Chapter 28
“Draco is free and with, the other two Malfoy’s, has been moved to a Ministry safehouse,” Sirius told the other two with a chuckle and grin. “Rufus was supposed to start the debriefing last night. With him, he probably did and will squeeze every bit of information out of Lucius he can get.”
“Good,” Remus nodded, smiling as he did.“That's about the gist of all of it,” Sirius then said, tossing the letter onto the table. “He doesn't know specifics, just what was said in the negotiations. Which means I got what I wanted and gave everyone a hand.”“Something I'm sure they all appreciate,” Remus pointed out. “Even the Ministry.”Harry leaned against Sirius, gazing at the parchment he tossed down and gave a slow nod. “It's good, for sure. Everyone just needs to worry what's coming from it. Plenty won't be happy.”“Oh, they won't,” Sirius agreed with another chuckle. “Batty Bella will be at the top of the list there. For once in her life, there isn't shit she can do to get back what I took away. Which means she's going to throw the biggest tantrum anyone has ever seen. As her tantrums include torture spells, they all need to stay alert. Since she can't get to me to take revenge on, she's going to go after everyone else she can think of to draw me out. And, for once, it's not going to work.”“From what I know, Bella is about as deadly as Voldemort,” Harry added quietly, pleased he was getting to the point he could participate in conversations again. While he still had plenty of issues with the physical part, such as doing something without being told he could, this was growing easier with each passing day to the point he was almost back to normal with it.“She is,” Sirius told him, giving Harry a squeeze after slipping his arm around him. “Unlike the other one, Bella is the kind you can't predict anything with because she's so chaotic. She had no real mission or goal in mind other than to maim, kill or destroy. He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named always has an ultimate goal he's working towards. And if she thinks she can pull something to please him, she'll do it. It's part of what makes her so deadly to deal with.”“I'm sure those using Grimmauld Place will need to stay alert as well. No one but a select few know we're not there. So, the other side will probably start to focus there to draw us out.” Remus told the two. He wasn't overly concerned, though. As long as they stayed safe, it was all that mattered.“I'm sure they realize it,” Sirius nodded. “They've been preparing. Now is the time they'll need it.”“Right,” Sirius said, changing topics, “let's go outside and see what we can work on. You managed to get two defensive spells down yesterday, so we'll try for the same today. Then we'll let Moony torture us by helping him decide what we're doing with decorating. We still have a ton there. That should take us to about lunch. After we eat—we'll figure it out then.”“We do need to decide on plenty, Sirius,” Remus told him, standing, though smiling as he did. It was pleasing to have something constructive to focus on since it aided the two in getting back to normal.“Yeah, well, definitely not my and Harry's thing, Moony,” Sirius told him, standing then helping Harry up as well. “Which is why we leave that bit to you. We'll manage, though.”As they headed towards the backyard, he said, “We're going to have an elf go to the Alley and pick up some catalogs for us. Though we have plenty to keep us occupied until we think it's safe to brave outside the house, its best we buy some bits to help keep us entertained.” He was thinking new brooms for all of them and some other fun bits. Then he grinned and added, “We need a copy of Fred and George's mail order catalog as well. Not only will it be fun to see what those two have concocted, but we can probably use plenty of it as well.”When Sirius got to the part about the shop, Harry couldn't help but snicker. They could have some fun with what the twins invented, that's for sure. And, honestly, he wanted to see some of what they came up with. With those two, you never knew what it might be.“We can,” Remus told him with a nod, though rolling his eyes slightly about the twin's shop. “We do need some book catalogs as well, not only for enjoyment, but Harry's schooling. He doesn't have the ones from last year. We might remember what was taught well enough, but it's best to make sure we know what was covered.”“Yeah, didn't think about that bit,” Sirius admitted, scratching his chin. “We need some kind of idea. The same with the coming year. While we'll do whatever we want with it, it's best to have some idea how they are gearing whatever.”“Exactly,” Remus nodded, putting a hand on Harry's shoulder and giving it a squeeze. “Once we're sure we have this mess under control and Harry is once more comfortable with the situation, we can take on parts of it. The rest—we can work a tad on some of it now, like non-verbal spells. It's easy enough.”