CH 29 I will tell you only once
“Just so you know, I am the only one who can apparate in or out of this manor. You are here only because I brought you tandem. You cannot exit the manor without me, the wards are strong and will prevent it. Should you wish to enter the gardens, you shall seek my permission. Many of the manor rooms are also heavily warded, so do not attempt to explore. You will eat when I tell you to eat, sleep when I tell you to sleep. In fact, everything you do while under my roof, will be either with my express permission, or because I have ordered you to do so. Is that understood?”
“Ye …yes.” She sobbed, already she felt isolated, lonely, an unwanted intruder in his life.
He snapped his fingers and a house elf appeared. “Master, you is back safe. Tilly is pleased.” the elf looked at Lou then back at her master.
“Prepare the blue room for our guest. She is to remain under supervision at all times Tilly. I trust you will make suitable arrangements.”
“Oh yes Sir. Tilly is doing that right away. Is you wanting tea?”
“Yes, in my study please Tilly.” The elf disappeared with a small pop and Severus turned to Lou again. “Put the cage down, the elf’s will see to Validus. I have an excellent owlery, he will be much happier there than sitting on a swing in your room. Follow me.”
He turned and walked along the main entrance hall and Lou followed, having to almost run to keep up.
He led her into a room with a large, ornately carved desk, a leather chair behind it and two comfortable chairs in front. To the left was a sofa and another armchair, sitting in front of a large fireplace.
“Sit.” he said, indicating the seats next to the fire. “Floo access is also denied, whether to travel, converse or send missives. I am the only one who can do so, to try would be at your peril.”
He sat in one of the armchairs and Lou sat on the edge of the sofa, wringing her hands and looking at her knees. She didn’t know what to say, what she should do, how to behave in a place like this.
Tea arrived and she watched as the elf poured the tea, first Severus’ and then Lou’s. As soon as she finished, the elf popped away.
“Thank you.” Lou told him.
“For what?”
“The tea, thank you for the tea.” She said. “Are you …erm …someone important?”
“I beg your pardon?” he asked, his expression unreadable to Lou.
“I mean, this place, it’s so big, like a palace or something. I went on a school trip once to a big house, it wasn’t as big as this though, or as posh, but it belonged to a Duke or something. Are you a Duke?”
“For your information, I am a Lord, this is my family seat, on my mothers side of course. I own this, along with a sizable estate,. I also hold several other assorted mansions, manors and estates, villa’s etcetera in various locations around the globe. And yes, I am extremely rich. Does that satisfy your curiosity? Or do you need to know more?”
“No, I just wondered if you were a Duke. I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to be nosey.”
Lou chewed her bottom lip for a while, looking round the room and feeling somewhat dwarfed. He’d called it a study, but the room seemed massive to Lou.
“I wish …I wish we were still friends, like before. It was awful when you left. I didn’t understand. What should I call you?”
“Call me?” He looked at her curiously.
“I mean, if you’re a Lord, do I call you Sir, or my Lord or something? I don’t know what I’m supposed to do.”
“Since you are a Lady in your own right, we are of equal status. You may call me Sir if you wish, but I would prefer you address me as Professor, or Professor Snape. It will make it easier when you begin school.”
“Are you going back then, to school?”
“It is undecided as yet, but it would seem likely.”
“So I can’t call you Severus any more?”
“No. It is better that you do not. I would not like you to be under the impression that things are as they were miss Black, they are not, they never can be.”
Lou said nothing. She lowered her head so he wouldn’t see her tears.
Tilly popped in to say the room was ready for the young miss and would she like to see it.
“I shall show her to her room Tilly, thank you, that will be all for tonight.”
“Sir, the miss has not brought any luggage.”
“Oh, it’s in my pocket. I’ll put it away myself if that’s okay.”
The elf looked scandalized and looked to her master for guidance.
“As I said Tilly, that will be all.” The elf popped out and Severus rose from his chair. “ If you have finished your tea, I shall show you your room. Follow me.”
