First Contact
The first thing he had to do was get rid of that damnable Ronald Weasley. You will be cut out of this picture, my dear boy. Snape swept like a ghost through the labyrinthine aisles of the bookstore, searching out for that one not-so-silent silent spot where Hermione’s mind was being pulled deeply into the words of a book. Ron he could hear from a mile away with his clobbering footsteps, but his quarry was much more subtle. He caught it!
A smell of vanilla came at him, and he leaned up against the shelf from where it came. He could see the top of her head, so he bent down one shelf to gaze into her eyes connected to the titles of books in a spellbound stare. “Hello, Hermione.”
She jumped at her name, and her honey and ochre irises gazed toward him. “Professor?”
Good, she recognized him. That was always a favorable place to begin. He removed a large book between them, and she removed one from her side. They now had a clear view of each other’s face. “What are you doing here?”
Her inquiring mind had always annoyed him, but he shrugged this off. “Same as you, I would assume. Shopping for books. Looking through the new Potions theory section. Also reading through some of the new Herbology literature in stock to see what interesting specimens have been exhumed and what others have been discovered- the unknown, Miss Granger, is our most elusive companion.”
Hermione’s eyes shined at his speech, but then became dark. “Yes, yes.”
The book took it’s place on her side, and her body began to disappear. “Miss Granger?”
Severus quickly paced down his aisle, and met the retreating party face on. Her eyes were downcast, and his hand held below her chin to raise her eyes to him. “Is there something I am missing?”
His mind bore down on her, but it seemed the witch practiced Occlumency. He wouldn’t force himself on her… this time. She pulled away from him, and kind of half-heartedly laughed. “I was owled by someone telling me of your reputation, Professor. So, if you’ve decided to be pleasant with me now, I can only assume why.”
“Someone has owled you of my character.” Severus scowled at the thought. Well, this would indeed put a damper on the simplicity of this project even further. “Well, who has done this so I may have my say? I’m pretty sure I know my character better than some other fool.”
Squinting, then shaking her head, she said resolutely, “No, I think I should keep my source quiet.”
His need of vengeance boiled in his blood. Oh, if he knew who that bastard was… they would be in great pain right now for meddling. Severus’ face had fallen for a period, and Hermione took this as her leave. Walking away, he touched her shoulder. “It is true, to some extent. My reputation, that is. I’ve done a few things I haven’t been proud of, but I had hoped you would give me a fresh start and not judge me as quickly as others had.”
Their place in the bookstore was too far in to preclude any chance rays of light, and Hermione’s head was bent down, as if in solemn prayer. When she looked back up at him, her eyes were full of both wariness and compassion. Snape wanted to go on to force her compliance, but knew the way her mind worked would suffice her to come to her own conclusions. “Yes, you have redeemed yourself some in this last war, haven’t you?”
Severus said nothing, but walked around her while she stayed in her thoughts. His quarry was sumptuous, he gathered, as he took her lithe form in. Her muggle clothes left little to the imagination, but he wouldn’t complain. Narcissa often left nothing to the imagination, and that didn’t seem to bother him. When he came about to Hermione’s front, he saw that her brief interlude of softness had expired. Resolution was left, and he damned himself for not realizing it. Ron’s voice floated through the stale library with a soft note of pleading for his bride. Her face was determined while she turned to walk toward her lover. “Perhaps another time then, Professor.”
Severus’ knuckles were white as his fingernails dug into his palm.

A/N: I have not seen any of the makes of Dangerous Liaisons or read the entire book, so please don’t be mad at me, haha. I’m renting the 1988 version tonight for inspiration, because I love John Malkovitch, too. *cuddles up with movie that doesn’t yet exist* I do know the basic storyline however, and have been perfectly fascinated. Yes, I am changing a few things, it would be impossible to follow any of the plots completely without changing the characters too much, so I tried a nice balance between characterization and plot. Such as- Ron and Hermione not being married, but engaged, which is a difference, but not much of one.
