    Chapter 3: Healing Trust

The next morning things got even worse for Albus Dumbledore when an owl arrived from Gringotts bank. According to them all accounts in the Potter and Black estates, plus Harry Potter's personal vault, had been sealed. No funds could be drawn from any of the accounts until Mr. Potter himself arrived to order the release of the locking spells. Until then, anyone who had been supported by either estate was out of luck.

As Harry's guardian, Lucius had taken steps to prevent Albus Dumbledore... or anyone else... from looting the young wizard's inheritances from his parents and godfather. He knew Harry wanted the werewolf, Remus Lupin, to have some form of income, so as promised, an account was set up for the lycanthrope using Lucius' own funds. Later, he would allow the young man to reimburse him, but for the moment, the aristocrat didn't want anyone to say that he had taken Potter's money for his own benefit... and sealing the accounts would assure that.
    ~*~
Two days later, Albus Dumbledore stepped into a gilt office at Gringotts Wizards Bank. The goblin behind the desk looked up. "Headmaster, to what do I owe the pleasure?"

The old man smiled, "Hello, Griphook. I found some discrepancies in Harry Potter's accounts, and need access to the vaults to verify the figures."

To his amazement, the goblin shook his head, "No can do, Headmaster. Mr. Potter is now of age to handle his own accounts. They have been sealed by the MLE and the head of Gringotts… on behalf of Mr. Potter's guardian. And I know for a fact that no money has been removed from any of the vaults since August 1996. No one has been near either the Potter or the Black vaults since then." Albus sputtered, "But I'm his magical guardian."

Griphook shook his head again, "Not according to the MLE. According to the documents they showed me, a new guardian was appointed for Mr. Potter on 5 July of this year."

Dumbledore stared at the small creature, "So who is it?"

Griphook shrugged, "Sorry, Headmaster, the document, and all information on it, was placed under Fidelius. I couldn't tell you if I wanted to as I am not Mr. Potter's Secret Keeper."

Albus left in a snit. It seemed that he was blocked at every turn from finding out anything regarding Harry Potter and his current guardian. Someone had done an amazing job of second-guessing him.
    ~*~
Harry Potter walked into the office of the MLE. Surprised, the clerk sent the teenager in to see Kingsley Shacklebolt. As he took a seat in front of the Auror, Harry said. “Kingsley, I need access to my accounts, and Gringotts says you need to be with me.”

Looking down at some papers on his desk, the Auror replied, “It will have to wait until tomorrow, Harry. I’m backed up as it is.”

A fist slammed on his desk, as the young wizard became angry. “I don’t care how busy you are, I need my money.”

Realizing what had just happened, the Auror stood, motioning Harry to follow him. Further down the hall, he opened a door, “Let me get the papers we need, and we’ll go.” The brunet nodded and stepped into the room.

To his shock the door was sealed, and a special ward slammed into place. “Kingsley, what’s going on?” Harry screamed.

A speaker activated, “I don’t know who you are, but you made a mistake in trying to convince me that you are Harry Potter. I know better. So you will sit there until the polyjuice wears off.”

Two hours later, a wizarding camera showed that the occupant of the sealed room was none other than Albus Dumbledore. Kingsley shook his head. “It figures, the old fool.”

Going back to the room, Shacklebolt opened the door. “Get out of here Albus… and don’t try that stunt again, or you’ll be charged with impersonation of Harry Potter.”

The old wizard frowned at him, “I’d like to know how you knew.”

The Auror grinned, “Sorry, but that’s confidential, now beat it… unless you want to sit in a cell for a while longer.”

After Dumbledore left, Shacklebolt contacted Lucius. “The old man tried polyjuice to convince me he was Harry. Unfortunately for him, he heard what I said when I wasn’t looking at him.”

The blonde laughed, “Does he know where he screwed up?”

Kingsley shook his head, “Not a chance. I need every advantage I’ve got.”

Thinking it over, the blonde invited him to the Manor for a meeting with the young wizard. The Auror agreed to be there in a few hours.
    ~*~
At the end of the meeting, Kingsley Shacklebolt had a list of places Harry wanted to see, and things he wanted to do. Each would be used as code to verify him to the Auror if his hearing returned.

