Chapter Two
Sirius
Six Years Prior
Sirius clamber aboard the Hogwarts Express, his eyes shining with excitement. For a full year, he would be away from them! He hated his parents, and they knew it. He tugged at his trunk with one hand, and desperately clung to the cage of his owl with the other while he searched the rows for an empty compartment. It took nearly four cars for him to find one, but when he pulled open the door, he found it to be occupied by a young man that couldn’t have been much older than Sirius. Sirius eyed the boy curiously-- he wore a pair of round glasses, and his black hair stood out at odd angles, and refused to lie down even as the boy ran his fingers nervously through the strands. “Sorry. Didn’t know someone was…” Sirius didn’t even bother to finish, as he had already started to close the door.
“Wait!” the other boy said loudly. “You can… er… sit here, if you want.” Sirius’ heart leapt-- no one he’d met had ever been interested in sitting with him. Sirius entered the compartment and stowed his belongings in their proper locations before flopping into the opposite bench. “Sirius Black.” He said shortly, extending his hand. The other boy nodded and shook Sirius’ hand lightly. “James Potter.” No sooner had they introduced themselves, than a third young man rapped on the glass. His hazel eyes looked tired, and he pointed to the empty spot by Sirius. “Taken?” Sirius shook his head, and the boy entered and took his seat. “Remus Lupin… you first years, too?” Both boys nodded, and introductions were made.
A few minutes passed, and they heard the train whistle. A young girl glanced into their compartment for a moment, eyeing the seat next to James-- she looked as though she were contemplating as to whether she would join the three boys or not. With a decisive shrug, she tossed her brown hair over her shoulder and started again down the aisle. “What?” James said pointedly, causing the girl to stop. “Don’t want to sit with a bunch of stinky boys?” She only laughed, and Sirius felt several butterflies erupt in his stomach at the sound. “Please, you flatter yourselves.” She adjusted her wire frame glasses on her face and feigned a pompous air. “I shall not grace you with my presence.”
“Then at least grace us with a name.” Sirius said. He was shocked at his own words-- he couldn’t stop them before they left his lips. The girl looked at him and blushed lightly. “Anexia.” Sirius grinned, even as Anexia continued down the car to another compartment. A sharp pain in his shin made Sirius jump. “What was that for?” He snapped at James, who had obviously kicked him. James chuckled. “You like her.” Sirius opened his mouth to defend himself, but another loud whistle of the train stopped him. He slouched against the cushion, and glanced at the door just as yet another student began to pass. He was panting slightly, and seemed to be straining to pulled his trunk. “Everywhere else… full… can I… sit?” His words were broken as he caught his breath. Sirius and James both began to shake their heads no, but it was too late; Remus had already shrugged in assent. “Peter Pettigrew.” The large boy said after names had been exchanged, and he sat down heavily next to James.
Sirius could already feel his heart swell-- he hadn’t even planned on making one friend, but here he had three boys, his age, who seemed willing to accept him into their society. He glanced out the window and watched the scenery fly by. Remus and Peter were chatting about something they had both read in a text book (Sirius had yet to open his), and James was flipping through the pages of a comic book-- Sirius chuckled as the moving pictures acted out the words written above them. Sighing lightly, Sirius excused himself from the group. “I’m going to take a look around.”
James glanced up from his book. “If you run into any girls-- maybe ones whose names begin with an ‘A‘-- try to remember that you already have a seat in here.” Sirius smirked and exited into the corridor.
He didn’t see anyone else for a moment, and he had little problem keeping his balance as he ambled by the various compartments. Then a door slid open, and the same girl he had met earlier walked out-- unfortunately, she did not see Sirius, and the two collided and landed with heavy thuds on the floor. Sirius heard Anexia laugh, and he looked to see her already rising to her feet, brushing dust from her school robes. “Sorry.” She said lightly, extending a hand to help Sirius up. He grabbed her hand lightly and she easily pulled him to her feet. Sirius kicked at the floor lightly, suddenly very shy. “Anexia, right?” he said. She nodded. “What’s your name?” Sirius opened his mouth to answer, but found that another voice filled the void.
“This handsome young man is Sirius Black.” Sirius turned sharply to see James walking towards him. James had a smirk on his face that would have made Sirius laugh were he not trying to uphold a conversation. “And I’m James Potter.” Sirius shrugged at Anexia’s questioning stare as James peered into her compartment. “Hello ladies.” James said loudly. Sirius couldn’t help but chuckle as James plopped himself on the seat next to a rather irritated looking redhead. “James Potter.” He said, extending his hand to the young lady. She looked at his hand questioningly, then rolled her eyes. “Lily Evans. And I suggest you quit trying-- We’re not interested.” James shrugged and stood to leave. “Come on, Sirius. We know how to take a hint.” Sirius looked at Anexia and sighed. “Sorry.” he mouthed silently. She smiled before he was forced away, and again Sirius felt the butterflies erupt in his stomach.
Too soon, the train began to slow, and the group tumbled out of the train when it reached the station, laughing so hard at a rude joke James had just told that they almost missed the giant of a man calling all first years to him. They were instructed to pile into several tiny boats at the edge of a massive black lake. As their crafts rounded a bend, the castle came into sight, and a hushed awe passed over the entire group. Sirius had never seen anything like it-- windows glimmered with lights, and towers spiraled into the star- strewn sky. He leaned against the prow of the boat, mouth slightly agape, and was about to say something when he felt cool drops splash against the back of his neck. From his position at the back of the boat, James had reached into the dark water and splashed the three boys in front of him. Without thinking, Sirius returned the splash, which quickly lead to a rather loud fight that the tiny boat just couldn’t handle. Suddenly the craft tipped, and the four toppled into the cold lake. Struggling for something to grab hold of, Sirius and James reached for the nearest boat, which promptly tipped over as well. Sirius heard several girls scream, and he pushed the boat aside to see who had fallen in. There were two girls he didn’t recognize, and the redheaded Lily, who was glaring angrily at James. The fourth female was Anexia, who sputtered as she struggled to keep above the surface in her heavy robes.
Sirius swam over to her and grabbed her arm. “Hold on.” He said. Sirius tugged Anexia over to her fallen boat, and helped her pull her body half way over the edge. “Thanks.” She said, and even in the dark Sirius could see the crimson tainting her cheeks. He grinned, and was about to say something about offering to give her swimming lessons, when a large hand grabbed him by the cuff of his collar… and a loud voice was saying something about detention before they’d even been sorted…
