IMPORTANT AUTHOR’S NOTE: I must convey my sincerest
apologies for having followed common rumor and not having done my own damned
research into the matter: Ginny Weasley’s real name is not “Virginia” but
“Genevra”, according to J. K. Rowling herself on www.jkrowling.com. I will be keeping her nickname “Nia” for the
duration of the story, as symbolizing the different person she is to
become. Again, my
apologies for having assumed too much on popular opinion. Now.... ON WITH THE
STORY!!!!
Thank you,

9 AM Tuesday morning, early July,
1999, Gatewood House:
Lady Bryn and Brian arrived back at
Gatewood House a little before nine in the morning, and entered the house from
the back door near the kitchen at the same time Magen paid the owl carrying
letters to Nadia and Harry from Remus.
Nadia and Mrs. Weasley heard Magen screeching up in Harry’s room. They looked at each other and jumped up when
Harry twitched for a moment, then stilled.
Chloe and the Weasley clan crashed into the room, clamoring about,
trying to keep an eye on Harry and usher Molly and Nadia out of the room at the
same time.
Successful, Molly and Nadia set
down the stairs quickly, Mrs. Weasley several steps ahead of the huffing
Nadia. Nadia hurried as fast as her pregnancy
allowed her to travel on foot down the back spiral staircase. She was faster than was normal for a normal
woman so advanced into a trimester, but she was still slower than the
unhindered Mrs. Molly Weasley. They both
skidded to a halt at the bottom of the stairs, catching themselves on the wall
of the ground-floor landing before scuttling over to Magen, who stood by the
kitchen table clutching a letter and staring at it with wide, blank eyes.
“Its letters... letters from
Remus,” Magen forced out gustily, clenching and unclenching her jaw. Mrs. Weasley, Brian, Lady Bryn, and Nadia all
crowded around her, trying to read it.
Lady Bryn read it aloud, puzzlement marring her pretty face with a
worried crease in her forehead. Remus’s
neat lettering seamed to tumble off the parchment and drown in Magen’s wild
eyes... captured by Nadia’s emotionless gaze:
My Dear Nadia,
This letter finds us in a most urgent
situation. I regret that I cannot inform
you of this personally, but with the current circumstances as they are, I am
afraid that my loyalties prevent me from being present at your abode
physically.
My dearest friend, our Sirius has had a mild
heart attack. Madame Pomfrey has
pronounced him well enough, however; he is prevented from certain duties for at
least a month. Nadia, I pray you, do
what you will... but please forgive him.
He needs you... and it has been too long. Much too long.
Regretfully but fondly,
Remus J. Lupin
P.S. I have sent a copy of this letter to
Harry. Hope withstanding, I shall have
the opportunity to visit him myself sometime soon. Once again, my regrets...
Nadia inhaled a deep breath, and
sat down with her head in her hands for a moment. Her auburn hair glinted in the kitchen
light. For a moment, it seemed there to
be an angel in her place, tired and world-weary indeed. Nadia raised her head after another deep
sigh, and the moment was cold.
“He has many regrets, that one
does,” she whispered, staring blankly at the letter. Magen met her eyes for a moment, pale and
shaking slightly. The line of her mouth
was set in grimly. Her eyes were
wild.
“Go and pack,” Nadia ordered Magen,
jerking her head in the direction of the back spiral staircase, “There is much
to be done. Brian,
Lady Bryn, you too. Hurry!”
As she passed out of the kitchen,
Magen handed her the copy of letter for Harry.
Mrs. Weasley sat down heavily at the table, at the opposite end of
Nadia. She was staring sadly at the wood
patterns in the surface of the kitchen table.
Nadia watched her for a moment, before turning away and standing
up. Going over to thquorquor cabinet,
she poured Molly Weasley a tumbler of brandy, noting that there was no more
whiskey and only one bottle of vodka left.
Her heart lurched for a second. Oh, Sarah, she thought, If only you’d.... damn. Have your own way then, she thought
sadly, shutting the cabinet quietly. Her
eyes trained automatically over to the shelving, noting the one half-empty
carton of cigarettes.
