Chapter 29
After the owl, sleep didn't happen for any of those in the house. Instead, they were awake and waiting for information. Remus had sent an owl to Albus asking just what happened and for news. Sirius sat and fumed, holding Harry close while Harry just looked worried.
By the time the first rays of dawn were streaming in the windows and there was still no answer, the three gave over trying to sleep as a bad job and went down to have brekky. Remus hoped they would get news soon so they could get some rest, but feared what the news might bring as if it was horrific it might set Sirius off. While the elves tended to take care of the cooking, Remus decided to tend to the task that morning. Mostly it was to keep his mind off what might come with the owl post. Plus he wanted to do something special. If he went about it this way, he could have Harry and Sirius assist. As he started preparations, enlisting Sirius and Harry to help with some, he made small talk. While it wouldn't get their mind off the events of the night before, it would distract them slightly, all he was really trying for. He was sure when an owl came in from Albus or the Prophet was delivered, an event which hadn't happened yet, it would take real effort to calm Sirius down and not have him go attempt something quite foolish. While he tended to starting the meal, he kept a close eye on what the two were doing. Harry was fine with cooking as he had experience, thanks to his so-called family, it was Sirius who was the issue. Oh, Sirius could do the basics, it was anything more complex which caused problems as he never had to tend to such matters. He was the sort who would just do the same kind of meals over and over because they were simple and he knew how to cook them, not try for anything more complex even if he liked the food. When he had everything going good and the two were taking care of the tasks he wanted, Remus looked up when a couple owls swooped in. One he knew was the Prophet from seeing the creature clutching the paper. A glance at the other told him it was probably from Albus because of the handwriting. It was time to deal with the fallout.Sirius, too, was watching as the owls came in. When he saw what they were carrying, he stopped what Remus had him doing and made a beeline straight for where the two perched on the edge of the table. He wanted to know what was going on and how bad it had been. What was contained in both was bound to set him off, something he would admit to himself, but he needed to know!Remus knew what could come if Sirius read both and put a hand on his shoulder. “Sirius, I think you should let me read them first,” he told his lover gently. “I'll tell you what they say, of course, but it might be best you not have details or blown out of proportion reporting to add fuel to what you're dealing with.”When Sirius spun around to look at him, probably to protest, he added, keeping a soothing tone, “I'll tell you, my word. You don't want blindsided with the worst when it comes to details with all you're dealing with. It would just set you off, what Bella was probably trying for. You don't want to walk into whatever deranged scheme she has cooked up. You know better than the rest of us what's she's like. Nothing she does makes sense, but it works to light things ablaze.”Of course, Sirius wanted to argue plenty over what Remus said, especially with as high as emotions were, but he wasn't so blinded by anger or other things he couldn't see Remus made sense. Yeah, some details, especially when it came to the Prophet's form of reporting, he didn't need to know.Head dropping forward as his emotions warred with rational thinking, he then gave a slow nod and turned back to the counter, planning to finish what he was doing. When he stepped back over, he gave the tense and wary Harry a pat on the back, saying, “Just fill us in when you get the gist. Make sure you keep an eye on the food as well since we don't want it burning.” While he tried to keep his tone light, he didn't quite manage, it coming out sounding tense and slightly uneven. There was even a slightly pinched look on his face as he waited to hear.“I will,” Remus told him with a nod, relieved there hadn't been a huge argument over it. With the bond there and his role in the relationship, Sirius would come out on top. This was an area it was best for him tend to as he knew how to word plenty to keep from setting the very volatile Sirius off then having him ready to go exact revenge. After taking a seat at the table, making sure to keep half an eye on the two, Remus paid the owl for the Prophet then took both the paper and Albus' letter. He decided to read Albus' missive first as it would contain the facts and not the spin or sensationalism of the Prophet. With hands that trembled slightly, he opened the letter and began to read, body tense as he did. While he wasn't Sirius, not having the flash-fire temper, he was plenty upset over this and what could have happened. As he read, he let out an internal sigh of relief. Though it was bad and the graves were desecrated, it wasn't the worst possible scenario. As he read, he told the two, “It's not as bad as it could have ended up. She took after the graves, yes, but it was the headstones, toppling then writing on them, and setting fire to the plants on them, not anything worse. What is worse is she torched the whole cemetery, toppling all the headstones.”