Looking over Sirius' shoulder at the massive list of items and areas they had to take care of for Dudley, Harry sighed. This was a right mess, though it was done for the best reasons in the world. Lifting his eyes, he looked over at Dudley, who was seated across the table from him, and his aunt who was beside him, filling out papers as Lucius, who was next to her, explained what they were needed for. That part was even more of a mess. One that was going to take time to work with. They were trying though.
As it was, this whole thing just added to the stress of the situation they were in. There was not only them trying to get out, but they had to explain what was really going on to his aunt and Dudley then getting them to come along at some point soon. A right mess.
Finishing up eating, Harry leaned against Sirius and looked over the list. Spying one section he thought he could help with, he said, “I have almost all the books he'll need. I haven't gotten rid of any of mine from school. The only ones you'll need to worry about are for Defense. As Remus was the only good professor we had, you'll have to find something better for that.”
Grinning at that, seeing Remus smile at the compliment, Sirius nodded, “Good. One less thing to worry about. I'm sure we can come up with something decent for Defense easily enough. Between all of us here, we'll manage to get him going good. I'm not sure what anyone wants to do with that part and how to work it, but he's so far behind that we have a lot to work on.”
Turning his head so no one could see his mouth, Harry told Sirius, keeping his voice down, “Get him a good broom, too. He deserves that after this nightmare.”
“Will do,” Sirius told him firmly with a nod, adding that to the list as well.
Pushing the first chunk of paperwork she filled out aside, Petunia reached over and rubbed Dudley's head. He was still a little out of it, feeling good, but he was paying close attention to what was being said around him. It was all so strange, especially for Dudley as he hadn't been exposed to so much or even known about it. She knew some, but hadn't witnessed so much. That caused some problems, but she was working with it.
Last night she spent most of it second guessing what she had done while fretting over her son. This morning, though, she realized she had made the right choice. Dudley came first. Whether he was magical or not didn't matter. Now they needed to press on. And she would be right by his side for all of it, being just as proud of him as she always was. If Vernon couldn't accept that, it was his problem, not hers.
Looking around to those at the table, she asked, after a bracing sip of her tea, “What all do we need to do or gather? And—well, I'm not sure how I'll pay for it until this settles with Vernon.”
“Don't worry about the money,” Sirius told her bluntly as he made some more notes on the sheet. “Harry and I will handle it. It's nothing to worry about. Just muddle on the best you can until you get used to it. And we have a lot to do with this mess. It's nothing we can't handle, though.” Sighing, Sirius put the list down then began to explain, “We won't worry about getting you to the Alley for a couple of days. That has to come, but we need to organize people to go with you before we can get you there. Until then, we'll worry about other areas.”
“Firstly, Snape is coming over this morning to take some scans on Dudley. We think, from what was said last night, that he should drop weight fairly quickly now that his magic is free. That we need to worry about anyway as it can cause issues. Snape thinks there is something he can give him to help and an appetite suppressant so he doesn't have issues with the change. That should help and he's going to feel loads better now. We just need to keep an eye on it and track the weight loss.”
“Your clothes and personal items are all here. The elves also made sure to grab the things you said you desperately wanted. For now, they have them stored in an empty room. We'll let both of you do what you want with that end. Cissy is going to assign an elf to both of you to help. The rooms you're in are smallish, so they can help expand them. That will help. We'll also make sure to give you a tour of the house and explain what everything is so you can get used to it.”
“That you need to do,” Petunia sighed, folding her hands on the table. “I about had a heart attack when the mirror spoke to me this morning.”
Grinning just a little, Harry said, softly, “You'll get used to it. The same with other strange things, like paintings talking to you.”
“I think it's awesome,” Dudley chuckled, sipping his juice. “I had a good conversation with the mirror! It was a right riot!”
“We'll cover it all, I promise. I'm sure we'll forget something and you'll get a few starts, but you'll get used to it soon enough,” Sirius told her with a grin. “We'll also cover some of what's going on and the why behind parts of it. Or the start of it anyway. It'll be a little overwhelming, so we won't do it all. And we'll start with chunks with Dudley as Harry has the books we need. Some of that won't come until we get his wand. Then we have other areas to work on as well.”
