August had been unbearably hot and half the time Hermione wanted to kill the sun for existing. She felt like she was on fire and her temper was short at best the only thing that she could think about was that she had had the best baby shower ever. Severus had planned it wonderfully, Narcissa had allowed him to use the manor even though they were spending the summer at the beach before their twins came along. Hermione looked around her new home and smiled brightly at her surroundings and thought back to June when she had last seen Lucius.

“Hermione” Lucius said “Narcissa and I are heading to our beach house for our last summer alone together before the twins come along. We won’t be here for your baby-shower though we know that Severus is making it wonderful”

“I hope so” Hermione smiled “Hope there’s lots of food…I’m always hungry”

“This is my gift to you” He handed her a small box “And this” He moved aside to show her something that was completely covered by a sheet “Is Narcissa’s present to you”

“What are they?” She asked, hoping she wouldn’t have to wait a month to open them.

“Open them” He demanded, he watched her open the little box that held a key “I bought SummerRose Manor last year for us, but I’m giving it to you and Severus for your family. It’s in the same town as your University and he can travel to and from Hogwarts by Floo, it’s all been okayed by Minerva”

“Oh, Lucius!” She sobbed “This is too much...I could never accept it”

“I own many houses” He informed “I won’t use that one and you two can. I’ve been to Spinners End its depressing at best and not a good place to raise a child…it could turn out like Severus, ew!”

“He’s perfect” Hermione laughed.

He watched her open the next present which was only hidden by a sheet and it turned out to be a bassinet that was filled to the point of over flowing with toys, clothes, diapers and bottles. Hermione had sobbed for nearly an hour after she saw that but she was happy and Severus was happy to carry it back to their new home which they worked to make it fit their personalities. They only fought for a little while about what room should be the baby’s room and then they fought over the library, the study and then they fought over the bedroom but this time Hermione didn’t runaway and cry she stood there and they talked it out, like adults…like the husband and wife they were made on June fifth.

She was finally nine months along and that was nice because she knew that soon her son would be with her. She had also gotten permission to take her courses home with her and only have to come in on Mondays to return her work. Needless to say she was very happy with that but found the thought of being a mother was scaring the hell out of her, she had spoken with the other women about it and the best they could tell her was the it was a learn as you go sort of thing, something she never enjoyed.

She was starting to feel bad for Severus because her once existing “fuck me anytime, anywhere and in numerous positions” attitude had given way to a “Touch me and I’ll castrate you” attitude. He had told her that he had fought a war against evil, faced and double-crossed the Dark Lord Voldemort and nearly died and yet he was still more terrified of his pregnant wife than any of that. She tried to find that amusing because that was what he had been going for but she ended up in tears and lying on her bed with Severus trying like hell to backtrack on everything that he said. He was trying and failing to make her better but he only seemed to make things worse, his only help was the fact that Remus was helping him understand that in the last month or few months they could get pretty antsy.

“I was thinking” Severus said on the morning of the first of September “I’m going to hand over the…er…business to Luna and only help on the side. Is that okay with you?”

“Of course” She answered “Severus, I’m nine months pregnant today”

“I know” He smiled “And I’ve got to go to Hogwarts in a few hours” He kissed her neck and smirked when she pushed him away “I’ll be home probably around...Ten”

“Why so late” She pouted.

“The Welcome Back Feast” He informed “Ends at eight as usual and then there is going to be a meeting a half an hour later and you know how Dumbledore can talk”

“I’ve got some good news” He told her “It appears that Tonks and Remus seem to like you a little bit and have decided to buy a small house that’s about three miles away. I have a feeling that Tonks will be spending most of her time with you tonight”

“That’s good” Hermione smiled “As my due date gets closer I find I worry more and more about going in to labor when you’re gone”

“Don’t worry” He kissed her temple “I won’t let anything happen to you, my love”

Severus spent a good amount of his time at Hogwarts while Hermione spent her time reading, studying and working on assignments. When she wasn’t studying and talking to either Tonks or Narcissa, she was talking to her belly, reading or singing to the baby. She and Severus debated every night about possible names for their son and had yet to really pick one out. She knew that she wanted the name Bryce to be in there some way but Severus said that with that name she should tack on Malfoy and he could be a stuck up little bastard. He wanted the name Steven but Hermione hated it and refused to allow her baby to be called Steven.

“You know” Narcissa said rubbing her huge belly “Steven isn’t a bad name”

“I hate it” Hermione said “Why can’t it be something…good”

“Are there any names in your family that you love and could use?” Tonks asked “That’s how Teddy got his name”

“My father’s name was Tristan Granger” Hermione answered “I always thought it was a beautiful name, but Severus will think it’s too feminine”

“Remus wanted to name Teddy” Tonks said “Jamison”

“That’s not bad” Hermione said.