“It's bad enough,” Sirius grumbled, shaking his head, but thankful she didn't dig the bodies up or something. Bella was quite capable of something that deranged.“She then went after the town, going after the house James and Lily died in. It was burnt to the ground. Then she did the same with plenty of others, mostly those Magical,” Remus explained, a distracted tone to his voice. When he reached one paragraph, he sighed, sounding sad, “Bathilda Bagshot died in the attack. Hers was close enough it was attacked at the beginning and she wasn't able to get out.”“She was a sweet lady,” Sirius told him, brow furrowed, shaking his head. “Lily adored her and the stories she told.”“I met her more than once and she was very nice,” Remus told him, looking sad. “Albus said the Ministry rallied swiftly enough and was there. It could have ended up worse if they hadn't shown up quickly.” Then, for the first time, he smiled, “Rodolphus was caught and is in a secure cell back in Azkaban.”“One out,” Sirius grinned, turning to look at Remus. Though it was plenty bad, it could have ended up far worse with what he knew of Bella.“A very important one,” Remus nodded. “Albus said he doesn't think this was a plot by You-Know-Who, but one Bella came up on her own to draw you out. From what he says, Rufus thinks the same way. It means we just need to stay right where we are and not allow ourselves to end up drawn in.”“It probably was,” Sirius nodded, patting the relieved looking Harry on the back. With a sigh, he admitted, “You were right last night and it was just a stunt. She hit where she knew it would upset me most.” Then he lowered his voice and admitted, “It's not the last one she'll try. As it didn't work, she's going to attempt something else to draw me out so she can exact revenge. I'm sure she knows there is no getting what I took out of her hands back, but she'll try to make me pay.”“We just need to ignore it,” Harry tossed out there, voice quiet and quivering because of what he was dealing with. Adding into a conversation like this was harder than most because of what it was.“Harry's right,” Remus agreed, nodding. “Keep this in mind, Sirius. She's apt to end up becoming more elaborate since it didn't work.”“True,” Sirius sighed, patting Harry on the back again. “Everyone has put everything in place they can to protect themselves. Rufus is ready. Everyone with an ounce of common sense knows what can come from what I did. We'll just hide.” Though he didn't like the concept of hiding, preferring to call it something else, but it was the truth. They needed to stay hidden to keep themselves safe. He and Harry had come back from death once, but there wouldn't be another chance to do so. If something happened to one of them, the other two would die right along with them. None of them had the right to make that choice for all of them.Remus smiled and was relieved Sirius wasn't letting this set him off. As he read through the Prophet, he snorted and shook his head. Tossing it back on the table, he stood to tend to the cooking. “The letter from Albus contains more information than the Prophet article. It went more for sensationalism and the usual rather than cold, hard facts.”“Not surprised there,” Sirius said with a roll of his eyes, feeling himself start to relax once more. “They can't seem to do real news, no matter what.”“Someone needs to take over and push them to do it right,” Remus told them, tending to what was on the stove. “Not the mumbo jumbo soft hitting they do. Maybe something similar to papers on the continent who tell it like it is and hold the Ministry over the bubbling cauldron to make them step up. Though Rufus is doing so, pressing for better whatever and investigating can only help matters, in plenty of ways.”“Until the Prophet has some real competition, it won't happen,” Sirius snorted, shaking his head. “Most are too complacent to demand they do something, and are used to this.”“True,” Remus agreed with a nod, stirring what was in one of the pans. “This mess—we need more than what they are doing.”While Harry listened in, he didn't contribute to it as the two knew more than he did. However, he was feeling better. Since Sirius wasn't overly agitated, he was handling the mess better. Sirius was the key to helping what he was dealing with in many ways. And the calmer he stayed, the better Harry did. At this point, he just wasn't in a place where he could tell him that outright, though it would help. He hoped Remus and Sirius would figure it out soon.As he chopped some of the ingredients, he leaned against Sirius and listened in. It was not only to know what was going on and to help them protect themselves, but the calm discussion helped, plenty.
