The Ancient
Lily flopped down from exhaustion into the armchair that had been brought into their bedroom so she could keep watch over her husband. James had been unconscious for three days now. She sighed sadly as she handed Harry over to Mitsy so the elf could put the baby down for his nap. She watched as Ivar knelt by her husband’s bedside and poured a silver liquid into his mouth a few drops at a time so as not to drown him. “I know you know what happened,” she spoke suddenly.
Ivar turned around and stared at her as is if pondering what he should say next. “I have theories.”
“Please tell me,” she pleaded. “I saw my husband out of his body. Arthur showed me the pictures he took of the inside of the Ministry building. I have Ministry officials poking around my house at all hours of the day and night. SOMEONE TELL ME SOMETHING!” she screamed, putting her face down in her hands at the sound of Harry crying.
The elf frowned at her, then sat down on a chair beside her and put his hand on her shoulder to soothe her. “Alright, I will tell you what I know.”
Lily sat straight up and fixed her attention on her grandfather-in-law. He sighed softly wondering where to begin.
“A long time ago, when Egypt was beginning to flourish, the Father had an idea. He decided to make powerful beings that would watch over and guide the humans. These beings would sort of take over his job. He made a being to govern every part of nature and life. Then he looked down at his new creations and wondered if there was anything he had forgotten. The arch angel Gabriel stepped forward and said ‘My lord, you have forgotten chaos. There cannot be peace and order without chaos.’ The Father agreed and set to work immediately. In a stroke of either genius or madness, no one can really tell which, he created a considerably powerful being. This creature was the second most powerful being he had ever created. What’s even stranger is the fact that this creature is a true balance. All souls are created with a balance between good and evil; though all other souls are made to tip more in the favor of one or the other. Not this one though. This soul was a true and perfect balance.
Things went as planned for quite some time. This being did as he was made to do and caused chaos where he thought it was needed. There was a problem though. Chaos was thought as something trivial so he was seen as a lesser god, and not given much respect; especially from his peers. After many years this began to irk Araset. Then one day it happened. The gods gathered to decide what to do with the humans. No one alive today knows exactly what happened, but Araset was treated badly and laughed at. That was the straw that broke the camel’s back so to speak. Araset became so angry that he attacked Horus. That battle was a thirty second blood bath.
Sadly, this tale doesn’t end there. Our dear Araset decided that the humans would in due time show him the respect he deserved, or be destroyed by their own ignorance. He approached leaders and gave them great powers. He told them what to do to achieve everything they wanted and more. He helped them as promised; for a while anyway. Then as each one of them was at the height of their power he would push them to just one more battle. The catch came on the dawn of that battle when he stripped their power and protection. It is said that these men could hear his laughter echoing in their ears as they died.
Naturally, all this war caused humans to end up on the endangered species list. It was bad enough that the Father had to do something about it. The most powerful being ever created, a demon with free will, was sent to kill Araset and bring back his soul. The battle lasted for four days. It is said it only lasted that long because the demon didn’t wish it to end quickly. He thought he could draw it out and play with Araset to stave off boredom. He underestimated the god of chaos, as everyone else had done. The battle ended when Araset mortally wounded him. The demon quickly reduced his enemy to a soul essence and returned him.
The Father was furious with Araset. He had painstakingly planned out everything, and a creation of his was destroying it all. Supposedly the screams of the Father could be heard all throughout the heavens. Araset should have been destroyed right then and there, but the Father gave him a choice. He would allow Araset to remain as long as he promised to behave himself. He would be sent to earth to live as a human, and he would be given the task of protecting what he had tried to destroy. He was warned that if he ever pulled such a stunt again there would be no second chances.”
The elf sighed and glanced over toward James as he finished his tale. Lily sat speechless for a moment. “You mean to say… You think James is this creature Araset?”
Ivar nodded. “All evidence points toward it yes.”
The red haired woman sat speechless for a moment. “And just exactly where did that story come from? I mean most of what you told me happened either in heaven or among the gods. How would anyone know about any of it?”