“Let's start with that today. We worked some on the other side with them, but can push on,” Sirius told him.He then gave Harry a nudge and asked, “About Potions—do you still want to take it or not? I know you didn't like it, but I had a feeling it was more about Snape than the class.” Then he waited to see if Harry could answer. It was a fairly complex question, so he wasn't sure if he would manage. After struggling for a minute or so, Harry finally managed to say, “Not unless I have to. Not something I enjoy, honestly. The only reason I planned to go on with it was for Auror training. As that’s out, I don't see the need.” When he finished, he was relieved and grinning. This was most certainly far better than it had been!“Right, we'll drop it then,” Sirius told him, grinning himself, as he guided him through the door to the outside. That was real progress and made him feel loads better!Remus, too, was smiling over what Harry said. It was far better than what it had been like just a few days ago and it was a complex answer. “I say we take on the basics for Runes and Arithmancy. Not the full course, mind you, but some. It can help other areas and you never know when you might need it.”“Sounds good,” Harry nodded, happy he was doing better and the anxiety was lessening.“Moony, set up the dummies and we'll get ready,” Sirius told him when they stepped outside. As Remus went off to tend to the chore, he told Harry, hand still on his shoulder, “Let's work on the non-verbal spells. Most of what we're doing is easily translated into those, so it's a good way to start. Once you catch on, it'll become second nature and you won't have to worry.”When he saw Harry nod, he walked him through the first one they were going to tackle, making sure to explain it the best he could, including the theory and wand movement. He didn't anticipate a problem with the spell, but the non-verbal bit. One of the things he hoped to observe was if the frustration from doing it the non-verbal way would cause a setback of some kind. If it did, they would adjust accordingly then move on. Once he was sure Harry had it down, he began having him try after Remus stepped up by them. Then he waited to see how they would work with it from there.
“Remus did such a wonderful job of redecorating,” Molly observed, taking a seat. She had just walked around the house to see the changes and was stunned by how much it had been improved, not to mention pleased.
“It's far better than what it was,” Albus said with a nod, smiling. After a look around to see everyone had joined them, he asked, “Where are the younger ones? We don't want them overhearing some of this.” He inquired, knowing Ron, Ginny and Hermione were somewhere in the house.“They are exploring,” Arthur told him with a smile. “As it's safe and there isn't anything they can get into trouble with, we figured it was fine.”“It is,” Albus nodded, pleased. The house contained nothing dangerous anymore or hidden, so it was fine to let them roam.“Now, we need to press on,” Albus said, looking around. When everyone's attention was directed at him, he smiled then said, “First, the good news. I'm going to say, though I expect all of you here to keep it to yourself, Lucius is giving up everything he knows to the Ministry in exchange for Sirius revoking Draco's bastard status and Rufus freeing Draco from Azkaban. While I don't know exactly what he's said, I do know it was part of the deal he cut. Which means Rufus now has information which can help everyone in this fight. He gave me his assurances he will use it as well, planning to take the fight to the other side with it. So, we can expect plenty of issues.”“Good,” Minerva nodded, pleased with what she was hearing. “It can only help us.”“It can and will,” Albus confirmed. Then he added, “Though it's bound to set off issues. I was told there were known Death Eaters lingering in the park today. While I don't think they realize Sirius, Remus and Harry have moved, the fact they were there means we have to stay alert as we come and go. I'm also going to say the rest of you need to as well. What Sirius pulled off will anger plenty, most especially Bella. With how she, and some of the others are, we need to watch out for them.”“We do,” Moody grunted, looking around. “I heard through the grapevine she's beside herself at the loss of her money and being thrown out of the House of Black. Enraged was mentioned more than once in the conversation. An enraged Bella is highly dangerous.”“Indeed,” Albus agreed with a nod. “Those of you who know you're in the most danger, take special care to protect yourselves.” Then, looking at Tonks, he added, “Especially you and your family. While it makes no sense, like much of what Bella does, she's likely to take after all of you because of the blow.”“We're ready,” Tonks told him, voice determined. “I've moved back home until it's safe again. Between all of us, we'll stay safe. Mum and dad put up everything they could to protect the house. As I'm an Auror and connected to this, Rufus is ensuring people will keep watch when they can as well. Any Floo-call from mum during the day will be treated as top priority.”