Disclaimer: I do not own Harry Potter, nor any of the characters from the books or movies. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
I have realized that I have
not placed the standard disclaimer in any of my previous chapters. So
here it is. I do not own Harry Potter or any of the characters from those
books. If my story in any way resembles somebody else’s, please forgive
me, I read a lot of Harry Potter fan fiction. I have for years. It
was not intentionally done, please look at it as the highest form of flattery
there is. I want to thank everyone who has given me glowing
reviews. I really appreciate it because this is my first story ever.
For that reason, please bear with me, I am trying to make this as fully
formed a story as I can. I hate when things jump, but saying that I know
that in chapter 1 the war is still going on and in chapter 2 it has ended. The war is still going on; my brain became
miswired during that paragraph. Also I am a school teacher and with the
beginning of the year coming up quickly I have a lot of stuff to do. Now
with that said, on with the story.
Sigh. Toss. Turn.
Look at the clock. 1:00AM.
Hermione couldn’t
sleep. She hadn’t been able to sleep in the last four days. The
days since she returned from Azkaban Prison. She couldn’t stop her
brain. Lucius story was running through her head. And when it
wasn’t, Lucius himself was running through her head. She kept seeing him,
sitting there, and looking nothing like the man she remembered. Oh he was
still tall. Towering over her petit 5’5” height, but his hair, once shiny
and silky silvery blonde, was stringy and dull, almost grey looking. His
face. His handsome face was no longer filled and chiseled, but sunken and
his skin was no longer just pale, but sickly and sallow. His lean
muscular frame was in need of a month of feeding from Mrs. Weasley.
Badly. He no longer was god gorgeous but Hermione couldn’t keep from thinking
about him. She was worried about him, if what he said was true, then he
shouldn’t be there.
Hermione wasn’t known as the smartest witch to come out of Hogwarts since Rowan
Ravenclaw for nothing. She realized that he, as a Death Eater and
probably before that did horrific things. Terrible things she didn’t want
to imagine. But he hadn’t been caught and tried for those things.
He had been caught, tried, and found guilty on made up charges. Charges
he agreed to, but he thought that once the Light had won the war he would be
release. That he could go back to his life. His son. His
wife. Narcissa Malfoy. Hermione remembered seeing her once. At the Quidditch World Cup. She was stunning. What man didn’t dream of returning to her? But, because Lucius was safely inside
Azkaban, Voldemort didn’t have a person to release his anger on Lucius “failures”
onto. So he had his Death Eaters invade
Malfoy Manner and bring both Draco and Narcissa to him. They never left. During the last battle, Tonks came upon a
locked room in Riddle House. Inside was a
dead Draco. Tonks had never been able to
talk about what she had seen. What he
had endured. The Malfoy’s were her
family, and even though she never met Draco, she still felt responsible. What Lucius must have gone through? Hermione couldn’t imagine. No one had seen Narcissa; they thought that
she had been taken to wherever the Death Eaters were hiding now. They didn’t know that two Death Eater’s had
already been sent, by the time they attacked, to drop her body at Azkaban. What no one understood was why they didn’t
take Draco’s body also.
Severus reached up with his left arm to wipe the sweat
forming on his brow away. He was
exhausted, but this potion had to be finished before he could stop. The Wolfsbane Potion was a very sensitive
potion and it did not respond to stasis charms.
If he didn’t finish it now, the whole batch was ruined. Even though he was hunted, he made this
potion every month. He left in on the
front desk of St. Mungo’s every time.
After the first month, when they wisely tested the potion to make sure
it wasn’t poison, they greatly took it for all the Werewolf’s that needed the
medicine. They didn’t know who brewed it
from them, and they never tried to find out.
They were too grateful. Only a
handful of people were rumored to be able to make this potion, and none of them
were employed by St. Mungo’s. The Wolfsbane
was just another way for Severus to try to repay society. He knew that if St. Mungo’s knew who brewed
for them that they would stop using the potion, even though they needed it. No one would use anything that came from
him. A murderer.
Once the potion was finished, Severus
took the cauldron off the fire to cool.
He would return in the morning to bottle and package. Then off for another secret foray into the
hospital tomorrow night. Sighing,
Severus stretched and walked out of his potions lab. Heading for his bedroom, he saw the rolled up
form of the Daily Prophet that he had thrown onto his couch yesterday. He hadn’t gotten around to reading it
yet. Looking at it he shook his head, it
would just be the same old stuff, nothing to pressing, he would read it later
after a shower and rest. And with that
he continued on across the living room and down a side hallway to his
bedroom. Taking a quick shower, and
washing his hair, yes he did use shampoo, he put on some emerald green silk
pajama bottoms and slipped in to bed.
Before a minute passed he was asleep.
Never knowing his life had changed.
Stunned, Hermione sat in Kingsley Shacklebolt’s office at the
Ministry. Trying to process what he had
just told her.
“Everything, absolutely everything. He didn’t lie about anything. He told the truth so exactly, and what
Dumbledore left proves everything, Snape’s mission, Lucius incarceration,
everything, that you don’t even think that you need to go back and re-interview
him under Veritaserum.” Hermione asked
dumbly.
“Yes, everything, Hermione.
In fact, I have already sent a copy of my findings out to all the major
papers around the world. I did so last
night, immediately after the last report was brought in. They should have printed it in the morning
edition of the Daily Prophet. I am
surprised that you didn’t already know this.”
“I was running late this morning. I had a hard time getting to sleep last night
so I barely had time to get dressed and get here. My copy is still sitting on my table at home.” Taking a deep breath Hermione asked. “So, what about Lucius? What will happen with him?”
“I have already in formed the Wizengamot about Dumbledore’s
plot and they have already put the wands in motion. The paper work to exonerate him is being
taken care of. His Estate and businesses
are being released to him; his Gringotts account is being reopened with
everything put back in. Hopefully by
tomorrow, he can go home. In my story to
the papers, I told Lucius story along with Severus’ so everyone will know that
he was placed there as protection by Dumbledore. They will know about his roll in the war. The only problem is that he will be hunted by
Death Eater’s. Once he is released,
Voldemort won’t rest until he has been killed also. The same goes for Severus. Once we find him, we have to find away to get
him somewhere safe. For that matter, we
have to make Malfoy Manor safe for Lucius to return to. As it is now, he’s just a sitting duck there
for Voldemort.”
“I’ll think on that.
Maybe…but no I have to read some of my books back home before I can give
you a suggestion. Thank you Kingsley for
calling me in to let me know how everything is turning out, I appreciate your
thoughtfulness. Will you be at the next
meeting?”
“Yes. Have a good day Hermione, and I will keep you
posted. Let me know if you come up with
anything.”
And with that Hermione left Shacklebolt’s office to head to
the apparation point. If she hurried she
would be home in time to have some lunch with her parents when they came home
from the office, before she started her research.
