Sansa. This one for you again girl. Long as you’re reading I’ll keep throwing ‘em out as best I can. Hope ya had a good Christmas.
Chapter 3 Hexing the new girl
Headmaster Dumbledor and Professor MacGonagall sat and listened to Severus’ account of what had happened when he went out in search of the intruder during the welcome feast that evening. “Honestly Albus, she’s a bloody lunatic.”
“No I’m not.”
“Severus, she is afraid.” Albus told him.
“And she certainly rattled your cage.” quipped Minerva with a chuckle. “I never thought I would see the day that someone gave the mighty Severus a wedgie. Especially a little thing like Jane is.”
Severus gave her his best glare, but it had no effect on Minerva. She had known him since he was a child himself and still thought of him as such. She and Albus had thought of him as a son for many years now.
He chose to ignore her as he continued. “Albus, she has to go. She is a obviously a muggle. Though how she even found the place is beyond me. You know they cannot see Hogwarts.”
““Severus I must ask you this. You put a silencing spell upon her before entering the castle, did you not?”
“Yes. What of it?”
“Did you remove it as we reached this office?”
“No, I… who did then? I remember that she shouted something and then threw up down the back of my robes. The only spells that went through my mind at that time were extremely painful ones.”
“Did either of you also notice her reaction when Poppy handed her that potion?”
“Severus sighed. So she knows a few herbal remedies. So what!”
“There is more to her then meets the eye. She appears to know about the Order. She also knows about your role in the war Severus. How do you explain that.”
“You know I can not Albus. We should just Obliviate her and send her on her way. First thing in the morning would best. She‘s a street kid She knows how to survive and we have no valid reason to keep her here.” Severus was being at his nastiest. He had already decided that he hated her more than he hated Potter.
“Albus we can’t. I myself have a strange feeling about this girl. Though I can not for the life of me figure out why.”
“I agree with you Minerva. Look at how she reacted when I touched her hand.”
“Oh come on. She thought I was a ruddy vampire. Merlin knows what she thought you were going to do to her.”
“The only reason she thought you were a vampire is because you look like one. If she has come from the muggle world then you have probably made her think that she is round the twist by now.”
“Me. I am the injured party here. I am the one with the black eye. And I am the one with bruises on my shins.”
“Yes, well. As it is well past midnight and you both have classes in the morning, I think we should retire for the night. We can meet in here at 11am tomorrow with Jane and try to get some answers. I shall cancel the start of year staff meeting. Goodnight, Severus. Minerva.”
They both knew it was a dismissal and it was no use trying to carry in. When Albus said goodnight, he meant it.
Minerva let the potions master go ahead of her and popped her head back into the office. “Oh Albus. Did you notice her hair colour and her eyes. Even her skin one. Don’t you think she bares an uncanny resemblance to someone we know.” Then she left with a smirk on her face.
Yes. He had noticed the similarities.
Up in the infirmary, Poppy had put Jane in a bed near to her office so that she would be able to get to her quickly if she awoke. It was unlikely that she would though as Poppy had given her a sleeping potion after putting her into one of the hospital nightgowns. ‘The poor dear didn’t even wake up when I changed her.’ she thought. She knew she would not be included when the girl was questioned tomorrow, but she would take a bottle up to Minerva’s private rooms tomorrow evening and find out all the gossip then. Poppy decided to do a full diagnostic on the girl while she was sleeping, she was disturbed to discover that she was not a virgin. After all, the girl had just reached her seventeenth birthday so she must have had sex when she was under age. Anyway, nothing she could do about it now. With that thought she went to bed.
Severus had not drunk anything stronger than butter beer since the return of the Dark Lord two years ago. Even before that he would not indulge during term time. No, he need his wits about him with the classes full of dunderheads he had to teach each day. That and having to keep saving the life of that insufferable brat, Potter. Him and his hanger on’s, Know it all Granger and the Weasley brat. They were bad enough but the little chit he had found this evening really took the biscuit. ‘Why did he have to be the one that found her. Why couldn’t she have been in one of the greenhouses for Sprout to find. Sod it’ he thought to himself, heading to his drinks cabinet and pouring out a very large firewiskey. He swallowed half of it down in one go, relishing the burn as it slid down his throat, and headed into the bedroom. After taking his clothes off and climbing into bed naked, he finished his firewiskey, said “nox” and settled down for the night.
Albus was not so lucky. He knew he was missing something here but he could not seem to figure out what it was. Unfortunately, his mind would not quieten down end let him sleep. So he spent an almost sleepless night, thinking about the events of this evening and not coming up with any answers.