“I think Alastor is picking up several forms we need and how to go about this from the Ministry this morning. We do need to fill those out and figure out how to work with this. If what he said was right, Dudley won't have the Trace put on him because of his age, so we can start in some areas right away,” Remus said softly, looking around. “Once we see what we need to do there, we'll have a better feel for how we press on. Draco and Harry can easily help with some parts of it.” Looking at Petunia, he continued, “And I'm sure Narcissa has some books on our culture that she can provide to help easing in.”
“I do and will get them today,” Narcissa said firmly, happy to be able to help in some way. “I'll even sit with you as you read them to explain the best I can.”
“Good. I would like to know. I have some knowledge because of Lily, but not much,” Petunia sighed, regretting even more the fallout with her sister that left them estranged. That had been a touchy topic with her for years now, as she regretted so much and not trying to mend the relationship before it was too late. She also made a firm mental commitment to work with her nephew. She was now seeing him in a different light and it was time to make up for past mistakes. It wouldn't be easy, she knew that, but she would try.
“Lucius is going to help you handle the end with the paperwork as he's better at such areas than the rest of us are,” Sirius continued, scratching his chin.
“One of the items you need to add to the list is opening a vault for both of them. Petunia is going to need one for the support to transfer into. And its best Dudley get his now. This way, the two of you can transfer funds in easily if you have to,” Lucius said, folding his hands on the table and looking at Sirius.
Quickly adding that to the list, Sirius nodded, “Gotcha. Didn't think of that, but you're right. We're also going to need to get Dudley some of our clothes with the special charms on them for those losing weight. That way we don't have to keep buying them. Either that or figure out the spells to put them on his. One or the other.”
“I would suggest the new ones,” Narcissa told him. “The spells are woven in with those and not apt to break the fabric down as quickly. It's a better option, though we can figure out how to do his ourselves and try it to see what happens.”
“I have to ask,” Dudley started, looking around. “Where is the telly and that?”
Grinning a little, Harry said, “We don't have one. Muggle electronics don't work around us or in Magical houses. There are plenty of other things you'll find to do, though.”
Seeing Dudley look aghast and almost panicked, Sirius told him, trying not to grin, “You won't miss it, Dudley, I swear. This afternoon, when we have time, Harry and Draco can take you into the backyard and show you how to fly. That will override anything to do with the telly. They can also start to teach you the basics of Quidditch. You'll like it, I promise.”
“That's on a broom, isn't it?” Petunia asked, a pinched look on her face. She remembered her sister talking about it, the same with James the one time she had met him. “Isn't that dangerous?” As she didn't know much about it, she feared her son getting hurt.
“It is. Don't worry, nothing will happen as they teach him. And he won't fall off,” Remus assured her with a smile. “Besides, he'll like it. I imagine he'll make a wonderful Beater, especially if he boxed. They'll have fun and it'll be fine.”
Wringing her hands, Petunia wasn't sure about this but gave a stiff nod. It was so strange and hard to deal with that she wasn't sure what to do. She would give it a try, though, and see what she thought then decide.
“That's most of it, I think. I'm damned sure things will crop up that we forgot, but that’s the basics. We'll then press on from here and see what we can manage.” Seeing nods as Dudley finished his food, he then continued, “How about we give you a tour of the house and show you what is where. That and odd areas so you don't get frightened. For now, until you get used to it, grab one of us and we'll go somewhere with you. That way you don't get a start.” Seeing nods from the two, Petunia looking apprehensive and Dudley excited, he stood and motioned them to follow. As they walked out, he began to explain parts, hoping this put them both more at ease with not only the situation, but those in the house. That they desperately needed.
“What Albus wants to do is this,” Moody started, looking around. “The day after tomorrow, we'll take Dudley and Petunia to the Alley. We'll do it early in the morning before it gets busy. The plan is for me, Remus, Snape, and Bill to escort them to handle it. We're also going to take Harry. He thought it best, though that's dangerous, because of Gringotts, the funds and to put them more at ease by having someone they know with them. It's going to be a big production, we know that, but we thought it best, for safety sake.” Seeing nods, he pressed on.
