Dropping Harry off at Hogwarts was
the hardest day of Sirius' life, and therefore, the hardest day for Remus. Harry was excited, since it would finally be
safe for him to have two godfathers again, and be legal for him to practice the
magic that Remus had been teaching him the theory behind for years.
Sirius, on the other hand,
alternated between bursting with pride and bursting with fear. Hogwarts represented Harry growing up, and
neither of the adults wanted to lose the boy.
Remus accepted the change with his normal equanimity, while Sirius
railed against it.
Harry quickly made friends with the
youngest of the Weasley boys, who was also starting as a first year, and they
hurried onto the train to escape their overzealous parental figures.
Remus chatted companionably with
Arthur Weasley, who was thrilled to discover that the quiet wizard knew about
Muggle things like electricity, while Sirius and Molly Weasley waved
frantically at the boys and yelled advice.
When they received the owl the next
morning telling them that Harry had been sorted into Gryffindor, Sirius
insisted on going out to lunch to celebrate.
When the boy became the youngest
Seeker in an age to join the Gryffindor Quidditch team, Remus was the
one who went out and found the perfect broom for him to use. Sirius, instead of looking around at the
brooms, spent the time boasting about Harry's accomplishment to anyone who
would stand still long enough.
Near the end of the school year,
Sirius was waiting anxiously for the owl that would tell them if Gryffindor
made it into the Championship game.
Remus was just as interested in the answer, but knew that one of the two
of them needed to remain sane, and therefore, proceeded to keep up routine.
The AniMagus burst into the kitchen
early one morning, waving a parchment madly as he rushed to Remus. The werewolf barely managed to hold the
other man back from knocking them both into the frying pan full of bacon.
“Dumbledore – Harry!” were the first words that came out
understandably, so Remus assumed the boy was in trouble. “So he’s following in your and James’
illustrious shoes after all this time as a good lad?” The notion shocked Sirius into coherency.
“The Dark Lord came after him!” Paper waved in the air between them. Paling, Remus snatched it, reading swiftly.
“Hades and damnation.” He pulled the frying pan off the
burner. “Well, get moving. We’re going to go see Harry, aren’t we?”
“Right.” Sirius bolted out of the kitchen to throw jeans and a t-shirt on,
while Remus tidied the kitchen quickly.
When they Flooed into Dumbledore’s
office, the Headmaster was waiting for them.
“Please, sit. I want a word with
both of you. Mr. Potter is fine; Miss
Granger and Mr. Weasley are sitting with him in the infirmary.”
“How did Voldemort come back,
sir?” Remus’ worried gaze was still
sharp, his voice controlled.
“He possessed the Professor of
Defense Against the Dark Arts. But this
defeat will set him back. It will buy
us time.”
“Time for what? Him to waltz back in here and kill
Harry?” Sirius was slouched in his
chair, a posture he had taken many times before in Dumbledore’s office.
“Time for us to take
precautions. Remus, I’d like for you to
take over Defense Against the Dark Arts.”
“But…”
“Dumbledore raised a hand. “Please, hear me out. Professor Snape tells me that there’s been a
breakthrough. The Wolfsbane Potion will
allow you to keep your mind when you transform. You’ll be perfectly safe around the children.”
“A potion…” Remus was shocked, happiness creeping in the
edges.
“With you teaching here, I’m sure
Mr. Black will be here as well?” The
tilted head and twinkling blue eyes didn’t quite pull off
innocence. Sirius nodded. “Between the two of you, you’ll manage
security quite well enough for me to spend more time hunting for Voldemort.”
“Will our relationship be a problem,
Headmaster?”
“I doubt it. We will keep Sirius as secret as possible
from the student body. I’m sure you’ll
think of something, Mr. Black.”
The sharp blue gaze and raised eyebrow invited Sirius to confide, but
the younger man was too worried to bother with anything else.
“Can we go see Harry, now that
this’s sorted out?” The Animagus was
practically vibrating in his seat.
“Yes, yes, Mr. Black. Please do.”
Neither man stayed long enough to hear Dumbledore chuckle.
Harry was sitting up, playing
Exploding Snap with his friends. When
he caught sight of Sirius and Remus, his grin was huge. “Uncle Sirius! Remus!”
The dark-haired man hurried forward,
pausing slightly before leaning down and hugging the boy. Remus held back knowing that with the other
kids it was better to keep his distance.