    Flashback:
Lucius translated when Kingsley asked, “Harry would you tell me some of the things you’d like to do? Dumbledore used polyjuice today to look like you. Fortunately, he didn’t know about your hearing loss, and it gave him away.”

The brunet nodded. “I want to see Stonehenge; a Broadway play; the Grand Canyon; and the Valley of the Kings. I’d like to be able to see how tall a eucalyptus tree is; watch a kangaroo hop, and see a koala bear. I’d like to see how many people it takes to hug a giant redwood, and to walk barefoot on a black sand beach. I want to swim with a dolphin, watch the whales, and to visit Disney World. Most of all I want to find someone to love, and to have a family.”

Lucius gave the young man a hug then signed, ‘Someday, Harry, you will get to do all those things. I promise you that.’ He met Kingsley’s eyes, “Is that enough?”

The Auror nodded. “That’s plenty. It gives me a lot to work with. Thanks Harry.”

The teen replied in a rather muffled monotone, “You’re welcome, Kingsley.”

    Luna had received a message, by way of her father, from Lisa Turpin. It said;

H.G. acting strange, as are the rest of the lions. Badgers and Ravens have united to stand with you. Serpents considering. If you need any help, Owl..

The witch grinned. So the Hufflepuffs and Ravenclaws would back them up, and possible the Slytherins would join in. She thought that the others would find that amusing... and helpful.

Late in October the hearing was finally held for the Dursleys. Only after all was said and done did Albus Dumbledore find out that the muggle family had been held at the Ministry… and found guilty of child abuse, neglect, and attempted murder. Their sentences varied, but the Quibbler listed the injuries to one Harry James Potter, with the exception of the hearing loss, in detail. The shock that reverberated through the wizarding world left little doubt that the punishments would be harsh.

Relatives of Boy Who Lived Sentenced
    By Lysander Lovegood

Yesterday, this reporter had a ringside seat at the sentencing of Vernon and Petunia Dursley, and their son, Dudley, in the case of Potter versus Dursley. It was a relief to see that this was not to be pushed under the carpet as many of the young hero’s problems had been over the years.

After the extensive list of injuries was read by Elizabeth Blackwell during the trial even this reporter had no doubts as to the results of the trials.

To refresh our readers’ memories, the injuries were as follows:

Fractured skull and jaw; a broken nose, both clavicles, three fractured and two broken ribs; a lacerated kidney; broken ulna on the right side, crushed hands, fractured hip. Both legs had been broken. And cuts, bruises, burns, whips scars, as well as words carved into the young wizard’s skin.

The Wizengamot was unanimous in its sentencing of the elder Dursleys. The only disagreement was over what Dudley Dursley, who is approximately the same age as Harry Potter, deserved as punishment for his involvement.

In the end, they were sentenced as follows:

Petunia Evans Dursley was found guilty of child abuse and neglect, and sentenced to 10 years in Azkaban.

Dudley Dursley was found guilty of attempted murder, and sentenced to magical rehabilitation for no less than 10 years, due to his being a juvenile throughout most of the years of abuse to his cousin.

Vernon Dursley was found guilty of child abuse, neglect, and attempted murder, and sentenced to serve no less that 15 1/2 years in Azkaban before receiving the Dementor's Kiss. The length of the sentence was based on the length of time Harry Potter had lived under his abusive regime.

This paper wishes the young hero a speedy recovery, and all the best.

That was all the information that the Quibbler made available, as Lysander was aware that everything else regarding the case of Harry Potter vs. the Dursleys was placed under the Fidelius Charm. The Daily Prophet had even less. Albus wondered why a second-rate news rag had the most information, but never put the pieces together with the identities of the missing students.

Meanwhile, Lucius Malfoy and Kingsley Shacklebolt were laughing their heads off. No one would ever expect Harry to request Neville Longbottom to be his Secret Keeper, but to the young wizard, it made sense. Neville was the oldest friend he had who had stuck by him when Granger and the Weasleys abandoned him. Choosing the shy young man as his Secret Keeper showed the faith Harry had in Neville, and Neville bloomed under Harry's trust.
    ~*~
The night after the Dursley’s sentencing, Harry and the others sat in the Malfoy conservatory. Lucius had found that the young Gryffindor enjoyed the peace of the room and ordered the house elves to leave it open for his use.