“I have forms here that need filled out today. Kingsley is going to get them in the right hands and make sure it doesn't come out.” He explained. “That will handle the biggest problems. It's also going to make damned sure that a Trace isn't put on that wand so Dudley can start working. We need you lot to do that now. If you don't, you're going to end up with him having plenty of powerful bouts of accidental magic, especially as stressful as this situation is.”
“We'll take it on,” Sirius told him firmly.
“Good,” Moody nodded. “Snape is going to come up with several potions to help with this mess. We've also got a few problems with the divorce and support. Those are going to have to go through our courts, not the Muggle ones. It's going to involve several visits to Petunia's solicitor to deal with it. We'll handle those as they crop up.”
“She has the forms signed and I was able to procure her a good divorce solicitor. He'll handle it and be discreet,” Lucius assured the man.
Pleased with that, Moody nodded then sipped from his flask. “Good.” Pressing on, he said, “Vernon is safe. We have him at his sisters for now with some memory modification. We'll work with that as we need to, but it shouldn't be a problem because of what we put in place. Nothing to worry about there and we'll keep an eye out for problems.” Seeing nods and hurt looks from Dudley and Petunia, he decided not to stay on that topic.
“We need you lot to get together the most complete list of what we need to pick up. This is going to be a big production anyway, so we need to know what in Merlin's name we're getting so we don't forget anything as other trips to get such items won't be happening. We would have to send someone for them. So, we want this as complete as we can get it.”
“We've already got the list going,” Remus assured the man. “We'll be adding accordingly as we remember or encounter something.”
“Make sure you get everything you can think of, even if it isn’t needed right away,” Alastor told him firmly. With that, he continued on, “Albus said to start him on theory of the most needed areas if you can. History of Magic and Potions can wait. It's the others we need to worry about. When things start to settle, we'll pick up the other two. Snape says he has the basics of an old potion's lab you can use for now. You need to get that set up in the basement and make sure it's safe where you do. It's—Albus isn't sure how to work with part of this, honestly. He thinks it's best to enroll him in Hogwarts, but they just don't have the staff to take on one on one tutoring. And he doesn't want to force him to start with the first years. Give him time to come up with something.”
“We'll deal accordingly,” Sirius told him softly, knowing that point was moot. He also made a mental note to get with Lucius and Snape about how to handle this. He didn't want the old man to even start paperwork for Hogwarts as that would cause massive problems when it came time to get them out.
“Right,” Moody nodded. “This is a mess, but we'll handle it. It's just going to take time to sort out.” Then he began to run through some more mundane matters, such as ensuring the two started to get to know order members and such, nothing huge.
Sitting in a parlor with his aunt and Dudley, Harry was trying to figure out a way to start this. Because of what was going on and the timetable they were looking at when it came to getting out, this had to come now. At least the start of it. Everyone thought that he was the best one to take it on because they at least knew each other. He would, he just had to figure out how.
Looking at her nephew, Petunia asked, “What do you need to talk to us about? You said it was important.” She wasn't completely comfortable with this yet, but she was working with it. So, she was going to give Harry the benefit of the doubt.
Thinking he had a place to kick it off, Harry said, “First, I need both of you to trust me. I'm not going to pull something stupid or lie to you, alright?” Seeing nods, though a stiff one from his aunt, he pressed on, “Things in this house aren't as they seem right now. It's nothing bad or something that will bother you, just we have to put on a front for those that don't live here. We'll explain all of it as we go along when you settle in a little more. Just trust me, I won't steer you wrong.”
Though curious about that and wondering what was going on, Petunia told him, “We'll deal with it as it comes, Harry.”
As that went smoothly, he pressed on, “We also need you to promise us something. If Dumbledore or someone really close to him tries to get you to do something or talk you into it, say no or something like you'll talk it over with me. Don't agree to it, it doesn't matter what or how innocent it sounds. Come get one of us. Sirius is best for that as Dumbledore isn't going to argue with him too much. It's to keep all of us safe, I promise.”
“He's the one that dropped you on the step, wasn't he?” Petunia asked, tone slightly hard. Looking back, she wondered if there wasn't something wrong about that now or a problem. It didn't set right and she thought it was wrong even back then.
