He had been five when he had been turned. Only five. A child. His entire life was changed for the worse within minutes.
Remus had had nightmares of that night for years. They lessened some but he would never forget when Fenrir Greyback had entered his room and attacked him. The following years were filled with random healers, potions, tears, and fear. They were filled of being locked in the dark every month as he cried for his parents, of hearing them cry on the other side as they could do nothing for him. He had been a child and had been forced to grow up far before his years.
He had been lucky to be allowed in Hogwarts and even luckier to make the friends he did. Remus honestly had no clue how things would have turned out for him without them; probably a lot less shenanigans most likely. They made the transformation bearable after they became animagi. The three of them never missed a moon even after they had all graduated. Remus had felt things were going good until tragedy struck. He was left alone again and grieving. The transformations had been worse than ever before.
Even after Sirius returned to him, even with the use of Wolfsbane, the transformation just hurt. There was nothing they could do to prevent that. He never could hold a job longer than a couple months before someone found out and sacked him. He would be eternally grateful to Dumbledore for his trust and faith in him.
Remus would have never believed that his being a werewolf could end up like this.
Water splashed around him, his paw sunk into mud leaving a perfect imprint, as he raced through the forest. Cobalt raced beside him, nose even with his flank. This form was like nothing Remus could have imagined. It was large and strong. How he could shift into something so large instantaneously and without pain still blew his mind. Fast and agile, this form could easily keep up with Harry and Edge even at their fastest. Remus felt a rush and thrill he had never experienced before.
Edge dropped down in front of them for a split second before he was back in the trees. The vampire tended to stay in the trees when he could, leaping from limb to limb like a flying squirrel. It made him infuriatingly hard to catch. Cobalt growled and jumped just narrowly missing the vampires foot as he jumped away. A hearty laugh echoed from behind them. Moony skidded to a stop and dashed back the way he came Cobalt close on his heels.
A hand landed firmly on his head pushing it to the ground. His face slid through the mud before the weight lifted. Moony looked up to see Edge somersault over him to land daintily on his feet only to dodge Cobalt a split second later. Moony shook the mud from his face, standing back onto his feet. Edge flitted around Cobalt like it was nothing turning the dark wolf in circles. Moony couldn’t help but laugh at the frustrated growls coming from his mate and the amused laughs from Edge.
*Damn it. Stay still.*
Edge laughed as he dodged the wolf again. “Nope.” He called and he was gone again.
Cobalt collapsed into a sit. *I give up man. You’re too fast.*
Edge was chuckling when he jumped back down from the trees. “You’re no fun, Cobalt. How else are you going to build up your stamina?”
Moony watched the bonded pair as they interacted. They seemed to have forgotten him for the moment. It was a frequent thing since the Guardian bond was formed between them. Sirius spent a lot of time with Edge keeping the bond balanced between the two canines he held within him. Sirius never talked about it, but Remus could tell that his mate was struggling to find the right balance between Cobalt and Padfoot. It had become quickly apparent that he needed to give each time to stretch their legs at regular intervals or things got difficult.
The two seemed well enough distracted. Moony pounced. He had only meant to get Edge but Cobalt moved just enough at the last minute that Edge ended up pinned between them. Edge looked up at Moony shock written on his face. Moony gave a wolfy grin while Cobalt nosed the vampires side with a chuckle.
*Got you.* They chorused just before they shifted.
Sirius lay on his side propped up on his arms. Edge was resting on the ground perpendicular with his head against Sirius’ ribs. Remus held himself on hands and knees looking down at the vampire. A grin spread across Edge’s face before the vampire laughed.
“There is no way you two planned that. That was a fluke.”
Both Guardians laughed with him. Sirius poked him in the side making Edge squirm. “You can’t prove we didn’t.”
Remus rolled to lie beside Edge resting his head against Sirius’ hip. Sirius shifted enough to settle on his back but not enough to disturb the two using him as a pillow.
