Chapter 28
Hands scrubbing through his hair, PJ paced the kitchen waiting for word about what everyone was dealing with. He had tried to stay in the bedroom, but felt confined and it made him mental so he came downstairs. While he didn’t feel as confined down here, the mental didn’t abate much. The urge to call Sirius to see how bad this was turning out was there, but he didn’t. With all they were probably dealing with, Sirius didn’t need distracted by a phone call.
As he paced faster, he tried to distract himself and focus his thoughts elsewhere. By now he had talked to DuBois a couple times. His friend was on the scene so he had filled him in and it didn’t sound good at all. This was a full on attack with the evil git himself showing up. The target, apparently, was the Muggles knowing the Ministry would show. They did, of course, and the Death Eaters were going after everyone.
With a groan, he stopped and tilted his head back, taking deep breaths. What he wouldn’t do for a Muggle telly right about now. They would at least be covering this some. If they were live on the scene, as he expected, he would know what to look for. The thought of going to a Muggle pub came to mind, but he discounted that. If something huge happened and someone popped over, he wanted to be here. Plus, if someone did pop over for another reason, he wanted to question them about what was going on.
Mind racing all over, envisioning the worst, he finally stopped pacing and threw himself on the bench at the table and groaned. Head dropping onto the table, he took deep breaths to calm himself. It would help nothing if he let his mind race over the ‘what-if’ and worst case scenarios. With all the Wizards who had to be on the scene, the evil git would have a helluva fight on his hands and couldn’t win, despite his tactics. Those in the Order were more than a match for him, as he well knew, add in those in the Ministry and they were more than a match! It would just take time and plenty of damage to end it.
Though he tried, he couldn’t calm his thoughts and his mind kept circling how bad this could end up. Just as he felt like pulling his hair out, an idea hit him. Standing up, he summoned one of his elves and had them fetch the Wireless. Though the Prophet was less than worthless at reporting real news, some of the Wireless stations were fairly decent. He hoped that one of them was on the scene and reporting as it happened. It would just take finding the right station, nothing more.
His elf must have sensed his mood because he turned up with it fast and handed it over. After a quick ‘ta’ PJ sat it on the table and used his wand to start scanning the channels. It didn’t take but about five taps for him to find a station which was broadcasting live from the scene. Once more taking a seat at the table, he summoned a drink and began to listen intently. While he couldn’t be sure how intensively they would report on the situation, he hoped it would be enough for him to figure out just what was going on and glean enough information on the situation to figure out plenty.
As he sipped his drink, his eyes were locked on the wireless, listening to everything the reporter said on the situation and adding what happened up to this point.
After sending a heavy duty blasting hex at the Death Eater he knew was Lucius, Sirius once more ducked behind a large granite statue the Ministry imbued with plenty of protections. This whole battle wasn’t pretty, but they were holding their own. And, from what he could tell, it was a draw as to who was winning. That was good.
The Ministry was here, of course, battling with them. They had also put up shields around the big wheel on the Thames so it looked like it was on fire, not being attacked. Smart move. As anyone would expect, Muggle services were around, but the Ministry was doing what they could with them, leaving the rest of them to fight You-Know-Who and the Death Eaters without worrying about the Muggles.
Wand out and keeping an eye on the battle, Sirius glanced over his shoulder then nodded when he saw Remus, Tonks, Bill, and a couple of others join him. “We need to come up with a better plan,” Sirius told them, voice raised so he could be heard above the cacophonous din. “We’re at a standstill as we are, so we need to find a way to get the upper hand. At least those of us in the Order. The Ministry has their own plan that they haven’t told us about, so we need something.”
“We do,” Bill said then made a couple suggestions. They would come up with something among themselves. Albus, who usually was the one to come up with a course of action, had his hands full dealing with He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, so it had to be them to come up with a way to handle this.
As he listened intently while keeping an eye on everything and trying to place where the Death Eaters were, Sirius nodded. While Bill didn’t have the best plan in the world, it was better than what they had now.
