Chapter 28:
A Song in the Key of Freaked Out Harry
“Coming up with anything at all?” Sirius asked after taking a seat at the kitchen table. Looking between Remus and Snape, he was hopeful. Because, at this point, they needed something and were on a strict timeline to find it.
“Not so far, no,” Remus sighed with a shake of his head.“We think we've narrowed down the ingredients that are causing the issue,” Snape grumbled, running his fingers through his hair. “It's the Jarvey hair, for certain. That we know. The issue comes in with not only the eye of newt, but the toad warts he used to 'tweak' it. What we're trying to find is an antidote that works for both of those, neutralizing the effects of the Jarvey hair. And that's not as easy as it sounds. There is a reason Jarvey hair isn't used in much. It's so volatile and chaotic when it comes to potions that it sets off all kinds of reactions you can't calculate. So, it's not a very common ingredient, thus making it harder to neutralize.”Groaning, Sirius shook his head, shoulders slumping. “We need to find something, fast.”“Is the spell to keep Draco away working?” Remus asked, concerned.“Just fine,” Sirius confirmed with a nod. “He's staying exactly five feet away and can't come any closer than that. The problem comes in that he is doing just that; staying exactly five feet away, but following Harry everywhere he goes, whining softly the whole time. He's even camped outside our door when we're in there.”“That's not good,” Remus breathed, shoulders slumping.“Which means the pull is growing worse and we have to find something, now,” Severus groaned, glancing over all the books that were scattered across the table. Though he desperately wanted to be in his 'happy place', he couldn't go there. If he did, he wouldn’t be able to focus. And focus was needed to deal with this latest nightmare.“You do, because that's not the only effect it's having,” Sirius told them softly. Before they could ask, he pressed on, “The bond. For the first time since this nightmare started, it's triggering it. For both Lucius and myself. The impulse to use spells on Draco is almost overwhelming. We think that's due to Harry being completely freaked out by all of it. If he stays calm and in our room, where he knows that Draco can't get in, we're fine. The minute he encounters Draco and the behavior starts, it starts pulling at us to 'protect' him. Lucius admitted he's having the same problem.”“That we don't need,” Remus said softly, eyes overly wide.Rubbing his chin, Severus sighed, “We'll find something. Just give us some time. For now, try to come up with something to keep them apart that doesn't involve spells. We don't need him setting both of you off.”“We're trying,” Sirius told him with a heavy sigh. “Harry's staying right where he is in our room. In fact, he refuses to leave he's so unnerved by this. Lucius has Draco confined to his. Between the two of us, we've put up everything we can think of to keep Draco out. Kreacher did the same thing. So, he should be safe. Lucius is going to take Draco outside to keep him occupied most of the day. We hope that helps. It's just—I'm not forcing Harry to stay locked in our room. I know he feels safe there, but that would be enough to make anyone completely mental. And we're not sure what would happen if that starts.”“Something else not good that doesn't need added to an already horrid pile,” Remus groaned, eyes sliding shut and head dropping forward.“I know no one is going to react well to this suggestion but—if neither one of you can find something by tomorrow, we might have to either get Albus involved or take him to St. Mungos. Because if this grows worse, there's a huge explosion coming and I don't want to have Draco right in the middle of it,” Sirius admitted softly, looking between the two.Somber look on his face, Severus glanced at Lupin, who had his eyes shut, head dropped forward, then back to Black before sighing and nodding, “You're correct. Give us until tomorrow to see what we can manage. If we can't, I think Albus is the way to go. We can protect most of what's going on as the confessional streak is finished. I'm loathe to take him to St. Mungos because of what could come of that. I'm sure he's not a danger to Potter, but they might not perceive it that way. If they do, then the DMLE becomes involved. We don't need that.”“We don't,” Sirius admitted quietly. “We also have to add in that the minute we take that step, Cissy gets involved. That won't end well either. Lucius and Draco, both, are already panicked over her finding out, trying to come up with something to negate the reaction she'll have. I get that what she did in Albus' office was for show, but she's very capable of going off like that, and has. She is batty Bella's sister and some of those traits do carry over. I'm sure you know that, Snape. And if she goes after Lucius, we have no idea what she might unleash in me and Harry.”“More bad we didn't need,” Severus snarled, scrubbing a hand over his face. Black was right of course, that's for damned sure. Insanity had taken a stroll through the Black family tree and shook hands then French kissed each member personally. Some were more affected than others. Narcissa and Bella were strong in the batshite insane gene. Though he was loathe to admit it, Sirius was one of the saner members of that damned family, even after Azkaban. Narcissa was devious as well. She didn't put up with Lucius for as long as she had without having to employ that to keep him in line. With what Draco was like, he was sure she used similar tactics with her son, not to mention blaming Lucius, who rightfully shouldered most of it, as well. And, as a Black, she knew many hexes and curses that were enough to scare the ever loving shite out of anyone with an ounce of sanity. Her getting involved, or even learning about what happened, was a monumentally bad idea. “Just give us the rest of the day. If we can't come up with something, we'll contact Albus.”