“Firs' years! Firs' years this way!” Harry makes a beeline for the half-giant, followed closely by her three companions.
Once the first years have all arrived, Hagrid leads them down a narrow, wet stone path that leads right down into a cove filled with small boats.
“Four to a boat!”
Harry, Hermione, Daphne, and Draco claim a boat all to themselves. The four of them sit close, but a proper distance from each other. The boats slowly creak across the lake. Once outside of the small cove, the students get their first glimpse of Hogwarts.
Harry smiles. “The pictures don't do it justice.”
Hermione nods her agreement. “You can almost feel the hum of the magic coming from it.”
Daphne smiles as well. “This is more than just a school, girls. This is a magic school.” The way she says magic gives it far more connotations and her friends nod their agreement.
Draco doesn't say anything. He isn't looking at the school. He took only a glance at it before returning his gaze to the three girls. These three girls who are more like sisters than friends. He can't help but feel like a stranger amongst them.
~*~*~*~*~
The journey across the lake is rather uneventful, even as the girls talk to each other and Draco sits by himself, pondering what he's gotten himself into.
Hagrid, the half-giant, leaves them in the care of a very stern looking witch who calls herself Minerva McGonagall. She leads them into a small room across from two huge doors and leaves the first years there.
While she is gone, a very annoying boy with red hair and blue eyes calls attention to himself.
“Where's Harry Potter? My father told me that Harry Potter would be here this year.”
Hermione and Daphne glare at the boy while Harry simply tries to disappear. Sadly, she hasn't learned that trick yet.
“Well, c'mon Harry! My name's Ron Weasley.” He looks around the room expectantly. When no one comes forward, his eyes darken. “Figures. He's probably too important to talk to the likes of me.”
Draco is now also glaring at the boy. He looks over at Harry to see that both Hermione and Daphne are trying to calm the shaking girl. Draco walks over.
“What's wrong?”
Hermione looks up at him. “I don't know.”
Draco looks down at Harry. She seems to be muttering something. Draco leans in closer to hear it. “Make him stop. Make him stop talking. They don't need to know. Make him stop.” The mutterings get faster and more slurred together as she continues.
Draco turns to the Weasley boy who is still ranting about how “important” Harry Potter is. Draco's glare ups in wattage. He does the only thing he can think of: he insults the boy.
“You're right, Weasley. Harry Potter is too important to talk to you.” Every eye is now on Draco. Harry, Hermione, and Daphne are staring at him accusingly. “But its not because he's famous. No. Harry Potter's too important to talk to you because you obviously only want to be friends with him because he's famous.” Ron blushes scarlet. He opens his mouth to say something, but Draco continues. “No. I don't need to hear any pathetic excuse you could possibly come up with.”
Draco looks at Daphne, and she continues. “Draco's right. We don't need to hear anything you could possibly spew out that you feel would condone your actions. Do you see any boy in this room matching Harry Potter's description?” The boys all take the time to look around the room. No boy fits the description of Harry Potter. At least, not the one that was published in the Prophet. “No. I don't either. So, we seem to find ourselves in a bit of a bind here, Mr. Weasley. Either the prophet lied about what he looked like,” every boy looks at the boy next to them accusingly, “or Harry Potter isn't in this room. Maybe he's already out there. Maybe he's not here yet. I don't know.”
Ron, once again, turns crimson and looks down shamefacedly.
Professor McGonagall returns at this point to lead the children into the Great Hall to be sorted. Hermione immediately walks to the front of the line. Harry stands behind her, then Daphne, then Draco. They stand like a protective shield around their slowly recovering friend.
To try and get her to laugh, Hermione and Daphne start making a list. Its a list of things they would do if they ever decided to turn dark and take over the world.
“My ventilation ducts will be too small to crawl through. ” Nothing.
“The artifact which is the source of my power will not be kept on the Mountain of Despair beyond the River of Fire guarded by the Dragons of Eternity. It will be in my safe-deposit box. The same applies to the object which is my one weakness.” Nothing, Not even a smile.
“I will not include a self-destruct mechanism unless absolutely necessary. If it is necessary, it will not be a large red button labeled "Danger: Do Not Push". The big red button marked "Do Not Push" will instead trigger a spray of bullets on anyone stupid enough to disregard it. Similarly, the ON/OFF switch will not clearly be labeled as such.” Nothing.
Draco decides to join in. “One of my advisors will be an average five-year-old child. Any flaws in my plan that he is able to spot will be corrected before implementation.” Harry smiles. The girls also smile. They wave Draco on, encouraging him to continue.
“No matter how tempted I am with the prospect of unlimited power, I will not consume any energy field bigger than my head.” Harry's smile widen a little.
