Lyra’s heart beat wildly out of time as she skidded to a halt deep in the Department of Mysteries, her eyes darting frantically from side to side for any sign of Sirius. The Entrance Chamber spun around her, rapidly disorientating her as she cursed under her breath and pulled out her wand to test the air around her, but just as she swept it in a wide arc above her head a door to the right burst open.
“Lyra!” His voice hoarse, Sirius hurtled towards her with Lupin, Tonks, Kingsley Shacklebolt and Alastor Moody at his head. “What are you doing here?!”
Lyra launched herself into his waiting arms, burying her face in his chest and barely suppressing a low sob, the relief at seeing him unharmed almost too much to bear. “Molly showed up, she’s got Leo – and I couldn’t stay there, not when I can help!”
His eyes blazed with fierce pride and approval. “Damn right you can. You’re the best witch I’ve ever known, my beautiful little wife. Come on, then. Let’s find Harry.”
She wanted nothing more than to hold onto her husband until the end of time itself, but as always the world had other ideas. Her wand hand shook as she stepped back, but she forced her face to harden as Moody stomped up to their side.
“So what do we try now?” he said, his frustration plain to see on his lined face. “This damned Department drives me crazy, never could understand it. If anyone’s got any bright ideas which door to go through -”
But as he spoke, a loud bang echoed around the round chamber as a heavy weight slammed into the other side of the door directly in front of them. The Order did not even need to speak. As one they raised their wands and launched through the air, then passed through the door before returning to corporeal form in the midst of the Death Chamber.
Harry was there – and he was not alone.
Two of the Weasley children, Hermione Granger and two other children were being restrained around the perimeter of the room by numerous masked Death Eaters, and stood high on the central dais Harry himself was facing down an unmasked Death Eater that Lyra knew all too well.
Months had passed since she saw him last, but when Lyra looked up at the distinctive face that haunted her dreams, she stumbled and failed to choke back a low cry. At her side Sirius’s face darkened and her stomach lurched, but when Lucius glanced down at them and his eyes widened, Sirius took instant advantage of the Death Eater’s distraction to spring forward and seize hold of Harry no more than a heartbeat before he could unwillingly hand the prophecy over.
In an instant chaos exploded around them, with Sirius and Harry the eye of the storm. Trusting desperately that together they could take care of anything and everything that came their way, Lyra rolled sideways to evade a vicious blast from the wand of another Death Eater behind her – and to her horror found herself at the feet of Lucius himself.
“Well, well,” he said, his voice as soft as silk as he held his wand down to press against the curve of her throat. “Though I hoped my colleagues and I would make good our escape here without seeing any of the Order, I cannot deny that seeing you here is a more than adequate compensation for the trouble. Lyra, it has been far too long since I last held you in my arms!”
To her consternation, despite the battle now raging around them he only had eyes for her. Swallowing hard as the cold tip of his wand stroked against her skin, she tried with all her might to ignore the fire now raging inside her as she tightened her hand around her own wand. “Back off, Malfoy,” she said under her breath, afraid to speak too loud for fear of distracting Sirius from the imperative task of protecting Harry and the prophecy.
Lucius lifted one slender brow. “Oh, I think not. Indeed, I intend to take you with me tonight.”
“I won’t come quietly, Malfoy!”
“Oh, I fully hope and anticipate you will not, pet.”
Her unintended double entendre hung in the air between them, and out of nowhere her pulse leapt so wildly she could barely even catch her breath. Terrified now of her own compulsion to surrender everything she was into his hands, she pulled her wand on him, but someone else struck before she could.
“Depulso!”
Lucius’s top lip curled back and he lurched sideways as Lupin’s bolt of white shot towards him, and with a low sob Lyra seized her chance. Leaping to her feet she followed up Lupin’s spell with another of her own, and it skimmed the top of Lucius’s hair as he angrily shook it out of his face and assumed a duelling stance.
“Very well, pet,” he ground out, all trace of charm and amusement gone from his voice, for now it was barely more than a snarl. “As always with you, we shall do this the hard way – but remember that every time you defy me, you drive my temper further out of control, and my temper and my lust for you run hand in hand. When I wrest you into my bed tonight, Lyra, there will be no tenderness!”
She did not need to be a Legilimens to know what was on his mind. If she lost this duel, she would lose everything. Forcing herself to think only of Sirius and Leo for fear of what her body would do of its own accord should she think of Lucius’s victory, she began to fire upon him without mercy.
As Lyra had known would be the case, Lucius was a viciously skilled dueller. He held nothing back, the only concession being that his spells and jinxes were restricted to those that would cause her no permanent damage. She had to be at her very best just to keep him at bay, but the toll of the broken nights caring for Leo was beginning to show. She faltered, and triumph burned in his pale eyes as he began to advance on her, closing the distance between them
As she darted backwards, twisting to evade every spell Lucius furiously fired at her, she stumbled into the waiting arms of her husband with a cry of relief. Sirius cast a gleaming Shield charm to deflect another red bolt of light from Lucius’s wand before delivering a fierce kiss to her lips and spinning on his heel. “I love you,” he mouthed, his eyes bright with emotion and a vivacity that she had rarely seen there before.
“I love you too!” With that, Lyra threw herself sideways before leaping back up as Tonks collapsed to the floor and her target, Bellatrix, turned her wand on Sirius instead. Out of the corner of her eye she saw Lupin shepherding Harry and Neville away from the chaos, shielding them with his body from any stray curses that might fly their way, but there was no time even to revel in that tiny victory.
Red spots of fury colouring his pale face, Lucius slashed his wand through the air and caught her with a jinx that brought her to her knees. With so much going on around them no one seemed to have seen her plight, and before she even had the chance to catch her breath he followed up the jinx by wordlessly sending her wand spinning through the air to clatter harmlessly to the polished stone floor.
Lyra swallowed hard, painfully aware now that she was out of options. His cold smile widened, and he drew closer still as he leaned in towards her. “And now I finally have you at my mercy, Lyra,” he breathed. “Impe- “
But before he could finish the Unforgivable Curse that would see her fall slave to his will, a soft ripple in the air around them heralded an abrupt hush that fell across the Death Chamber. Lucius paled again as they both twisted to the side to see the majestic sight of Albus Dumbledore at the bottom of the dais, his cloak billowing around his wizened body and his knarled wand outstretched as the Death Eaters still battling the Order began to slowly back away.
Only one pair of combatants had not noticed Dumbledore’s arrival. Sirius and his cousin were still duelling on the opposite side of the dais. Sirius had the upper hand as he leapt backwards up each stone step, raining down blows upon Bellatrix in ignorance of all that was behind him.
Lyra froze as the fluttering veil mere inches from her husband’s back transfixed her, making impossible to even cry out and warn him. He seemed more alive than ever before, but as he laughed out loud Bellatrix fired beneath his outstretched arm, her aim true.
The bolt struck Sirius square in the chest, sending him soaring into the waiting embrace of the veil.
