Pansy Malfoy arrived the next morning by International Floo. Bethany explained the situation to Harry as she helped him to get settled in the guest house and activate the Floo. She and Malfoy and had married three years ago when Malfoy had settled the legal matters surrounding Dumbledore's death. They had, Harry was sickened to find out, been in love for years prior to wedding, and, in Bethany's nostalgic opinion, had always seemed destined for one another.
When she left, Harry immediately called Hermione and Ron over, and that is where they now were, sitting in the sitting room in the guest house drinking tea laced with Firewhiskey.
"I'm not certain I understand why you agreed to stay in the guest house," Hermione said, setting her cup down and piercing Harry with a measuring gaze.
"Because he's daft and in love," Ron muttered. Hermione glowered at him.
"Because Bella wants me to, and Malfoy seems to think that denying his daughter as little as possible will make her a healthy, well-rounded, grounded individual," Harry snapped. "And in case you've forgotten, I've already bound myself to him, and it makes me happy to make him happy, even when it makes me miserable." Ron choked over his tea and Hermione's eyes crossed.
"Gah!" Ron said, fanning his face. "I snorted that! Do you know how bloody painful it is to get hot tea and liquor up your nose?"
"No," Harry deadpanned, while Hermione merely rolled her eyes.
"Well it's bloody painful!"
"Yes, I gather," Hermione interrupted. "But we're kind of in the middle of something, Ron." She turned back to Harry. "So, Malfoy's happily married to Pansy, and you're just going to let him treat you like a low-class mistress to appease his daughter?" Harry winced. "I don't have much to say, Harry, and what I think is not fit for words."
"I bet it's 'I told you so,'" Ron grumbled. Hermione kicked him in the ankle. He went red-faced. "I'm just saying what she's thinking," he muttered.
"Makes me feel loads better, Ron, thanks," Harry snapped. "I can forget about this ridiculous, hopeless love triangle I've got going with the two Malfoys and go about life with a heart as free as a singing bird."
"Did you know that he was married when you started all this, Harry?" Hermione asked.
"NO! Merlin, no…. I thought…." Harry scrunched his nose. "I thought he was gay, or something."
"He has a daughter mate," Ron helpfully reminded Harry.
"I know – I thought he'd divorced or never married or something."
"Divorce? That's Muggle stuff, isn't it? And wizards don't have children out of wedlock. I thought you knew."
"Apparently there's a lot of information Hogwarts curriculum doesn't cover!" Harry said.
"Well, when have you ever met a wizard who was a bastard, Harry? Even Zabini's black-widow mum can claim to be a widow eight times over!"
"Yes! Thank you! I got it! I am an idiot!"
"How many times did I have to call you one before it sunk in?" drawled Malfoy from the doorway. Harry spun around and glowered at him.
"What are you doing here, Malfoy?" Ron demanded. Harry punched him in the arm. Probably because he was tired of being hit, Ron quieted down.
"Saffron Parkinson is coming to call later today. It would be best if you went home and came back tomorrow evening. He'll get himself in a state unsuitable for Floo, probably."
"Tell him the truth, Draco," said a soft, feminine voice from behind him. Pansy gave Malfoy a shove into the room and approached Harry. For a second, Harry thought that she was going to slap him, but she did nothing of the sort. Harry's uneasy gaze drifted over Pansy's shoulder to where Malfoy lingered by the door.
"What did I tell you about lying to me?"
"What did I tell you about trusting me?" Malfoy retorted.
"Let's not fight." Pansy said. "There will be plenty of that soon enough. You-Know-Who is drawing all of his forces together. Even Lucius will be coming out of hiding. My brother has an ulterior motive for coming tonight, and he's invited others…. Death Eaters, the lot of them. They're going to try to convince Draco to stand in Severus's place, at You-Know-Who's side, because Draco is Severus's Partner." She hesitated. "You always came through at school, Harry, when someone needed you to. Even though we hated you for it, I noticed. You always seemed like a superhero to me…. Whatever bitterness there is between the three of us, please – please don't let them have Draco." Harry glanced over her shoulder again, at Malfoy's unreadable expression, then bit his lip. He nodded.
"Pansy," Malfoy said, holding out a hand for her, "you ought to rest. You don't want to put too much stress on the baby."
Pansy accepted his hand and smiled. "But I just got here. And your son is stronger than you think."
"Be that as it may, I think you'll have more than enough excitement when your brother gets here." As he watched them walk away, Harry heard a ringing in his ears.