“Harry, you’ve worried your godfather so badly he dragged me here with
him.” The subtle coolness in the
werewolf's voice registered in Harry, and he turned to Ron and Hermione.
“This is my godfather, Sirius Black,
and an old friend of my parents’, Remus Lupin.
This is Hermione and Ron.”
“We went to school with your mum,
Ron, though she was a few years ahead.
I saw you at start of school, at the train station.” Ron nodded, mumbling a hello.
“Pleased to meet you.” Hermione tugged on Ron’s arm. “C’mon. We’ve got to get back for class.”
As soon as they’d left, Sirius
warded the cubicle while Remus hugged Harry.
“You’ve worried us both, young man.
And now you’ll have to deal with having us around all the time.”
“What do you mean, Uncle Remus?”
“Dumbledore’s asked Moony to teach
Defense. And I’m to be the skulking
bodyguard.”
“Really?”
Remus’ brow furrowed with worry. “Well, yes, but if you’re not comfortable
with that…”
“It’s going to be so cool!” Harry launched himself into Remus’ arms, the
older man catching him with an ‘ooph’ of breath. “Your lessons never seem like lessons, and you do all the
interesting stuff, and…and…and…”
“Slow down! I’m glad you’re not upset.”
“But why don’t you want people to
know you know me?” His expression was
the same hangdog look of despair that James used to wear, complete with
disheveled hair.
“Because we don’t want people to think
that I’ll play favorites. But we’ll
make plenty of time for you – especially as I’m sure Dumbledore gave you James’
cloak back.” The werewolf raised an
eyebrow, and Harry’s gaze slid away from him.
“Shoulda known you’d know about
that. Do I have to give it up?”
“Of course not. Fine Marauding tradition you’re carrying
on. Father would be proud.” Sirius’ grin was huge, his voice gruff. “We’ll be off now though, my boy, to keep
suspicions down. CONSTANT
VIGILENCE!” The older men exchanged a
look and started laughing, while Harry shook his head. He hugged them both goodbye and settled in
with the book Remus pulled out of his pocket for him.
They Flooed back to their house from
the Headmaster’s office. “We’ll have to
spend this summer packing, and warding the house for us to be gone most of the
time.” Remus resumed making their
abandoned breakfast as Sirius collapsed at the table.
“You’ll have to bring me to school
as a dog.”
“You’re going to enjoy that, aren’t
you?”
“Probably.”
Remus found a Muggle couple to run
the bookstore for them, while Sirius and Harry spent the summer packing what
the two men would need during the term.
The day they were to take the train
to school was rainy. Harry was much too
excited, especially as he’d been allowed to spend part of the holiday with Ron
at the Burrow. The two boys rushed off
to find Hermione and secure a compartment.
Remus watched them go by,
amused. A few minutes later Sirius
padded to his side in dog form. The
werewolf looked at the large black dog, dropping one hand to the large furry
head. “Shall we, Padfoot?” Without waiting for an answer, he strode
forward to find a place on the train.
Remus broke away from Sirius’
overenthusiastic version of unpacking to answer the knock on the door. Severus Snape stood on the other side,
struggling to contain a smile. “Remus.”
“Severus.” He lounged against the door, unable to resist flirting a
little. “Did I forget a detention,
Potions Master?”
The flash of amusement in the dark
eyes was quickly hidden. “Still
laughing, I see.”
Sobering, Remus nodded. “I’m sorry – I know you always wanted to
teach Defense. But imagine how bad I
would be at Potions!”
“I was impressed with how much
you’ve taught Mr. Potter.”
“How did you know that it was me?”
“The boy uses the same appalling
system for taking notes that you did.”
Snape’s frown turned into a smile for a moment at the memory. “I expected him to be much more witless.”
“Harry is very bright, and,
thankfully, doesn’t have my bad luck with brewing.” Remus’ smile was wry.
“Indeed.” Snape held a flask out.
“I’ve brought the Wolfsbane Potion.
I’ll have to brew it fresh every month for you. And no, I am not going to attempt to teach
you how. Perhaps if Mr. Potter
improves, I will teach him.”
“You always said you’d find
this.” Remus blinked, remembering back
to their years as students.
“I found nothing. I have spent quite a bit of time on creating
this particular brew.”
“Thank you, Severus. For keeping a promise that I dismissed as foolish
pride.” The quiet words hung in the air
between them as they stared at one another for a long moment, neither sure what
to say.
