“What utter bollocks,” Draco yelled, ripping his parchment into hundreds of tiny pieces before setting them on fire and stomping them to ash.
Hermione looked up from her studying curiously. “Mind telling me what that was about?”
Draco sat down with a huff and shoved his books away. “The next session of the Wizengamet isn’t for a month! I can’t wait that long… not knowing.”
She nodded and reached over to pat his hand. He’d been obsessed with getting his contract to Robert fulfilled. She couldn’t blame him. The thought of becoming an escort was chilling, and not in a good way. She’d hate to see him have to go through that.
“You’ll get it done.”
“There’s more,” he said dully.
“What?”
“All my contacts have claimed neutral on my bill.”
“Oh,” she said, biting her lip. “Can’t they change their position?”
“They could,” he growled. “But they’re being paid to stay neutral by my bleeding father.”
She rubbed her eyes and sat back. “That is a problem.”
“That’s more than a problem, Granger. It’s a bloody nightmare.”
“How many howlers have you gotten from your father this week?”
“Including the one at breakfast?” She nodded. “Ten.”
“He’s making a fool out of himself,” she muttered. “Rita already retracted the story.”
Draco smirked. “Wish I could have been there for that one.”
Hermione’s smirk rivaled his. “Maybe we can claim that as a reward, memories.”
Draco chuckled and pulled his books back to him, sighing at the pile of work. “I don’t know how we’re going to do all this research. We’ve only got until next weekend.”
She shrugged. “We did dragons in less than a week.”
“True,” he said. “But my mind isn’t really on this, now is it?”
“So be the Slytherin everyone knows you are.”
He quirked a brow and crossed his arms imperiously. “You’re saying I’m not?”
She smirked again. “If you haven’t thought of blackmail, then you’re failing miserably.”
Draco chuckled darkly. “Keep that up, Granger, and you’ll be a Slytherin yet.”
She laughed and went back to her studies. Tuesday night, Snape had sent a missive telling them that they needed to brush up on their basilisk knowledge. He had run upon a contact that made him an offer he couldn’t refuse. It seems the old chap had been breeding basilisks and one happened to get loose in his home. Terrified that it would kill him, he sealed it up and fled. If they could successfully kill it, they could have it. That kind of deal could net them at least half a million galleons. Snape couldn’t do it because he’d be right in the middle of brewing, his contract with St. Mungo’s already in place with a deadline. So once again, it was the slaves to the rescue.
“Are you worried about tonight?” she asked after a while.
Draco shrugged and jotted a note down before closing his book. “I see no reason to dwell on it. It’s going to happen regardless of how I feel about it.”
“True,” she agreed, shutting her books and packing them away. “I’ll ask Harry if he can record some simple orders in parseltongue for me. That should help.”
Draco hummed. “I still hate that Potter knows so much.”
“He’s helped already,” she said softly. “You can’t deny that.”
He really couldn’t. Harry had fiercely defended her and even Malfoy to a point while still managing to keep their potions partnership… and their Master… silent. It had cost her though. She’d had to lay her heart bare, telling him everything she’d gotten up to since the war. And that included the not so savory meetings with Draco behind Ron’s back. Harry had been the most upset about that, but he’d gotten over it. Now he was hounding her about telling Ron but she refused. Ron was loyal to a fault, but he had a big mouth. She’d prefer he remained in the dark about Snape but she did sit him down and talk with him about her and Draco’s partnership. That had helped some, though he still scowled whenever she and Draco slunk off to the library to study.
“I still don’t like it,” Draco growled. “Or the fact that McGonagall writes to our Master now to tattle.”
Hermione snorted at that. They’d gotten several reprimands through their marks since McGonagall had found out about Snape. They had to be extremely careful around the old bat, keeping their words polite, their arses in their rooms at curfew and out of the library at closing.
“Come on,” Draco sighed. “Lunch time. I’m due another howler.”
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
They paced back and forth in Draco’s room after an uneventful dinner, waiting for their inevitable punishment. Their Master had written at lunch to remind them of it. That was followed by a rather rude howler from Lucius informing Draco that he was quickly losing patience with his lack of response. His howlers were so regular that the Great Hall didn’t even bat an eye when it arrived. In fact, others had taken to dropping small scraps of parchment by Draco with suggested spells to obliterate the offending things. They’d also gained the support of many during the week. Seeing the two polar opposites not only ignore the press, but be platonically polite to each other and even study together to the wee hours of the morning had shaken everyone. Things were looking up.
“Ready?” Snape drawled as he appeared in the room.
Hermione’s stomach bottomed out and Draco paled. Okay, maybe not.
“Let’s do this,” Draco said gruffly.
He grabbed Hermione’s hand and started to drag her across the room when a regal black eagle owl swooped into the room and landed on Draco’s shoulder, digging its claws in.
