Chapter 28: Slytherin verses Ravenclaw
He didn’t know why he felt so nervous as he announced himself to the portrait of Salazar Slytherin, who guarded the entrance into Severus’ private rooms. Well, maybe because it wasn’t every day that he got bested by a fifteen year old girl. He smirked inwardly. She was definitely Severus’ kid.
Maybe she was the reason why he never wanted to settle down—never wanted to make any type of long term commitment. His father pleaded with him over the years to find someone, anyone, to marry and produce heirs or even adopt. He ruefully shook his head at the thought. His conscious wouldn’t allow for him to just resign himself to a loveless marriage.
Calhoun had a string of lovers over the years and the majority of them were kept for a night or two, nothing lasting longer than a week. Although he should have had some hunch from the moment he first held Sheridan that there was something special about her, but she was just an infant at the time. However, their souls recognized one another, the connection was made then.
Maybe that was why he flirted with her as she matured. A dangerous game, for sure, but he would have never played it to the end. The consequences far out weighted the prize to be had; and pleasures of the flesh were not worth the risk or his friendship with Severus and Sirius, of course, he valued living as well.
“Can I please speak with Sheridan,” Calhoun asked upon the opening of the door.
Sirius stepped aside allowing the lawyer into their chambers. The rooms hadn’t changed all that much since Severus had started his teaching post. The twins rooms were just opposite of the master bedroom with each having its’ own bathing chambers; and there was another door leading into Severus’ personal lab. There was a small size kitchenette off to the right of the sitting room area should the family want to dine in; however, Calhoun never seen either Severus or Sirius to cook. He didn’t know if they could.
Books and scrolls of parchment littered one corner where Severus’ desk was set-up for grading. There were plenty of other tomes pilled in towers on the floor around the small work area. At any given moment they looked about right to topple over from the slightest brush of wind.
“She’s in her room,” Sirius offered.
“Where’s Sev? I haven’t seen or heard from him since this whole debacle had started,” Calhoun inquired.
“He’s actually lying down.”
Gasping lightly, Calhoun was surprised to hear that the Potions master was having a lay-in during the middle of the day. Something was off.
“Is he alright?”
“Yeah, he’s fine. Just a bit overwhelmed, you know,” Sirius said not really going into too much detail.
He and Severus briefly discussed that they were going to wait until he was no longer in immediate imperil before letting everyone know about him being pregnant. With everything that was going on, Sirius was fearful that all the added stress would cause his husband to miscarry and they didn’t want that to happen, so they were being cautious for the time being of not mentioning Severus’ condition until everything was squared away properly with Sheridan.
Taking a step forward, Sirius stopped Calhoun by grabbing hold of his arm.
“I know that this is the last thing that you want to do but if you ever cared one inkling for my daughter, don’t break her heart or I’ll swear to you that there won’t be anything left of you for them to identify.”
Sucking in a breath of air; Calhoun noted the coldness of Sirius’ grey eyes. Nodding his head in understanding, the ex-convict let going of his friend’s arm, giving Calhoun’s shoulder a gentle squeeze then retreated into his room to join Severus for an afternoon nap.
Knocking on the door, Calhoun entered.
“Hello, Sheridan.”
Bright obsidian orbs glanced to the door when it opened. Sheridan gave a slight smile. Her heart was beating rapidly and she felt a little light headed.
“Please having a seat, Mis-“
Holding up his hand, Calhoun said, “You may call me Mercier or Calhoun or even Cal, Sheridan, giving the circumstances.”
“Mercier?”
He chuckled. “It my middle name and it was my grandfather’s. My mother liked it.”
The silence was awkward.
“Would you like some tea?” Sheridan offered taking a couple of steps to the tea service cart, but Calhoun stopped her.
“No, I can’t stay long. I have an appointment at the Ministry to file our paperwork. I wanted to see how you were doing,” he asked.
“I am well. Thank you for asking,” she replied.
Not knowing what else to say, Sheridan crossed the room to him intending on walking him out. He lifted a hand to her face, gently caressing it.
“I didn’t get an opportunity to ask you, Sheridan, as strange as this came about, I think that Fate has a twisted sense of humor, wouldn’t you agree? “
“What do you mean?” she whispered her face growing hot from being in close proximity of him.
