Draco Malfoy lay sprawled out on his king sized, four poster bed, staring up at the ceiling without blinking. “I can’t believe I just did that.” He thought to himself. “What was I thinking? He is going to know it was me who sent that letter, and if he doesn’t, Granger will. I will be the laughing stock of the whole school come September.” Draco sighed and called for his personal house elf in a defeated tone.
A pop was heard a little to his left, but he didn’t turn his head. “Ruby! Fetch me some tea and biscuits. I need them to relax… Well? What are you waiting for? Go!” Ruby snapped her fingers and was gone instantly. “Ruddy house elves.” Draco thought angrily.
What had started this lame obsession with Potter anyway? They hated each other. That was the way it had always been. why couldn’t he just leave it as it was? Why must he muck everything up so badly? He couldn’t even have an enemy properly. He had to muck that up too. What was wrong with him? He wondered. “Am I so desperate that I lust after any guy who pays any attention to me, whether it be good or bad?” Draco dismissed this thought as soon as it entered his mind. “Nah. I have guys and girls falling at my feet everyday.” He thought, as a smug smile formed on his lips. The smile dissipated as he thought back to the question at hand. “Then why Potter?” Draco squeezed his eyes shut and tried to will away the headache that had come on quite suddenly.
Ruby popped back to Draco’s side a few minutes later, carrying a tray. On the tray was a mug of steaming tea, and a plate of fresh biscuits. Still warm from the oven, the biscuits created a scent that had Draco forgetting about his headache instantly. “You may go.” He said without looking up, as he reached towards the plate. Ruby disappeared.
A while later, Draco flew circling the Gardens of Malfoy Manor, enjoying the way the wind would whip through his hair, and the exhilaration of flying would create a distraction from all of his problems. He soared past the walls of the gardens and on towards the lake.
Draco quickly pointed his broom downwards, and rolled, creating a downward spiral before pulling up just inches above the ground. A smile lit up his features as he remembered using that move at his last quidditch match. It was against Gryffindor of course, and Potter had stolen his glory by once again catching the elusive snitch. It was a game not forgotten. Draco couldn’t forget the way that Harry’s face was scrunched up in concentration while they fought for the snitch, and the look of pure joy when his fingers had finally closed around it, that had made his wonderful green eyes sparkle in the sunlight. He had almost fallen off of his broom when Harry threw him a sexy smirk and taunted “Good game Malfoy. Maybe you could have beaten me if you had been sitting on your broomstick, rather than flying around with it shoved up your ass.” He then gave a happy smile and flew off before Draco had time to think of a witty retort.
Draco smoothly landed his broom next to the lake and pulled a few items out of his pocket that he had brought with him. He set the items, which included a white blanket, a few pieces of parchment, a quill, and an apple, on the ground and quickly changed them back to their proper size. He laid out the blanket under a nearby tree and gathered up the other things in his arms to place them onto the blanket.
Draco sat with his back against the tree, elbows propped against his knees, and the apple dangling from his left hand. He stared out at the lake with unseeing eyes, mentally going over what he had said in his letter to Potter. He had told him that his father was a death eater and that he didn’t want to side with Voldemort. He was half expecting “St. Potter” to write back, and try to save another soul from the dark side. It was almost comical to think about what was most likely going through the Gryffindor’s head at this very moment. When he heard a hoot above him, a bit to his left, he let out a chuckle at Gryffindor predictability, when he saw Potter’s white owl coming towards him. He untied the letter and gave the owl a chunk of apple before opening it to read what Harry had to say.
He was slightly nervous about reading the response because he knew what the letter would contain. Harry would probably try to offer protection in exchange for helping the light and Draco would have to refuse. He hated that part. Why did he even write to him in the first place? When did things become so confusing? He cursed himself for his own stupidity and slowly unfolded the parchment.
Slytherin,
Wow! Your letter was very flattering. Thank you. I hope you are doing well, and that you are in no immediate danger as of now. I don’t know who you are, as you chose to keep your identity a secret, so I cannot confirm nor deny your statement about us never being together.
But even if you are right in your assumption, we could always be friends.
I do realize that there are other issues at stake for you, obviously, so I will leave the choice up to you whether you take me up on my offer or not… But I was hoping that you would consider it.
If you do decide that you would like to take me up on my offer of friendship, I just want you to know, I will always stay loyal to my friends and protect them to the best of my ability… Call it a Gryffindor trait I suppose.
Give it a thought and write back,
~Harry~
If Draco was expecting a certain response from Harry, that was most definitely not it. Harry had said that they could be friends, and that he would be loyal to him, and protect him. Where were the negotiations for information on his death eater father? Where was the bargaining chip? Was Harry even suspicious about the letter? Or was he too blinded by his Gryffindor goodness? Should he write back? Should he become friends with Harry Potter? What would people think if they saw them walking down the halls together? Or sitting together in class?? “Whoa!! What was I thinking? I can‘t just become friends with him! My whole house would have it in for me. And not to mention… My father! I’ve got to put an end to this right now.” He thought before swiping up his parchment and quill.
Harry,
What I wrote before was an absolute lapse in judgment We could never be friends. Everyone would be scandalized, and my house would kill me in my sleep.. Or actually, they would probably make sure I was awake, so that they could torture me slowly. Please disregard my aforementioned letter and sod off.
Slytherin
Draco folded up his letter and attached it to the waiting owl’s outstretched leg. “Told you to wait for a reply did he?” He asked the owl. Hedwig hooted in response, and took off in pursuit of her owner. He felt bad for his response to the letter, but he didn’t want to get his hopes up for nothing. So he felt that he made the right decision by blowing Harry off, before Harry saw who it was who actually wrote the letter and hexed him.
Thank you to everyone who reviewed. I love you guys. Love goes out to mystiedaze,WitchingMoon, Angela Morgan , DN, Lilth and B.. Happy reading.
