CHAPTER THREE
A month had passed since the attack on Little Whinging and Daniel hadn't gotten any more calls from old friends. The owls that had shown up at Jack's place had slowly disappeared. Daniel tried not to believe it was because he hadn't shown up there since Jack had told him about the owls. He realized then that the spell that he had used to cover his magical signature was deteriorating. He needed to do the spell again to make sure that he would never be found. It was the only thing that would explain the sudden call from Hermione and the owls. He had lived the last month with a sense of dread that he would be found. Luckily, the month had been full of missions and he'd had the opportunity to renew the spell. He had waited warily, but soon realized that he was safe again. No one could find him and he needed to be sure that the spell didn't deteriorate again.
Daniel had finally translated the language that SG-10 had found on PX5-583. Jack had taken him out to dinner and spent the night over at Daniel's place to celebrate. Daniel's body warmed as he remembered the night of passion between the two of them. He squirmed slightly in his chair and looked up at Jack, who was staring at him with a naughty grin on his face. Daniel frowned at him repressively, but Jack just gave him a smug look. Daniel knew that Jack knew exactly what he had been thinking about.
There was a knock at the door and Daniel got up from the couch to answer it. He opened the door and did everything in his power not to gasp aloud in shock. His face carefully blank, he looked at the young woman standing before him.
"Er"¦can I help you?" Daniel asked politely.
Hermione Malfoy looked up at him and said softly, "Harry?"
Daniel frowned in confusion. "Excuse me?" he asked.
"Harry, is that you?" she asked pleadingly.
"I think you have the wrong person, miss. My name is Dr. Daniel Jackson."
"Harry, please. It's me, Hermione. I know its you, Harry" Hermione said softly.
"Look, Hermione was it? I don't know who you think I am, but I'm not this Harry you seem to think I am. I've been Daniel Jackson all my life," Daniel said coolly.
"It's a glamour, Harry. I would know you anywhere," Hermione said firmly.
Daniel sighed in annoyance. "Okay, I know I'm not Harry. I'm Daniel Jackson. I'm an Archaeologist and a Linguist. I was born on July 8, 1965 and I work for the Military. So whoever you seem to think I am, I'm not."
Hermione bit her lip in uncertainty. She looked at Daniel intently. She opened her mouth to say something, but was interrupted by Jack's voice coming from behind Daniel.
"Danny? Is everything ok?" Jack asked.
Daniel nodded. "This woman seems to think I'm someone named Harry. I tried to tell that I'm Daniel Jackson, but she refuses to believe me," Daniel replied.
Jack came up behind him and looked over his shoulder at Hermione. He gave Hermione an assessing look before snorting. "I don't know who you seem to think he is, but he is definitely Daniel Jackson."
Hermione glared at him. "Who are you?" she demanded.
Jack arched an eyebrow. "Rather snotty little thing aren't you?" he asked idly.
Daniel held in a grin as he watched Hermione's face become outraged. Jack had a way with woman, men and well, aliens. He couldn't be called diplomatic. He spoke his mind, regardless of whom he offended.
"Well?" Hermione asked impatiently.
"The name is Jack O'Neill, General Jack O'Neill, United States Air Force. And you are?" Jack asked sarcastically.
Hermione gaped at him a moment before replying. "I'm Hermione Malfoy."
"Pleasure, I'm sure," Jack drawled.
Daniel snorted in amusement and Jack looked at him with a grin. "Now, what's this about Daniel being someone else?" he asked.
"I'm pretty sure that he is someone I know by the name of Harry Potter," Hermione said.
Jack laughed in amusement. "Miss, I don't know where you got your information from, but this is and has always been Daniel Jackson. He works for the Military and we do a very extensive and thorough background check. This man is no one but Daniel Jackson. You need to go back to wherever you came from and leave this poor man alone. If you continue to stalk him, I'll have your ass in a cell so fast your head will spin. The Military doesn't take kindly to someone harassing their own," Jack said coldly.
"But"¦" Hermione began.
Daniel shook his head at Hermione's persistence. He missed his friend, but there was no way in hell he was going back to the Wizarding World. He knew that this had something to do with the attack on Little Whinging. He wasn't going to be used as a weapon again. He was going to stay right here and do his own thing. The Wizarding World was on their own. They could find a new Savior.
