The room was dimly lit and the sun going down behind the trees outside the closed window cast a light orange glow in the room. Severus Snape sat behind his old wooden desk in his summer home. The house was small and a bit dusty; He was only ever there in the summer anyway and he was the only one living in the place so it didn't matter how it looked. It was just perfect for him. There weren't any other homes for miles and Severus enjoyed his privacy. The summer was appearing dim and boring. Besides the frequent Order meetings and Deatheater get together's Severus found his time alone, in his home, in blissful solitude. Life was quaint.
He hated when Molly or one of the other order members commented on his life, pointing out that he seemed lonely and that he should stay and enjoy the company of his fellow colleagues. Severus chuckled at the though. He had no one and needed no one. Life was less complicated without the presence of others, and he didn't need anymore complications.
There had been the few brushes with 'happiness' (as ignorant young people would call it) in his life, but nothing lasted. It was dangerous for anyone to get close to him. And even more dangerous, in his mind, to get close to anyone. What with The Dark Lord being back, and still being consider one of his faithful servants, Severus held an undesirable life. Why would anyone want to be caught up in it? Everyday Severus waited to feel his scar burn, calling him back to the man he pretended to call master. And every time he stood before him, he wondered if this would be the day The Dark Lord decided to kill him. There was this funny feeling inside him then, when he thought about: Would it be so bad to end it all?
Sure life was risky for Severus, but he didn't really care. He had finally gotten his life right, working for the order, doing something for the greater good, and it was nice to know that he had some control over his life. But there was the fact that at any moment his true position could be found out and a swarm of deatheaters, ones he one worked along side for so long, could come out and kill him. At least he could die knowing he tried to fix the mistakes he made. His whole life was a mistake, he was a mistake. A series of random and punishable events, one right after the other, proving to the world just what his father had always said: You are a screw up Severus!
He knew his life was screwed up, and that the world would hbeenbeen better off had he not been born. At least then the lives of innocents would have been spared and the students and his colleagues wouldn't have had to have endure his dreadful presence. Severus wasn't blind to the things people said about him, to the whispers and stares, so he figured 'why not give them a reason to hate me?' He kept up his hard-ass act, snapping at everyone and everything. And soon there was no one to challenge him, Dumbledore being the acceptation. Severus respected the old man and in a way looked up to him. When the Dark Lord fell the first time and Severus searched for a life to go back to Albus offered him one. True Severus never imagined that teaching adolescencents could be any worst then serving an evil tyrant, but it was a step up and in the right direction. And Severus grew accustomed to his dungeon and potions. Being Head of Slytherin didn't hurt any either.
Thinking of where he came from, where he went and where he is now, Severus had to admit that things turned out alright for him, even if he knew he didn't deserve it.
Leaning back in his high leather chair Severus concentrated on the words in the book. Only a week into the summer holiday and he had already read a third of his library. All he had to do was read and wait, wait to either be called by the order or by the deatheaters. He attempted to relax but had still not grown used to it. How one could waste a day away Severus did not know. He was going crazy, waiting for some call to come and throw him into action. Though he didn't believe it he didn't have to wait long. The grandfather clock in his study rang out in a crashing thump, the signal from the order calling for a meeting. Severus took his time setting his book back in the empty space among the shelves. He took his coat from the hook by the door and carefully buttoned it up before apparating out of the room to the street of Grimmauld Place
I should have the next part up tonight or tomorrow.