Lou hadn’t drunk her tea yet, it was too hot, but she stood and followed the Professor quietly from the room.
When they entered the hall, she noticed Validus was gone.
“Professor, where’s Validus?”
“In the owlery, as I told you he would be.”
“Will I be able to go see him tomorrow, I want to send a letter.”
“No, you will not have time.” He led her up a wide curved, white marble staircase.
Lou had never seen anything like it, she thought it was beautiful. But she was upset the she couldn’t see Validus, he was the only one here she would have to talk to and he’d been taken away.
She was taken down a long corridor, portraits on both sides of the walls whispering as they passed. Lou tried not to catch the eye of any of them, in case they did a Mrs Black and started screaming at her. She didn’t think she could take that right now.
Eventually he stopped, opened a door and held it as she stepped through.
“This is your room for the duration of your stay. One of the elf’s will come and bring you down for breakfast at seven am. From there you will be taken to the schoolroom, where you shall resume your lessons. There will be a break at twelve for lunch, then lessons will resume. I have several elf’s who are educated to a high standard and are capable of teaching you, you will do as they instruct. At five pm you will return here until it is time for dinner at six. Once again, an elf will come for you. After dinner, you will be expected to retire for the night. You will dress only in robes, I do not wish to see you in muggle attire at any time. Goodnight miss Black.”
He closed the door and was gone.
She stood looking at the door, allowing the tears to fall freely down her cheeks now. Then the suddenly the door opened again, taking her by surprise and she jumped back.
Severus took in her tears and hardened himself to them. He had to, this was just as difficult for him as it was for her.
“I almost forgot, the Headmaster will be arriving tomorrow afternoon. We shall be increasing the amount of magic you currently have, and do all of your crying tonight, I do not wish to see tears streaming down your face every time we dine.”
He closed the door again, leaving her alone.
This time the sobs racked her body harshly, the room was beautiful but Lou couldn’t appreciate it. She was devastated, lonely, and friendless. She’d hoped that maybe she and Severus would at least be friends while they were here, but it looked like the only time she’d see him would be at meals. If he was as cold and hard then, as he was tonight, she’d never be able to cope with it. Even Validus was taken away from her.
Lou pulled the trunks from her pocket and enlarged them. Using the spell Hermione taught her, she waved her wand and her things flew to the drawers and wardrobe, folding and hanging themselves neatly.
She found a bathroom attached to the room, stripped and took a shower. She paid special attention to her leg. Ever since she’d knocked it on the kitchen table, it had become sore and inflamed. Now it weeped and she tried to keep in clean. She grabbed a nightgown from the dresser and climbed into the massive bed.
It was high and she almost had to jump to get on it. The mattress was deep and soft, seeming to wrap around her, the comforter was also soft, and billowy. Lou almost disappeared in the bed. Turning on her side, she cried herself to sleep.
When she woke next morning, she used the bathroom and came back into the bedroom to find an elf waiting for her.
“Good morning miss. I am Cassia and I will be your elf while you is here. Your robes is laid out ready and the master is waiting for you. It is best not to keep the master waiting.”
Snapping her fingers, Cassia had Lou dressed in an instant, another snap and her now shoulder length hair was neatly pulled back in a small pony tail.
Catching sight of herself in the mirror, Lou thought the pony tail looked more like a shaving brush and pulled the band off, letting her hair fall back to her shoulders.
“This way miss.” Cassia said, opening the door, and holding it for Lou to step through.
As she did, Cassia snapped her fingers again. “Cassia, I don’t like it, my hair’s too short for a proper pony tail.” She complained, pulling the band off again.
“Masters orders. You is to be tidy.”
“I don’t care what the master orders are, I’ll cut my hair off if you do it again.” She huffed, waiting for the elf to lead the way.
“The master will not be pleased. You is getting Cassia in trouble miss.”
“No I wont. I’ll tell him I took it out and that you couldn’t stop me.”
Cassia led her downstairs and across the main entrance hall to a large wooden door. Cassia knocked and waited until a deep voice called “Enter.”