“Let me know if you find anything,” Sirius said, shaking his head. “I'm going back up to camp out with Harry and try to keep him calm. That and find something to do so he doesn't go mental. If we have bigger issues, we'll send an elf.”“If we come up with anything, we'll do the same,” Remus told his old friend with a nod.Standing with a groan, Sirius headed towards their bedroom, hoping like hell this didn't get any worse than it already was.Looking determined, Severus delved back in, wondering if a trip to the Alley for more reference books wasn't in order. Because it was now imperative that they find something as quickly as possible. He was damned sure, with what he knew of Narcissa, that Lucius wasn't the only one eyebrow deep in a cauldron of hot water if she found out what happened. All the adults in the house might find themselves on the wrong end of her wand. And that wasn't something he wanted because she well and truly frightened him with some of what she could do. No! He would find something if it was the last thing he did!
Standing in the hallway right before the door to his room, Sirius had his face in his hand, groaning. Draco was there, curled up in a ball on the floor directly in front of the room, kinda' pawing at the door, whimpering softly. Oh yes, this wasn't good. The whimpering—that was getting on his nerves as it had some kind of keening sound to it that set his teeth on edge. Now, he got that the potion was causing this, he really did, and was reminding himself of it regularly, but he was about done because the insanity that romped through this house since the whole nightmare started was pushing him to his limit. This was just managing to make it go there it faster.
Lowering his hand after smoothing down his goatee, Sirius sighed then asked, tone weary, “What are you doing, Draco? And where is your father?”Whining softly, Draco looked at Sirius then whinged, “I want in. Harry is in there.”“You are not getting in,” Sirius told him, tone icy. “Where is your father?”Whining louder, Draco curled up tighter to the door and pawed at it harder. “I need Harry! You don't understand!”His heavily jangled last nerve about to snap, Sirius snarled, “Where. Is. Your. Father!”“He was checking on Harry,” Draco whimpered, shivering, that need to be around Harry growing as he knew his father was close to him. That was making it worse.Pointing his wand at Draco, Sirius levitated him away from the door then let himself in, making damned sure to shut it tightly and ward it. Leaning against it, he looked up at the ceiling and shook his head. Slumping, he glanced around. Harry was seated at the small table they put up, eating his breakfast. Lucius was standing in the doorway from his room and not being perverted for once, just asking how Harry was. Huffing, he imparted, “You might want to go grab your son, Lucius. He's curled up in front of this door, pawing at it.” With that, he pointed at the door he just came in through.Groaning, Lucius slumped and shook his head. “Please tell me Severus and Remus have come up with something to put an end to this madness!”“Nadda,” Sirius groused. He then ran Lucius through the plan they came up with. Seeing a slightly panicked look there, he shrugged, “Unless you can come up with a solution they can't, it's something we need to do. St. Mungos is out for a variety of reasons.”Not wanting Dumbledore anywhere near the situation, Lucius tried to think. That wasn't as easy as usual because panic was really starting to take over. The situation was a horrific one that he had no idea how to fix. Nothing he tried with his son was working, which meant extreme measures had to come into play. After a couple minutes, he said, “I'm going to send a message to the Dark Lord. He's—well, you know—but still brilliant. Between him and Severus, I'm sure they can come up with something. Because this has to end. Now.”“It does,” Sirius agreed with a nod. “If it doesn't, I'm going to end up losing my temper in a way I haven't in a very long time. Not to mention what is there with the bond is growing worse.”“I'll manage. Give me time,” Lucius told him, determined. “Let me get everything Severus has on this nightmare and send it off. We'll go from there. Then I'm taking Draco outside. I'm not sure if that will work, mind you, as he just keeps gravitating to wherever Harry is, but I'll try.”“Something needs done,” Sirius sighed though not sure what to suggest when it came to this mess. Seeing Lucius nod then stride out, a determined look on his face, Sirius walked over and flopped in a chair by Harry. “You doing alright?” He asked his godson, but was sure he knew the answer.“Other than being completely and utterly freaked out?” Harry chuckled in a sad way shaking his head. Sighing, he told Sirius, “I'm good other than the mess. Just—going slightly mental. I want to get out of the room, but am terrified of what might happen if I do and if Draco finds out I'm somewhere I'm not protected.”