Sheherazade and Emmylovedraco: Thanks for R&R’ing. Since you both asked, here you go. Don’t know how long this fic will be, or even where it’s going yet, but it’s blocking me from writing any more of No One until I get it out of my system.
CH 3 Cheeky brat
After a good nights sleep Severus was feeling more ready to deal with the girl. He dressed, gathered the items he knew he would need and went to her room. The wards went off just as he reached her door, when he removed them the door flew open and he was flung backwards against the wall as she flew out of the room and crashed into him.
“Ow. Get off me you.” She yelled at him.
Severus grabbed her wrists and spun her round to avoid her flailing fists. “You are the one who hurtled into me. Now calm down and behave yourself.”
“Don’t you tell me what to do. Where am I? Let me go.”
“I shall let you go if you promise to stop kicking and punching me. I do not wish to hurt you.”
“You’d better not.” She told him, but stopped trying to hit him. Where am I? Why am I here? You better not have kidnapped me. I saved your ruddy neck last night. And what’s with the bloody sticks?”
“I shall answer your questions, but first I need to take a look at your leg. Please, go sit on the bed and I shall call Molly.”
“Who’s Molly. I don’t want you to look at my leg. I don’t want you to touch me.”
Molly was already on her way up with Remus and Moody. They’d heard the shouting and came to investigate.
Molly spoke first. “Hello dear, I’m Molly. We don’t know your name.”
Lou looked at her and frowned when she saw the two men advancing from behind her. She backed into the bedroom and tried to slam the door but Severus placed his foot against it to stop her.
“Go away all of you. Don’t you touch me. Where’s my clothes? If you let me go I won’t tell. I promise.”
Severus pushed the door wider and stepped into the room. “No one is going to hurt you. For goodness sake girl, pull yourself together.”
Lou hobbled over to the bed and pulled the blanket off it, holding it to herself protectively as Molly, Lupin and Moody entered the room. She was frightened now. Her leg hurt like hell and the adrenalin she had last night was gone.
“Please. Just let me go.” She pleaded. I wont go back to the house. Well, only to get my things. Then I’ll be gone, I will. I’ll be gone and you’ll never see me again.”
She watched them all as they stood watching her. They all had sticks in their hands and Lou knew those sticks could do a lot of damage.
“This is ridiculous.” Severus growled. “For goodness sake girl how many times must I say it. No one is going to hurt you.” He drawled his words out slowly.
Lou turned her eyes to him. “I’m not thick, you don’t have to talk to me like that. Tell them to put those sticks away, you too. They bloody well hurt they do.”
Everyone lowered their wands slowly as Lou looked from one to another. “Are you gonna let me go now?”
“What’s you name dear? We can’t keep calling you girl.” Molly spoke softly and took a step closer.
“Lou.”
“Lou, that’s a nice name. I’m Molly Weasley. Do you have a last name Lou?” Molly kept taking steps toward her as she spoke, the men staying where they were.
“What do you want? Why am I here?”
“We don’t want anything, apart from to keep you safe. You did a very brave thing last night Lou. You saved the life of a very good friend of ours, now we would like to repay that kindness.”
“Well let me go then.”
“It’s not as simple as that Lou.” Molly told her as she sat on the bed Lou was standing next to. “You see, you hurt some very bad men last night. Those men are gone now, but unfortunately more will come. By now they will know about you and will be looking for you, we need to keep you here so they can’t find you. Please, sit down, I promise no one will touch you if you don’t want them to.”
“But I have to go back. My things are there, and I have to go to work tomorrow. Mr Key’s expecting me, he has my sandwiches. I have to go back.” She rambled, desperate to get away.
“Someone will arrange to have your things brought for you. As for sandwiches, we have plenty of food here so there’s no need to worry about that. I can even lend you some clothes until yours arrive, how’s that?”
“But my job, I need that job.”
“I’m afraid I can’t help you with that one Lou, but you will be well looked after while you are here. I promise.”
Lou let out a defeated sigh and sat down cautiously on the bed, as far away from Molly as she could. “How long?”
“How long what dear?”
“How long do I have to stay here?”
Molly looked to the others for help now.
Moody spoke up. “It all depends. There’s a lot happening right now that you don’t need to know about, but as soon as it’s safe you can go.”
“Right. So I’m here indefinitely, and when I do go I’m homeless and jobless. Thanks a lot.”
“That’s a rather ungrateful attitude you have young lady.” Moody told her.
Lou stood and looked at him, took in his appearance. A lump of his nose was missing, his face was badly scarred and one of his eyes was spinning madly in it’s socket.
“”I don’t wanna be grateful to anyone, I can look after myself, and stop doing that thing with your eye.”
Moody’s eyebrows raised in surprise. “Your a cheeky little brat, I’ll give you that, and while I’ve no doubt you’re able to look after yourself in the muggle world, things here are a lot different.”
“Yeah? Well I might not have a stick or a spinney eye thing, but I clobbered them blokes good and proper, and I might do the same to you if you don’t leave me alone. And what the hell is a muggle?”
“I think Alistor, it might be best if you waited downstairs. You too Remus.” Molly told the two men at the door. “This is new to her, she’s frightened.”