“Good,” Albus told her, relieved they had plenty in place. “While this is for Tonks, it goes for the rest of you as well; one hint of danger or it seeming like you need help, you call for it. We'll be there as fast as we can.”After hearing agreements all around, Severus held up his hand to get Albus' attention. When he had it, he asked, “While this won't affect the mess now, I want to know; is Draco coming back to school this fall? If he is, we need to prepare now as we'll have to protect him with all we have and go about plenty oddly. People are going to know Lucius turned 'traitor' to the cause.”Brow furrowing, Albus admitted, “I don’t know. Let me see what I can find out on the topic. You're correct, Severus. It's something we need to plan for now if he is. I'll have the Board put out feelers so we can find out.”“If he doesn't land himself right back in Azkaban before then,” Kingsley snorted, shaking his head. “That's part of the provision Lucius signed; one more stunt like what he was arrested for, and he's back in there with no hope of getting out until the war ends.”“It's my hope he finally learned his lesson,” Severus sneered, arms folded over his chest. “I don't know as I've not been in contact with them since the arrest. This may have been the one bit that finally drove home what we were trying to get across to him. If Lucius had to cut a deal to turn on the Dark Lord to get him out, he'll know this isn't a game, finally, and he will be in extreme danger from the other side. Maybe this finally worked. We'll have to wait and see.”“Which is why we need to know their leanings before we prepare for the start of term,” Minerva said, looking around. Then she added, softly, “And Harry. He's a year behind, but if he plans to return to school we need to prepare.”“I'll send out a letter to see their leaning on Harry, but I doubt he'll be returning. The bond alone would make it to where Sirius and Remus would have to return with him. Then there is the danger. No, I don't think they will, but I'll check,” Albus told her, making a note about it.“Right,” Albus then said after jotting it down, “we'll press on. There is much to cover here and I don't want to keep anyone too late. Rufus knows about the Horcruxes and is trying to find them. I've come up with a couple clues myself. So, for those of you good with history, I need a tad bit of help sorting where they might be. I think they are all related to Hogwarts, but not sure where they are located. Let's see what we can find when it comes to paths to finding them. I'll pass it on to Rufus so he can help as well, but we'll hunt them too as he's rather busy.” Then he began talking about the ring and what he thought about it. They would then press on from there.
To say Bella was irate would be the understatement of the century. Plenty had seen her mad before, though many who had didn't live to tell the tale, but never this irate. It was several things which had her that way. Losing her vaults, being kicked out of the House of Black, how it upset her Lord and now it looked like Lucius had turned traitor to get his son out of prison rather than face it stoically for the cause. Yes, she was mad. And people were going to learn how upset she was.
She, her husband and his brother had spent the day scoping out various places to see what to target. Though she desperately wanted to go after Grimmauld Place, it was apparently under a Fidelius as none of them could even see it. With the wards she knew were on it, there was no chance of attacking it. However, she wanted to strike at Sirius to show her displeasure of what he had done, so she was going to find a way to hurt him. She just didn't know how yet. After Apparating here and there all day, trying to decide, Bella finally hit upon what she should do. Standing in the graveyard in Godric's Hollow, she cackled madly as she looked at James and Lily Potter's headstones. Yes, the graveyard was gone. Then she was going to go after the house they died in. Once she was done there, the people of this town were going to feel her wrath as well. She was sure Sirius, and probably little baby Potter, would come out to do something about the desecration. Then she would have her chance. While none of them knew much about what was going on with those two since their return, it was time they came out to play once more.As she leveled her wand at the gravestones, she grinned manically then cut loose. Yes, it was time for some fun!
Though tired after mucking about all day, Sirius had a problem falling asleep that night, though he didn't know why. After a while of listening to Remus and Harry's deep breathing, he finally dozed off, relaxing. Then, though, he was jarred awake by a sharp rapping on their bedroom window. Not sure what was going on, he snagged his wand and sat up, leveling it the direction of the noise. Seeing an owl there, rapping hard on the glass, he wondered what was going on. There was a box for owls to drop mail in so they could collect it each morning. When he heard Harry and Remus wake up, asking what was happening, Sirius was about to slide out of bed with a groan to take whatever the bird had. If it showed up at their window this late at night, it was probably important.