After swiping at the blood running down his face from a cut on his forehead to clear his vision, Sirius leaned down and put his hands on his knees, panting heavily. Though still clutching his wand and keeping an eye on the battle, he needed a rest for a minute or so to heal the cut on his head and catch his breath.
Hearing Remus say his name and put a hand on his shoulder, Sirius looked at his oldest friend. Though not cut up and bleeding, Remus’ robes were certainly showing he had engaged in the battle.
“We’re doing better,” Remus said quietly, keeping an eye on the war going on around him. He and Sirius were in a small shielded place the Ministry had put up to protect those needed a break or were wounded enough they had to get out of the way. “I think, if we keep it up, we’ll get the upper hand soon.”
“I hope,” Sirius panted out. His thought was if this battle went on for a long time, the other side would get the upper hand because of sheer hate and their lack of morals when it comes to evil and illegal spells. “The longer this goes on, the worse we’re going to fare is my thought.”
“That I tend to agree with,” Remus admitted. Pulling his old friend up, he healed the cut on his forehead then leaned back against a small tree there to rest a tad before throwing himself back into the melee.
As Sirius watched various people battling it out, he couldn’t help but think that he wasn’t throwing himself into the battle the way he used to, not caring how many chances he took. Remus, he thought, was doing the same. Both of them, and a few others, had plenty to live for nowadays. He had PJ, for more than one reason, to stay alive for. Remus had Tonks. That seemed to make a difference in staying cautious. However, it also spurred him on to help defeat the evil menace.
Eyes narrowed and a determined look on his face, he stiffened his spine and clutched his wand tightly. While this wouldn’t end the war, that would be a miracle, they could take out plenty from the other side. That was what he planned to help do. “Let’s see how many Death Eaters we can take out. I say we focus on the powerful ones and go from there. Even doing away with and capturing a few of them will help.”
“A good plan,” Remus agreed, eyes all over and trying to pinpoint the most powerful ones. If they could surprise them they would have an advantage.
“Let’s do this!” Sirius said, Disillusioning himself to help. Once more putting his shields in place, he stepped out and started to focus on Lucius again. If he could get Lucius in the hands of the Ministry, it would be a huge help.
PJ listened intently to the live report he found on another Wireless channel. From the sound of it, the reporter was very close to the battle because he could hear plenty of sounds which were indicative of fighting. He felt better now, honestly. This was a truthful report of the battle from what he could tell. They were reporting the good and bad along with just what was going on. It was even mentioned the head evil git was present. However, what had him breathing easier was they were reporting injuries, but no deaths so far. Perfect. While he wouldn’t relax until Sirius came home, but this was the next best thing for him.
The reporter in him wanted to take notes on all this, but he didn’t. It wasn’t something he could report on and DuBois was on the scene so there was no need. Instead, he would just listen until it was over. Then he would talk to Remus and Sirius about it and pass anything they said which might end up useful on to DuBois.
Fingers drumming on the table, he was still listening, but his mind started to wander to how bad it might end up and how it could affect so much. While part of him wanted to go join the others in the fight, he wouldn’t. The same with staying out of any future battles. No, he wouldn’t get involved in that way. He had other ways of helping and planned to do just that.
Pulling himself away from that train of thought, he began to become concerned about Sirius and Remus once more. Though sure they would be fine, he couldn’t help but worry about them and if they were among the wounded.
After what seemed like an eternity, the battle started to wind down. Panting heavily and exhausted, Sirius watched Lucius being hauled off by Aurors. He was one of about five of the big names they had caught. While it wasn’t many, it would end up enough to hurt You-Know-Who. As expected, You-Know-Who was still here and battling it out with several people. With as many Death Eaters as were following, he was sure the evil arse would vanish soon. He had accomplished what he wanted in showing up and making sure it was clear he was back, at least that’s what Sirius thought, that he would leave and wait for the panic to take over. Then he would capitalize on it. Once this was done, they would regroup and try to figure out what his next move would be. Since Fudge himself was here, there would be no doubt in the Ministry about just what happened. That could only help.