The following morning dawned bright and clear. Birds could be heard twittering out side the windows as the sun shone through them. Jane thought for a moment that she had gone blind when she opened her eyes to the brilliance that was flooding over her. Turning her head to the side she saw that she was in a large room, painted all in white, with bed lined up neat and ready for occupancy along both the main walls. As she was pushing herself up to sit a woman came towards her carrying a tray. It was the woman who had given her the medicine last night.
“Good morning dear. Are you feeling up to a bit of breakfast?”
“Ye¾
yes please.”
“Here you are. I wasn’t sure what you liked so I had a bit of everything sent up for you.”
Poppy carefully placed the tray on the bed for her and Jane looked stunned at it. “You first” she said to the medi witch.
“Me first what dear?”
“Well, you eat your breakfast and I’ll take what’s left“
“I have already eaten Jane. This is for you.”
As Poppy looked down at the girl in the bed she saw that her eyes were filled with tears.
“Why are you doing this?”
“Doing what?”
“Being nice to me. Giving me all this food to myself. Not shouting at me.”
‘Merlin. What had this child been through before she came here.’ “I am only treating you the same way that I would treat anyone who is in my care. You have done nothing wrong that I know of that would make me want to treat you badly. A far as the food is concerned, Last night I got the impression that you have not had regular meals in quite a while. And since you are most certainly not deaf, I have no reason to shout at you. Now come on, eat as much as you want and then you can take a bath while I about finding you something clean to wear.” Giving her a smile and a quick hug Poppy headed of to her store cupboard to rummage through the lost property before she began to cry herself. She was bound to have something half decent robes in here. ’Poor little might’ she thought. ’why am I being kind? Expecting to have to eat my leftover breakfast. Makes you wonder what the world is coming to.’
Severus entered the great hall for breakfast, scowling as usual. His long strides took him quickly down the aisle between the Ravenclaw and Griffindor tables. As usual, his robes billowed out behind him. “Good morning Severus.” The head master greeted him as he took his seat. Severus looked briefly at him, a small nod his only acknowledgment.
He rarely spoke at meal times unless he had to, and idle chatter did not interest him. Come 11 o’clock he would find out if the brat was going to be sent on her way and until then, he had students to frighten. That thought almost made him smirk. But only almost. Holding it back was not a problem for him. Putting on his most intimidating glare, he slowly cast his eyes around the different house tables. Lingering for just a moment longer on the ‘Golden Trio’ he continued until he came to his own house. Slytherin. Only marginally softening his glare, he took stock of the new batch. Last night he’d not had the opportunity to give his usual welcome speech to the new intake, and as such had not had the chance to ensure that they knew he was not to be messed with.
Severus’ first class of the day was first years, Hufflepuff/Ravenclaw. This was his favourite part of the new school year. Walking into the classroom he waved his hand at the door so that it banged loudly against the wall and hard enough that it swung back and slammed closed again. The whole class of student jumped, their faces white and not one of them said a word. Sitting at his desk he called the register. Once it was established that everyone was present, he rose and stepped to the front of his desk, sweeping his eyes across the sea of frightened looking faces in front of him. “You are here to learn the subtle science and exact art of is potion making.” He spoke softly. He knew that they would hear every word that passed his lips. “There is little foolish wand-waving in this class.” He carried on with his first years speech, it was the same one he gave every year and he knew it by heart. Every teacher at Hogwarts had there own first years greeting. MacGonagall would change into her animagus form of a cat, and then back to human form again. This always got everyone’s attention. Luckily, divination did not start until third year. Trellawny would always predict that at least one of them would meet some terrible fate. Which normally ended up with Madam Pomfrey having to dose them with chocolate while their hysterics eased and she considered them mentally stable enough to continue with their classes.
Finally the bell went to signal the end of the class. It was too early to be certain but, he was sure that he had at least two Longbottom wannabe,s in amongst this lot. Both Hufflepuffs. As for the rest, it remained to be seen. After sending them all scuttling away he made sure that the classroom was ready for his sixth year Slytherin/Griffndors. ‘Why the fuck Albus insisted on these house combinations he had no idea.’
It was five minutes to eleven so he locked the classroom door, warded it heavily and made his way towards the headmasters office.
On arrival he was not surprised to find that the young chit was already there. Minerva entered directly behind him. She was sitting in an armchair, by the fire with a glass if milk in her hand staring at nothing in particular, with an amazed look on her face. Albus looked over to Severus with the most maddening twinkle in his bright blue eyes. “Ah, Severus, Minerva. I am so glad you are here. Jane and I have been having what you could call a learning experience. Isn’t that so Jane?“
She started at her name, so lost in her own thoughts that she had not even head the arrival and subsequent exchanges between the three professors.
