Disclaimer: I do not own Harry Potter, nor any of the characters from the books or movies. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
AN: It’s
late, I know, but it’s here. I have tweaked Dumbledore’s personality a bit, but
merely because I don’t think he’d be so carefree and easy going when Voldemort
first appears, plus I always felt he was a bit of a soft touch. So apologies
now if any of you don’t like the change, it really is for the good of the story
though, I promise.
Chapter
Two
Raucous laughter exploded in the great hall,
drowning out shouts from teachers and seeming to help the escape of the four prime
suspects to the crime. Sirius flew down the corridor, fingers clasping Remus’
resolutely as they dodged away the hexes flying from Snape’s
scarlet red lips. James screaming ahead of them, only just turning the corner
on the steps through holding onto the banister and letting his momentum sweep
him round. Peter bouncing along behind them, breath
hard gasps.
James let loose one hell of a cry before
promptly smacking into Professor McGonagall. Landing with a
faint ‘omf’ onto his rump, feeling just a touch
queasy and looking more than a little grey from the sudden stop.
Pinning the quartet with a sharp look,
McGonagall stepped around them and began to walk along the corridor, heading
towards her office. “Follow me gentlemen.”
Trudging behind, Sirius fought to contain his
snickers, whilst James slowly regained some colour much slower than Peter was
loosing his. Remus just shook his head, lips twitching with the effort not to
smile, and finally wrenching his hand loose from Sirius’ now lax grip.
They drew to a halt before a towering griffin,
wings spread as if ready to take off in flight. Sirius drew up next to James,
Remus appearing on his other side, whilst Peter seemed to shrink behind them,
eyes darting side to side for an escape route.
“Sugar Quills.”
Even now the sudden movement made the boys
jump, although perhaps a good deal of that was attributed to their nerves.
Ushered on before Professor McGonagall, the boys trudged up the steps, James
knocking Peter’s hand as he went to maul the poor over bitten nails.
The heavy wooden door was already open as they
approached it, slowly drawing to a stop as the noted the absence of the
Headmaster. With an exasperated sigh, Professor McGonagall pushed them through
the doorway and drew it shut with a firm clap as she turned back down the
stairway.
“Gentlemen, please sit down.” A pair of heavy
hands smacked down on James and Sirius’ backs, guiding them forward to a set of
old woven chairs. As they settled into the semicircle of chairs, the Headmaster
shuffled round the desk, pausing to stroke the breast of the jubilantly
coloured Fawkes. “I’m sure you’re well aware of the reason for you being here.”
He slowly settled himself down into the tall overstuffed chair, situated behind
the desk. Shaking his head, he stared over the half-moon glasses balancing on
the end of his nose. “What am I to do with you four? Do any of you have a
reason for your actions this morning?”
“Professor Dumbledore.” James held his hands
clasp together in his lap, eyes pinned down at this intertwined fingers,
glasses slipping further and further down his nose. “It was just meant as a bit
of fun sir, we didn’t mean any harm.”
“Nevertheless, Mr Potter, the actions of you
and your companions created a great deal of chaos this morning. As a result all
four of you will serve a week of detention with Mr Filch.”
“What?!” Sirius bounced up from his chair,
“It was just a harmless prank.”
“Mr Black, regardless of your intentions, you
caused the staff a great deal of bother, and left young Mr Snape in a rather
undignified state. As such you will serve your punishment and be glad that it
is as light as it is. Now cease your complaining or I
will begin to deduct points. Do you have anything more to say?”
Remus pulled Sirius back down onto his well-worn
chair, patting his arm with slow stilted movements. “No Sir.”
“Good, you’ll find Mr Filch outside the Great
hall at six, and will do whatever he sets you till eight. Is that clear
gentlemen?”
“Yes sir.”
“Now off with you.” He plucked up a stray
scroll from the many littering his desk, before standing and wandering off to
the room behind his office.
Peter darted with a surprising amount of speed
out of his chair and down the stairway, unheeding of James’ shout for him to
wait. Flinging his arms up, he turned to the other two boys. “Well I guess it’s
only to be expected.”
“I wonder what his parents will say.” Remus
drifted forward, Sirius’ hand resting on the small of his back.
“No clue, but I could probably tell you exactly
what my mum will be screaming in my ear.”
Sirius’ face scrunched up at the thought of it. This
time starting up the stairway at a significantly slower pace than before.
James strolled along next to him, fingers
teasing at the growing fray on his jumper cuff. “My dad will probably spout out
the token lecture for my mum, and then later we’ll laugh about it. It never
ends up being that big a deal.”
Remus offered Sirius a soft smile, “I wouldn’t
worry Sirius, it’ll probably be better than you think. I’m glad your parents
will be cool with it James, my mum and dad are bound to just shoot me these sad
disappointed looks for the start of the Christmas break, it’s going to drive me
barmy.”
He dug at the dirt under his fingernails, nose
crinkling as he tried not to go cross-eyed. “I’d rather have them scream at me
any day, than those looks. It’s bad
enough how they are…” Glancing quickly around, he made sure no one else was in
the vicinity before he continued. “You
know, after the full moon.”
“I’ll bloody well trade you anytime you want
Remus, would please me to no end to get away from the mad bat.” Sirius slipped
forward, hand sliding along Remus’ side, before falling away to flop in the
air. “Bertie Botts.”
The portrait door slid open, whilst the fat lady blathered on about the time.
“Come on, we better grab our books before we’re late for Muggle Studies. I hear
we’re finally getting a permanent placement after the last one went missing.”
James suddenly appeared at Remus’ side, neck
bent to rest his head lazily on the smaller boy’s shoulder. “Oh thank god for
that. I thought he actually wanted to go to class. Instead he just wants to
know if he’s got eye candy this term.” Lolling slowly, he stared into the
sticky-toffee coloured eyes, letting the grin grow steadily across his face. “I
wonder if I should tell him that it’s a guy.” That devious grin soon spawned a
companion on the paler set. “You decide Remus.”
Remus quickly slipped away to see just what
Sirius was getting up to, and at the sight of him trying to quickly rim his eyes,
he turned back to James and smirked. “No, James. I think, perhaps, we should
let our good friend Mr Padfoot find out himself.”
Remus padded over to the overstuffed sofa
planted before the fireplace, where he’d left his bag from earlier and waited
silently for Sirius to finish. James quickly darted up the stairs to grab his
book bag from the dorm before plonking down next to him. None of the boys
having noticed the absence of one Peter Pettigrew, who had, in a previously
unseen burst of speed managed to somehow dart in and out before they made it
up. Or perhaps he’d merely run straight to class, forgetting that he lacked his
texts and writing equipment in his nervousness.