He leaned in closer to her. He inhaled deeply. Her scent reminded him of a freshly made batch of cookie dough. Calhoun smelled it before, but at the moment he couldn’t quite place from where. He would have to ask her about it later.
“Fate it would seem set us to be born at the wrong time—I was born too early or you were born too late and yet, you knew without even realizing it, but you knew.”
Their breath was mingling. Sheridan could feel the heat radiating from his skin.
“I’m not sure wha-what you’re referring too. What did I know, Mer…Mercier?”
“That…we are… soulmates,” he crushed his lips upon hers taking the rest of her breath away.
Her legs nearly gave out.
If Calhoun hadn’t slipped his arm around her waist, Sheridan just knew that she would have falling flat on her arse. That would have been humiliating.
Pulling away from her, Calhoun whispered in her ear as he softly nibbled on her lobe, “Will you marry me, Sheridan?” Calhoun slipped the simple but elegant engagement band on her left ring finger.
Her mind was a little clouded.
I heard him speaking. What did he say? Wait-a-second, she needed air. Sheridan snapped out of the fog. She gave her head a bit of a shake. What just happened?
Crimson eyes were carefully assessing the young woman in front of him.
“Did you just ask me something?” Sheridan inquired with some suspension.
Oops… he thought. He shouldn’t have done that.
“Sorry, Sheridan, I got a little carried away with myself. I asked if you will marry me.”
She looked at the ring that now adorned her finger. When did that get there?
Alright, if he wants to plays games then I can play as well. “Yes, I’ll marry you,” she answered steeling her resolve.
Calhoun smiled at the acceptance.
“With some conditions,” she continued.
He didn’t like the sound of that.
“Such as?”
Sheridan put some space between them. He did something to her and she needed a clear head to think in order to get what she wanted.
“Such as, you taking my family name. We’ll hyphen our names of course.”
He was about to protest as he was the last of his bloodline; but he nodded his head in acquiescence. Calhoun knew the benefit of having the name Black, not that his family was a slouch in social standing—far from it.
“Anything else, my dear?”
“Yes. What did you just do to me?” she asked.
Sighing, Calhoun was hoping to not have to discuss this just yet. “It’s getting late, Sheridan, and I really must go. I’ll be back on Friday to come get you at the start of the weekend and we’ll have dinner. One of your parents has to attend of course and then you can ask me any question you like.”
“Okay,” she replied timidly bowing her head.
Tilting her head up to him, his heart broke as he stared into glassy obsidians. “Please look at me. I promise I won’t ever do that again.”
“Okay.”
“I… this is a delicate situation, Sheridan. While you are my soulmate, I’m a lot older than you. Once we are married we cannot get a divorce or an annulment. The terms of our contract forbids it. Even though I am taking your name, I’m the head of our family—you are to live with me when you are not in school. Your life will change once we’re wedded. The only thing that I ask of you is to be honest and forthcoming with any problems that you may have. Right now, I can’t say that I love you but I know with time that I will come to.
Her heart deflated a little when he said that he didn’t love her. Sheridan sniffled. Maybe she made a mistake.
Hugging her closely, Calhoun loathed that maybe he said too much but she needed to hear it. “It will be alright, my dear. Just trust me.”
“Okay.”
They stood together entwine in each other’s arms until Calhoun was forced to leave.

Meanwhile across the hall…
Leaning with his ear against the door, Sirius was straining to hear what Calhoun was saying to Sheridan. He intended to join Severus in bed but he couldn’t just very well allow that shyster to be totally alone with his baby girl.
Getting fed-up his spouse’s antics, Severus called out to Sirius, “Will you come away from there.”
It was too quite. Nothing was being said—as if all talking ceased altogether. Did he just hear a moan?
“Sirius!”
“Shh, Sev. I can’t hear anything.”
Rolling his dark eyes skyward, Severus tried again to gain his husband’s attention.
“And you won’t hear anything, Siri. I told Sheridan to cast a privacy charm on her room.”
Turning around to face Severus, Sirius was stunned that he would do such a thing.
“Wh-why!”
“Because I knew that you would do this. Give them some peace will you. Nothing is going to happen with us right next door,” Severus said.
The Potions master smirked at the kicked puppy look Sirius now sported. He was quite enduring looking so beat-up.
“Now, you’d promised me that we’ll have a nap and that’s what I want,” Severus ordered while raising-up one side of the covers inviting Sirius to join him in bed.