“No I’m not, I’m not scared at all. I just want to go. I don’t want to be here, wherever here is. You still haven’t told me where I am.”
Severus closed the door on Moody and Lupin and warded it. He was not risking the girl getting past him and escaping.
Turning, he glared at Lou, and was slightly impressed when she glared back with equal intensity.
“Now young lady, we can do this the easy way or the hard way. It is entirely your choice, but I am going to look at that leg of yours. So which is it to be?”
“Oh come on Severus. I’m sure she’ll let you take a look at her now.” “Wont you dear?”
Lou looked at the woman as if she were mad. Her head spun when she saw Mr perv make his way toward her. Her leg was hurting really bad and she felt sick.
“I’m warning you, keep away.” She backed away from the bed, only to fall back onto the second bed behind her.
“Shit.” She shouted as pain shot through her right leg. Her hand instinctively moved to her injury and she pulled it back when she felt something warm, wet and sticky. Her hand was covered in blood and when she looked down the whole right side of her nightgown was red.
Her mouth opened in a silent ’O’ of surprise as she watched a small puddle of red begin to spread around her feet.
Lou flinched when the tall dark clad form of Mr perv stepped up to her. He pressed her back onto the bed, lifted her feet onto the mattress and ripped the nightgown from hem to waist.
“No. Don’t. Please don’t.”
Not up to arguing with the girl any longer, Severus flicked his wand at her and said, “Immobulus”
Lou felt like she was frozen to the spot, which of course she was.
“I did warn you.” Severus told her as he rolled her slightly to her side. “Molly, hold her in position will you.”
Molly sat near the head of the bed and gently but firmly, held Lou so she would not roll onto her back.
“It’s alright Lou, the Professor will stop the bleeding and then let you go again. Don’t be frightened, we all want to help you, nothing more.”
After spelling away the dressing, Severus poured wound cleaning potion into the wound, wiping her leg with a towel as he did.
Lou let out a strangled “umph” as she felt it stinging deep inside her leg.
“I know it hurts.” Molly told her. “But soon that will stop and you’ll feel much better, I promise.”
Next he poured in copious amounts of the mertlap essence to heal it. Severus and Molly watched as the lesion once more began to close. This time he added a light sticking charm to the closure as an added precaution, before applying a fresh dressing.
Molly went to get some of Ginny’s spare clothes from the wardrobe. Severus turned his back while Molly used her wand to clean Lou, remove the ruined nightgown and dress her in a skirt and jumper.
“There you go.”
“She’s dressed Professor.”
Severus turned back to face Molly. “Thank you Molly.”
“Now, if I release you, are you going to behave yourself? I do not wish to keep repeating this procedure more than is necessary.”
“Mm hmm.” Was about as much as Lou could manage. The pain was wearing of but she still felt light headed and sick.
Severus released her, half expecting her to try and jump from the bed.
“I am pleased to see you are sticking to your word.” He said, turning to leave as Molly laid the girl back.
“Professor, she’s very pale.” Molly studied Lou, placing a hand on her forehead. “Cold too, I don’t think she’s too well”
The Potions Master turned and noticed the girls grey pallor. “Molly, have you a blood replenishing potion here? I did not have chance to bring any with me.”
Molly nodded and left to retrieve the potion as Severus took her place beside Lou. She’d lost more blood than he’d originally thought, hence her lack of colour and sudden lethargy.
“You need to take one more potion and you will feel a lot better, but you need to rest that leg while it heals. This mornings little escapade has set you back to where we started. You will be walking with a stick for a while until it is fully healed.”
“Here we are Professor, there’s plenty more downstairs if she needs it.”
“She will Molly, and thank you.” Severus placed an arm under Lou’s shoulders and raised her enough so she could drink.
She offered no resistance and drank the potion. It took only minutes before colour returned to her cheeks and the glazed look left her eyes.
“Thanks, what was that?” Lou asked as she was laid back against the pillows.
“A blood replenishing potion. Do you feel better?”
“Yeah. You told the truth then? You really are a wizard. Those stick thingies, are they …you know, wands or something?”
“I did, and I am. Molly here is a witch, and yes, these are wands.”
“Wow, so can you do tricks and things? Pull rabbits out of hats and stuff?”
Severus looked at her appalled as Molly burst out laughing.
“Why in Merlin’s name would a rabbit be in a hat?” Severus demanded.
Molly laughed even harder. “It’s what muggle magicians do Professor. Hermione once told me about muggle magicians; they do simple tricks with cards and birds. It’s not true magic though, just illusions.”
“Absolutely preposterous if you ask me.” He gruffed.
“Yes well, preposterous or not, I have breakfast to see to. Do you need me any more Professor?”
“No thank you Molly.”
“I only asked.” Lou told him. “So what’s the difference then, and what’s muggle?”
“You are a muggle.” Severus told her. “Non magic folk are known as muggles. The difference is obvious, we can do magic and you cannot.”
“Bet I could if I had a wand. Hey, I took one off that first bloke I floored, what happened to it?”
“That wand was snapped, along with the other three. It was of no use to you.”
“How do you know? I could’ve done what you do with it.”
