Yes, that sounds good. Good for the blood.”
“Beef it is,” Lucius said, smirking.
Holding up his arm so Remus and Sirius could see the bond mark in the mirror, Harry chuckled, looking at it, “It's wicked! Better than any tattoo I've ever seen.”
After having his godson move his arm closer so they could get a better look Sirius nodded, “It is! That's great.” Lowering his voice, he said, “It all worked then? No glitches.”“Went fine,” Harry told him firmly, nodding. “It didn't even hurt. All we felt was some pressure. Severus and Lucius can already understand Kaliya perfectly. They can't speak fluently yet, but can do a couple simple words. Lucius mark is gone with no sign it was ever there. Just what we needed.” Looking down at his own forearm where the scar had been, he said, “Mines gone as well. Perfect.”
“Good,” Sirius said with a relieved sigh. “We'll get a closer look at it when we come over in a couple days.” Leaning back, he asked, “How was your birthday?”“It was great! And I'm supposed to tell you to grab brooms when you come so we can play a game.” Harry told him, grinning. Quickly, he told them about the present he had gotten from the two and the game they had. “It was a lot of fun and is something I can do on my own if I'm bored. We've decided it'll be us three against them.”“They can expect to get their butts kicked again then,” Sirius laughed. “That'll be good, though, a lot of fun. I haven't heard of anything like that kit before, but they did good with that.”Reaching down to stroke Kaliya down his back as the snake lounged over him, Harry then reached up to rub his shoulder. It ached a little. He assumed that was from swatting the Bludger around and being so tense earlier. Shaking his head, he snickered, “Not used to being a Beater. That's definitely harder work than being a Seeker!”“It is, that's for sure. You end up stiff and a little sore when you start out doing it. I ached for days after the first few practices. I liked it though. It was fun smacking the Bludgers at the opposing team,” Sirius told him with a grin. “I promise not to try to knock Lucius and Severus off their brooms this time.”“Oh, I think they can hold their own there,” Harry laughed, shaking his head. “Both were doing a good job against me with that. Especially Severus. Lucius—I think his was more self preservation than anything. He was good with the Quaffle though.”“We're a bit out of practice doing it, but we should be able to rise to the occasion,” Remus told him with a smile. “And it'll be fun. I've not played since I was in school. We'll make sure to give a good showing.”