“Something completely understandable,” Sirius sighed. Groaning, he scrubbed both hands through his hair. “Let's see what happens with Draco going outside. If Lucius can keep him out there and he doesn't end up with that nightmare pulling him back this way, I say you and I get out of the house for a couple of hours. Just something simple like getting something to eat or mucking about somewhere. It can only help both of us.”“I'd like that,” Harry admitted. “It's just—I need a break of some kind, I really do. The insanity—what I've seen—bloody hell! I'll need years of therapy to get over this!”Snickering at that, Sirius shook his head. Leaning back in the chair and crossing his ankles, he said, “We'll find something, don't worry. Once you eat, we'll play a couple games or something to take our mind off the nightmare.”“Nothing's going to manage that, Sirius,” Harry sighed. Then he added, “We can try, though. Even shoving it aside for a while will help.”“That we can do,” Sirius nodded, completely understanding what Harry meant. “I'll keep you occupied and it'll be fun. Just try to relax the best you can.” He wasn't sure that he could completely manage it, but he would try. That and if there wasn't some kind of odd reaction from Draco, they were going out, all there was to it. He would do it in Muggle areas, but it would do both of them good to just get away alone together without the insanity following them.
Harry was actually having a really good time. He and Sirius were sitting at the table and his godfather was teaching him some new, and very interesting, spells. Nothing harmful, of course, and not only prank spells, but some complex charms as well that he could use later in life, such as for housekeeping. This was making the time fly and the stress from what was going on diminish. That was great. In fact, he hadn't even thought about Draco for almost an hour.
The window to the room was open and there was a nice breeze blowing in. Like with most magical houses, there was a spell up on it that kept the bugs out and diminished the noises. That was good too. He could hear Lucius and Draco mucking about outside, but it didn't bother him. Sirius also made sure that the view from the window was one way, meaning they could see out but no one could see in. That was probably needed to stop whatever was going on with Draco. Perfect!Shifting around, taking a sip of his drink, he was about to mention something about getting lunch as they were done with the last spell they had been working with when he felt the hair on the back of his neck stand up. Not certain what was causing it, and not sure he really wanted to know, Harry stiffened. Slowly, sure that whatever he was going to see would traumatize him, he turned his head to look out the window. That's when he let out a panicked 'gack' sounding noise. There, hovering outside the window, was a distraught and disheveled Draco. Then the whining started again.Out of his chair and sliding behind Sirius in his, he clung to his godfather the way a sloth did to a tree, shaking, eyes wide. Oh, bloody hell! This wasn't good! Not sure what was going on until he heard the whining, Sirius pointed his wand at the window almost before he looked in that direction. Face taking on a thunderous expression at what he saw, he snarled. This wasn't good. In the background, he could hear Lucius yelling for his son, which meant the perverted prat was trying. It also meant, that despite the spells on the window, Draco was being drawn to wherever Harry was. Plenty not good there. “You're fine, Harry, he can't get in,” Sirius told his whimpering godson, feeling him cling so tightly to him that it was getting hard to breathe. Then something new, and wholly unwelcome, started; Draco began to sing.Though he couldn't see in clearly there were shadows in the room shaped like people, which told Draco that Harry was in there. Then he heard Black's voice. That was all the confirmation he needed. Whining louder, that compulsion taking over, he went about what he was trying in a whole new way; singing. Now, Draco was good at many things in this world. In fact, he would tell you rather smugly that he was great at most of what he tried. That did not extend to singing. Singing—it was an embarrassment to all of them when he started, especially himself. His voice cracked, the pitch rising and falling, he couldn't get the right key, nothing. He accepted it long ago and made certain to train himself not to sing along with anything, even when alone when listening to the Wireless. This time, though, the impulse took over and he went with it, singing the mushiest love song he could come up with, one he heard from the girls in the dorm when they were smitten with someone. As he wasn't sure just what spells were on that room, he made sure to sing as loudly as he could. He hoped, doing this, despite how bad it was, would get the point across to Harry just what he felt for him, especially since he was so horrible at it.Wincing at the sound, listening to Harry moan almost in pain, Sirius wasn't sure what to do. He was damned sure that the prat couldn't actually see Harry because he wasn't attempting to get in, so he didn't want to confirm it for him. Instead, he did the only thing he could think of; shouting for Lucius while trying to blow Draco away from the window. As he was on a broom, he was able to conjure some wind and push him away. However, that had the effect of Draco just raising his voice and singing all the louder, then circling around and coming right back to where he had been. Yeah, not good there. That told him that even if he couldn't see Harry, only suspecting he was there, that the compulsion was going to pull him in that direction. Fuck!