“Moony…” Sirius stopped dead when he
saw Snape.
“Black.”
“Snape.” The two glared at one another until Remus thanked the other
professor again and gently shooed him away.
“Snape brought the Wolfsbane Potion
for me.” Remus set the flask carefully
on his desk.
“Why were you talking to him?” Starlight silver eyes glinted from under the
shaggy hair falling into Sirius’ face.
“He’d made me a promise, long ago,
and he fulfilled it when he gave me this potion.” His voice sharpened.
“Please tell me that you’re not going to start the old war between you
two again.”
“It’s hard not to. He used to say things about you, Remus,
horrible untrue things.”
“He was jealous. Of the friendship we had, of the security we
had in being liked, of the fun we had.
Jealous, Sirius, because even the werewolf had a better childhood
and school years than he did.” Remus
ran a hand over his hair, down his face where the scars cut into his skin. “He always knew how I felt about you. He would try so hard not to throw it in my
face when he tutored me, but that just made him taunt you more. You had everything that he wanted. Pure blood, status, charm, friends.”
“He spread hurtful rumors about
you.”
“And you nearly had me kill him for
you.” They glared at one another, the
black-haired Potions Master forever a bone of contention between them, and
finally Sirius sighed, and apologized.
It was a little less than two weeks
into the school term when Professor Lupin caught the Weasley twins with the
Marauder’s Map. He confiscated it with
an inward sigh of relief; part of him had always been nervous about letting the
powerful little joke out of their hands.
Sirius was dozing in their room when
Remus came in after dinner and chucked the parchment at him. “Fancy meeting you here.”
“Moony…!” He opened sleepy silver eyes to see his lover perched at the foot
of their bed, grinning a grin he hadn’t seen in nearly thirteen years. Looking at what had been thrown at him, he
began grinning as well. “Great
googly! Our map! I thought Filch still had this?” Grabbing his wand, he quietly breathed the
words to activate the magic.
“Seems the Weasley twins are more
like you and James than we could imagine.
They nicked it their first year.”
“This is going to make patrolling so
much easier.”
“I bet we could add an alarm to
it. So that it would sound if anyone
unauthorized came onto the grounds.”
“You always were the brains. It’ll be delicate. Could take us a while.”
“We’re here for the next six
years. It’s worth the effort.” Remus pulled parchment out of his desk with
a flick of his wand. “First, we make
some copies to practice on.”
If Professor Lupin seemed unusually
tired, most of his students put it down to the complicated lessons he kept
coming up with, not to mischief.
When the attacks began, and the
horrific writing on the wall was found, Dumbledore called the staff together to
form precautions. Afterwards, Remus and
Sirius sought the Headmaster out.
“How can I help you? Both of you seem to be settling in just
fine…”
“It’s about the Chamber of
Secrets.” Remus shifted in his
seat. “You see…”
“What he’s trying to get out is that
we’ve mapped this whole place, and we think we know where the Chamber is. We just don’t know how to open it.”
“Great Merlin. How?”
Piercing blue eyes were wide with amazement.
“C’mon, Dumbledore, by now you know
I’m an unregistered Animagus.” Sirius
grinned at the slow nod. “So were James
and…Peter.” It was still hard for
Sirius to say that name.
“And the four of you mapped
Hogwarts? Fascinating.” He took the Marauder’s Map from Remus, who
already had it activated. “This is incredible. You did this when you were teenagers?”
“It took us three years; most of
that time was crawling through the building.
And getting the names to come out properly.”
“You realize how dangerous this
could be?”
“It’s got a code to turn it on and
off.”
“And revealing spells just make it
insult the caster.”
“Brilliant. Watch this carefully. We must discover the Chamber’s
secrets.” The Headmaster steepled his
fingers, watching the younger wizards leave.
“I always said they were some of the brightest wizards of the age.”
Remus was cleaning up after his last
lesson when Harry stopped in. “Un – Professor
Lupin?”
“Come in, Harry.” The werewolf warded the room.
“What’s wrong?”
“I’m – this is going to sound
mental, Uncle Remus.”
“That’s fine. I’m used to it. Most of the things out of Sirius’ mouth do.” He sat the boy down and fetched them both
cups of tea. Harry frowned, and finally
blurted it out.
“I’m hearing voices in the
walls. And no one else can hear
anything!” There was fear in the
twelve-year-old’s eyes, and it pained Remus to see.
