Chapter 3
Draco woke the next morning and immediately turned to face Harry’s bed. He had been hoping to
catch the boy in an unguarded moment, but the bed was empty and it looked as if Harry had fought
a war with his sheets and the bedding lost. Draco slowly got out of his bed and got dressed for the
day ahead. He was unsure what it would bring but the sight of Harry’s bed so disarranged had him
worried. He had been told, in a way, the previous day when he finally found Professor Snape and
Headmaster Dumbledore what was going on with Harry when he and Pansy had arrived. After the
three of them had left to discuss what had brought them to Order Headquarters, Professor Snape had
clarified what exactly had happened after Pansy had bugged him about it.
Draco was afraid that something major had happened with Voldemort and possibly his and Pansy’s
parents last night and that was the reason that Harry was not in his bed this morning. ‘There’s only
one way for you to find out for sure though. You need to get your arse downstairs and find out what
you’re supposed to do today.’ With that thought in mind Draco walked down the stairs and entered
the kitchen to see a very weary looking Professor Snape and Harry Potter sitting at the table
conversing in low tones.
“Good morning Professor, Harry. Are you alright this morning, Harry? I got a little worried when
you weren’t in your bed this morning.” Draco said then blushed and turned away. He could not
believe he had just let that last sentence slip. He really did not need Potter finding out that he was in
love with him. It would probably disgust him anyway.
“Everything is fine Draco. I just didn’t sleep well last night. I hope I didn’t wake you.” Harry
replied trying to stifle a yawn. Harry had in fact barely slept at all. Voldemort was quite angry that
Draco and Pansy had gotten away earlier that day and was determined that someone would feel his
wrath. He had decided to plan a raid on The Burrow. That’s what he had been discussing with his
father when Draco walked in. Harry had been privy to it all due to the connection to Voldemort
through his scar.
“No, I never heard a thing, I tend to sleep rather deeply. Even if someone was screaming themselves
hoarse, it wouldn’t wake me. After the parties my father used to throw, I got rather used to sleeping
through anything.” Draco replied not looking at either man, not wanting to see the disgust on their
faces at the mention of his father. “So, what is planned for today? I mean we only have a couple of
weeks before we have to go back to Hogwarts and I know that neither Pansy or I have our school
supplies yet. Is there anyway we could go to Diagon Alley?” Draco asked trying to change the
subject and maybe brighten the mood.
“Draco, the Headmaster and I feel that for you and Miss Parkinson to leave Grimmauld Place at this
time would be unwise. However, Harry and Miss Granger also still need their school supplies. I
believe that Molly Weasley was going to take her brood to Diagon Alley today to get Harry and
Miss Granger’s supplies as well as their own. If you would like I could have her pick up yours and
Miss Parkinson’s as well.” Professor Snape said softly so as to not upset the boy in front of him.
“I believe that would be acceptable sir. In that case, what would you suggest Pansy and I do here all
day, sir?”
“Work on the reason you asked for Harry and Miss Granger’s help, and the reason you are here in
the first place. To find a way out of your marriage to Miss Parkinson. Keep in mind that whatever
you choose to do, there will be trouble from the Dark Lord and your parents, Lucius in particular. I
have left some books sitting out on the desk in my study. Harry, if you would go get them when you
are done with breakfast, it would be appreciated. Now, I need to get back to Hogwarts to finishing
preparing for the upcoming term. I shall see you all this evening.” With that Snape strode to the
fireplace and was gone.
Draco looked toward Harry before speaking again. “I hate to ask this, but where would I be able to
find something to eat?”
“Oh, sorry Draco, I wasn’t even thinking about that. Dobby!” There was a small crack and then a
house-elf stood before Harry. “Good morning, Dobby. Would you be so kind as to fix Draco and I
something for breakfast. Anything in particular, Draco?” Draco shook his head in the negative
while staring at the house-elf who was returning the stare.
“Master Harry, why is Dobby’s old master Draco here. He is a bad wizard, just like his father.”
“No, he is not Dobby. He doesn’t want to be like his father so he came here for protection. Wait,
did you just say he was your old master? I thought Lucius was your master.”
“No, Dobby was specifically assigned to Master Draco but had to answer to all the Malfoys.”
“So, then Draco sent you to warn me in 2nd year and to try and stop me from going to Hogwarts?”
Dobby looked to Draco who was glaring at him by now, before he answered that question.
“Yes, Master Harry. It was Master Draco that sent me to you. I was never supposed to tell you. He
didn’t want anyone to know he was trying to help Harry Potter. I will go fix your breakfast now.”
With that Dobby moved over to the stove to begin fixing breakfast for everyone in the house. Harry
looked back to Draco at the new revelation.
“I thought you hated me back then, why would you have sent Dobby to warn me?”
“I may have hated you, but I hated what my father was trying to do even more. Growing up my
father was always a bastard. Severus used to tell me stories of what it was like to serve under the
Dark Lord. He also told me stories of when they were children in school. It wasn’t until my father
joined that creature’s cause that he became the way he is now. According to Severus he was much
different growing up, much more caring. My mother has even told me stories of before my father
joined the Death Eaters. He really used to love her and me I suppose. It was probably even him that
put that clause in the marriage contract that if either of us had children by the end of our 7th year it
would be null and void. He was probably still trying to give me a way out.”