"Look, miss, I'm sorry that you're so desperate to find your friend that you need to think that I'm this Harry, but I've worked with the Military for nine years now and you can bet that if they even thought I was someone else, they would be throwing my ass into jail. I'm sorry I'm not who you seem to think I am, but I'm not," Daniel said softly.
Hermione deflated. Her eyes filled with tears and she sniffed softly. "I was so sure. I had evidence and everything, but if you've worked with the Military for nine years then you can't be him. He disappeared five years ago. I just wanted to find my friend," she said quietly.
"I'm sorry, I really am. I wish I could help you," Daniel said quietly.
Hermione shrugged. "No, it's my fault. I'm sorry to have bothered you." She gave Daniel a wan smile and left.
Daniel closed the door softly and turned to look at Jack, a troubled look on his face.
"You all right, Danny?" Jack asked in concern.
Daniel shrugged. "Yea, it's just sad to see someone so desperate."
Jack pulled him into his arms and hugged him. "She'll be fine. I'm sure that she'll find her friend eventually."
Daniel leaned into Jack. That's what I'm afraid of, he thought to himself.
Three weeks later Daniel was walking down the corridor of the base, reading a file about their next mission. There was evidence of an Ancient base on PX5 219 and SG-1 and SG-5 were going to check it out. There was no evidence of natives, but that could be misleading.
"Hey, Dr. Jackson," a voice called out.
Daniel stopped and turned around. Lt. Colonel Cameron Mitchell, the new CO of SG-1 was jogging down the corridor. He liked Mitchell. He rather reminded him of Jack and he was damn attractive. If Daniel didn't have Jack, he might've taken his chance with Mitchell. He was just glad that Jack hadn't taken that job in Washington. He couldn't imagine anyone else being in charge of the SGC.
"What do you need, Mitchell?" he asked curiously.
"Oh not much. Just wondering what you were doing," Mitchell asked, his blue eyes twinkling with humor.
Daniel wondered idly as he looked into the man's eyes if Jack would like to have a three-some. He shook the thought from his head. It's was one thing to sleep with Jack, but it was another to sleep with Cameron, no matter how good looking the man was.
"I was just on my way to talk to Jack. I was reading the file for our new mission tomorrow. What are you doing?" Daniel asked.
Mitchell shrugged. "Nothing much. Just wandering around the base. Hey, you want to play some basketball later?" Mitchell asked.
Daniel thought about it before nodding. "Sure, I'd like that. I need to talk to Jack, but I'll join you as soon as I can. I'll come find you," Daniel said.
"Cool," Mitchell said. "I'll see you then." He turned and walked off and Daniel admired the man's ass.
"Sadly, the man is straight," a voice whispered into his ear. Daniel jumped and turned around quickly before relaxing.
"Jack, don't do that," he said in annoyance.
"Admiring the view?" Jack asked mischievously.
Daniel shrugged. "It looks good. I'm thinking of trading in for a newer model," he said seriously.
"Hey!" Jack said in mock outrage.
Daniel laughed. "You know if you had a chance, you would be all over him," Daniel said.
Jack sighed mournfully. "That is so true. I think I need someone who will actually obey me."
Daniel leaned in and said softly, "I can obey you, in the right circumstances." He pulled back and watched as Jack's eyes dilated with lust.
"Danny," Jack groaned softly. "Not here."
Daniel smirked at his best friend. "Come on, I want to talk to you about the new mission."
Jack groaned in annoyance. "Fine," he grumbled. The walked towards Jack's office, deep in discussion about the upcoming mission.
Hours later, Daniel finally made it off the base. He was exhausted and he needed a good night sleep. He yawned widely as he parked his car and got out. He stumbled into the lobby of his apartment building and made his way to the elevator. He leaned against the door of the elevator and closed his eyes. He sighed in exhaustion. Who knew it would be so tiring translating a foreign language.
The elevator stopped and he got out. He walked to his door, got out his keys and made his way into his apartment. He turned on the lights and headed for the kitchen. He placed his keys on the counter and grabbed a glass. He heard a noise behind him and turned around quickly, only to be met with a flash of light then darkness.
Daniel fell to the ground and the glass shattered as it hit the floor. A figure stood over Daniel and stared down at the downed man.
"I don't know who you think you were fooling Harry, but I would know you anywhere," Hermione said as she pulled out a portkey and they both disappeared.