“No you could not. A wand will only work for the person for whom it was made. Besides, as a muggle, any wand would be useless to you.”
“You still didn’t have to break it. It was mine, I got it fair and square.”
Severus rolled his eyes and stood. “Would you care for some breakfast? I am hungry, so you must be.”
“Yes please, but I haven’t got my money with me, I can’t pay for it yet.”
“You are a guest, there is nothing to pay, besides, I owe you.”
“Too right you do. You chucked me out of my home and you had no right to.”
“Had you stayed gone, you would not be here now, complaining.”
“If I’d stayed gone, you’d be dead mate.”
“That is true, and I am grateful. It is the main reason I did not leave you behind.”
“Grateful enough to let me go home now?”
“No, you shall stay here. The decision is not negotiable.” Moving to the bottom of the bed he removed something from his pocket.
Before Lou realised what he was doing, a metal band was clasped round each of her ankles.
“Hey, what are they? Take ‘em off.” She yelled at him furiously as she bent her good leg and tried to remove the silvery looking band.
“They can only be removed by magic. One is to prevent you from leaving this building without me, the other will tell me exactly where you are in the house at any given time.”
“What? You can’t do that, I’m telling.”
“You may tell whoever you wish. Everyone here is in agreement that you must wear them.”
Lou was heartbroken. She felt like a criminal and she hadn’t done anything wrong.
“Please take them off, I don’t like them.”
“They stay on.” he told her. “I cannot trust you to do as you are told and I do not wish to chase you down the street should you take it into your head to flee.”
“I wont I promise, take ‘em off.” Her eyes filled with tears and she turned away from him, determined not to let him see. “You said I wasn’t a prisoner and then you do this. Well I bloody well feel like one now.”
“It was not my intention to make you feel that way.” He told her more gently. “But like it or not they are for your own safety, they stay on. Now tell me, how old are you?”
“Old enough to look after myself.” Lou said sulkily as she continued to pry at the band on her left leg.
“And how old would that be exactly?”
“I’m nearly sixteen.”
“How nearly? When was your last birthday?”
When she gave a muffled response, he took hold of her hand and removed it from her ankle. “When?” He growled.
“My birthdays next month. July 31st. But I manage fine, or I did till you came along.”
“So you are only fifteen? Why are you not at home with your parents? You are too young to be living alone in a derelict house.”
“It’s better than the alternative, and I don’t know where my parents are. I never have.”
“The alternative, and what would that be?”
“Never you mind, it’s private.”
“Very well.” He would have a word with the Headmaster. Perhaps Legilimens would be in order. “What is you surname? I take it you do have one.”
“Yeah but I’m not telling it to you, you’ll tell the authorities and have me sent back. Well I’m not going.”
“Wherever there is, but I have not intention of sending you anywhere at the moment. Now, breakfast I think.”
Taking a candle from the shelf, he transfigured it into a walking stick.
“Cool, what else can you do?”
“Many things, but now is not the time, come on.” Passing her the walking stick he held out a hand to help her up.
But Lou being Lou, and preferring to be independent, she ignored the hand. Instead she grabbed the bedrail, using it and the walking stick to pull herself up. She stood, wobbled, and fell back on the bed.
“Shall we try again?” he asked. This time he took her arm firmly, and pulled her gently to her feet, not letting go as she teetered once more. “There is no shame in accepting a little help on occasion.”
Lou preferred not to answer, but ended up leaning more on the Potions Master than the stick as they made their way slowly onto the landing. When she saw the stairs she paled, knowing she wouldn’t make it down.
Before she had chance to think further, Severus scooped her up and made his way down the stairs.
“Urgh. What on earth are they?”
Severus turned at the bottom of the stairs to see what she was referring to. He gently placed her on her feet, still keeping a hold of her arm. “House elves, at least they were. Those are just the heads.”
“What?” She asked quietly with a nervous laugh.
“House elves. They do look rather grotesque don’t they? Though I dare say you will think the same thing about Kreatcher, and he is still alive.”
Lou stared at him with her mouth open as he slowly walked her to the steps that led into the kitchen. Once again he picked her up and carried her down the steps, kicking the door open with his foot and striding in. Placing her down once more, he pulled out a chair at the long table and helped her into it before taking a seat himself.
“Hello dear, you must be starving.” Molly said brightly waving her wand, two plates drifted across the room and landed in front of Severus and Lou.
Both were piled with bacon, eggs, sausages and toast. “Eat up, there’s plenty more, so you might as well tuck in before the rest come down.
Lou stared from the plates to Molly and back to the plates again, her eyes as wide as saucers. “The rest?” Lou asked, awestruck at how the breakfast floated to her.
Severus, who was already eating, pointed at her food with his knife, indicating she should eat.
Lou speared a sausage and was about to bite into it when a teapot and cups landed on the table, seemingly under their own steam.
She tried to ignore the rest of the goings on and ate her food ravenously. She purposely didn’t see the sugar bowl and jug of milk that landed near her. Just as she purposely didn’t see the teapot tip itself up and fill their cups as a teaspoon stirred in the cups. It was all too weird for her, but the more she tried to ignore things, the more things that kept happening.
