As Sirius tumbled backwards and disappeared, his grey eyes wide with shock, Lyra’s body finally unfroze and she sprang towards where mere moments ago he had been – but a strong pair of arms wrapped around her from behind.
Lucius held her back as every head except theirs turned towards the veil, the stilled hush seeming to confirm the worst of her fears. Sirius was nowhere to be seen, and working in the Ministry she had heard enough rumours to know what falling through the veil meant for the man she loved beyond all reason.
Twisting around to face her captor, Lyra unleashed a loud howl that erupted from the pit of her churning stomach as she beat her fists furiously against his chest. “Let me go to him, Lucius!” she begged, impossible though she knew her plea was. “Oh gods, let me go to him!”
Lucius’s face contorted as his arms tightened further around her. “He’s gone, pet. He’s gone to where you cannot follow him; I can’t even let you try.”
Hot, stinging tears cascaded relentlessly down her face as gut-wrenching sobs racked her body, for she knew he spoke the truth.
Sirius was gone.
Nothing she could do would bring him back. She and Leo would never see him again, and with each passing moment the iron band around her heart constricted further until she could barely even breathe under the weight of the agony that now consumed her. Burying her face in Lucius’s robes to block out the horror around her, she shook from head to toe as a cacophony of shouts and screams erupted to echo around the chamber. How could it be that the world was still going on around her when Sirius was gone? None of it made sense, not any more.
Lucius held Lyra still, even as he slowly began to guide her away from the dais. She could not even summon up the will to fight against him, for without Sirius nothing mattered. She was a hole, a gaping chasm of despair, and the moment she broke away from Lucius’s arms she knew the full weight of her grief would slam into her to tear her life to pieces. For now all she could do was stay where she was and delay that moment, for she didn’t think she had the strength to face it, not without Sirius at her side.
Every muscle of Lucius’s body was held tensely against hers, and it seemed that amidst the chaos and confusion all around them nobody had noticed how near they now were to the exit. Dazed, Lyra finally pulled her head back to look up at him, and his eyes darkened rapidly as he pressed one finger to her parted lips to silence her words before she could speak them.
Her breath hitched, for she knew that for Sirius’s sake if not her own she should be fighting against Lucius’s clear intent, but her aching body craved the distraction he offered. Tears clouded her vision, but then through their veil she saw Bellatrix hurtle past them with Harry hot on her heels; and to her dizzying relief, they proved to be all she needed.
A blazing mist of rage descended over her, far more welcome than the lust Lucius made her feel against her will. This distraction she could willingly give in to, grimly relishing the stinging fury that for a moment managed to mute her grief.
Pausing only to snatch up her wand, she broke away from Lucius’s slackened hold and tore off in pursuit, able to think of nothing now but revenging herself on the woman who had stolen her husband. She would never see Sirius again, and it was all the fault of Bellatrix Lestrange – and pursuing her revenge was surely far safer than staying in Lucius’s arms even a heartbeat longer.
Behind her she heard Lucius furiously curse under his breath, but she couldn’t allow herself to think of him. With a renewed burst of energy she burst out of the Death Chamber and into the spinning Entrance Chamber, afraid to fire upon Bellatrix for fear of striking Harry instead. If only he would duck she would have a clear shot, and she gritted her teeth as she raised her wand her readiness – but then a door opened before the witch ahead of her.
“No!” Her voice wavering wildly through the tears that broke through once more, Lyra threw herself through the air, but once more fate was not her friend. The door slammed shut behind Bellatrix and Harry, and tears streamed down Lyra’s face as she hurtled forward and wrenched open the door in front of her, even though she knew she was too late.
There was no sign of them. The instant the door closed, the chamber had spun around to change the door’s destination. She had no hope of catching them now, but she could not give up, not when giving up would mean allowing her grief to consume her. Yet as she turned around to try every single door a hundred times until she found them, she slammed into the unmoving weight of another body behind her.
Lucius seized hold of her wrist and wrenched her wand out of her hand, tossing it into the black oblivion all around them as she struggled against his grip. “Don’t be a fool, Lyra!” he said urgently. “You are not thinking clearly, and no wonder – but believe me when I tell you Bellatrix will destroy you. Just as I did not let you go through the veil, I will not let you go in search of her now!”
Enraged with him for giving her nowhere to go but deep into the midst of her terrible grief, Lyra summoned up the last of her strength to pull away from him. She stepped back into nothingness, and without warning her feet left the ground.
Spinning through the darkness with no anchor to hold onto, she doubled over and closed her eyes tightly until she slowly became aware of a gently pulsing light surrounding her. Warily she opened her eyes again to see Lucius drifting towards her through the brightly coloured orbs that lazily hung and spun in the air around them, a physical representation of the universe outside this room – a universe that no longer had Sirius in it.
No. It hurt far, far too much. If Lyra stopped to think on the devastating loss for even a moment, she knew it would destroy her. She needed a distraction from the agony that pulsed through her with every beat of her broken heart, and only one was available to her now Bellatrix had fled.
