LEECH
Chapter 29
“Don’t mind the look of this lot Kathy, their minds are on their stomachs as usual. I don’t suppose you had time to make anything did you, I’ve been run off my feet these last few days what with one thing and another and this lot are close to mutiny at the lack of visible sustenance.”
“Yes Molly, Severus has it all in his pocket. You should have seen what they did, it was really clever.” She went on to explain about the reducing of her food, while Molly retrieved the box from Severus and placed it on a shelf in the pantry.
“No point letting this lot know about it yet, the meetings about to start and no one will listen to a word that’s said if there’s food to be had.”
Several pairs of eyes followed the two women as they hid the box away, but none dared follow the indomitable Molly Weasley or suggest she put the food out early.
Back in the kitchen Kathy noticed several faces she’d not seen before, and some she had.
When Sirius gave her a leering grin and waggled his eyebrows at her, she gave him a tight lipped smile and turned her gaze elsewhere.
The seats were all taken, many having to stand against the walls and worktops, but a redheaded man stood and offered his seat. Kathy thanked him and sat down next to two other redheads, twins, on her left, on her right was the sandy haired man named Remus Lupin.
“Hello Kathy, how nice to see you again, you look well.”
“Mr Lupin, nice to see you too. You on the other hand don’t look wel, have you been ill, you seem awfully tired?”
Remus would normally have felt insulted at such a remark, but the obvious concern on her features told him she was genuinely worried about him and he was grateful for it. “I have been off colour for a few days yes, but I am recovering nicely thank you.”
They didn’t get chance to speak further as Albus called the meeting to order.
Kathy let her gaze wander round the room while Albus brought everyone up to date with events since their last meeting. When others gave detailed accounts of recent Death Eater attacks she blanched, it all sounded too familiar to her and she tried to block out what was being said.
“Are you alright, is this too much for you?” A voice whispered in her ear.
“A bit yeah, but obviously I’m not the only one that’s suffered because of this Voldemort, so I’ll survive. Thanks for asking.”
Remus nodded and they continued to listen.
Severus had given details on a series of possible raids that were planned for the end of March on a small wizarding community of the west coast. Apparently they and the muggle community where mingling on a regular basis, mixed marriages were frequent there, and Voldemort wanted them all assassinated. The Order was hoping to evacuate the whole village before that happened, but unfortunately some of the muggles refused to leave their homes.
Just before they were dismissed and the meeting brought to an end, Albus reminded them all about tomorrows ball and hoped that the majority of them were able to attend. He told them it was to be Kathy’s first appearance in the wizarding community and that she was to be watched carefully.
Kathy turned beet red. ‘Watched? Carefully? Why?’ Fortunately Molly attracted her attention and she stood and made her way to the pantry to help with the food. As Molly enlarged the plates, trays and dishes, Kathy took them into the kitchen and deposited them on the table. Most of the plates emptied before she could replace them with fresh ones and she and Molly were hard put to find anything to eat themselves.
“Here, I saved this for you.”
She spun to find Severus holding out a plate of food for her. “Oo thanks. Where did it all go?”
He smirked and led her to where Molly was pouring cups of tea.
“I told you there was no filling this lot.” Molly said as she passed her a cup of tea.
“I know you did but… are they always like this?”
“Always.”
Severus sat beside her at the table where she started on a sandwich. A moment later the redhead she sat next to during the meeting came over and introduced himself.
“Evening Professor. Mrs Ripley, don’t suppose you remember me, Charlie Weasley. We met at the last meeting.”
“Charles.” Severus acknowledge, clenching his jaw and almost shaking with rage since he knew what was coming next.
“Hello Charlie, I think I remember you, there was so much happening that night, it’s sort of a blur.”
“Can’t say I’m surprised. So, you looking forward to tomorrow night? Mum said you wasn’t too sure about it.”
“I’m not to be honest. A jive, the twist, just regular rock ‘n roll is more my style.”
“Really? Mum used to make Bill and me jive with her when we were kids, err, I mean sometimes. Oh hell I’m making a mess of this.” His ears turned bright red, much to Severus’ amusement.
Kathy wondered what on earth was wrong with Charlie.
“Kathy I’m trying to ask you if I may accompany you to the ball tomorrow night. Phew.”
Kathy stared at him stunned. “Oh Charlie, thank you for asking but, well I’m going with Severus. Maybe we can have a dance though, if you want to that is.”
Charlie gave her his most endearing smile. “How can I be too disappointed with an offer like that, I’d love to dance with you.” He clicked his tongue as he gave Severus a cheeky wink and moved away.
Severus was appalled that the cheeky lad had dared to wink at him, especially after having the audacity to ask his date for a dance. He bridled when he noticed Lupin looking their way and when Minerva called him over to talk with several members about the planned evacuation, he kept one eye on Kathy, his hackles rising when the werewolf made his way over to sit with her.
He hardly listened to what the others were saying, answering with grunts and the odd mumble when he deemed it necessary, though he hadn’t a clue what he was replying to. Eventually they realised that the Potions Master was not paying attention to them and moved away to continue their discussion.
It took Severus several moments before he realised he was nodding his head to an empty space.
By the time he returned to Kathy, Lupin was gone and Black was moving towards them.
Fortunately Lupin caught his arm and whispered something in his ear.
Severus smirked at the dark look he received from Black. Obviously Lupin had told his friend that Kathy was already fixed up with a date for the ball. And with whom.