The plan he had come up with had been working perfectly. Though Draco wasn't completely distracted from the obsession, he was focusing on smacking Bludgers around. That was good and Lucius was pleased. In fact, the two were having a great deal of fun and things almost seemed back to normal. That was until a Bludger he hit went too close to the house.
At first, Lucius waited while his son chased it. Nothing too off there, honestly. Draco caught up with it just before the barrier around the house would deflect it. Then he smacked it back his way, something Lucius zoomed off to catch up to. That's where it all ended. Turning to see where his son was to know where to smack the dratted thing, he groaned when he saw Draco hovering by Black's window. The shout of his name by Black was enough to tell him that whatever was going on wasn't good either. Shaking his head, he started to zoom in that direction to stave off whatever hell this would cause. Then the singing started.Eyes twitching madly, ears and brain revolting at what he was hearing, he knew that this heralded nothing good because Draco knew how atrocious his singing voice was. If he was pulling this out, it meant that the—whatever it was guiding the obsession was growing worse. And he had to do something before it set both himself and Black off. No, that wouldn't end well, at all.Sliding up by his son next to the window on his own broom, Lucius tried pulling Draco away. It didn't work. Black blowing him away from the window wasn't working either as Draco would just come back, hovering as close as he could, voice getting louder. That alone was enough to make Lucius cringe. In fact, despite how much he loved his son, he couldn't take his singing. Which meant drastic measures had to be taken to quell this before it grew worse!Drawing his wand, a determined look on his face, Lucius cast not only a Silencio, but a body binding spell on his son. Before Draco could fall, he levitated him onto his broom. It was time to lock Draco in his room until they could come up with something. That's all there was to it. He would have the elves create a temporary doorway into his own room, but this couldn't go on. No. Draco was confined to quarters until they could figure something out to stop this insanity.Coming over to the window after untangling himself from the freaking out Harry and taking in some much needed air, then removing the spell, Sirius leaned out then looked at Malfoy, shaking his head. “That didn't work. Which means, even if Draco can't see Harry, he's going to find him or get pulled there.”“Let me see what I can do,” Lucius sighed, shaking his head. “I'm confining him to his room until we can sort this. It's the best we can do while we wait. I'll stick close to him to ensure that he doesn't get out and have the elves set up an alarm in case he tries.”Not sure what to say, looking at the teen, Sirius slumped, “Understood. Do what you can. Harry and I—we'll keep busy and out of his line of sight.”Nodding, not sure what else to say, Lucius zoomed down towards the door, fully planning to make sure his poor son was in his room before removing the spells. This was horrific and he just prayed that between the Dark Lord and Severus, they could come up with something, fast.
Hands on her hips, Narcissa looked around the London townhouse, pleased with what she saw. Though the divorce wasn't finalized yet, it was clearly spelled out that she would acquire this property through the demise of the marriage. That was good, too. She loved the townhouse. With it being hers now, she was taking on decorating it to her tastes, gearing it towards the fun she would have. Draco, of course, would have his own floor to do with what he wanted and warded so he didn't have to experience all the people she planned to have over. Good and perfect.
As she looked around at all the elves scurrying hither and yon to tend to what she wanted, she felt that first niggling. Like any mother out there, she had that instinct when her child was in trouble. Because Draco took after his father and had a propensity for getting himself into messes, coupled with the lack of self control that most Malfoys seemed to have been born with, that instinct had been honed over the years to a fine point, one she could easily tell what the issue was, well, such as the area. Eyes narrowing, she gritted her teeth. Draco had gotten himself into some kind of a mess that was from his father not keeping a close eye on him. The latter—well, that was a given with Lucius as he didn't seem to take her seriously when she tried to get him to watch his son, explaining what Draco was like. No, this wasn't good as that flare told her this was huge, whatever it was.Drawing her wand, eyes flinty, seeming to catch fire, she turned on her heel and stomped out of the room. Oh, she knew just where Grimmauld Place was and could get through those wards if she invoked the right override password. And she planned to do just that. Then her soon to be ex-husband was going to pay for not keeping watch over his son! Him and every other grown adult in that house. That she vowed!