Her vision swam, but she stretched out and caught hold of Lucius’s black robes to draw him near. “Kiss me,” she said abruptly.
His wand fell to his side as his cold eyes widened incredulously. “I beg your pardon?” he said hoarsely.
“You heard me, damn you!” Clinging onto the fierce lust he had always been able to make her feel, she arched into him and let loose a low, drawn-out moan as his wand slipped through his loosened grip to spin forgotten into the heart of the orbs. “I want you to kiss me, Lucius – no, more than that. I want you to take everything from me, everything you have been trying to force me to give you for so long now. Tonight it’s yours, and all you have to do is kiss me now!”
Lucius breathed in sharply, but he wrapped one arm around her to draw her into the heat of his body. The world seemed to stand still around the two of them, and Lyra’s head rolled to the side as his mouth slowly descended to come to rest against the leaping pulse point in her throat. His lips were like velvet against her skin, achingly tender, almost as if he was afraid she would pull back should he allow the full weight of his lust for her to show through – but tonight that was precisely what she needed. Nothing else would mute the despair of losing Sirius forevermore.
The whispered memory of his face as he tumbled backwards through the veil awoke a fresh cascade of tears to roll down her face as the two of them gently rotated through the air as one, and slowly his hand snaked beneath her robes to brush against the bare skin of her collarbone, his mouth slowly but steadily finding its way towards her mouth.
It wasn’t enough. She needed far, far more – she needed him to forcibly drive all else out of her mind. Near sobbing in frustration, she fumbled with her robes to pull them open and guided his hand onto her breasts, a violent shiver shooting down the full length of her spine as his hoarse groan echoed around the chamber and he began to roughly toy with her nipples, his caresses becoming rapidly more urgent as his mouth finally covered hers, parting them with a powerful thrust of his tongue even as her tears continued to fall.
Lyra fisted her hands through Lucius’s loose hair and cried out into his mouth as he groped at her breasts, his perfectly manicured nails raking across the sensitive skin while his free hand forced its way between their bodies to slip beneath her panties and dance against her cunt. His mouth was still assaulting hers with the passion and hunger he was finally allowing to spill through into the kiss they shared, but when his thumb brushed against her clit and he forced one finger inside her, she could not stop her thoughts from turning back to her husband, a thousand jumbled memories whirling through her mind as she remembered all the times he had touched her like this, and the realisation he would never do so again was too much to silently bear.
She twisted to the side as a loud sob racked her body, and Lucius’s face contorted as he pulled back. His hand still rested against her bare breasts, and he did not even try to disguise the dizzying height of his lust for her, but with a low groan he shook his head.
Lyra’s stomach plummeted, her conflicted emotions doing battle for prominence as the orbs of the planet spun around them, bathing the two of them in an ethereal glow as his thumb slowly stroked across her taut nipple, yet still he showed no sign of resuming the fiercely possessive assault on her body that had been so close to taking away her pain.
“Please, don’t stop!” she begged him, terrified that if he held back even a moment more yet more emotions would burst through to torment her. All she had was him, and wrong though she knew it was, she could see no other choice but to surrender everything to him. “I hurt, Lucius, and I don’t want to hurt. You can take it away, I know you can.”
“Not here,” he said slowly. “Not like this.”
“Please -“
Lucius exhaled deeply, then closed his eyes as he took hold of her hands and kicked his legs to guide them both back towards the floor they left behind what seemed like a lifetime ago. The moment their feet touched the ground they saw the door in front of them once more, and their wands lay there together in front of it.
Lyra’s breath hitched violently as his eyes dipped briefly towards her exposed breasts again, and the raw lust she saw on his face called to something deep inside her. Trying with all her might to ignore the awareness she should not be thinking of answering it, not tonight of all nights, she blinked back her tears and moved back into his arms in willing submission, but the sound of shouts in the chamber outside and footsteps rapidly crossing the floor made it very clear there was no more time to be wasted.
Throwing caution to the wind in her desperation to force aside the desperate grief that simmered barely below the surface, threatening to burst forth and tear her to pieces, Lyra forced herself to look up into Lucius’s darkened eyes as she choked out her wavering words past the lump constricting her throat. “You want me, Lucius, don’t you? Well here I am, offering myself to you – so come on, take me! Take me away from here and make me able to think of nothing but you.”
His jaw clenched. “Is that what happened when I kissed you?”
Lucius’s penetrating stare seemed to cut through her. She flinched and jerked her head. “Yes,” she lied. “When I was in your arms, I knew nothing else.”
He tilted his head to the side, then slowly nodded. “Very well, then. Close your eyes, pet.”
This was it. Lyra’s tears streamed freely down her face once more, but she bowed her head and closed her eyes as she saw him bend down to retrieve their wands.
No sooner had she done so than he murmured an indistinguishable curse and she collapsed to the floor, grateful for the black oblivion that instantly swept her away into the merciful bliss of unconsciousness.