As they talk, Hermione's called up to the front to be sorted. Within seconds, the hat calls out “Slytherin!”
“All naive, busty tavern wenches in my realm will be replaced with surly, world-weary waitresses who will provide no unexpected reinforcement and/or romantic subplot for the hero or his sidekick.” Harry giggles lightly as Daphne's name is called.
She, too, is sorted into Slytherin.
Draco continues on, even though the other two are gone. “I will dress in bright and cheery colors, and so throw my enemies into confusion.” Harry pauses, looks over Draco, and laughs. She laughs so hard that the entire hall stops to stare at her. Draco waits a minute and then takes on an offended countenance. “Are you implying that I would not look good in bright, cheery colors?”
Harry laughs harder still and several nearby students, who heard what Draco said, laugh as well. After a few moments, the laughter dies down enough that the sorting continues. Several people still look at Harry, wondering what she was laughing about, but quickly return their attention to the sorting.
Harry and Draco also turn their attention to the sorting. They both note the hat sitting atop some nameless student's head and watch with interest. The hat shouts out a house name and the student sits there.
The two of them turn to each other and raise a brow. “I wonder why that's never mentioned in any books.”
Draco shrugs his shoulders. “They probably don't want muggle-borns to know that the hat can talk.” Harry looks at him, curious. “They publish so many things in books about our world, but nothing that they truly need to know. Everything in Hogwarts: A History can be learned once you get to Hogwarts. But things that are passed down from Wizard to Wizard, things that everyone in our world should know, are absent. Its no wonder the muggle-borns, and muggle-raised, have such a hard time. Some things, Hogwarts just doesn't teach.”
With that said, Draco is called up to sit on the stool. The hat doesn't even touch his head before it calls out “Slytherin!”.
Harry sighs. What if she isn't called. Even if she is, they won't believe that she's who she says she is. The Wizarding World has grown to know Harry Potter, the boy-who-lived. What will they do when they find out she's a girl?
“Potter, Harry.”
Every neck cranes to look over the line trying to find Harry Potter. They whisper to each other about everything she's supposedly done. Harry sighs as she slowly steps out of her spot and walks to the stool with the hat atop it.
McGonagall doesn't seem to be surprised by her. Neither is Dumbledore. But everyone else is. There are many shouts and accusations that flood her ears before the hat drops over them.
Once in place, all is silent. Harry wonders what will happen now.
::Young Miss Potter. I've been expecting you.::
Harry almost jumps at the voice in her head. ^^Who are you?^^
::I am the sorting hat. I am the one to choose which house will suit you most.::
^^You said you were expecting me?^^
::Aye.::
^^That's what Ollivander said as well.^^
::I'm sure that he did. That man knows everything about anyone who has, and will, enter his store in his lifetime. Just as the person who takes over after him will know everything.::
^^But how will it be Ollivander's, then?^^
The hat chuckles inside her head. ::A name is so easy to change young one. The next person will be Ollivander. Just as the one after that will be Ollivander. And the one after that. And the one after that. Until he is no longer needed.::
Harry ponders on that. ^^What house do you think I should be in?^^
Harry feels the hat rifle through her head a bit. ::I see that you are very smart.:: Harry smiles slightly at the compliment. ::You are also very intelligent, but only about things that will help you.:: Harry nods. ::You don't want to learn everything, so you wouldn't do well in Ravenclaw. In fact, I think you might actually drive them insane.::
Harry chuckles lightly at the comment. ^^I'm sure that I would.^^
::And you are loyal. But you would not fit in with Hufflepuff. They are too nice and goody-goody. They would be loyal allies, but they will run to Dumbledore with things you don't want to be known.::
Harry grimaces as she thinks about her weight, or lack thereof. ^^I wouldn't like that.^^
The hat chuckles. ::No. I'm sure you wouldn't. Gryffindor is also very goody-goody. But they are brave. I see that you are brave, but more interested in keeping yourself alive, and a few select friends, than everyone. No. No. I do not think that you are well-suited for Gryffindor. It had better be:: “Slytherin!”
Harry mentally thanks the hat and gets up. She sets the hat down gently and almost runs to the waiting arms of her friends. Draco smiles at her as she almost cries in relief.
“Jesus Ri! What took so long? You were under that hat for almost five minutes!”
Harry looks at her two best friends. “The hat was judging where I should go. She was very nice. I'm happy she put me here.”
Hermione and Daphne nod in agreement.

I would like to note that I do not own the Evil Overlord List. It belongs to Peter Anspach. And I shall be using it periodically in this fic.
I would also like to mention that Draco's going to be a little weird for a while. I know that he and Harry are going to end up together, but I think my muse is going to make him the veritable "knight in shining armor." After all, Harry has become the proverbial DiD, "Damsel in Distress."