Shaking his head to get it together, he glanced around to see where he could best help. There were small battles going on still, but it was handled by those taking on whoever. Though he wanted to go over and join those going after the evil arse, he wouldn’t. They were doing fine and didn’t need his help.
With a soft groan, he stretched his sore muscles and went to find Remus. Between the two of them, they could take on someone and help.
Just as the minutes seemed to feel like hours, as the Wireless station reported the battle was over, PJ’s head came up as the front door opened. When the kitchen door opened and Sirius stepped in, PJ, without thinking, launched himself on the man and hugged him tightly.
With a grin, Sirius hugged him back, patting him on the back. He assumed PJ was going mental not knowing what was going on for sure. Yes, he spotted the Wireless on the table and heard part of the report, but that wasn’t the same as knowing for sure.
“You’re fine, aren’t you?” PJ asked taking a step back and looking the older man over, though not letting go of him. Sirius looks disheveled, but not hurt.
“I’m good. So is Remus and most others. From what I could tell, the only thing any Order members suffered are minor injuries.” Hand drifting to PJ’s shoulder, he gave it a squeeze. Lowering his voice he said, “I came home as fast as I could because I figured you were going spare.”
“I was, I admit it,” PJ grinned shaking his head. “Was hard to keep my arse planted right here.”
“I figured that as well,” Sirius nodded. Pulling PJ back into a hug, he sighed happily. While the battle was nasty, this made him feel much better. Then, with a sigh, he said, not letting go of the younger Wizard, “As you would expect, we have an Order meeting tonight.”
“I assumed,” PJ sighed, grumbling under his breath.
“I’ll make sure we spend plenty of time together tonight after it’s over. I’m exhausted, as you can probably guess, but we will. Even if it’s just to talk.”
“That I’d like,” PJ smiled, still holding onto Sirius.
Just as he was about to say something else, Sirius heard the front door open. With a sigh he knew it was time for everyone to start trickling in. While he wanted to continue, it was time to get down to business. However, before he broke off the hug, he gave PJ a passionate kiss.
Though blindsided by the kiss since neither of them knew who was coming in, PJ went with it, leaning into the kiss, holding Sirius close.
Hearing the kitchen door open, Sirius broke off the kiss and looked at PJ. “Just wait upstairs for me. Not sure how long this will last, but I doubt it’ll be that long as we’re all tired.”
“Will do,” PJ nodded, glancing over Sirius’ shoulder to see Remus come in. Nodding to the other man, he then, reluctantly, pulled out of the hug. Gathering the Wireless, he headed out of the kitchen, though shooting Sirius a longing look as others started to come in.
That night, after the meeting ended, Sirius and PJ were up in the room the two shared sprawled out in Sirius’ big comfortable bed sharing a beer. As would be expected, Sirius was exhausted and didn’t want to do anything else, but this was good by the two of them.
As they lay there, they talked. Mostly it was Sirius filling PJ in about the battle and what he thought would come of it. PJ listened intently to what he said to fill in the gaps of what he heard on the Wireless. The following day he would have Sirius tell him more, but the older man was tired now, something he could understand.
After they finished their second beer, Sirius was done for. Barely able to keep his eyes open, he wrapped his arm around PJ’s shoulders and pulled him closer. “Do me a favor,” he said in a sleep slurred voice.
“What’s that?” PJ asked, vanishing the empty bottle.
“Sleep with me tonight.” While he wanted to say more, Sirius was just too tired to explain himself. All he knew was he wanted the younger Wizard to stay with him all night.
Though he stayed up all night most times, PJ didn’t think about it. “Give me a minute to tend to something and change and I will,” he answered, smiling just a little.
Pulling PJ closer, Sirius lifted his head and kissed him. “Okay,” he mumbled after breaking it off. Then he flopped back down and watched PJ slide off the bed to tend to things. Yeah, this would be good.
Long after the two on the bed fell asleep, the two black Phoenixes were up with Hedwig talking to her about the next step of their plan. While it was going quite well, they wanted to keep pushing it. The old owl agreed with them and said she’d follow their lead in the matter. Since they seemed to have a plan for this, she would go with it.
