Chapter 26: Renewed Purpose
January 24th
“No, no, that will never do, little sister,” Naiya said forcefully.
“You must control the wind if you plan to summon it. Simply pulling in a great gust will not save
you, especially not if it ends up harming your allies.”
“I know that,” Eris snapped.
From where Harry was
standing it really didn’t seem like Eris was having a good training day. He wasn’t doing that much better, truth be
told, but at least Tahdei wasn’t snapping at
him. It almost seemed as if Naiya and Eris were at odds over something completely
different. Signaling to Tahdei to stop his assault for a moment, Harry
surreptitiously listened in on the arguing going on between the two females,
hoping that he might gain an insight into what they were really angry about.
“I don’t think that you do consider such things,”
Naiya was saying then. “Some things in life can not simply be
twisted to work however you please. Loopholes do not always exist.”
“And if they do, why shouldn’t we use them,”
Eris asked angrily.
“Things are done a certain way for a
reason. It’s never wise to try and
change the way a thing is meant to work.”
Naiya summoned a string of water from the air
and began to have it flow in a circle before her. “It goes against nature, and you are a thing
of nature. Wizards may be able to bend
magic to do nearly whatever they please, but elves must stay within the
confines of an element’s capabilities.”
Eris did not look pleased with
this statement and quickly began to argue.
“Harry and I do strange things with the elements all the time! How is this so different?”
“That is called creativity,” Naiya said tightly.
“What you want is nothing more than an abusive push of power.”
“Have it your way then,” Eris screamed and
stalked out of the Room of Requirement, slamming the door behind her.
Harry stared at Naiya for a moment before turning to Tahdei. “What is going on?”
“Your sister and Naiya
do not always have to see eye-to-eye on things,” the elf said calmly.
“That had nothing to do with our training,”
Harry said firmly. “Give me a bit more
credit.”
Tahdei
sighed. “I honestly do not know what has
caused this argument, Harry, but I do know something about them that is
definitely a point of tension.”
Harry glared at the elf. Why did everyone insist upon keeping
secrets? “Tell me.”
Tahdei looked away
from him towards where Naiya was now exiting the room
in a nearly identical fashion to Eris.
“First, you must know that Naiya has been very
lonely in her life. Her personality is
well suited to a long-term mating and she always thought that being pure
blooded would allow her to find a mate quickly.
Instead, she has lived over two hundred years without a single
potential. She has traveled to nearly
every wizarding community in the world continuously
in one large circuit searching for her intended.”
Harry closed his eyes, cursing silently. “And now she’s found a potential in Eris,
only to realize that Eris is destined to be with someone else.”
“Yes,” Tahdei said
softly. “I feel my daughter’s pain. Her mother was a long time in coming into my
life and she died far too soon, barely seeing Naiya
and Nanyin come of age before violence snatched her
away from us. She feels very strongly
about Eris accepting Sirius into her life.
She thinks it is a great gift, and she is correct. If the two of them are at odds…well, it most
likely has to do with Eris bonding.”
Harry nodded. “The question is, with how well things seem
to be going with Sirius and Eris, what could Eris have told Naiya
to make her so mad?”
“Eris is quite adept at the art of secrecy,
Harry,” Tahdei said slowly. “There is a chance that she only wants
everyone to think that she’s accepting Sirius.”
Harry sighed and gazed off towards the
door. “And with only a few of us knowing
that Sirius is actually Eris’ predestined mate she could lead everyone along
for quite a while without anyone putting too much pressure on her. Not even Severus knows. Hell, I didn’t even know that you and Naiya knew.”
“Its difficult to hide from one such as I, who
has the matchmaking gift,” Tahdei said with a kind
smile.
“And Naiya was bound
to know because of Eris being her potential.”
Harry pinched the bridge of his nose.
“When is life going to get a little less complicated?”

February

“Has there been any change,” Draco asked
quietly, carding his fingers through Harry’s hair.
Harry shook his head. “I haven’t seen them speak to each other
since the argument nearly two weeks ago!
Tahdei has been training us without Naiya and Eris hasn’t once asked where she is.”
Draco frowned. This really didn’t sound good at all. Before this, Eris and that female elf had
been together on a daily basis, even if it was only for a half hour to talk
quietly. “And Tahdei
thinks it has something to do with Eris bonding?”
“Or refusing to do so,” Harry said, shifting
around so Draco could see his worried face.
“I’m starting to wonder if we’ve made a mistake, love.”