Turning, she crossed quietly over
to Molly Weasley, and set the drink softly by her side. Molly looked at for a second, before lifting
it in her left hand. She held it in
front of her eyes for a moment, and the light through the alcohol gave her a
yellowish glow. She sighed, and threw
back her head, downing the beverage in one gulp. Nadia was about to leave when Mrs. Weasley
addressed her retreating back.
“What is my daughter doing with
Sarah?” Her voice was tired and
dead. Nadia didn’t turn, and neither did
the other woman. They both stared at
walls.
“I don’t know,” Nadia said finally,
her voice sounding dead and weary as well.
She began to climb the stairs; “But whatever it is.... is good.”
She left Molly contemplating in the
kitchen.
Noon,
Tuesday afternoon, early July 1999, Hogwarts:
Magen held her breath as she
Apparated to Hogwarts, just inside the Forbidden
Forest. The dark trees curved lovingly overhead,
jealously protecting their undergrowth from the sun. Though noontime, the Forest
was cast in twilight and in some places, had turned nearly dark. Through the trees darkly, she could see the
turrets of Hogwarts and the Quidditch Patch.
Disguising a sigh, she lead the way up the hill to the path that lead up
to the castle and around Hagrid’s hut.
Brian, Lady Bryn, and Nadia followed single file behind her. Magen carried no luggage, while the others
each had a small suitcase and Nadia also had an overnight bag. Magen did not plan to stay long. She couldn’t stand to be here that long.
I
wonder how Nadia will do it, she thought emotionlessly. Her cerulean blue eyes watched the path in
front of them. Smoke issued out of
Hagrid’s chimney, but nobody stirred within.
Fang raised his massive head and did nothing. Magen almost smirked, but conserved her
energy. She took the suitcase from Nadia
when she started puffing, and raised her gaze to the castle.
It looked almost foreboding to her,
with the flags flying from the turrets, the towers standing tall and gray, the
drawbridge down and no owls in sight. No
birds sang, no bugs buzzed, no frogs chirped from the wells as the subdued
party passed. Solemnly, they made their
way towards Hogwarts, and finally Magen could make out the form of two greeters
standing on the drawbridge. They stood
just inside the castle. Gray robes
fluttered in the wind, and Magen caught the scent of full moon and night
breeze. Remus Lupin. Her heart nearly stopped, and she distantly
heard Nadia muttering at her back. In
the corner of her mind, she registered her thudding heart. However, she stepped on, keeping her face
mostly down and watching the path as she went along. The other figure, she knew, was Filch the
Caretaker. She had smelled the dust and dank
of un-used hallways and the absence of magic in his aura.
How
desperately I love him, she thought to the path, and Remus J. Lupin will never know it.
I can’t let him know... there can be no fruit where there is no love to
produce from...
And then suddenly she was in front
of him, and had to say something nice and polite and distant. Her gut clenched at the world “distant”.
“Remus,” she nodded to him, and
flinched internally when he merely nodded back.
Nothing in his eyes remarked of joy or relief or otherwise an emotion
she could route towards herself.
“Where is Sirius?” asked Nadia as
she embraced him as well as she could.
Remus’s reaction to her altered appearance cracked his calm exterior.
“Nadia! What the HELL is going
on?!”
“Long story, love, and I’ll tell
you on the way.”
“Nadia...” he said warningly, hands
on her stomach and eyes wide with concern.
“Remus J. Lupin, if you don’t start
hauling ass to Sirius right this second, we’re gonna have SERIOUS
ISSUES! I HAVE WAITED TWELVE GODDAMN
YEARS, AND A LITTLE THING LIKE THIS... okay, not so little... IS GONNA KEEP ME
FROM MY SIRIUS ANY LONGER! FIRST
DUMBLEDORE KEPT HIM FROM ME, THEN THE FUCKING MINISTRY... DON’T YOU TRY THE
SAME THING OR I’LL KILL YOU.”
Remus blinked a few times, and
shook his head. pan>pan>Magen itched to tuck the
stray gold and gray hairs back into place.