“He was also firmly reminded of how easily a seventeen year old boy’s attention can wander.” Both
boys jumped as Severus stepped out of the fire. He looked at Harry before speaking again. “It was
as bad as you had feared.”
“How many?” Harry asked in a croaky voice.
“For what ever reason they were all there. None were seriously injured though a few on the other
side were captured and two were killed.”
“Thank Merlin. Where are they all going to stay? The house was destroyed right?”
“Unfortunately, yes. They are salvaging what they can and then they will all be staying here. That
was the main reason I had returned. I wanted to let you know to expect all of them before long.
Also Dumbledore has told them that the sleeping arrangements are not to change from what they are
currently meaning that the two of you will be sharing that room for the rest of the summer while
Miss Parkinson and Miss Granger will also have to continue sharing their room.” Draco had just
stared at his god-father the whole time he was talking to Harry, wondering what in the world was
going on.
“Apparently the Dark Lord decided he needed a bit of a distraction last night after yourself and Miss
Parkinson managed to slip from his grasp. He attacked The Burrow, which is the home of the
Weasley’s. It shouldn’t be much longer before they all get here. Could you have Dobby prepare
enough food for them as well. I don’t believe that they have had a chance for anything this
morning.” Severus answered Draco’s unasked question then turned to Harry for his request.
“I’m sure Dobby would be delighted to have more people to serve. Of course as soon as Molly gets
here, she’ll take over the kitchen and Dobby will have nothing to do.” Harry shook his head
imagining the scene to come. “Before I forget to ask, who were the Death Eaters that were captured
and killed?”
“There were 5 that were captured. It was Lucius and Narcissa Malfoy, Peter Pettigrew, Antonin
Dolohov, and Rudolphus Lestrange. Bellatrix Lestrange and Rabastan Lestrange were the ones that
were killed.” Severus told them softly.
There was a slight tightening around Harry’s eyes and mouth when Pettigrew and Bellatrix were
named, other than that there was no reaction till he spoke next. “If only this had been two years ago.
Who actually killed her?”
“I believe it was Bill that cast the curse on her.” Severus said with a slight smile.
“Ah, well, Bill and I have always got on extraordinarily well. Remind me to think him when he gets
here for getting rid of that scum, even though I wanted to do it myself. Oh, well. Anyway, was
there anything else you needed to inform us of da- Professor, or were you going to return to
Hogwarts?” Harry asked, stumbling over the last of the sentence as he reminded himself that Draco
did not yet know about his relationship with the professor.
“I did need to speak with Draco for just a moment. Would you mind seeing if Miss Granger and
Miss Parkinson are up yet? I would like for them to be aware of the situation before the Weaselys
arrive.” Harry gave a nod of acknowledgment before walking over to Dobby and explaining that
there would be several more for breakfast. He then left the kitchen to go check on the girls.
“What did you need to speak to me for, Professor?” Draco asked incredibly curious as to why his
parents had been captured and what his godfather could possibly want now.
“There is something about the attack that I think you should know before the Weasley’s get here.
According to reports that have been given to Dumbledore, your parents did not even fight being
captured. However, we are unsure as to whether it was by choice or not. What I mean to say is that
they could have allowed themselves to be captured to get away from Voldemort and keep him from
using them against you or it could have been Voldemort that ordered them to allow themselves to be
captured as a punishment or a way to lure you to them. I want you to be very careful Draco. We
don’t know what Voldemort may decide to do in order to get you and Miss Parkinson back into the
fold as it were.”
“I know sir. I have already told Harry and the others that I want nothing to do with my parents any
longer. If given the chance they would both turn me over to the Dark Lord without a second
thought.” Draco said with a touch of bitterness in his voice. Severus merely nodded in acceptance of
the statement. Nothing more was said between the two as they waited for the others to return to the
kitchen. When they did appear, Severus made his way back towards the fireplace.
“I shall see you all at dinner tonight. Behave yourselves today. Harry don’t forget to get those
books for Draco after breakfast.” With that he was gone. The teens sat in silence till the floo once
again flared green and the Weasley’s began to arrive. They quickly helped them to get settled in and
then ate the breakfast that had been prepared.
As soon as breakfast was over, Draco approached Mrs. Weasley to find out if they were still
planning on going to Diagon Alley.
“Of course we are, dear. Now I know that you and Pansy are not allowed out of Grimmauld Place.
Professor Snape asked me to pick up your books as well, so not to worry. We’ll be back by
dinnertime I’m sure. Was there anything else you needed?” Molly asked when she noticed Draco
looking uneasy.
“I was just wondering if you needed any money to help pay for everything. I feel kind of responsible
about your house and all your stuff being destroyed. It was because of me and Pansy that
Voldemort planned that raid.” Draco said in a quiet voice.
“Don’t be silly dear, there was no way that you and Pansy could have known what He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named would do after you got away yesterday. Don’t worry about the money either.
Professor Snape gave me some money for yours and Pansy’s school material. Now I need to get
going. I will see you tonight dear.” With that the Weasley’s were gone to Diagon Alley.