Draco glanced at the others and gave a short nod of his head. Something was going on with their schoolmate but they had all agreed to let Lucius handle it. Susan got Harry’s attention and signed to him, ‘We’re going upstairs, dear. Talk to you tomorrow.’ The dark-haired wizard nodded, and watched as the others left.

With a wave of his hand, the young man turned off the lights and lay looking up at the stars through the glass roof. There were so many wishes he could make, but somewhere along the way, Harry had given up on wishing. Nothing had ever come of the innocent ones he’d made as a child. Those wishes for a loving family, and a happy home.

A touch on his shoulder brought Harry out of the past as Lucius Malfoy sat down beside him, signing, ‘Do you want to talk about it?’

The teenager shrugged, and with difficulty spoke, the slurred consonants telling that he couldn’t hear himself. “It wouldn’t do any good… it never has.”

A frown on his face, the blonde replied, ‘You’ve never tried telling me, Harry. It might make all the difference in the world.’

Harry Potter, Savior of the Wizarding World, child abuse survivor, and hearing-impaired student replied, “I was just thinking about the futility of wishing on stars, and how many times I wished, only to have nothing happen.”

Lucius could understand where the younger man was coming from, but merely answered, ‘Tell me about your wishes. I’ll gladly listen.’

Harry stood and went over to the floor-to-ceiling window, the thickness in his tone telling his host that he was on the verge of an emotional breakdown. “When I was little I wished for a happy home; a family that loved me; parents that I could depend on; and to never have to go hungry again.” His eyes filled with tears, “Until I came here, I had never known the last. The third is impossible, and I’m sure that the first two won’t ever happen. After all, I couldn’t ever trust that a person wanted ‘Harry’, not the Wizarding World’s Savior.”

Lucius understood. What Draco and Luna took for granted, Harry and Neville had never had. But for Harry it was worse because he had been left with people who hurt him.

Going over to the dark-haired youth, he turned Harry to face him, and lifted the boy’s chin. “Read my lips, Harry.” The Gryffindor sighed. It was something he was learning, but still not proficient at.

Lucius smiled, “I promise you, Harry James Potter, that I will be there at your side until the day I die. You won’t ever be alone again… unless you want to be.”

Harry’s head jerked up, looking around as if sensing something, and Luc smiled again. Turning the young man back to him, he said clearly, “It’s the magic of my promise to you that you feel. Nothing to fear.” He led the teen back to the seat and tucked him in beside him, giving Harry the feeling of belonging.

Suddenly Harry sat upright, his hands over his ears, and began screaming in pain.

“Tibby,” Lucius yelled. The house elf appeared. “Get Healer Blackwell… immediately. Then go get Draco and the others.” The small creature nodded and vanished as Harry’s piercing screams continued.
    ~*~
Upstairs Draco heard someone scream, and he darted out of his room, only taking time to bang on three other doors in his rush to get downstairs. Luna, Susan, and Neville tumbled out after him, anxiety flooding their veins, as they made their way to the conservatory, where the screams were emanating from.

Draco fell into the room to find his father holding Harry, who was obviously in extreme agony. “Get a pain potion, Draco… and hurry.” The blonde nodded, and pushed his way through Harry’s friends. Moments later he was back, and helped his father get the potion into the screaming Gryffindor.

As the potion took effect, Harry passed out, mostly from the relief, and the others gathered around. “What’s wrong with him, Father?” Draco inquired.

“I’m not sure, Draconis, but I sent Tibby to get Beth. Perhaps she can tell us. All I know is that he grabbed his ears and started screaming.”

“What in Merlin’s name is going on here? All Tibby could tell me was that someone was screaming.” Elizabeth Blackwell glided into the mayhem. As Lucius explained what happened, she took out her wand and began scanning the Gryffindor in his arms. The readings surprised her, but she wanted a reason for them before letting the others know.

    “What happened before that?”

The blonde glared at her. “If you must know, I promised Harry that I would always be there for him. He’d never have to be afraid, or alone, again.”

At that, a brilliant smile emerged from the elderly healer. “Well, I think you managed more than you ever dreamed, Lucius. Remember when I said that he might regain his hearing once he feels truly safe?” Everyone nodded, remembering that day in July when Harry was healed of everything but his hearing loss.

“With your promise, Lucius, you’ve given young Harry a measure of protection and safety he’s never known. In short, the pain is caused by the healing of his hearing.”