It was getting warmer in the change of the seasons. The nights were still chilly enough to warrant extra coverings but the three currently watching the leaves rustle above them could care less.
Remus closed his eyes with a content sigh as a soft breeze brushed over the three of them. Harry had lessons tonight so had not been able to join them. It was doubtful he would have anyway. Severus had recovered from the last meeting but still acted off some days. Remus had yet to figure out what was wrong with the man and even Sirius had trouble determining the cause. The man smelled the same to them even though Harry swore something was different. Edge had mentioned a slight difference but the vampire did not seem overly concerned. At least Severus didn’t look like death warmed over anymore. Perhaps it was just a bug that he was still recovering from. Harry hadn’t seemed convinced the last time Remus had talked to him.
Edge sat up and stretched. Remus watched him with a soft smile. The vampire had come a long way from when they had first met. It was nice to see him so relaxed. Things had been touch and go for the first little bit, especially when the vampire decided he wanted to feed from Sirius, but the vampire knew how to be respectful of the wolf. Edge never pushed his luck and never pushed for more than what was offered. It became clear quickly that the vampire genuinely felt remorse for turning Harry and was doing his best to atone for it. He cared for Harry a great deal and had even come to care for all of them as well. Edge never said so but Remus could pick it up in his scent and in his actions. They had become his family just as Edge had become part of theirs.
The wind shifted and brought a new scent to them. Edge tensed but did not move. Remus and Sirius sat up sharply. Dante was close but was staying out of sight. The scent disappeared shortly after, signaling that the vampire had moved on. Clearly he had not meant for them to know he was there.
Sirius growled under his breath. “He’s watching us.”
“Yes.” Edge said softly.
“What the bloody hell does he want?”
Edge pulled his knees up and rested his arms over them. He shook his head. “No idea.”
Sirius continued to grumble. Remus kept his attention on Edge. The vampire had closed up. Remus scooted a bit closer.
“If he’s reporting to snake face…”
“He wouldn’t.”
“Even you admitted he had changed, Edge.”
“I know.” Edge glanced at Remus from the corner of his eyes making Remus freeze a moment. He didn’t look away from the vampire. “But he hasn’t changed that much.”
Sirius was up pacing now. Remus moved closer until he was sitting with his side touching Edge’s. The vampire had been hesitant with touch at first, but the more comfortable they all got with each other, the more Remus noted that Edge craved their touch. Edge simply turned his head to look at him. Remus hated the sadness and lost look his blue eyes held.
“Have you not been able to talk with him?” He asked softly.
Edge sighed. “No.” He turned back to looking straight ahead. “I’ve tried but he always gets away. He’s avoiding me apparently.”
Sirius must have caught on for he carefully sat on the vampires other side. “Any guesses as to why? I mean, you two spent a good amount of time together over the holidays.”
Edge shrugged. “Not really. He acted strange then too, honestly.” He rubbed his hands over his face. “I can’t worry about him right now. I have Harry to be concerned with and now Severus is being weird…”
“Thought Snape was okay now?” Sirius questioned.
Edge sighed obviously becoming frustrated. His hands fell from his face. “He is. Maybe. I don’t know.” A hand came up to fist into his hair. “He does smell off, but it’s not anything that makes me feel overly worried, but Harry is stressing about it constantly and he won’t tell me why.”
Remus pressed closer to the vampire in an offer of support and felt Sirius do the same on the other side. “Harry has been through a lot. This is also the first time he’s had to deal with someone he cares about being smack dab in the middle of this war. Severus’ roll in this is not an easy one.”
“I’m aware.”
Remus ignored the interruption. “With Greyback being at snake faces side now I’m sure Severus is just keeping his shields in place more often than he normally would.”
“That would mean Snape is nervous about something.” Sirius added.
“Like Greyback isn’t enough?”
“It does make sense.” Edge said letting his hand fall back down. “I’ll just have to keep a close eye on things to make sure nothing gets out of hand.” His voice sounded so weary and tired.