“He wanted to basically name my kid after James Potter” Tonks said “Sorry…but no”

“Okay” Hermione said.

“I told him that I wanted to name him after my father, Ted” Tonks said “He didn’t fight with me, I gave Teddy his name for the middle name and it worked out nicely”

“Nice” Hermione said thinking about what she would say to her husband when he got home from work “What have you decided for your baby’s name?”

“Mona Orianna Lupin” Tonks answered “Mona means “Noble” and Orianna means “Golden” sounds pretty good to me”

“Sounds like your baking the perfect Gryffindor” Narcissa snorted.

“And what will your kids names be?” Hermione asked.

“We’re having a boy and a girl” Narcissa told them “The girl will be Dahlia Lotus Malfoy and our second son will be Elijah Henry Malfoy”

“Sounds like your brewing snobby Slytherins” Tonks said.

“I am” She laughed “So, Hermione how many more days until you pop” She smiled as Hermione made a strained face and rubbed her belly.

“What’s the date now?” Hermione asked.

“The seventh of September” Narcissa smirked.

“Eight more days” Was the answer “Though he is active today”

“This is just the start of it” Tonks laughed.

Hermione was standing in the bedroom watching Severus shower through the bathroom mirror that night. He really was beautiful, she just hoped and prayed that she would be able to go back to normal after the baby came and she was just thinking that maybe, once the baby was here and she was healed and thin she should wear something sexy and rock his world, she thought that after the last two and a half sexless months he may appreciate the effort. She frowned a little as she felt a strange sharp pain in her belly and put her hand on it, then there was more pain in her sides and back. She took a deep breath and started to walk to the bathroom having to stop many times to catch her breath, she was just entering the bathroom when her water broke.

“S-Severus” She moaned “S-Severus…” She made to grab the wall but missed and hit the shower curtain falling in to the shower with a surprised and instantly worried Severus.

“Baby” He dropped and picked her up looking her over “What’s wrong…what’s happening?!”

“I’m in labor…but…I don’t know” She let out a high pitched squeal and then moaned “There’s something wrong”

“Come on” He picked her up, waving his hand they were both dry and he was dressed. He ran out the door and apperated them to the school and took off running to the Hospital Wing.

Severus wasn’t allowed in to the hospital wing with her, Poppy took her in and a few minutes later two Healers from Saint Mungos went in but no one would tell him what was going on. Tonks and Remus showed up with Minerva and shortly after that Narcissa and Lucius showed up. The minutes rolled by and then an hour, there was a silencing charm in place because he couldn’t hear anything but then again he wasn’t sure if he could or would want to hear anything that was happening in that room.

“Poppy” He said as she came out “What’s going on?”

“The baby was in distress” She answered “He’s okay…”

“Hermione?” He asked.

“She’s f…” She started but the door opened again and one of the Healers whispered to the Medi-witch “I’ve got to go back in”

“What’s wrong?!” He demanded.

“Look Severus” The older woman looked at him with tears in her eyes “The baby didn’t fully turn like he was supposed to, it was an extremely difficult labor and she’s…she’s hemorrhaging really badly” She shook her head “She’s passed out”

“But…” He started.

“I’ve got to get back in there” She walked back in quickly.

Severus stood still looking at the double doors that held the hospital wing but didn’t see anything at all. The past year was passing in front of his eyes but then again so wasn’t the past and he knew that even if his son lived, if he lost Hermione his own life would be over. There would be no-way he could look at that baby and not see his wife in his features. With his hands shaking he turned to look at the people that had rallied around to stand with him, to support him when he needed it the most. His childhood friend and protector Lucius with his radiant wife trying hard not to cry, Tonks a woman he hadn’t ever attempted to know until this year and a man that he had spent so many years hating and fearing at the same time, Remus Lupin. Then there was Minerva McGonagall a woman that had been like a mother to him for years and someone that made sure he was okay when others didn’t care. He looked for strength and support but all he saw was his fear mirrored back at him and he knew that they were just as afraid as he was because Hermione had touched their lives just as much as his and they all loved her.

“Severus” Poppy’s soft voice pulled him back to looking at the door that housed the hospital wing and he looked in to her pale, weeping face and felt his heart start to speed up.

“Hermione…” He whispered brokenly "Please...don't leave me"

A/N: Hope you liked this chapter…wait…where did I leave off? Oh My! Is that an evil spot to end the chapter? I really should stop doing evil things now shouldn’t I?

Next chapter may be a sad one.