‘Bloody Hell. This is ridiculous.’ Lou thought. The door opened and Lou marched into the room, disgruntled at all the formality.
“I can’t do this.” She stated as soon as she saw Severus seated at the top of a long dining table.
“I beg your pardon.” He exclaimed, lowering his cup and lifting his eyes from the newspaper.
“All this. “You will do this, you will do that. Knocking on doors and being told what to wear, how to have my hair. It’s ridiculous.”
“Is that so?” he asked, his eyes glittering darkly at her.
She faltered a little at the look, but determined to hang onto her resolve. “Yes it is. I don’t see why I have to follow orders like this. I didn’t ask to come here and you said last night that we’re equal status, so why do I have to be bossed about?”
“Sit down, I will tell you this only once.”
Lou sat at the opposite end of the table to him, mainly because Cassia was holding out a chair close to the Professor and Lou didn’t want to sit that close to him at the moment.
She looked at him, waiting for him to say something.
“As I have already mentioned, we are equal in status, only as far as titles go. In this house, I am master of all you survey, and that includes you. Just as you do not wish to be here, I do not want you here. I would prefer not to see you at all, or have you in my life. You are a burden on my free time. As for doing as you are told, you have little or no say in the matter. You brought this unfortunate arrangement upon yourself, and me I might add. If you are not content, that is hardly my problem. Now eat, you have classes in half an hour.”
He turned his eyes back to the paper and ignored her.
Lou didn’t know whether to be angry or upset, or even laugh at the sheer audacity of the man in front of her.
“You know, I believed you. When you said you were my friend, I believed you. When you said you wouldn’t hurt me, I believed you. When you said you cared, I believed you. Everything you ever told me, I believed it. I trusted you. When you finally said you wasn’t coming back, I figured you were trying to protect me. You told the Headmaster as much last night, I heard you. I wanted to help you, that’s why I hid, why I listened, I didn’t know you were gonna be there. It was the hardest thing not to run to you when I saw the state you were in, but it made me all the more determined to help get rid of this Voldemort. I told you I don’t want to be here, but I never said I didn’t want to be near you. Now you say I’m a burden to you, that you don’t even want to see me. Why did you make me trust you? Why did you make me think you cared? Why did you lie to me?”
Without waiting for him to reply, Lou turned and left the room. She headed up the stairs at a half run, half blinded by tears, she turned down a corridor. That corridor led to another and another. Before she knew it she was lost.
Portraits were whispering to each other while they watched her.
“Excuse me, can you tell me how to get to my room? I’m lost.”
Now they stared openly at her, but none of them offered any directions.
“Please, I’m already in a load of trouble, I think it’s called the blue room. Which way do I go?”
“This way.” Said a dark voice directly behind her.
Lou let out a squeal, startled by the closeness of the voice. She spun round to see Severus standing in front of her and swallowed hard. “Err …you found me then?”
“I can always find you in this manor. Nothing and no one is beyond my reach in my own home. Remember that.”
Taking hold of her arm, he apparated them back to the dining room, led her to a chair near his own and forced her to sit.
“Now eat your breakfast, you have a busy day ahead of you. Any more displays of behaviour such as I have just been forced to witness, I may remember that I still owe you a damned good spanking.”
Lou felt like telling him to fuck off, but she daren’t, especially with the mood he was in now. Instead, she sat and ate her cereal, followed by a plate of bacon and eggs.
All the time she was thinking ‘fucking bastard, shit face, arsehole.’ Every foul mouthed word she’d ever heard, from pratt to twat, she applied to him in her mind. ‘You might be master of all you survey, but your not my master, so there.’ She thought.
When she was done, Severus stood and told her to follow him.
She did and they were once again in his study.
“You have spunk, I’ll give you that.” he told her while taking a straight backed chair from against the wall and placing it in the middle of the room.
Lou couldn’t help giggling when he said spunk. It just seemed so hilarious coming from him, her giggles turned to chortles.
“Something I said amuses you?” he asked her.
Lou pressed a hand over her mouth, trying to muffle the sound as she nodded.