It felt
as though something cold had been pushed through Draco’s veins. Harry couldn’t be suggesting what he
thought. “What are you saying?”
“I don’t think we should have kept Eris’
secret,” Harry said firmly. “She’s
hurting herself by holding back. My
power has nearly doubled since we bonded.
I’m two steps away from fourth animagus form, fourth! These after Tahdei told us that Eris and I
would probably only manage ten in our lifetimes. He’s starting to think that we may actually
have infinite forms, just like full blooded elves. She needs to bond, Draco. She needs to be at her top level.”
It took a great deal of willpower
for Draco not to jump up form his seat and run from the room, that or hex
Harry. He hissed through gritted teeth,
“Are you insane? I can’t betray
Eris. I will never betray her trust!”
“Even if our failure to act ends up killing
her, killing us all?”
Draco blanched. “What are you on about?”
“Eris is my rock, Draco,” Harry said
gently. “I feel stronger and more
confident than I ever have in the past, but I need her. She gives me the tightest connection with my
powers.”
Draco sighed and leaned back in
his chair. Why was it that just when
things seemed to be moving along nicely the shit hit the fan? “Bugger this.
When do you want to talk to Severus?”
“Are you sure, Draco,” Harry asked
quietly. “Once we do this…we can’t take
it back.”
Draco thought hard for a
moment. “Let’s be patient for now. I have a feeling that we still have some
time. Let’s watch her carefully and see
if its really necessary for us to strike.”

February 10th
Eris flipped through the pages of
her book until she came to the lines where she had left off the night
before. Smiling to herself, Eris began
to recite the lines quietly while sitting by the fire.
“Nature, that framed us of four elements
Warring within our breasts for regiment,
Doth teach us all to have aspiring minds.
Our souls, whose faculties can comprehend
The wondrous architecture of the world
And measure every wand’ring planet’s course,
Still climbing after knowledge infinite
And always moving as the restless spheres,
Wills us to wear ourselves and never rest
Until we reach the ripest fruit of all,
That perfect bliss and sole felicity,
The sweet fruition of an earthly crown.” [1]
“That’s nice.”
Eris jumped up from her chair and
spun around to see Harry smiling at her.
“Yes it is,” she said with a grin.
“You startled me.”
“I noticed,” Harry said with a chuckle. “So what are you reading?”
“It’s a play called Tamburlaine the Great,” Eris said, setting her book down. “I don’t suppose you’ve read any Marlowe?”
Harry gave her a disbelieving
look. “I thought you knew me better than
that by now. I’ll just stick to spell
books for now. It was nice though. What’s it about?”
Eris frowned and considered her
brother thoughtfully. “It’s about a man
who wanted to rule the world because he thought it was ordained by fate. He was born a Shepard and rose to greatness
through charm and backstabbing. Some
people thought he was greater than a god and others thought he was worse than a
devil. He reminds me of Voldemort.”
“I can see why,” Harry said softly. “But the beginning lines reminded me of you
and I.”
“Did you need something,” Eris asked, trying
to change the subject.
“Tahdei says I’m
ready to achieve my fourth form,” Harry said with a bright smile. “I wanted you to see. Maybe it will help you with yours.”
“Maybe,” Eris said with a frown. “I still don’t have any idea what I’m going
to turn into. I don’t think it could be
very useful if I’m going to turn into some sort of fish.”
“Well, you’ll know when we get there,” Harry
said happily. “Now let’s go.”
________________________________________________________________________
Sirius couldn’t wait to see
Harry’s new form. According to his
godson, the form was expected to be rather large, not quite the size of the
Hungarian Horntail, but big nonetheless.
He’d been wracking his brain, trying to come up with some idea of what
creature would best serve to represent Harry’s earth elemental power, but all
he could come up with was that it would probably be some sort of docile
herbivore. Of course, that was just a
little theory.
“Alright, Harry,” Tahdei
was saying. “Close your eyes and
concentrate.”
Sirius waited impatiently,
watching his breath form little puffs in front of him. He glanced over at Eris and saw that she was
slowly shifting back and forth on her feet, rubbing her arms. He slipped over to her and wrapped her in his
arms. Leaning close to her ear he whispered,
“If you’re cold you could use warming charms.”
“If I’m casting I could distract Harry,” Eris
said quietly. She turned her head a bit,
smiling at him. “Not to mention that you
wouldn’t have come over here to hold me then.”
“Slytherin,” he hissed teasingly.