Grumbling to himself, Sirius doggedly walked over to their bed and reluctantly climbed in. He settled himself next to Severus, cuddling up to him and laying a hand over his belly.
Inwardly smiling at the thought of having another baby under foot; Sirius was hoping that he would be able to skip out on work for another couple of days but duty calls. Rufus send him an owl earlier that day (which he’d ignored) requesting that he make an appearance then he could do whatever he wanted just as long as he’d showed for at least an hour or so.
He’d been putting it off, but life it seems was determined to pull him from his family. There had been several unexplained attacks and numerous cases of missing persons being filed. Sirius held off on going to work simply because he was worried about Severus upon finding out about the unplanned pregnancy.
And not to mention Sheridan’s scheming begetting a child—
His blood was starting to boil just thinking about it.
“Sev?”
“Hmm,” Severus answered sleepily.
“What’s going to happen on their wedding night? I mean wouldn’t it be kind of awkward for Calhoun… to you know…”
Groaning in complaint, Severus turned over facing away from his lover.
“Siri, please. That is the last thing I want on my mind before I go to sleep. You let me worry about Sheridan’s wedding night and you figure out how we’re going to tell the twins about the baby.”
They agreed to tell Orion and Sheridan about their new sibling. Severus was praying for a positive reaction from them. After all, it wasn’t every day Severus had an opportunity tell his almost grown kids that another child was about to usurp their lives.
Severus briefly wondered how Lucius dealt with informing the boys about James being pregnant. He would have to ask him next time he saw his friend.
Placing a kiss to Severus’ brow, Sirius rubbed soothing circles along his stomach, lulling him back into the realm of Morpheus.
All the problems that cropped-up with Sheridan and Calhoun would work itself out, but for now, this alone time was for them.
oOoOoOo
Potions classes were cancelled for the remainder of the week, Severus thought with some relief. His morning sickness finally decided to make itself known. He didn’t remember having morning sickness with the twins.
With Sirius gone back to work, Severus was now left to deal with being ill on his own. His stomach gave another lurch as he stuck his head back into the toilet. He’d been in the bathroom for a good while now. He had one of the house-elves to get Albus.
He informed the Headmaster that he would not be able to attend any of his classes for the day. Albus was kind enough to give him the rest of the week. Sometimes Severus couldn’t stand the man.
“Moppy,” Severus called out. His stomach was sore from the over usage of muscles.
“Hows may I help?” Moppy asked popping into the bathing chamber with her master.
“Pumpkin juice and a bit of crackers, please.”
“Would yous be liking any other foods?” it asked.
Severus blanched at the mere thought of food. “No, just only what I asked for.”
Standing on shaky legs, Severus held on tightly to the vanity until the world stopped moving. He rinsed out his mouth then brushed his teeth. Before climbing back into bed, he noticed a bed tray with his requested items. He nibbled on a cracker and took a sip of juice. It was all that he could keep down and didn’t want to risk another bout of vomiting.
Sighing in exhaustion, Severus closed his eyes for some much need sleep, wondering briefly when Sirius was coming back.
When he wake-up later, he was going to as Albus to get him a substitute just until his morning sickness passed. Severus for a split second wondered if his father would be willing to stand-in for him.
oOoOoOo
Dumbledore announced that classes would resume the following week and that students should take this time given to catch-up on much needed work. However, should anyone need help, he would be more than happy to assist them until Professor Snape’s return.
The noise level in the Great Hall was an all-time high as the gossip mill ran its course on reasons why their surly Potions teacher was missing-in-action this week. Some of the students even speculated that Professor Snape finally did himself in and drank an unlabeled bottle of poison. Others were convinced Snape had been arrested for his alleged crimes as a former Death Eater. The worse of the rumors that was going around was that he and the ex-convict were getting a divorce.
The male Black heir apparent almost snorted. His class-mates were stupid. His parents would never be able to get a divorce owing to the fact that they were forever bound.
Orion was fed-up listening to chatterboxes around him. He saw his sister sitting next to Draco and she didn’t look too well and that was saying a lot as the girl was so keen into looking pretty all the darn time. Draco had a frown on his face as he was talking to her.
She looked about ready to cry with each word that was being said.
“Looks like I have to rescue my sister from your brother,” Orion said to Harry.