“You’re not mad, if that’s what’s
worrying you.” Remus calmly sipped his
tea. “Let’s look at this
logically. We already know that Salazar
Slytherin’s Chamber has been opened. It
would stand to reason that strange things will start happening due to
that. So all we have to do is figure
out what kind of strange happening this is.”
“You always make everything sound
logical.”
“Finish your tea and relax. We’ll get to the bottom of this.” But even Remus was a little worried as he
recounted it to Sirius.
Events continued on unabated as the
months passed. Remus was spending all
of his spare time studying; often he would cross paths with Harry, Ron and
Hermione as they searched for answers.
Sirius split his time between patrolling with the Map and watching the
room the Chamber’s entrance was in.
Which was how he and Remus ended up
following Harry and Ron, who were following other clues. Remus ended up on one side of the cave-in,
with Ron, while Harry and his godfather (in dog form) landed on the other side.
While Remus and Ron worked on
clearing the fallen debris, Harry and Sirius continued on to discover Ginny
Weasley being possessed by the spirit of Voldemort’s teenage self. Harry fell into the journal, while Sirius
turned human and got Ginny safely back to Remus.
By the time the older wizard got
back to his godson, Fawkes the Phoenix had already brought the boy the tools he
needed to defeat the apparition – and the basilisk.
Both Harry and Ginny ended up in the
Infirmary, where Dumbledore spoke reassuringly with both of them. Before he left, the Headmaster turned back
to the boy. “Are you sure you are happy
having your guardians here?”
Harry was propped up on pillows,
blinking a little sleepily from the healing potion. “Of course, Headmaster.
Why wouldn’t I be?”
“It can be a difficult thing indeed,
Mr. Potter, having your guardians so close to look over your shoulder.” There was sadness in Dumbledore’s eyes.
“Uncle Remus and Uncle Sirius give
me all the space I need. But I know
that they’re there when I need them.
They’re the absolute best.”
“Then I’m glad. I’d hoped they’d become the family you will
need.” He left, leaving Harry to wonder
what he’d meant.
Summer passed quickly, and Harry
begged to be allowed to have Ron over for his birthday. After much discussion, Sirius agreed, and
Ron popped through the Floo with his overnight bag on July 29th, a
little confused when it was Professor Lupin who greeted him. “Sirius and Harry aren’t back from the
market yet.”
“What are you doing here, Professor
Lupin?” The boy turned as red as his
hair and stammered an apology while Remus laughed quietly.
“It’s alright, Ron. We’re not at school, so please call me
Remus. As to what I’m doing here – well
– this is my house.” He sighed as Harry
and Sirius burst in, hands filled with bags.
“Kitchen, please!” He pointed,
cutting them off from dropping everything in the living room to say hi to Ron.
“Moonikins, Harry and I want to go
to the cinema.” Sirius hung on Remus’
shoulder, his tone wheedling. “Ron’s
never been before.”
“I don’t know. The last time we went…” Harry jumped in to cut off the recitation of
their misbehavior.
“We’ll be good, Uncle Remus. And it’s my birthday.”
“You do Muggle things?” Ron was stunned. “And you live with Professor Lupin?”
“Uh…” Harry exchanged a glance with his uncles. He had obviously not even considered what
explanations he’d have to make to his friend. With a grin, Sirius stepped in,
clapping Ron on the back.
“It has to be a secret that Harry
lives with Remus. Cause of the teaching
position. We’re there as security, for
Dumbledore.”
“Blimey. How come we’ve never seen you?”
“You have. Uncle Sirius is Padfoot.
He’s an AniMagus.”
“Precisely. And we chose to raise Harry with an
understanding of the Muggle world. He
went to school, has Muggle friends, and everything. It’s important to understand all of your heritages when you’re a
half-blood.” Remus finished putting the
groceries away as he spoke. “After
dinner we can go to the cinema. Go and
pick a show, Harry and Ron. Sirius, you
can set the table.”
As the boys left the kitchen, they
heard Ron ask, “Are they – you know?”
“They’re my uncles – we’ve been a
family since I was five.”
Remus made Sirius explain to Ron why
he was transfigured to look like a woman when they went to see the film.
It took Ron two days to get used to
seeing the older men come out of the same bedroom, and to seeing Sirius mauling
Remus for attention, though he continued to blush bright red well into the
school term every time he saw Professor Lupin.