“We.”
Edge looked at Remus confused. “What?”
“We will have to keep an eye on things. You’re not alone, Edge. We can help.”
“Exactly.” Sirius nudged Edge a bit making Edge turn to him. “Besides isn’t that what we are technically for? To be your eyes during the day?”
Edge blinked. “Well, you are.” He motioned to Cobalt before turning back to Remus. “But you are bonded to Harry.”
Remus nodded. “Yes, but isn’t it also our job to protect the two of you?” Remus smiled. “Besides, your family, and family watches out for each other.”
Edge blinked multiple times. Remus noted the watery appearance of his eyes. He rested his head on Edge’s shoulder. Sirius did the same. Both of them pressed the vampire close between them.
“Thanks guys.” Remus heard Edge whisper into the breeze.

“Harry, you are most likely over thinking this.” Hermione stated calmly from her cushion in the floor. “Professor Snape is looking better each day. It really does appear like he just came down sick for a bit.”
Harry sighed stretching out in his place in front of the fire. Ron sat in the cushioned chair while Draco sprawled out on the sofa the Room of Requirement had provided them with. Things were still touch and go as far as Ron and Draco were concerned but they were sticking to the truce for now.
“Maybe.” Harry mumbled unsure. “I just can’t help feeling as though something else is wrong.”
Ron sat forward resting his elbows on his knees. “Seriously, mate, Snape appears fine in class; still his snarky, charming self that one. I don’t understand what has you so worried.”
“I know. He acts fine and looks fine. Of course he does. Even his scent is back to pretty much normal.” Harry ran a hand through his hair frustrated. “There is just this feeling that won’t go away…”
“Good grief, Potter. Severus is fine.” Draco drawled.
“Well, excuse me for being worried.” Harry snapped returning to a sitting position.
Draco sat up turning to face the Gryffindor. “Worried? You are an anxious mess, over what? A silly little bug that has run its course? The rest of us still get sick. We are human. It happens.”
“I know that. That has nothing to do with it.”
“Bloody hell, Harry, just tell us then.” Ron jumped in. “Something has got you running in circles. We have helped you with worse things, mate. Give us credit here.”
Harry looked down at the floor. Hermione moved so she could sit beside him placing a comforting hand on his shoulder.
“We know you are worried, Harry.” Ron and Draco snorted resulting in a glare from the witch. “But we can’t help if we don’t know what it is about.” Hermione paused. “Has Professor Snape said or done something that has caused it?”
“It’s nothing. He said it was nothing.”
“Well it is obviously something to you.”
Harry turned to look at his bushy haired friend. Her face was calm but her eyes held the concern she felt for her friend.
“I…” Harry looked back down. “He…”
“Out with, Potter.”
A pillow flew through the air to smack into Draco’s face. “Shut it, Malfoy. Let the man get his thoughts straight.”
Draco gripped the pillow between his hands while he glared at the offender. “Keep your pillows to yourself, Weasley.” He sneered throwing the pillow back at Ron with the same force.
Hermione rolled her eyes. “Go on, Harry, ignore those two idiots.”
“Hey!” “Oi!” was chorused.
Harry couldn’t help but smile softly but only for a brief second. “He… he asked if I would turn him.”
Silence. It seemed to stretch for ages.
“Wait, what?” Draco was the first to speak. What the hell was his godfather thinking?
“Harry, are you sure?” Hermione questioned softly.
Harry nodded. “Yeah, I mean, it wasn’t directly ‘will you turn me’ but it was close enough. He said he didn’t mean it but I heard the tone in his voice and saw the look on his face. He was serious about it even though he told me not to worry about it afterwards.”
“Damn, mate, that’s, kind of intense.”
“How can he expect me not to worry about it?” Harry continued. “Does he really want to be turned or was it hypothetical? Should I be worried about the reasoning behind him asking in the first place? Is he really worried he’s going to die that much? Does he know he’s going to die or something?”
