Chapter 3: In which history is discussed
It was near midday the next morning until they met a and and it was a very different looking Harry Dursley who was brought in front of his rescuer by the major-domos of Snape manor.
The master of the house was currently immersed in his correspondence and didn't look up when Walters announced his presence. He was aware of someone walking around in the study but he ignored the boy. Only after his seal was firmly pressed into the wax on his letter he looked up and had to suppress a gasp.
Severus Snape had acted on a whim and the flicker of an idea and now he could see for the first time what he bought the evening before.
The filthy child of the former evening had been changed into a clean and tidy youth with messy ebony hair and white skin that looked as if it had never seen a day in the sun. `Maybe a result of the dirt acting as a shield'. He directed the boy to the desk and began a closer inspection with Harry fidgeting self-consciously under his stare.
The servant had been outfitted with the plain dark livery Snape had demanded and it hugged the small frame rather fetchingly. The uniform consisted of simple black slacks and a long high collared jacket with a black shirt underneath. As it was custom for his status only the fingers were visible under the simple cuffs and one of the boys hands held the thin gloves and a black mask. A pair of boots completed the assemble. All in all the boy made a very attractive figure.
Too thin maybe and something should be done against this unruly hair but all the little faults only gave depth to the picture.
"Good morning."
"Good morning Sire." Green eyes were now observing him like he himself had done some minutes earlier and Severus Snape couldn't decide if he should be amused or angry about this frankness. There was no malice in the younger one's stare so he let it pass.
"Please sit down."
Instead of choosing the chair in front of the desk the boy came to him and sat down on the floor. "Okay, ma- eh, Sire."
The older wrinkled his nose. "You can continue to call me master or sir, I don't mind."
"I will. Walters-"
"Mr. Walters."
"Yes, him. He told me to call you sire but I simply cannot do it, master sounds better." He was grinning a little cheekily but was rewarded with a slap on his wrist for it.
"Don't make a mistake, I will not accept any rebelliousness from you. If you push me too far you will discover that I know how to punish imprudent servants. Do you understand?" The chastised youth nodded and rubbed his hurting wrist.
"I know what the colour of your eyes imply." This got an open laugh from the youth.
"Vernon said it is the colour of Irish stubbornness and that it suits me."
"Remember that I do not like stubborn sniffling brats."
A submissive not was the answer but the dimple on his chin stayed.
"I think we have to clear the rules first. I am the master of this house and as you might have heard from the other servants my name is Severus Snape. I am a potions master and I teach the elite of wizard children during the year at Hogwarts. At the moment I am on a hiatus semester. This is all you have to know about me for now.
I have some questions and you will answer them truthfully. Let's start with your knowledge about the magical world. And don't pretend that you don't know anything, you weren't overly surprised by the objects in this room."
Harry was thinking hard for a minute and tried to formulate a halfway intelligent answer, he didn't want to embarrass himself in front of his master. "I never went to school so I am not familiar with the historical facts but I know that some time around my birth the magical and the eh, normal world coexisted without the non-magical people being aware of wizards. It isn't a common fact nowadays too."
He stopped and checked for Snape's reaction but the impassive face betrayed none of the thoughts that went on behind it.
"Go on."
Pale fingers followed the patterns of the carpet. "I don't know what happened but somehow the wizards decided to take control over the non-magical people. Not really, it is—how should I say it—your people rule us somehow but more setting us barriers than guiding us. Some areas are simply forbidden by normal folk and sometimes people disappear. The upper classes and the upper-middle classes aren't included for whatever reason. You sometimes take us as servants or for hard labour you don't want to waste your magic on. I don't know much about magic itself; I saw some levitation spells and some torture things, curses mainly. Nobody care what's going on in the slums. That is all."
"That is more than the ordinary muggle, a non-magical human being knows. Yes, we rule over your world, you are minor human beings in most wizards' eyes. We despise mixing our blood with yours and we use your working force as slaves and servants. Many wizards don't like elves in leading household positions" Green eyes rounded in astonishment at the word elves, "like myself and prefer humans. In the eyes of our world your importance and value is somewhere near cattle. Humans are selfish and crave force in every form. It is forbidden to enslave another wizard or witch but this does not apply to muggles so therefore the bargain I made with your brother is legal"
"You don't treat me like an animal." A trusting smile appeared but it was answered with a sneer.