“He is,” Harry told her.
“Anyone that does something like that isn't to be trusted,” Petunia told him firmly, a pinched look on her face.
“You're right,” Harry told her softly. “We'll get into that more later, I swear. Just—act normally, but don't agree. I swear that's to protect you. The others will handle it if he tries. That and be wary around him for anything. He's a master manipulator. And you won't even know he's doing it until you can't stop it or get out. I swear, it's to protect you and the rest of us.”
“We'll be careful,” Petunia told him after seeing Dudley nod.
“You can trust all of us living in this house. We won't lie to you. I promise that. We'll keep you safe and out of harm's way. I know it isn't easy, but we will.” Looking at his aunt, he added, “And Sirius is safe, Aunt Petunia. He's an escaped convict, yes, but he didn't kill mum and dad. We know who did. He was framed and sent to prison without a trial. All these people, including a few from our version of the police, wouldn't be protecting him if he did it.” Harry explained, looking at her.
Sighing, Petunia gave a stiff nod. “We'll work on that, Harry, and take your word for it. Just—give us time.”
“We will and will prove it,” Harry assured her. “Just keep an open mind and an eye out. And if you have any questions, ask. We'll explain the best we can. It's just—so much in our world is different than the Muggle one. Keep that in mind. It's going to be confusing, I know. Just remember you're perfectly safe here and no one will hurt you. I swear it. You might hear some nasty things about Lucius, Narcissa, Draco or Snape, but you can take my word for it they are people you can trust. I would trust them with my life. The same with Sirius and Remus.”
Taking that for what it was, Petunia nodded, but was curious about what Harry might not be talking about yet. It was probably huge. She also understood why they didn't want to start right away. There was so much here to deal with and take in that she wasn't sure how much she could manage without getting overwhelmed.
Figuring that was enough for now and knowing he had covered what the others wanted him to, Harry then grinned before saying, “Come on. We'll go out back. You can sit in the sun, Aunt Petunia, and I can take Dudley for his first broom ride.”
Now completely stiff, Petunia glanced at her son, who was grinning from ear to ear. “I don't know about this broom thing,” she told her nephew.
“Nothing will happen, I swear. I'll take him up with me for the first ride. Then we'll walk him through how to fly. Everyone out there with us will have wands and can stop whatever if it looks like he might get hurt. Nothing to worry about. Besides, it's one of the things we had to learn at school.”
Enthused by this, though nervous, Dudley stood, coaxing his mum to do the same, he asked, “What's it like? And really flying? Not just an illusion or something like that?” He was still a little foggy on the magic part as he hadn't seen Harry do much before and wasn't sure what all everyone else did before, so he wanted to make sure he understood right.
“Really flying,” Harry assured him with a huge grin. “You'll love it. There's no feeling like it in the world. It's great. If you like it, Draco and I will show you how to smack balls around. That's something you'll like too. It's a lot of fun.”
Nodding enthusiastically as Harry led them out of the room, Dudley asked, “What's this Quidditch thing? A game or something?”
“It's a game. Not only that, it's the best game in the whole world. You'll love it,” Harry assured him. “We'll explain it when you get the basics on the broom down. Draco and I both played on house teams at school.”
“Awesome!” Dudley smiled, wanting to do this though uptight. It would be the first real magical thing he got to do and couldn't wait.
“We'll make sure you both get to try butterbeer for the first time, too,” Harry told them. Then, before they could ask, he explained, “It's kinda' like the Wizarding version of a soft drink. It tastes much better, though. You'll love it!”
Trailing along behind the two boys, Petunia had a tight look on her face. She wasn't at all sure about this broom thing and how she would handle seeing her son on one. It sounded plenty dangerous to her. She would deal with it, though. After all, it was a new life for her and her son, so they needed to experience it for the first time and judge from there. Just—well, if she couldn't handle seeing it, she would shut her eyes. With that, she reminded herself to trust Harry. He seemed to know what he was talking about, so she would go with that.
As they made their way into the backyard, she couldn't help but manage a tight smile at her son's enthusiasm. She couldn't remember the last time Dudley was this excited about anything. That was good so she would go with it and deal as it came. She was sure she would have to keep remembering that, though.