“Right,” he said, and ignored
Filch’s snort, “This way then.” He took
Nadia’s arm, nodding to Lady Bryn and Brian behind Magen and Nadia. Magen reached out and took Nadia’s bag as
well, glancing at Filch. He met her gaze
with a sneer, and left her to trail after Remus and Nadia. Lady Bryn and Brian followed silently
behind. Magen brushed irritably at the
hair in her eyes, wishing that she could tell Remus her feelings... and knowing
the damage that would lie in the fields should she even try. If
they’re familiar enough for the voice to register as familiar, they’re familiar
enough to understand. Everyone else is
un-important.
Magen unzipped her leather jacket,
and replaced her sunglasses on her face.
She checked her guns one last time, and her poisons. She was better with poisons than her guns,
but still good enough to pass Sarah’s approval.
Deliberately, she dug out a box of cigarettes and put one in her
mouth. She paused just inside the Castle
Gate, struck a match, and lit up with care.
Filch was watching her.
She blew out smoke, relishing the
calming rush of nicotine in her system.
Honestly, she had to quit sometime.
Magen absently threw the used match away, having already put it out with
her fingers. She finished walking to the
Forbidden Forest,
and Apparated to Hogsmeade.
Sarah was waiting for her outside
the Shrieking Shack. No vehicle was in
sight, and she had Arabella Figg with her.
She looked like hell and the hounds in a hand basket. Her face was tight and drawn, pale,
lifeless. Only her eyes seemed alive,
and the spark had dulled slightly... as it did in times like these... in times
like these, when she had to become what she hated.
Sarah nodded stiffly in greeting,
her nose trickling a tiny bit of blood.
Magen suddenly felt too clean, and kissed her sister hello on the
cheek. The skin was cold to the touch,
sweaty, and smelt of dirt and ash. The
faint tang of old fire invaded Magen’s mouth, and left when she exhaled too
loudly.
Magen put an arm around Arabella,
and the three walked off to where Sarah had parked her truck. It looked like it had been fixed by Derek
again. As they neared it, Magen sensed
his magic coming off it in waves. Sarah
slipped silently into the passenger seat, Arabella in the middle, and Magen
took the driver’s seat. Arabella looked
confused for a moment, and looked as though she desperately wanted to say
something. She kept her mouth closed
when Sarah took a healthy swig from a bottle that smelled like her caffeine and
vodka combination.
Magen took the keys from the visor,
adjusted the mirrors, and turned the car on.
Sarah downed some new painkillers and six
Tylenol PM. Sarah sighed
then, put her sunglasses back on, stretched her battered frame, and slept. Magen drove, heading around Hogsmeade. She kept the windows down, and made sure to
keep as much of the cigarette smoke away from Mrs. Figg as possible.
If Sarah had entrusted the driving
to Magen, and had actually decided to sleep, then God knew what lay ahead of
them in the only place they could logically be heading... Gatewood House.
9 PM
at Hogwarts, Tuesday, early July of 1999:
Remus Lupin wandered into the
Gryffindor Common Room after dinner in the Great Hall, and collapsed into a
great armchair. The two that had been
introduced to him as Brian and Lady Bryn trailed in after him. Nadia was staying behind in the Great Hall
for a little while, Sirius, Minerva McGonagall, and surprisingly enough, both
Dumbledore and Severus Snape had stayed behind as well. He hoped that it didn’t dissolve into another
argument, like the one they’d had as soon as Dumbledore learned that they were
here, and that Nadia was pregnant.
Gods, Nadia... Nadia preggers
at that! By rape no less... he felt his
blood boil at the thought. Sirius had
been too stunned by the mere sight of Nadia to ask questions... but Remus had a
feeling that it wouldn’t matter to either of them who the father was. In the end, he felt certain that Sirius would
be all the father Nadia’s child could desire.
It was good that the two of them could be together again. Thank God for moments of love in a time full
of war.