"I forgot to mention the third category of use we have for your kind: as personal and intimate servants." There was no sign for understanding in the young face, Severus rolled his eyes, sighed and waited until a blush brought some colour to Harry's face.
"Oh."
"Oh indeed." Normally Severus wouldn't display so much patience but he knew that it was important to gain Harry's trust, in the end it wasn't a docile sex-slave he wanted and he had to plan for the future.
"I don't really require a bed partner but you will serve me personally and follow me wherever I will go. I expect you to display the proper behaviour and don't shame me in public. Walters will instruct you. Now go."
At the door Harry turned around. "And what are you doing now?"
"It is nothing of your concern. I dismissed you. Go!"
Outside the door Harry came face to face with Lucius Malfoy who was handing his coat to the butler. Both stared at each other, Harry curiously and the newcomer in astonishment. The younger one bowed politely and wished a good morning.
"Good morning Harry." Lucius had to shake his head, it wasn't his usual style to speak with a low servant but the boy had sparked his interest. "I see that you got your new clothes."
Harry affectionately stroked over the front of his jacket. "They are beautiful but now I don't know what to do with my time. I want to do something for the master but I don't have a clue what. Walters will be busy till the evening"
Lucius shook his head. It was remarkable that his cold and normally nasty friend had inspired such a willingness and adoration. It was pitiful in a way and endearing in another. "If he hasn't given you orders there is nothing you can do." Malfoy stopped and then shrugged his shoulders. " Have you learned to read?"
"Yes. My tutor insisted."
"Hm." The blonde chose a book from a near shelf and handed it to the servant. "It is about history and will help you to cope." If this brat entertained his friend and helped to lighten up the Potions mass mos mood, Lucius saw no harm in helping the boy.
With an eager look Harry bowed, thanked him and then disappeared.
"What is it with this boy. He is more than a simple muggle servant." Lucius served himself some breakfast and joined his friend in the group of stuffed armchairs by the window.
"He is a little jinx. The first of my servants ever to laugh at me."
"A very enlightening incident, I guess."
"Enough with the boy." Severus leaned his head back over the backrest of his armchair and closed his eyes for a little bit. His shoulder long black hair was falling freely and he massaged his temples.
Lucius knew that the other seldomly relaxed like this. Exposing his throat and showing vulnerability was deadly in a society that under all the glamour and fine manners resembled carnivorous beasts more than the superior and sophisticated beings they displayed.
"Do you want to go to Demonico's for Lunch? Nott and Crabbe said that they will be present."
"Even more reason to avoid the club."
"They are your friends."
"Friends are always near when you have influence and money."
Lucius laughed and shook his head. "Should I feel insulted now? I remember a time when you had nothing of the aforementioned. Only a very nasty reputation. Mind you, you still have a very nasty reputation. What was the nickname they gave you? Ah, yes: Satanas."
Severus only shrugged and checked his manicured nails. "Satanas as the companion to Lucifer. How ruthless both of us were. The fault of the youth and something one shouldn't mention too often.
The ones who had money tried to get it to good use and multiply it and the ones who had no money pretended to and lived the same style. Gambling, whoring and other wild plays. Please. Let's change the subject, won't you?"
The rest of the day was spent with light conversation but the evening came soon and it was decided that the two men would make a visit to one of the exclusive gambling hells of magical London. Severus changed into something more elegant. He never wore a garment that wasn't black with the exception of his shirts; it was like a trademark of his. This robe was made of a heavy satin and seemed to swallow the light, accentuating his tall figure and hiding him in shadows at the same time.
In the hall they were awaited by a very nervous Harry with his mask over the face and the gloves on his hands. Green eyes were shining behind the mask. He presented the coats.
"Severus, you cannot be serious! A child has no place in a gambling hell."
"He is mine and I decide what to do with him." Severus repeated arrogantly and took the coat. Thus began Harry Dursley's first evening in the high society of wizarding London.