“S¾
sorry?” Suddenly brought back to reality, she turned around in her seat to face them.
Minerva stepped forward, smiling kindly. “Good morning Miss White.”
“Hello” Jane smiled back. She looked to professor Snape but he did not speak. He, as was his way, was standing rigidly straight with his arms folded and a frown on his face, so she said nothing more.
“Severus, Minerva, please sit. What you are about to discover will come as something of a surprise.” Albus went to stand next to Jane. “Jane does in fact come from a muggle background. About a year after Voldemort ‘Minerva cringed a little at the name’ made his attack on the Potters, some rogue Death Eaters attacked another family. The White’s. Nothing is known about them. Auras arrived that night to find the Dark Mark over their home and the bodies of Mr and Mrs White in the living room. After checking quickly through what was left of the house, they found no evidence of anyone other than the couple downstairs. Because our world believed Voldemort to be dead, they did not look too closely. They removed the Dark Mark they left, leaving it for the local police to deal with. What the aurors did miss was the two year old toddler who had managed to somehow slip past the Death Eaters and get out through the back door and hide behind a bush in the back garden. Apparently the Death Eaters had made such a mess of the house that it was impossible to distinguish what the different rooms upstairs had been used for. Though we do not know how she came to end up with Mr and Mrs Falls, there she stayed, until running away at the age of fifteen. She has survived by her own wits since then.”
During the telling of this, Severus and Minerva had been quiet, wondering where it was going. I think Severus, that it would be prudent for you and I to pay a visit to Falls Farm sometime soon. Perhaps we find answers to question I dare not think of yet.
“Let us go to the room of requirement.” Albus told them. “I have already been there with Jane this morning so it is ready for us. This was a special room in the castle that, when most needed, would equip itself to exactly what was need.
“Right” Said Albus. “Jane, would you stand please.” They had discussed what they were going to do that morning, before the arrival of the two professors. Jane stood and walked over to face the potions master. “Severus, if you would care to stand and face Jane.”
Headmaster. Would you care to explain what is going on here.”
“All shall be revealed Severus. Please humour me for now.”
“Now Severus, if you would take out your wand, aim it at Jane, and send a spell of your choosing at her.”
Severus’ eyebrows shot up out of view. “WHAT!”
“Albus. What are you playing at? You can not expect him to attack a defenceless child. She does not even have a wand. She is a muggle.”
“Albus. I refuse to do this.“ Albus only smiled a little.
“Come on vampire. You scared of me? Think you might miss? I promise to keep still. Won’t move from this spot look. C’mon bloodsucker. I’ll make it easy for you.”
Severus was enraged. This creature in front of him was trying to goad him, ‘and doing a bloody good job of it too’ and Albus was smiling at her.
“I don’t bloody believe this. What the hell do you expect me to do headmaster?”
Minerva meanwhile had instinctively moved over to the girl. She was in protective mode. “Albus. I have no idea what is going through you r head but……”
Please Minerva. Trust me. No harm will come to her. Calm yourself and sit down.” He spoke kindly to her. Severus, please go ahead.”
Severus stood looking from Albus to the girl, unsure what to do next.
“C’mon Grumpy. I know you want to hurt me. Especially after that wedgie I gave you last night. How about Crutio? You haven’t used that one for a long time have you?”
‘The little bitch had gone too far.’ he thought. ’And how did she know when he had last used the Crutio?’ “Very well. But you will take responsibility for whatever occurs here today Albus.”
“I will Severus. Do not worry.”
He rolled his eyes and pointed his wand at the grinning little girl who was looking at him so brazenly. ‘She certainly seemed confident with herself.’ “Torsgelare” a bright blue light shot out of the end of his wand and encircled the girl. She smiled even wider at him as she absorbed the blue light into herself. That was it. Nothing else happened. Severus Looked up at Albus, who was openly grinning by now. Minerva had her hands over her eyes and was peeping from between her fingers. Her mouth open in disbelief.
“That the best you can do? Try something a bit meaner.”
Severus was interested now, though he wasn’t too happy with the name calling. ‘Lets see how she deals with this one.’ “Serpensortia” A snake appeared in front of Jane. She didn’t bat an eyelid. With a barely perceptible wave of her had the snake had disappeared. Severus tried one last thing. “Imperio” he shouted. The spell hit Jane and bounced right back at the potions master.
“Dance for me.” Jane said mischievously.
He didn’t, but it took every ounce of will power that he had to resist the spell. He could feel his legs twitching and wanting to move of their own accord.
Albus waved his had and the spell was broken.
Jane looked disappointed.