“Whoa, Potter, slow down. Nobody has said anything about any one dying.” Draco slid to the floor beside his new found friend. “Take deep breaths will you.”
“Snape has to think about that though, doesn’t he?” Ron looked pensive. “He is a spy and a big one at that. The man is in the inner circle, right? He gets found out and I’m fairly certain Who-Know-Who isn’t going to let that slide.”
Harry stared at his friend wide eyed and no longer breathing. Both Hermione and Draco glared at the red head.
“Not helping, Ronald.” Hermione hissed.
“But it’s still fact, Hermione.”
“I know that but Harry is already worried enough without the reminder.”
Ron slid to the edge of the chair. “But that’s just it, Hermione, maybe the reminder is needed.” He sighed, exasperated. “I’m pretty sure Snape doesn’t want to die no more than the rest of us do. The only problem is that his position increases that chance exponentially.”
“Using big words, Weasley? Might want to watch that.”
Ron glared at Draco but continued. “It could be that Snape is just running through his options. You can’t tell me that the man doesn’t plan for things far in advance. He kind of has to if he wants to come out of each meeting he goes to alive.”
Draco patted Harry on the shoulder to get his attention. Harry looked at the blonde but still refused to breathe. It was very disconcerting.
“Hard to say it, but Weasley is right. That does not mean that Severus thinks his life is forfeit right now, though.”
“But…”
Draco shook his head. “Obviously, with the way you are torn up about this, you turning him is not an option, but it was one that Severus probably felt he needed to see about. It doesn’t have to mean anything more than that.”
“But Professor Snape asking to be turned in the first place is a big thing.” Hermione argued. “For him to even ask means he has thought about it.”
“All that means is that he cares enough for Harry to try to think of a way to stay with him.” Draco countered. “It doesn’t mean he’s going to be killed.”
“He cares about me that much?” Harry whispered as though in shock.
Ron snorted. Draco rolled his eyes. “Of course he bloody cares about you, you dim wit.” The blond gave Harry a smack on the back of the head for good measure.
“Draco!” Hermione admonished as Harry rubbed the back of his head.
“It’s okay, Hermione.” Harry said. “Severus did say he was mine. I just thought it was because of the bond or something.”
“Even we can see that Professor Snape cares for you, Harry. I do think it goes beyond the bond though. Edge said that the bond only draws the two of you together to ensure that other vampires can’t steal your food source. It doesn’t sound to me like it would affect his emotions that badly. Plus, from what I understood, the bond technically won’t allow him to turn for the same reason. The fact that he is even thinking about it means he’s going past the bond, Harry.” Hermione finally took a breath.
Harry thought for a minute. “What if there was another bond though? One that overrides the Pair Bond?”
“The only bond that overrides the Pair Bond is the Mate Bond.”
“And you know that how, Hermione?” Ron teased. “Thought there wasn’t much information on Animalis in the library.”
Hermione blushed but held her head high. “I got the information from the source if you must know. It’s not my fault I’m the only one that thinks to ask Edge these questions.”
Ron scowled. Draco smirked. “Jealous there, Weasel?”
“I’m not!” Ron denied even though his face had turned as red as his hair. Hermione looked away still blushing.
“Mate bond?” Harry nudged Hermione to get their conversation back on track.
Hermione sighed. “He didn’t have much to say on it, just that it was a bond that overrides any other bond. Much like a werewolf mating bond, it binds the two together for life.”
“Do you think…?”
Hermione shook her head. “It can only be formed completely between two vampires, Harry. With a human it would only be half complete.”
“How would that change anything?” Draco asked curiously. “It would still be a Mate Bond wouldn’t it?”
“I honestly don’t know.” Hermione looked upset to admit it. “Edge didn’t have much to tell me on the subject. He acted like he wanted to avoid it all together honestly.”