Quicksilver orbs glanced over at the Slytherin table and sure enough, Sheridan was sniffling a little and Draco looked livid.
They got up and went over to them.
“Let’s go, Sheri,” Orion said gently taking her by the arm as Harry and Draco followed behind them.
Hermione and the others made to get up and follow but Harry shook his head indicating that they would all talk later. The Gryffindor nodded her head in understanding and sat back down. Obviously, it was a family matter and Harry or Orion would tell them if they wanted them to know.
The Black and Malfoy siblings found themselves in the Room of Requirement. Harry thought of an outdoor scene with a luminous lake and tall rolling grass. It reminded them of the grounds around Hogwarts, which was partly correct. Harry wanted a tranquil setting, because it seemed as if Sheridan and Draco needed a breather from whatever that had their knickers in a twist.
Sitting down on the blanket that was laid out for them, Orion rounded on his friend.
“Alright, Dray, what gives?”
“Why don’t you ask your sister,” Draco snarled.
Turning all eyes to the younger twin, they waited.
“Well, Sheri?” Orion asked.
“I… that is to say, that I’m…”
Smacking his lips in irritation, Draco glared at her.
“Your sister and I have been-”
“He doesn’t need to know that, Draco!”
“Then tell him. I nearly got skewed by my father over this,” Draco ranted.
“Does this have anything to do when Dad and Grandfather came here the other day?” Harry asked.
Both teens immediately nodded their head.
Unfortunately, Sheridan started playing with the jewelry on her finger.
“Is that an engagement ring?” Orion inquired grey eyes popping from the heirloom piece. “Sweet, Merlin, Sheri! Where the bloody hell did you get such a thing? And when did you get it?”
Harry and Draco also noticed it as well.
“Wow,” was all Harry could say.
Draco merely blinked. He didn’t know that the situation escalated to warrant a marriage proposal. Oh, he was so glad that it wasn’t him.
She giggled a bit, her face starting to burn from embarrassment. Sheridan was praying to all know deities to allow the ground to open-up and swallow her whole; alas… no such thing happened.
“Yeah, about that… Mercier-”
“Who?” the three echoed.
“Calhoun.”
“Oh.” They motioned for her to continue.
“Anyway, Calhoun asked me to marry him and I said yes.”
“Wait-one-bloody-minute! Does Mum know about this? Does Father? Because if Father doesn’t then he’s going to flip!” Orion shouted. “Why is he proposing to you? What did you do?”
“Now, Ori, you’re sounding like Draco.”
“As he should! You didn’t give a flyin’ rat’s arse to my feelings just as long as you got what you wanted,” Draco barked. He was still upset that with her about his father believing he was pregnant. He’s never going to be able to live that one down.
“Sheridan…” the older twin growled.
“Alright! I brewed a Polyjuice potion and used Calhoun’s hair. Long story short, I’m pregnant and Calhoun’s the father!”
Orion was about ready to spit nails.
“Don’t, Ori. I wanted it to happen.”
He exploded.
“Are you mad? What… (shaking his head at the sheer audacity of his sister’s stupidity) …in all creation possessed you want to get bloated with a baby! You’re only fifteen! Mum and Dad have enough to deal with, without you being up-the-duff,” Orion barked at his sister. Then he rounded on Draco. “What part did you have to play in all of this?”
Holding up his hands in surrender, Draco did not want to have a fight with his friend because of his sister’s weird fetish.
“Your sister and I had been seeing each other off and on for a spell and she told me what she wanted to do with the Polyjuice. I had no issues giving her what she asked for—she can be very persuasive but I had no idea that the result of it would be her getting pregnant,” Draco explained trying his best to fight down the blush the was slowly creeping up into his cheeks.
“Wait, you mean to say that you’re the father?” Harry choked out. He was a little confused as to how could their parent’s friend be the father of Sheridan’s baby if Draco was the one to do the deed.
“No, Harry. I made the potion to-”
“Oh, bloody hell, Sheridan. Don’t tell me,” Orion said now rubbing his head to ward off the headache. “You blended your magic into the potion.”
“Yes.”
Harry looked at the twins. “What does that mean?”
“It means, Harry, that Sheridan has the ability to infuse her magic thus her desires, wants, or needs to any potion that she sees fit. Think of it as a genie in the bottle only Sheridan’s the genie and whatever she wishes for is hers,” Draco informed his brother.