With a wave of her wand, two small pieces of cotton appeared in the boy’s ears. “Leave the cotton there for now. It’s going to take time for him to adjust to the noise again, and this will dampen enough of it he shouldn’t be in too much pain. But if he can’t handle it, give him a half dose of the pain potion.”

Neville glowed, “You mean Harry will be able to hear again?”

Beth smiled at him and nodded, “Yes, Neville, he will. But as I said, it took him feeling truly safe for that to happen.”

Draco realized that his father seemed to care a great deal for his former nemesis, and the blonde remembered a conversation with the other three teens where they told him that Harry Potter admitted to admiring his father a great deal. Suddenly an alliance between the House Malfoy and the House Potter didn’t seem all that bad… if it made his father happy.
    ~*~
Shortly after Halloween, Remus appeared at Hogwarts and, to his amazement, Snape had Wolfsbane ready for him. When the werewolf attempted to pay him for his efforts, the Potions Master shrugged it off. "I've already received payment, Lupin. The money arrives each month, immediately after the full moon, for the next batch." He explained as they approached the Headmaster's office.

It was confusing, so Remus decided to bring Albus in on it. As he took a seat across from the old wizard, the lycanthrope said. "Someone is paying Severus for my Wolfsbane, Albus, and I don't know who."

Dumbledore shook his head, "Be grateful that it’s being paid for, Remus, because all of Harry's accounts were sealed before the first of September."

The amber-eyed man frowned, "That doesn't make sense, Albus. I'm still getting money every month. In fact, as of August, it was double what I had been receiving."

Now truly confused, the old man went to the floo and called Gringotts. When he got Griphook, Albus asked, "If Mr. Potter's accounts are sealed, how is Remus Lupin still receiving a stipend from the accounts?"

The goblin shrugged, "He's not. When Mr. Potter's accounts were sealed, a special account was set up for Mr. Lupin by the guardian. That account gives Mr. Lupin funds to live on, plus pays for his wolfsbane. As with Mr. Potter's accounts, all other information regarding Mr. Lupin's special account is under Fidelius."

Returning to Severus and Remus, the Headmaster explained what he had learned, and the werewolf shook his head. "Who is this guardian, Albus? I thought you were Harry's magical guardian."

Dumbledore sighed, "I don't know. All the goblins will tell me is that information about the accounts and the identity of the guardian are under the Fidelius Charm... as is Mr. Potter's location. Even Kingsley Shacklebolt can't help me... and I've used Legilimency on him. The last memory he has of Harry is from an Order meeting last spring."

Tears had sprung to the werewolf's eyes, "What in the name of Merlin happened around here while I was gone?" Severus chuckled and handed him a copy of the Quibbler.

As Lupin read the details of the Dursley's sentencing, the Potions Master could see the anger rising in the other man, and Remus finally flung down the paper. "Why did you send him back there?" He asked Albus in a rage. "Harry didn't deserve to be treated like that. Why didn't you let him stay at Grimmauld Place instead?"

Albus Dumbledore had no answer that wouldn't get him killed by a raging werewolf, so he just shrugged his shoulders and said, "I just felt he would be safer there."

Unbeknownst to the Headmaster, a message was winging its way to the missing five, telling of Slytherin House joining in with Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw to support their friends.

It was yet another boost to the damaged Gryffindor's spirit that the Houses were ready to back them. It was agreed that once the current class had graduated and were no longer under Dumbledore's thumb, correspondence would be opened with certain people to tighten the alliance.
    ~*~
To Lucius' amazement, Harry thrived in his studies, even insisting on continuing with the lessons in sign language. The brunet explained that it might come in handy someday to help someone else. The tutors Lord Malfoy had hired told the aristocrat that all five young people should more than qualify for the Advance Placement Program when the tests were administered in the spring.

With the knowledge of Harry's reasons for keeping up the study of sign language, the others agreed to join him. Even Draco admitted that it would be a good means of communication when one needed to be silent. Lucius and Harry both thought that a most Slytherin way of looking at it.

The blonde man kept Harry apprised of everything that was happening, especially regarding Remus Lupin, and the smile on the young man's face when he found that the wolfsbane was a separate payment from the lycanthrope's living stipend made it more than worth Lucius' efforts.