“And what might that be?”
“You …you said spunk.” She told him, doubling over with laughter now. She really couldn’t help herself and her eyes watered as she tried to control her laughter.
It was one of those incongruously stupid things that seemed to hit a certain spot within, and you are forced to laugh whether you want to or not. A kind of hysterical reaction possibly, to all the fraught nerves and upset in her life recently.
Severus sat on the newly positioned chair, his lips twitching involuntarily as he waited for her to regain some composure.
“Sorry …ca …cant help …it.” She said.
When Lou was still laughing after a couple of minutes, he waved his hand and said; “Reles humor”. (Release humour.)
Lou suddenly didn’t find it funny any more and stopped laughing. She wiped her eyes, sniffed and stood up straight. “Sorry, I don’t know what came over me.” She told him, wondering now why they were in his study.
“Well, do you have anything to say in your defence?”
“What? My defence? I don’t understand.”
“Come here.” He said, indicating she stand beside him. “You do remember what I told you at breakfast, that I would punish you should you, not tow the line, so to speak?”
“Yes.” She answered warily. “But I haven’t done anything. I mean I laughed, but I didn’t mean to. I wont laugh again if you don’t want me to.”
Next she knew she was sprawled across his lap.
“It is not your laughter that offends me.”
“Then what? Please, I haven’t done anything.” She cried as her robes were lifted. “What are you doing? Stop it.”
“Indeed, nothing.” WHACK
“OWW “What was that for?”
“Try fucking bastard.
WHACK
OOH “Don’t.”
“Try shit face.”
WHACK
OOCH “I didn’t say those things.”
“Try arsehole.”
WHACK WHACK WHACK
“OWOWOW I didn’t, I…”
WHACK WHACK WHACK WHACK WHACK
Severus continued to the count of twenty. “Stand up.” he barked.
By this time Lou was nothing but a sobbing heap on his knee. She struggled to pull herself up and he offered no assistance.
“Why? I never said a word.” She sobbed. She put her hands to her bottom but it was so painful she could bear to touch it.
“You thought it sufficiently loud for me to hear, that was enough. From now on, you will mind your thoughts, as well as your mouth and actions. Understood?” He shouted the last, making her jump away from him.
Lou was trembling with pain, fear, humiliation and rage.
“I hate you. It‘s not fair. I can‘t help what I think. I have rights you know, you cant do this.” She cried, dashing to stand behind the sofa when he stood to face her.
“Good. It is better you feel that way. Perhaps it will serve to prevent you from interfering in my life. As for your rights, as a minor, you have none. Fairness has nothing to do with it and I can do with you as I please. Should I see fit to punish you, as on this occasion, then I shall do so. Now leave, you have lessons to attend.”
He turned his back on her and went to sit behind his desk. He didn’t even look up as he waved his hand at the door. It opened and he pointed a finger at it while studying a parchment in front of him.
Lou edged her way round the study until she reached the door, then shot through it, jumping again when it slammed behind her.
Tears coursed down her cheeks as she stood, wishing she was anywhere but here.
“Time for your lessons miss.” Cassia told her.
With no fight left in her, Lou followed the elf through yet another door in the vast hall and into a large classroom.
It was sectioned into four different areas. Cassia explained what the different areas consisted of.
Potions, charms and transfiguration, ancient runes, arithmancy and history of magic, and the fourth section, defence against the dark arts and the dark arts themselves.
“Herbology and care of magical creatures will be taken in the grounds. This is Spike, he will be teaching you arithmancy and ancient runes today.”
Cassia disappeared with a soft pop and Lou was left to take lessons from Spike the house elf. She didn’t mind that, but when she was told to sit down she found she couldn’t. Spike allowed her to spend the lesson on her feet. He didn’t ask her why she couldn’t sit and Lou had a sneaky suspicion that he already knew why.
By lunchtime her leg hurt from the constant standing and she was limping badly when she entered the dining room again.
She didn’t dare complain, but now she didn’t know whether to sit or stand when she reached the table.