“Ah,” Draco said, gritting his teeth against the pain. “Wondered when the evening howler would get here. Must have been caught in traffic.”
Hermione snorted and crossed her arms. “Well, open the blasted thing so we can go.”
Snape frowned as Draco took the offending red parchment from the owl. “You get howlers often?”
“Only from father,” Draco muttered. “One at every meal.”
The howler opened itself and the room seemed to drop a few degrees when Lucius’ voice filled the room.
I cannot believe you have not answered me yet. Due to your disobedience and lack of response, I shall be meeting you within ten minutes of receiving this howler. And you can count on me invoking the Malfoy name. You will not disgrace this family again.
“What does he mean, invoke the Malfoy name?” Hermione asked.
Snape’s eyes were glowing indigo when he answered. “The enchantment I broke on Draco the first claiming, you remember it?”
“Of course. It was… strange.”
“It ensures that he must obey Lucius. And now that is gone. Invoking the Malfoy name will do nothing but enrage Lucius.”
“So should we stay for the show or get on with the punishment?” Draco asked cautiously.
Snape studied the pair. “Punishment first. I shall tell Minerva you two will be gone for the weekend for punishment. That should please her. And she’ll head off Lucius, who will no doubt be foaming at the mouth when he hears it.”
“We’ll have to deal with him eventually,” Draco said quietly.
“He won’t strike until next weekend,” Snape said, running his finger over his chin in thought. “And you two will be out hunting a basilisk then. With any luck, we’ll be butchering the beast all weekend and Lucius will have to wait another week.”
“Why would he wait?” Hermione asked.
“Because once he invokes that name, it takes a few days to walk again,” Draco said quietly.
Hermione’s eyes darkened in anger. “I’ll kill him.”
“Get in line,” Snape said, snapping his fingers and producing two floor length cloaks with hoods. “Put these on. We’re going to see Minerva and I have a feeling she has a certain pureblood in her office.”
They did as they were told, knowing better than to argue with Snape. He was pissed, to say the least. The cloaks covered them entirely, draping over their faces to obscure them completely. Snape put his hood on and drew them into his arms, stepping forward. They came to a halt in the Headmistress’s office. And she wasn’t alone.
“What is the meaning of this?” Lucius hissed, his eyes narrowing at their entrance.
“I really wish you would use conventional methods of transportation,” McGonagall cut across the purebloods response. Then she sighed. “But I suppose you wouldn’t be you if you did. You’d probably do it more just to spite me. Did you need something?”
Snape nodded and pointed to Hermione and Draco.
“You wish to take them?” McGonagall asked, her eyebrow raised. She shot a look toward Lucius and then Draco, his taller form giving him away. “Whatever for?”
Snape summoned a parchment and quill, quickly jotting down ‘attitude adjustment’ before floating it back to her. McGonagall read it and then chuckled.
“Very well then. You may go. But I expect them to be back by Sunday at dinner and whole and healthy upon their arrival, is that clear?”
Snape nodded and bowed, putting his arms around his pets again.
“Good. Have fun.”
“I beg your pardon,” Lucius growled just as Snape started to move. “You’re just letting this… this filthy vampire abduct two children from your school?”
McGonagall’s face turned black. “I am allowing their guardian to take them home for the weekend, Mr. Malfoy. And it is absolutely none of your concern, as is your son’s lack of response to those ridiculous howlers you’ve been sending him. He’s done nothing wrong. In fact, he’s become the model student, even taking on some independent studies. Let the boy alone.”
“No,” Lucius growled. “He’s made a mockery of our good name and I demand answers.”
McGonagall’s mouth pursed in distaste. “I’m sorry, Mr. Malfoy. It seems that Draco is not here at the moment. I’m so sorry you missed him. He should return by Monday. Good day to you.”
Lucius spluttered before his lips peeled back in a hideous sneer. “What do you mean he isn’t here?”
“He requested leave for the weekend to pursue some avenues for his future. I saw no reason to deny his request. He is of age, after all. As I said, I’m sorry you missed him. Good day.” Lucius stood up, wand in hand. McGonagall was faster, her wand pointed straight at his nose. “I suggest you think long and hard about your next move, Lucius,” McGonagall said quietly.
Lucius growled and put his wand away. “This isn’t over!”
McGonagall stood regally. “I can assure you it is.”
Snape took that opportunity to whisk them away. They landed in his bedroom.
“Do you think she’ll be alright?” Hermione asked worriedly.
Snape chuckled and took their cloaks. “Lucius is no match for the likes of Minerva McGonagall. Rest assured, she has him well at hand. You two, on the other hand, are not.”
“What?” she whispered.
“We have a few matters to discuss,” Snape said darkly. “Starting with the matter of sucking off one Charles Weasley.”