The elf took a deep breath and sat back in his chair. “The story comes from very old texts. No one knows who wrote them or why.”
“But you expect me to believe this?” Confusion and frustration overwhelmed Lily to the point where she could only laugh.
“My dear sister…” the elf sighed. “I know I can’t force you to believe anything, but take a look at what is right in front of you. You said Arthur Weasley took pictures of the aftermath with a muggle camera he had in his office did you not?”
Lily nodded, wondering what pictures had to do with anything. “And you said you saw them?”
She nodded again. “Yes, but what are you getting at?”
“What kind of soul do you think could have caused that much destruction?”
“I don’t know. I…” Lily turned her gaze away from the elf. “I don’t know how he caused that much damage. That’s why I asked you.”
“And what else do you think could cause a dementor to scream in terror? I could reproduce the sound if you like.”
“Would you just stop asking me all these questions?!” she cried out. “Please just make your point. I don’t think I can take much more of this.”
“This soul has been tracked through the ages. He has appeared during major events in Egypt, Israel, Ireland, France, and even in the American Civil war. He has either been a great figure in history, or very close to one of them. He has always exhibited great and unexplainable power. Who better to fight against and defeat this Lord Voldemort? Who better to control the cat demon that will probably be needed in order to defeat that madman? After all, I’m assuming you’re not stupid. I’m sure you’ve done your homework. Humans almost always go mad and lose control within a few years. And sadly, my kin haven’t fared much better. And yet, James has shown remarkable control. And when he was captured he did what no other witch or wizard has managed to do. He came home to you relatively unscathed. Lily, he was tortured and raped repeatedly for thirty three days! Normally rescued wizards lose their minds after about a week. After seeing all this evidence can you really deny it?”
Lily listened closely to the elf. She couldn’t disagree with his logic. “This is all a bit much,” she mumbled softly.
“I know,” Ivar nodded and gently rubbed her back. “But don’t concern yourself with it too much. Things will unfold as they were meant to. But you can take pride in the fact that you have a remarkable husband.”
She nodded and leaned to rest against his shoulder. Ivar wrapped an arm around her and held her close. He felt bad for boggling her mind like that. He hadn’t wanted to, but she had demanded that he give her some answers. Answers were what he gave her.
It was then that James’ eyes snapped open. He inhaled deeply and looked around the room trying to remember where he was and what had happened. Both Ivar and Lily turned to look at him at the exact same time. Lily squealed with joy and jumped onto the bed to give her husband a crushing hug.
“So your body and soul have re bonded?” Ivar asked with a warm smile.
“Yes, I think so,” James answered.
The elf moved over to the bed to examine his patient. “You should probably eat something.”
“Or not,” James shook his head. “I’m not very hungry.”
Ivar glared down at James who instantly retreated a little further under the covers. “Maybe a small bowl of beef broth or something.”
Ivar grinned triumphantly and headed toward the door. “I’ll get it then.”
Lily followed him, staring at him in awe. “How did you do that?” she asked once they reached the kitchen. “I always have to fight with him.”
Ivar chuckled. “I’m three hundred and sixty four years old. I’ve had quite a bit of practice.”
As he headed back towards the stairs with a steaming bowl of broth in hand, Lily reached out and grabbed his shoulder to stop him. “Ivar, I have a question I’ve been meaning to ask you.”
He stopped and turned toward her. “Yes Lily?”
“Well,” she sighed as she averted her gaze and played with her ring. “I’ve just been wondering… Will James… I mean… Will he have a life span like yours?”
Ivar shrugged. “I can’t tell you for certain. Though I think that since he is mostly human, if his life span is extended at all, it won’t be much. Are you worried that he won’t want you anymore when you’re old and gray and he still looks like he’s in his twenties?” he asked with an amused tone.
“Something like that,” she mumbled.
He laughed and hugged her tightly. “You humans worry too much. Now come, we have a patient to care for. As I said, everything will reveal itself in due time.”