“You two go on ahead,” Remus
motioned for Brian and Bryn to depart, “I feel like some pondering before I
retire. You two had a long trip, even if
it was Apparating.” Brian nodded his head,
the firelight sparking off his short blonde hair. Lady Bryn flashed a smile at him before
following Brian. She was pretty. He liked her, but saw the way she and Brian
teased each other mercilessly. He would
leave well enough alone then.
Remus stared into the flames, all
thoughts lost; merely allowing the flames to exist in his mind’s eye. His mind itself, however, was empty. He got up after about twenty minutes, when the
Castle Clock chimed the hour of nine. It
was still fairly early, he mused as he poured himself and Sirius each a shot of
vodka. He could hear him and Nadia
walking slowly down the hall, as it was nearing a full moon and his senses were
beginning to heighten. They were talking
in low voices.
When they entered, they had their
arms about each other, glowing. Neither
smiled, laughed, nor sparkled; they merely glowed in a way that centers on the
comforts one takes from a loved one.
“Dumbledore still won’t listen to
me,” Nadia said, her eyes solemn as she looked at the shot glass with a touch
of longing. Remus gave the drink to
Sirius, who downed it in one gulp.
“Are you surprised at all?” Sirius
said bitterly, placing the glass on the mantelpiece. Nadia shook her head, her expression
neutral.
“What do you plan on doing?” Remus
asked them. He sipped his vodka slowly,
welcoming the burn down his throat.
Nadia stared into the flames, her eyes going beyond their color and
dance. Sirius stared at the floor.
“I can’t do much of anything right
now,” she said quietly, one hand on her stomach, “But there are others who can. Despite Dumbledore, we will fight. We will do our own part, in our own way. I hope he realizes that this time, he’ll have
to give in.”
“What do you mean?” Remus asked
her, sharing a confused glance with Sirius.
Both men watched her expectedly.
She ignored that.
“I mean look what happened last
time. Last time,” she continued as if
she hadn’t heard them at all, “He denied us everything, even each other.” She squeezed Sirius’s hand briefly. Remus understood this.
“And look what happened,”
she said without tone, “Voldemort came back.
He was weakened, oh yes, but not for long. Voldemort came back, and this is our chance
to get him, while he’s still gathering strength. And Dumbledore won’t listen... he won’t hear
anything about joining forces. He says,”
Nadia tossed her head disdainfully, “He said that he wouldn’t join
forces with a lesser evil to defeat a bigger evil.”
“He what?”
Remus couldn’t believe his ears, dog-keen as they were at the moment. Sirius nodded solemnly.
“It doesn’t matter anymore,” Nadia
sighed, “At least this time, he’s decided that I
at least am no threat. It all falls to
the others now. The rest of the House
should be easy enough to organize, since we’ve all got cell phones and
computers. I just hope that Sarah and
Magen can make it to the rest of our people.”
If Sirius was surprised by the
mention of Magen, he didn’t show it.
Remus himself felt his eyes widen at the mention of her name, and his
ears perk up of their own accord. He
tried to remember Magen, and stunned himself for a second when he came up with
an incredibly clear picture of a woman with long black hair, a face nearly
identical to Sarah’s, and clear blue eyes.
Interesting...
“This time we’ll have an
advantage... but still, so has he,” Nadia was saying.
“What?” Sirius asked her curiously.
“He knows who we are now,” she said
steadily, “He knows patched of our network, and can easily strike out at them without
question or pause.”
“Yeah,” said Sirius thoughtfully, “You
did tell us that he nearly got Arabella Figg.”
“Nearly,” she agreed, nodding her
head, “And Sarah’s got to be a holy wreck already, and he’s barely even started
playing the game again. It’s like we’re
starting right in the middle of where we were years ago. Knee-deep in big kimchee.”
They were silent for a while, lost
in their own thoughts. Remus could
barely stand the pressure of his own, and sought neutrality in the flames
dancing at the hearth. He finished his
vodka. When he looked around, he noticed
that Nadia and Sirius had both left. He
sighed, and stayed where he was for a long time. And when he finally sat down and drifted off
on one of the couches, his last thoughts danced with fires of a different tune.