“Have you found out anything, Severus?” Albus asked him. They were meeting in his small home, one which was hidden well enough and protected, thankfully. Severus had been summoned, so he was certain there was at least a tidbit of information to pass along.
“Some, but not anything drastic,” Severus sighed, sipping his tea. The summons hadn't been one of the nice ones and was highly stressful, so he was trying to relax. “First, the Dark Lord is enraged beyond anything we've ever seen. I should put that out there now so you can pass it along. The loss of money alone drove him there. It apparently crippled plenty for him.”“I assumed,” Albus nodded, looking pleased. He didn't think Tom realized how bad the blow would be to have the monetary end taken away.“I'm sure he has some funding from elsewhere, but it messed up some plan he had as he was in a full rant mode over it,” Severus added, looking a tad smug over what the plan accomplished. He then pressed on. With a sigh, he added, “Bella's stunt last night had him even angrier over it. Rodolphus being arrested didn't aid matters. Bella was on the wrong end of his wand over it and he had a rather large tantrum over the whole debacle.”“Not unexpected,” Albus admitted. Then he added, a sigh to his voice, “I'm sure he liked part of what she did as he probably thinks, like she does, it'll draw Sirius out. I'm sure he's in Tom's sights as well.”“Oh yes,” Severus agreed grimly. “We're under orders to capture Black, Lupin and Potter over this mess. The direct order was to bring them to him alive. It was made quite clear any harm comes to them before they land in his hands means a fate worse than death.”“The owl I received from Remus made it clear Sirius knows this is a plot and is keeping impulses under control,” Albus assured him.“He needs to as it will walk him into just what everyone wants,” Severus pointed out, hoping the wolf was right and the dog was under some form of control.Smug look returning, he then added, “The consensus is Black and the other two are still holed up in Grimmauld Place. Assignments were made to watch the place. A word to everyone to not be seen going in might be wise. The same with making sure the title change isn't in the public record with a readable name on it.”“I'll tend to getting in touch with the Order members so they aren't seen,” Albus assured him. Then he added, smiling slightly, “I paid extra so the title change is kept quiet and my name isn't listed as the owner already. It's safe.”“Good,” Severus nodded. With a sigh, he told him, “I don't think he realizes the Horcruxes are in danger. As we discussed; Nagini is one and he's not stepping up protection of her. In fact, he lets her roam at will. If he knew, I'm sure he'd keep her closer at hand.”“Any hints that he realizes they are, let me know. We're trying to go about this as circumspect as possible so he's not alerted.”“I'll keep an ear to the ground,” Severus assured him.“Is there any word on Potter or Malfoy returning to school this year?” Severus then asked, wanting to know before he launched into the last part he had hints about.“I checked with Remus in my letter and he said it's not possible for Harry to return,” Albus told him. “I didn't think so, of course, but it's shored up. They're taking on homeschooling him. And I talked to Rufus. He told me plainly Draco won't be coming back. Not only is there protection, but he's under something akin to house arrest until the war is over.” Then, brow furrowed, he asked, curious, “Why?”“I'm not certain, let me put it out there now, but some bits mentioned tonight leads me to believe the Dark Lord is planning something to not only do with a mission for Draco, as he apparently doesn't know Lucius defected yet, and the school. It wasn't an overt threat, but some of the odd bits mentioned, such as information he wanted from me, leads me to think he might end up focused on the school. When he realizes Draco is out of the mix, he'll change plans, but I doubt it'll deter him. Which means we have to start planning, now.”“We do,” Albus nodded, looking grave. “Let me discuss measures with not only Rufus, but the Board. We have some in place, but if there is a threat, we need to put up plenty.”“It's something I think you need to do,” Severus told him honestly, with a shake of his head. “He wouldn't ask some of what he did unless he has something in the planning stages.”“Yes, I will,” Albus told him with a determined nod. Then, gently, he added, “I think I need to fill Rufus in on your secret, Severus. You know he's safe to tell. Nothing will manage to pry it out of him, no matter what. I can't feed him some of this and have him know the gravity without letting him know the sources. And, after this mess is over, it will protect you from prosecution.”“As long as you can assure me it will be kept quiet, I take no issue,” Severus told him without thinking about it. He would need something when this was over so he didn't find himself in Azkaban. He would leave it up to Albus to convince the Minister he was a real spy and not playing Albus.“Tom hasn't figured out Lucius defected yet then?” Albus asked, relaxing somewhat. He wanted the major issues out of the way before he delved into the details of what went on so he could pick up on any clues there might be.“Not yet,” Severus told him with a shake of his head. “He wasn't summoned today, as it was just a few. If Lucius hadn't shown, he would have been more enraged than he was because he would have realized what it meant. Draco being released from Azkaban wasn't mentioned either. It's only a matter of time, of course, and will probably come today or tomorrow, but it is still a secret so far.”“Good,” Albus nodded, pleased. “The more time we have, the better.”Then he began asking for details so the two of them could figure out any clues which might have gone unnoticed. The more they had, the better.