Severus looked relieved. He was finding it increasingly hard to resist the urge to dance. He kept his expression neutral. Refusing to admit that he had nearly given in and danced. ‘Merlin. How embarrassing would that have been.
“Thank you Severus” Albus said, walking towards the girl and giving her a wink. “Well done Jane.” She winked back at him.
“Minerva. If you would be so kind as to change into your animagus.”
Minerva moved away from the chair that she had been perched on. Walking towards him she began to morph and shrink and a moment later, instead of a person, professor MacGonagall was a small, grey tabby cat. Jane looked down at her, smiled and did likewise. Now there were two identical grey tabby cats sitting on the floor, staring at each other in the ROR. One of them had a shocked expression on its face. Well as much as cats can look shocked. Albus clapped his hands with glee, while Severus actually had to sit down, his legs were actually shaking.
“How Albus? I¾
I really don’t understand what is happening here.”
“I too would like an explanation.” said Minerva. Both females had reverted back to human their form.
“All in good time.” Albus told them, smiling merrily. “Severus. Ask Jane for the ingredients of any potion you wish. Make it one that is well outside of the range of any student at Hogwarts. You decide which one, the more advanced the better.
“Miss White, tell me the process you would follow to make Veritaserum.” Jane did. Down to every last detail. But not as it was given in the text books. No Jane described the making of this potion as Severus himself would make it. His own personal brew.
“Wolfsbane” Again she told him the recipe and process, how many stirs both clockwise and counter clockwise, when and how to add each different ingredient and how they should be prepared, the correct temperatures at various stages of making the potion. Again it was his own personal brew. All the improvements he had made to it over the years. Improvements of which he had never discussed with anyone.
“Lunch time.” Albus piped up.
One happy headmaster, two very subdued professors, both bursting with questions to which they knew Albus would only answer when he was ready, and one, for the moment, extremely smug young lady, left the ROR to head down for lunch. Each of them wrapped up in their own thoughts.
As they were nearing the main hall Jane noticed hundreds of boys and girls, all of various age, size and colouring. All of them heading for the great hall. Many of them had noticed the appearance of the headmaster along with professor Snape and MacGonagall. Most that had seen the professors had also seen Jane. They were looking openly at her, curious as to who she was. Her smugness left her immediately and she suddenly felt very nervous and uncomfortable when she saw their questioning looks. So she did what any self respecting young lady would do. She hid behind professor Snape, clutching the back of his robes the back of his robe for all she was worth.
Severus hid his smirk behind his usual scowl. “Miss White” he said quietly. “I have no wish to fall headlong down the stairs in front of the entire student body, so I would appreciate it if you would ‘let go of my robes.’ Jane didn’t. She just held on tighter.
As they reached the doors to the great hall, most of the student were seated at their house tables and were chattering and speculating about the new arrival at the school. Who she was, where she came from, was she muggleborn or pureblood.
Imagine their expressions when one professor Snape, not quite strode into the hall with his billowing robe not billowing because it was dragging a young girl behind it. The look on his face daring them to make comment. Jane’s eyes darted from side to side. Trying to keep up with the vampire was hard. His legs were so long that she had to run to keep up with him. The trouble was that gripping onto someone from behind made running difficult. As it was that the pair of them awkwardly made their way to the head table.
Severus was seething by now. He no longer had a smirk to hide. ‘You will bloody pay for this Albus.’
Finally, after taking twice as long as it should have, Severus made the staff table. He had heard the sniggers coming from the different tables. Especially Griffindor. They were laughing openly. He did not have to look to know that even some of his own house were snickering behind their hands. Trying to pull his chair out to sit down whilst at the same time trying to prise the stupid bloody girl from the back of his robes was too much for him now. When Minerva was his face, she and Albus stopped chortling and she quickly intercepted. Pulling out the chair next to her. “Here you are Jane. Sit next to me.”
Jane let go of Snape’s robes and sat down in the seat offered to he.
“Thank you Professor MacGonagall.”
Unfortunately for Snape, his seat was also next to hers. Also, unfortunately for him was the fact that as soon as he was seated, Jane moved her chair across so that she was sitting so close to him that their arms were touching. And he had to keep his knees pulled together to avoid her legs touching his. He was not comfortable for him.
Jane had not consciously done this. Nor was she aware that she felt safer when she was close to the potions master. But she did. The vampire, (she knew he wasn’t one but that was how she thought of him now) Professor MacGonagall, Headmaster Dumbledor and the nurse were her world now. They had treat her kindly since she had turned up here. Well, maybe not the vampire, but she knew that their was a lot more to him under the mean, hard veneer that he showed to the world. Plus so many strange things had happened to her in the last twenty four hours. She hoped that they would not make her leave yet. She wanted answers too.