Remus was instantly fully alert when he heard it was an owl. Heart already hammering faster, figuring this was nothing good, he bailed out of bed while the groggy Harry asked what was going on. “Let me tend to it, Sirius,” he said, not wanting him set off if it was bad news. After opening the window and taking the letter from the owl, he watched it wing off into the night over the busy city. Turning the letter over in his hands, he saw it was from Albus. For the Headmaster to send them something this late at night meant something big. Though uptight over what the letter might contain, he opened it then began reading. As he saw what was there, he went pale and started to tremble. Oh Merlin, no!“What's going on?” Sirius asked, trying to suppress a bone-cracking yawn. Sitting on the edge of the bed, he gave Harry a pat on the back when he sat up. The look on Remus' face had him already plenty wary, so he wanted to know, figuring it wouldn't be good.Though he didn't want to tell the two, knowing it was bound to set both of them off, he would. Coming over, he sat by them then said, softly, rereading the letter, “Some Death Eaters, led by Bella from what Albus understands, have attacked Godric's Hollow. They went after James and Lily's graves then the house before going after the rest of the town.”“What?!?!” Sirius snarled, standing.“Sirius, calm down,” Remus told him firmly. “Don't go off half-cocked! We can't go, remember that.”“That stupid bitch,” Sirius snarled, hearing Harry ask what happened, sounding plenty angry himself.“From what Albus says, it's being handled. He's there with some of the Order and Rufus has the DMLE, Aurors and Hitwizards in attendance as well,” Remus told him, grabbing Sirius' wrist and trying to get him to take a seat. He needed Sirius to calm down and not go to 'help'. “Just sit down, Sirius.”Rounding on Remus, Sirius snarled, “What the hell does she think she's doing going after those graves?” His hand was already itching to grab his wand and exact some retribution over this. While he didn't know just how bad it was as Remus hadn't mentioned damage, he wanted to do something!“Albus thinks it's to draw you out,” Remus told him, tugging to get him to take a seat. “This was something bound to set you off. And it did. She can't get at you any other way, Sirius, and probably wants to after what you did. Don't walk into her plan.”Still snarling, loudly, eyes flashing dangerously, Sirius did take a seat with a huff. The first thing he did was pull Harry between his spread legs and hold him. Feeling Harry wrap his arms around him, Sirius took several deep breaths in an effort to calm down. Once the red rage began to subside, he could understand what the still pale Remus was trying to get across to him and understood it.After several minutes of holding Harry close, Sirius let out a ragged sigh then nodded, not letting go of Harry. “How bad is it? Does he say?” He finally asked, though his voice was still slightly uneven from the abating anger.“He doesn't,” Remus admitted, checking to make sure but seeing nothing. “What he does impart is he'll owl us when he knows more.” Looking at Sirius, seeing his flushed face and how the sheen that had mostly gone away had returned slightly, he soothed, “Sirius—they can't hurt James and Lily. The two are beyond their reach. While they might have done something to their graves, they're beyond harm. It's just a ploy to entice you into engaging by hitting where it would upset you the most, nothing more than that. Leave it. Let Albus, the Order and Rufus handle it. We need to stay right where we are. This proves we do. If you go after her, it'll just walk you into whatever deranged scheme she has cooked up.”“He's right,” Harry said softly, clinging to Sirius, shaking from the rage he was feeling through the bond. “I get it, I really do. This is mum and dad, but we need to stay here.”Sirius looked down at Harry and could see him peering up at him then sighed. With a short nod, he agreed, “True. Let's—owl Albus back to let us know what's going on as he finds out. Just—yeah, the stupid bitch. She's trying to engage. We're not going to play.” Once those words were out of his mouth, he felt a bit better, though the anger wasn't going away. Just the idea she would take after the graves was enough to infuriate him. And make it to where he wanted revenge. He wouldn't, though. No, it wasn’t something he could chance. They needed to stay right where they were and hidden.“I will,” Remus assured him. Though he was keeping a calm front to help Sirius, he was just as upset over the whole idea as Sirius. And he wanted revenge over it or to help, something. To sit here and do nothing would bother him to no end. He would, though. No, they weren't going to allow themselves to end up drawn into whatever Bella cooked up. As angry as she was, there was no telling what she would do.“Let me write him back,” Remus said, standing, planning to stay in the room while he did. “While I do, why don't you have an elf bring us all something to drink. Hot cocoa sounds quite nice. It'll relax all of us while we wait for an answer.”Though he doubted there was much besides Harry and Remus which would relax him, Sirius did as suggested. It was at least something to do while they waited. Since he was sure any answer they would receive would take time, he planned to do something to alleviate the tension of the wait. He just didn't know what. All he did know was he wasn't letting go of Harry yet. No, it would keep him grounded, and probably help Harry as well.Once the elf popped in with the beverage and sat it on the small table, Sirius coaxed Harry to stand then the two went over to sit down. Pulling Harry back between his legs, he poured them both a beaker full and began to sip. Watching as Remus sent the letter off with a nondescript barn owl, he sighed. And now they had to wait. It would make them all mental, but he doubted any of them could sleep again.
