Harry looked over at them, gave a nod, and got to his feet. He stretched first, then moved to where his brother stood, bumping his shoulder against his. "Alright?" came softly. "I haven't seen you that furious in a good long time, little brother."
Another, even deeper sigh, as slowly he calmed further, magic completely retreating as his head turned. "That's because I haven't allowed myself to get that angry in a very long time. Especially after I put that cadet I was training with one afternoon in the infirmary with second-degree burns, and several broken bones." He looked up at him, their eyes meeting...holding. "Why, Harry, does it have to be so fucking hard?" he asked him. "Why does everyone expect us to be like our father? Why can't we just be accepted for who WE are, not what everyone else wants us to be?"
"A very good question, and unfortunately for us both, one I haven't an answer to."
They heard movement behind them, and when their heads turned they saw that Ardyn had gotten to his feet, moving around the table slowly, never noticing the silent communication going on behind him as his eyes were focused solely on the Peverell Potter brothers.
"Very likely because you, Roark, joined the Academy a full five yahrens {years}, and you Harry, a full three before anyone has ever thought to attempt to. Then, to make matters even worse, you both blew through what is supposed to be a four to five yahren military training program in two, far outstripping everyone not only in class work but in practicals. Then there were the exams...Roark, you scored the highest exam marks ever seen in the history of the Academy, and Harry posted the second highest, the both of you graduating with full honors. Those are very hard facts for any warrior's ego to take...including mine."
He heaved a deep sigh. "I suppose Grandfather told you what our final exam scores were?"
"He didn't have to. I looked up your records. It was truly amazing, if not completely intimidating that a sixteen and nineteen yahren {year} old had the kind of scores most only dream of achieving. Hell, Roark, you even outscored Commander Cain and Admiral Roark, both thought to be the top strategic and tactical minds alive today, despite Commander Cain and the Battlestar Pegasus' disappearance, and Admiral Roark's retirement for active combat duty and to this day, they are both still considered to be the top strategic and tactical geniuses of our time."
He wanted to touch him, to lay his hands on him, but he knew it would be the wrong thing to do. Patience, he thought to himself. "I wasn't trying to outdo, or even outscore anyone. All I wanted was to do the best that I could. My size...my AGE, both worked against me. They all kept saying that I would never make it through, that I would drop out as soon as the classes got more difficult. I just wanted to show them how wrong they were. That I could and WOULD do it."
Now. Now he could touch him. "I would say you did exactly that," he told him, laying his hands on his shoulders, feeling him tense slightly as he squeezed gently. "Quite convincingly, I would say. You both did."
Roark drew free of him suddenly, turning to look up at him. "So convincingly that I am still not as accepted as I should be. So be it. We will, as we always have, deal with it. We need Kale's files, Ardyn. Do you know where they are?"
"Yes, of course. They're in the storage room down in the basement. I can have someone go down and get them for you if you like. Have them brought here."
"No," Harry said, "have them taken to our office."
"As you wish," he said looking at him to see the same look that was in Roark's. He turned then, nodded to Severus, who still had not spoken a word, then to the Durins before striding out of the office.
Then...finally, several centons {minutes} after the door slid shut, he spoke. "THAT...could prove to be a problem."
"Hum...a very BIG problem," Desmond said, in complete agreement with his brother-in-law. He got to his feet, stretching his long, lanky body.
Roark looked at the both of them, a midnight brow arching at their words. "What could?"
"He wants you, Rory," Alexei said as he too stood, stretched, nearly giving a moan when his back cracked in several places.
"Um...mm. Does he? I had noticed that he seemed to be attracted to me at the spaceport, and again the few times we've run into him. When he touched me just now..." he paused a thoughtful look on his face, confusion entering his eyes.
"Roark, what is it?" Harry asked him worriedly.
He shook his head., his confusion becoming much more pronounced as he began to try and cycle through the feelings he had received from Ardyn. The confusing mess that they were. "What, Rory?" Jordan asked, coming to his side and setting a hand on his arm. "When he touched you...what? What did you pick up?"
"I...don't know, Jordan. First and foremost, he still doesn't want us here, and we need to keep asking ourselves why that is. Especially as he certainly never answered the question you posed. If what I sensed from him is right, we are going to have to be very careful about what we say around him."
"Tell us what you got from him," Tyler said as he moved to stand beside Jordan.
"That's just it, Ty, I'm not at all sure that I CAN. His emotions...his thoughts and feelings are all so jumbled and conflicted. There's not a single thing that I can lock onto, other than he wants Harry and I off Aquaria."
"Do you believe that he may be the leak we're looking for?"
"Unfortunately, I do, but to what extent, I can't say. Is he the leak that killed Kale? No proof that it was him and not Rodolphus Lestrange as everyone has since been led to believe."
"Rodolphus Lestrange did NOT kill Kale," Desmond said.
"No, he didn't," Alexei agreed. "It wasn't his style. I've seen a few of his terminations after the fact. His kills are instant, straight up and into the heart, often severing the aorta."
"Then why aren't we arresting him--"
"I would love nothing better than to bring him in, Ty," he interrupted, "but we need more than our feelings. We have absolutely no tangible proof, but I do promise you this," he stepped closer, lifting a hand to lay it to his chest over his heart. "Just as I made a promise to Logan, Kale's murderer WILL be brought before our courts for the justice he deserves. Though truthfully, not the justice we ourselves would like to give him--"
"Dodge the lightning, the more he escapes, the faster the bolts come--"
"That will be quite enough of that, Hadrian." A stern look was thrown his way. "Now behave." He turned back to Roark. "Would you like for us to work on that instead of helping Logan?"
"Yes, I think that may actually be a good idea. I'll let Logan and the others know there's been a change. IF Ardyn is our main leakage point, let's try to use him instead of him using us. Harry and I are going to start going through Kale's files and reports. We also would like to finish going through the Garrison's files."
Tyler nodded as Severus stepped up behind him to wrap his arms around him, drawing him back against his chest. There had been a time not so long ago when he would never have been able to believe himself of just such a gesture toward bloody, Commander James Potter's sons.
"Are you alright?" he asked him softly. "You're still humming with a great deal of suppressed rage."
Roark settled back into his embrace with a sigh. "I'll be fine, Severus," he told him, then pulled himself free, and turned to look up at him. "How about a good, long duel, old man?"
"Old man! I'll give you old man. Gym. Now. Both of you."
Roark and Harry laughed as they hurried from the conference room, heading down to the gym. Severus shook his head, a fond smile slowly curving his lips. "Cheeky brats," he said, which earned him a round of laughter from the Durin's.
"They are at that." Alexei agreed, watching the door slide closed after the boys.