She smirked. “Ah yes, and who’s the gallant Gryffindor who
came over to save me from nasty Old Man Winter?”
Sirius smiled and kissed the top
of Eris’ head. “Be quiet and watch your
brother, minx.”
Sirius followed his own advice
then and returned his focus to Harry.
The young wizard was grimacing in concentration. The air around him seemed tense. Eris stiffened in his arms and whispered,
“Its happening. I can feel it.”
She was
right. Harry seemed to shimmer for a
moment and then he began to grow. And
grow. And grow. His chest broadened and his skin turned a
speckled grey. It looked as though it
was hardening. Harry’s hair disappeared
and his face soon looked like one pressed into clay by a small child. When the transformation ended, Harry was a
good seven meters tall and appeared to be made completely of stone.
“Sweet Circe,” Eris said in awe. “Sirius, do you know what that is?”
Sirius had no clue. Frankly, he was concerned that Harry’s
transformation had just gone completely wrong.
“No idea, love.”
“He’s an earth elemental, a rock golem, made
of solid stone and completely immune to all wizard
magic.” Eris sounded like she could
hardly believe the words coming out of her own mouth.
“I’ve never heard of such a thing,” Sirius
said in confusion.
“You probably wouldn’t have, Sirius,” Remus
said with a smile. “Unless of course you
had thoroughly read all the books
Eris had on Numina Pumilum.”
“What’s he talking about, sweetheart,” Sirius
asked, stepping back from Eris.
She
turned an excited smile on him. “When
the Numina Pumilum were a
young species and their use of elemental power was just beginning to form, they
used elementals instead of wielding the elements themselves. There were a finite number of elementals in
the world and wizards began to kill them off in an attempt to render the Numina Pumilum harmless. That’s spurred the evolution of elven magic to the level that Harry and I possess
today. I’m willing to bet that no one’s
seen an elemental in a thousand years.”
“Try three thousand, little one,” Tahdei said solemnly.
“This is a great honor and a good sign I would think. I’m anxious to see what your next form will
be. Perhaps a water elemental, if you
remain in step with your brother.”
“Perhaps,” Eris said softly. Sirius looked down at her in concern
then. She sounded so sad. She smiled up at him then. “I’m going to go speak with someone before I
turn in for the night.”
Sirius sighed. He’d been hoping to spend some more time with
Eris. Still, her tone suggested that she
wouldn’t welcome company. “I’ll tell Nox not to wait up for you.”
“Thank you,” Eris said sweetly and then pulled
him down for a kiss that ended much too quickly. “I’ll see you later.”
Sirius watched her head off
towards Hagrid’s hut and assumed that she was
probably going to conduct some research.
He turned and looked at Tahdei. “What do you think is stopping her? She’s usually so confident and in top
form. Nothing against Harry, but she’s
usually a step ahead of him with things like this.”
“That’s true,” Remus said.
“She’s afraid,” Tahdei
said with a minute frown. “It happens
some times that the elf is afraid of the beast inside. Is Eris afraid of water?”
“Not that I know of,” Sirius said. Of course, he’d never seen Eris near any
bodies of open water. “Do you think
that’s what it is, that she’s afraid of water and therefore afraid that she’ll
transform into an aquatic creature?”
“That maybe,” Tahdei
said thoughtfully. “Its
also entirely possible that she’s afraid of suffocating before she can get to
water.”
“Then we’ll just have to use the Room of
Requirement,” Harry said, coming over to then back in his normal form.
“That transformation was really something,”
Sirius said, clapping Harry on the back.
“James would have been damn proud.”
“Thanks,” Harry said with a sheepish
grin. “Now will someone tell me what the
hell I just turned into?”
________________________________________________________________________
Eris knocked timidly on the door
of Hagrid’s hut.
She’d heard Harry say numerous times that Hagrid
knew a good deal about magical creatures, even things that most other wizards
would never know. She was hoping that
he’d have some answers for her.
The door
opened revealing the massive wizard who lived within. “I wondered when ye would get ‘round to comin’ ter say hello, Eris.”
“Hello, Hagrid,”
Eris said with a shy smile. This was one
of Harry’s favorite people and she had no desire to insult him in any way. “I was wondering if I could talk to you for a
while. You see, I heard you were the
wizard to talk to if I had questions about magical creatures.”