Sirius stood at the window in their room and looked out over the busy Muggle street, arms folded over his chest. While he was watching for any of their kind who might be tarrying about, he was also just watching and enjoying a view he didn't have at Grimmauld Place. So far all he saw were Muggles hurrying around. As Remus told them, this home was in a busy place. With the wards on it, the noise didn't bother them at all and they heard nothing. It wasn't until you looked outside you realized it was in a rather congested area. He didn't mind it in the least. It would give you something to watch if you were bored this way.
At the moment Remus and Harry were taking a nap. He had been as well, but found his mind too chaotic and busy to stay asleep. Rather than lay there and chance disturbing the two, he slid out of bed. Mostly, he was focused on the bit with Bella and all she had unleashed. While they were as protected as they could manage, it didn't mean there wasn't concern. Anyone with an ounce of common sense would be because of the hell he knew would come from all he had done. He was dealing, as were the other two. It was just a case of he wanted to make sure. With his role in the bond, it came with the territory.Trying not to focus on what could come, he forced himself to switch his train of thought to what he considered a more pressing problem; Harry. Oh yes, he was getting far better and closer to normal, but he wanted it back the way it had been as fast as they could manage. He just had to figure out a way to push it there, nothing more.It wasn't just some of the behavior bothered him, though it did to no end, the same with Remus, but it was making him mental because of the bond. Because of his role in the relationship, it was pulling in odd ways, not the least of which was Harry wasn't 'obeying' like he wanted because he wasn't back to the place before the mess started. It was bugging him and not helping with all he had to deal with. The 'alpha' part of him wanted to force the issue, though he wouldn't allow it to happen. Doing so would just make matters all the worse. It was an area he was exerting plenty of self control over so he didn't make the situation with Harry worse than it already was.Remus—he was dealing fine there. His lover knew how to deal with the situation and was doing so, making it as easy on him as he could. Even the bit with Harry was going well there and he didn't feel the need to exert the whole 'I'm in charge and don't you forget it' bit with him. Remus knew just where to tread and how lightly to do so. It aided in this whole mess more than he would ever know.Head going back, he groaned. It was so hard, more than he let on. While he knew exerting the self control he was would help in the long run, more than he probably knew, it was making him slightly mental at this juncture. He would keep on, though, and not let himself dance where he shouldn't and make the situation all the worse. If he did, it would just take longer to get where they needed. With the nightmare going on and the possibility of them ending up drawn in being there, he couldn't allow himself to backslide or take the easy way out. No, he had to press on just how he was and nudge Harry gently. It wouldn't help a damned thing with either of them to let himself make the whole situation all the worse. After another glance out the window, scanning around to make damned sure no one from the other side of the mess was out there lurking, he decided to crawl back into bed with the two. He would make sure he didn't disturb them, of course, but the act of being together helped him and Harry plenty. When he turned back around, he stopped and smiled at the two curled up there. This wasn't what any of them wanted, but he loved it. More than he would admit.Slipping over to the bed, being as quiet as he could, he then slid under the covers and curled up to Harry. Though asleep, fairly deeply from what Sirius could tell, Harry pressed tighter to him and Remus' hand came over to rest on his hip. With a smile, Sirius shut his eyes after he kissed Harry on the head then gave a contented sigh.