“Do you think he and his Sire have a Mate Bond?” Ron asked. “That could be why he avoided the topic. It doesn’t seem like he and Dante are getting along to well at the moment.”
Harry scoffed. “Or for the past century. If they had a Mate Bond, would Dante really have been able to leave Edge like that?”
“I wouldn’t think so but who knows. Maybe if it was only half complete but it would only be speculation at this point.” Hermione looked thoughtful before looking sharply at Harry. “Why are you asking about other bonds, Harry? What have you done now?”
Pink colored Harry’s cheeks. “Nothing.”
“Harold James Potter.”
Ron gave Harry a sympathetic look.
“What have you done to my godfather now?” Draco wrinkled his nose. “On second thought, given the topic, I don’t think I want to know.”
“I…well…I mean…” Harry stuttered his cheeks still pink. Harry was glad he hadn’t fed since yesternight or his cheeks would really be red right now. “I may have fed from his inner thigh.” He whispered.
“Oh, nope.” Draco jumped from the floor. “I’m out on this one. I don’t even want to think about why you were there.”
Ron laughed at the blonde who looked a tad bit green. “Never had anyone between your legs, Ferret?”
“Entirely not the point, Weasel.” Draco glared. “That is my godfather and some images…just…no.” Draco flopped back on the couch and covered his ears. “Continue.”
Hermione let a soft chuckle escape before she became serious again. “That doesn’t have to mean anything, Harry. Many vampires with intimate partners feed from there.” She blushed. “I’ve read the orgasms can be pretty intense.”
Ron gaped. “Just what have you been reading, Hermione?”
Hermione huffed crossing her arms. “Nothing like what you are thinking, Ronald, but even girls can get curious and have urges.”
Ron blushed to match his hair and looked away. Draco cackled crossing his arms over his stomach.
“Oh, come on, Weasel. Just how much of a virgin are you?”
Ron blushed harder if it was even possible. He threw the pillow at Draco again who just held it over his face as he laughed. Harry laughed despite himself.
Hermione rolled her eyes in annoyance. “Boys. Seriously.” She smacked Harry’s shoulder. “Why would that bother you?”
“Huh?” Harry looked at her still smiling. He took a deep breath. “Oh, well, it scarred.”
“It scarred? From one bite?”
Harry nodded. “That’s why I was curious. None of my other bites scarred.”
Hermione turned thoughtful ignoring the other two in the room still heckling each other. “I wonder if it’s just a claiming mark. Professor Snape is still human so it couldn’t be a mating mark…could it?”
“What do you mean?”
“Mating bonds are made between two vampires, Harry, which means both partners bite and mark each other, but with half the set being human…I’m honestly not sure, but it may remain a claiming mark.” Hermione sighed frustrated. “I wish Edge would have been willing to give me more information.”
“He admitted to me that he doesn’t know everything. Dante disappeared on him before he could learn it all. Most of what he knows is what he’s experienced.” Harry shrugged. “If he’s never had a mating bond he may only know what he told you.”
“If that’s true, then it’s very likely Edge is part of an unfinished mating bond. It could explain a few things, actually.”
“Makes you wonder who marked who.”
“The only way to know would be to ask.” Hermione said softly. “And I am sure Edge won’t be super willing to talk about it.”
“Maybe if the right person, or people, asked he might.” Harry said thoughtfully. At Hermione’s questioning look he continued. “Edge has gotten real close with Sirius and Remus. He might talk to them about it.”
Hermione rolled her eyes. “Or you could express your concerns about the bite scar and everything else. You know, actually talk to him.”
Harry scratched the back of his head and shrugged. “Or that.”
Harry wasn’t entirely sure how he would even go about bringing it up, but Hermione did have a point. Edge was usually pretty open with him. Maybe he should just suck it up and ask his Sire about all of this instead of just letting his worries flow rampant through his mind. Harry took a deep breath and let it out slow. He felt so nervous at even the thought of having the conversation, that he was pretty sure it was going to be a nightmare in reality.