“Sure, sure, come on in,” he said with a wave
of his hand. “I’d love ter chat ye up, specially if yer willin’ ter
come ter one of my classes some time. The students would love ter
see a livin’ example when we discuss Numina Pumilum. I’d ask Tahdei, but
I’m ‘fraid he might be insulted.”
“I’m sure he wouldn’t,” Eris said as she came
inside. “Nevertheless, I’m more than
willing to help you when they begin studying them. As a matter-of-fact, its
elves that I’ve come to talk to you about.”
“Really,” Hagrid
asked, looking very surprised. “I’d ‘ave thought that you’d be knowing
more about them than me at this point.”
Eris smiled. “Maybe with some things, but you, my friend,
seem to have a knack for knowing the instinct of all creatures, their…habits
and abilities.”
“Well, I don’t like ter
brag, but I like ter see all creatures happy,” Hagrid said with a smile.
“So, what can I tell ye?”
Eris smiled. At least someone was willing to help her.

February 12th
“Okay, Eris,” Remus said softly. “We’ve had the Room of Requirement place this
pool here so that we can immediately put you into the water if you do turn into
a strictly aquatic creature. Hermione
looked up a charm that will allow us to instantly turn it to salt water if
that’s what you require.”
Remus looked Eris up and
down. She didn’t look nervous, but not
quite confident either. “Why’s everyone
here?”
Sirius stepped forward then and
gave Eris’ arm a light squeeze. “We
figure if you turn into something fairly large it may take all of use to
levitate you into the pool and give you enough time to change back.”
“Yeah, and we’re moral support,” Ginny called
from where she stood in the corner with Blaise.
Eris smiled. “Thanks, guys.”
Remus looked around, noticing that
Eris hadn’t said anything about Naiya’s absence. He was starting to wonder if the elf had left
the school entirely. Tahdei
motioned for Eris to approach the pool, speaking in comforting tones, “Just
close your eyes and pull for the form that is closest to the surface yet beyond
the first three you have achieved.”
Eris nodded and then closed her
eyes. Remus was feeling very tense about
this whole situation. As Eris began to
change, the wolf within him sensed something amiss. He sniffed the air quietly, trying not to
draw the attention of the others.
Something was very wrong.
Something dangerous was coming.
He turned his attention back to Eris and saw that her form was rather
large, but definitely not an aquatic animal.
It appeared that she was turning into a very large…feline. He frantically looked around the room in the
moments before Eris’ shift was complete.
Only one other face seemed to be registering just how much trouble they
were about to be in if they didn’t act quickly, Hermione.
The brilliant young
witch reacted before him. “Everyone, cast Bubble-Head Charms on yourself now!”
Luckily,
no one took the time to question Hermione’s command. Remus cast one on himself
and then quickly threw the same spell around Tahdei. A moment later, Eris’ shift was
complete. She had transformed into a Nundu, a giant leopard whose very breath carried with it
deadly disease.
Remus sighed. “Eris, you’ve turned into a Nundu. Can you
control the disease your breath carries?”
The
leopard face looked thoughtful for a moment and then nodded. Tahdei moved
forward and gently pat Eris’ head. The
elf looked calm, but Remus could smell his fear. Tahdei stepped back
then and spoke firmly, “Change back, Eris.
No good can come from you being in this form at the moment.”
Eris changed back, looking a bit
confused. “Did I do something wrong?”
“No, little one,” Tahdei
said gently. “Your form simply confused
me. You seemed to have skipped over your
water form…or you are resistant to it.”
“I think it’s a good thing,” Draco said sharply. “An earth elemental and a Nundu, both very powerful creatures, practically
unstoppable really.”
“Neither is unstoppable, Draco,” Severus said
firmly.
“Close enough,” Blaise said, standing up for
his friend’s assessment. “Draco told me
that Harry’s earth elemental form is resistant to wizard magic. The only way wizards got rid of elementals in
the first place was by destroying the portals they came through from the
elemental planes.”
“Yes,” Hermione said, looking like she was
ready to pick up the thread. “Eris’ Nundu form will be well protected too. Fantastic
Breasts and Where to Find Them says that no Nundu has ever been taken down by less than one hundred
wizards.”
Remus decided to try and diffuse the anger
that was beginning to build in the room.
“I’m sure that Severus is simply trying to point out that we must not
get cocky, no matter how much the fight now seems weighted in our favor.”
Eris smiled at him then. “And he’s absolutely right. You never know what might happen.”
Somehow, Eris’ response did little
to ease the tension in Remus’ stomach.
Indeed, he smile sent a chill right through him.