“Is that even possible?” Harry asked.
“Yes. Our mother can do it, but he warned us not attempt something that was so advance because there’s a limit as to how much magic that’s put into the potion. I’ve never did it. That was a skill that I didn’t want to develop, but obviously, my dear sister somehow managed to master it. What did Mum and Dad say?”
Closing her eyes, Sheridan sighed. “Both were furious and Dad practically ran from the room. Later Mum ended up passing out. I really haven’t spoken to them except for late yesterday when Calhoun came by to proposed. Dad was a little mad.”
“You think!”
“Uncle Sirius is okay with Calhoun being your-your, you know?” Harry stuttered he couldn’t even say the word husband.
“No, Harry. I know my father. If anything, he’d have wanted to kill Calhoun then he would have killed Sheridan; but seeing that Sheridan is his second heir the thought of killing her is not an option. He went for Calhoun.”
Then another thought occurred to Orion. Menacing grey eyes looked at his blond friend. “You slept with my baby sister!”
“Now, now, Orion, I can explain,” Draco countered as he started to back pedal; he wanted to avoid a physical confrontation.
The afternoon bell rang.
They were going to be late to their next schedule of classes; however, that didn’t matter as Orion launched himself over to Draco.
The two started tussling on the grass.
“Harry, do something?” Sheridan cried out wanting them to stop fighting.
“Are you kidding? You’re joking, right? I’m not getting in the middle of that,” Harry said. “At any rate, it looks to me that Orion needs to defend your honor. And besides, serves Draco right for taking advantage of a girl’s weakness.”
Well, it takes two to tango, Sheridan thought but decided not to say that out loud and wisely kept her mouth shut.
By the end of the fight, Draco had a black eye and busted lip that he refused to have Madame Pomfrey to mend. There was no way that he was going to explain to that woman how or why he and Orion were fighting in the first place.
It was bad enough that she knew about his involvement with Sheridan in the first place. On top of that, he didn’t want his father back at the school for any reason whatsoever.
Unfortunately, Lucius was there at the school, sitting at his husband’s bedside. No one bothered to inform Harry or Draco that their mother went into labor prematurely.
oOoOoOo
The sterile scent of antiseptic filtered into his sensitive nose and he almost gagged from the overwhelming odor. He could hear the faint crying of an infant near-by and someone trying to pacify the child to no avail. The loud cries simmered down to low sobs and hiccoughs.
Indistinct foot-steps could also be heard on the other side of the closed door and low murmuring could be heard as well.
Dazed amber orbs opened.
Remus took a minute to glance about his room. He saw his mate, standing by the window with an arm full of Cassie. She finally fell asleep on his shoulder. Remus could still see the tears sliding down plump cheeks from closed eyes. He wondered briefly if there was a full moon. He knew that the baby would always get irritable around that time of the month.
Out of all of their kids, Cassie was the only one affected. Though she was not cursed with his lycanthropy, she suffered similarly at the height of a full moon.
Taking a deep breath, that alerted Regulus to his awakening.
Gently placing Cassie into the cot on the other side of the room, Regulus made his way over to his mate. His vision blurred somewhat as grey eyes took in bright almost glowing amber orbs.
“Remus,” he whispered. He laughed a little as tears flowed intermittently.
Rising a hand, Remus cupped his lover’s face. Regulus looked tired. He wondered when the last time that his mate had some proper rest, showered or shaved. However, his degenerated looks didn’t lessen Regulus’ beauty, far from it. If anything, it made Remus want him all the more.
It took several tries to get his vocal cords to obey him but he needed Regulus know. “I love you.”
The declaration caused Regulus to all out bawl.
oOo TBC oOo
A/N: Well how was that? I think it’s coming along nicely. We even got to see a little of Remus and Regulus. Just for the record, I started crying as I was typing that scene.
Has anyone guessed what Calhoun did? Will he tell Sheridan? How will the twins take their mother being pregnant too? Don’t know? Well, stay tuned for the next chapter to find out.

“I can’t, Sev,” Calhoun began to argue.
“You don’t have a choice and besides, you don’t want Sheridan to come crying to Sirius because you didn’t perform on your wedding night, now would you?”
“That’s not fair, Severus!”
“I already spoken with Sheridan and she knows not to push you for anything more than you can give,” Severus said.
