Ginny had been the first person awake every single morning
since her first year. No matter how late she went to sleep, waking up at ten
minutes to five had become a habit she couldn't break.
"It's foolish to waste such time sleeping," he always told her.
"You'll gain an advantage over all the other undisciplined students who stay
unconscious and unawares as long as they possibly can," he instructed her as if
he were one of her professors.
She walked in the dark to the bathroom, navigating the Burrow by pure memory,
until she reached the bathroom and could splash some cold water on her face. By
now, Ginny couldn't have slept past five without a potion to knock her
unconscious. She grabbed for a towel blindly and blotted her face.
"You know I was right to train you into early mornings."
Ginny lowered the towel and looked into the mirror at the neatly pressed and
handsome boy standing behind her. "Shut up, Tom."
"Tsk, tsk. I'm only trying to help you," he said while adjusting his collar and
smoothing down his dark hair needlessly. "After all, what is of benefit to you
is of benefit to me."
Ginny snorted. "You mean like when you talked me into opening the Chamber of
Secrets and then almost killed me?"
"That was different." He affected a look of grievous hurt.
"I was trapped inside that god-awful book."
She rolled her eyes at the nonexistent person next to her.
"I was bored to tears. No one to talk to." His voice lowered into a sultry tone
as he gazed into her eyes and raised his hand to lazily caress her face. "And
now I live inside you. You've brought such meaning to my life."
"You're not alive," Ginny reminded him dully. "Now go away while I take my
shower."
Tom smirked. "I can always see you, even when you can't see me."
Her spine stiffened reflexively. Ginny hated the way Tom could always play with
her emotions, drawing reactions from her whether she wanted him to or not, and
recently he'd stumbled upon a whole new way of taunting her. "If you don't at
least give me the illusion of privacy, I swear that I'll go back to bed right
now and won't get up till afternoon all summer even if I have to lie there
completely awake," Ginny threatened him.
Tom made a small huffing noise, but disappeared after a couple of seconds,
allowing Ginny to carry on with her morning routine.
When she finally stumbled downstairs to start breakfast, Harry was waiting at
the table, slumped over a cold cup of tea.
"You're up early," he mumbled, looking up at her with
bleary eyes.
"You never even went to bed, did you?"
"Went to bed, didn't sleep."
"Went to bed, didn't sleep," Tom mimicked Harry,
seemingly propped up against the sink. "You keep that up Potter and I won't
have to murder you."
Ginny ignored him. It never did do to let on that you
might be seeing and hearing things that weren't there when anyone else was
around. "I'll make you some fresh tea," Ginny volunteered moving around Harry
and through Tom to fill up the kettle which activated itself once she set it on
the stove.
"Sorry about the row last night," Harry apologized.
"It wasn't your fault," Ginny lied.
"He's going to kill your brother and his mudblood
girlfriend," Tom taunted.
Ginny flinched. "Besides now that you've been the center
of a Weasley argument, you're no longer a guest, but an official a member of the
family."
Harry laughed. "So that's what it takes."
"The tension needed to be broken anyway and Mum needed to
have a good cry. Pretending everything's just perfect when it's not is no way
to go about things."
"Now, now," Tom chided, whispering in her ear despite the
fact that Harry couldn't hear him, "It's the way we go about things."
Harry gave a noncommittal grunt.
The kettle whistled and Ginny poured two cups of tea. She
sat down at the table next to Harry and put one in front of him. "Are you
really planning to go after Voldemort?"
He looked at her with veiled eyes.
"Go on Potter, I so want to hear what you're
planning," Tom sneered from Harry's other side.
"I mean -" Ginny spoke, "I don't want to know the details."
Harry nodded. "I'm going to continue what I was doing with
Dumbledore."
Ginny was amused to note that Tom flinched at Dumbledore's
name, even now when the old wizard was dead and resting in his tomb.
An uncomfortable silence settled over the kitchen. There
wasn't really anything they had left to talk about – or could talk about. They
weren't about to discuss Tom and subjects like Quidditch no longer seemed
important enough to bother talking about. It wasn't as if Harry was going to be
playing anymore.
Rays from the rising sun slowly illuminated the kitchen and
an owl swept into the room, dropping the Daily Prophet in front of them and
blowing the candle in the middle of the table out in the process. Harry
snatched up the paper before Ginny could get a good glimpse at it.
She tried to read his face instead and saw only hatred and
pain as his eyes furiously scanned back and forth over the front page.
"What is it?"
He dropped the paper in front of her and shoved back from
the table, leaving without a word. She grabbed the paper and read the article
plastered over the front page.
Malfoy Manor
Burned to the Ground in the Wake of Hogwarts Attack
Aurors arrived at Malfoy Manor shortly
after the horrific attack at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, which
left the much revered Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore dead, to find
the Manor consumed in flames. Sources indicated that Draco Malfoy, 16, had
been largely responsible for the Hogwarts attack and is himself a Death
Eater. Severus Snape, who has taught at Hogwarts for several years and who
recently acquired the Defense Against the Dark Arts position, is also rumored
to be an active Death Eater. While the Ministry has released no official
announcements on the events surrounding the horrific attack, Severus Snape is
said to have been the one to murder Albus Dumbledore.
Ministry officials
successfully extinguished the fire and reported the death of Narcissa Black
Malfoy. While no further details of this incident has been released, my
sources claim that Mrs. Malfoy was not only dead at the time of the fire, but
her body in fact showed evidence of reanimation through dark magic.
"Isn't that interesting?" Tom snickered, reading over
Ginny's shoulder. "Looks like the Malfoys have managed to wind up as enemies of
both sides this time."
"Maybe – "
"Ginny dear, who are you talking to?" her Mum asked,
shuffling into the kitchen in her dress robe.
"No one Mum, I was just reading the paper." Ginny affected
her most innocent expression.
"Remind her of the wedding this afternoon," Tom suggested.
"I can make breakfast this morning if you want," Ginny
offered. "I know you have a lot to do today with Bill and Fluer."
"Oh yes," Molly started to wring her hands nervously. "I
have to make sure everything gets setup properly and your father's suppose to be
bringing extra chairs in this morning for in the garden. But there are a lot of
people to cook for this morning – "
"Apologize for last night," Tom advised her.
"I can do it, really," Ginny urged her mother, "and I know
that I shouldn't have behaved the way I did last night and I'm sorry."
She could see her mother caving in the expression on her
face. "Well, I suppose...," she smiled softly at Ginny. "You're growing up so
fast." Her Mum gave Ginny a kiss on the cheek and disappeared upstairs.
Tom clapped. "Well done. Now you get to play house elf to
all your retched family members and their plebian friends." He chuckled and
swatted her on the backside. "Better get that fire started darling."
"Dumbledore," Ginny said sweetly and watched Tom jump.
"What about him?" he growled.
"Nothing. I just like saying the name," she replied
sweetly. "Dumbledore."
She glanced up to see that Tom had disappeared to wherever he vanished when she
couldn't see him. "Works every time," she muttered as she started the fire
and began to prepare breakfast.
