Chapter 3
Draco was brought to one of the most lavish doors in the castle. The castle was actually fairly easy to navigate compared to his own labyrinth of a home. It may only have been a moderate castle but he was sure that it was at least partly paid for with Harrietta's inheritance.
His first set of knocks received no answer. As were his second set.
He slowly opened the door and found the reason for this. Harrietta seemed to be waking from sleep, he had a feeling that was his fault. He stood awkwardly by the door, "Miss. Potter, I'm sorry to have woken you."
She smiled as she rubbed the sleep from her eyes. "Call me Etta, please?"
Draco had made his way to her bed and stood in front of as she swung her legs in front of her. He took her gloved hand again and kissed the back of it. "Of course."
"Did Father agree? Is that why you are here? Or are you rejecting me once more?" she asked smiling coyly, clearly expecting the former.
"Actually your uncle did not agree to the courting rites. But -"
"Oh. Okay. Well, I- suppose it's not completely unexpected. I mean if he was just going to say yes to every body no one would need to ask, I- I respect his opinion- and... I..." she was upset enough to finally lose her ability to speak.
"Please, let me finish. This is difficult to say, and to explain. I implore you to listen... and to have an open mind." She choked on a laugh at this point and seemed close to tears over that fact that with all the men running from her that her uncle would be sending any away, especially when he had promised to cooperate. "Your uncle seems to have different views on how your life should be led. And by different views, I mean ludicrous ideas. One of which is that you should no longer be allowed to court any longer. He would rather you be married without any of the rightful procedures. I suspect this is one of the reasons men often refuse you, in order to not tarnish their family name."
"But- he wouldn't do that! He promised!" Harrietta was now pacing while Draco landed on her bed in order to get out of her way. "He loves me! He knows what it means to me! I want to do it right! The right way! I- deserve... I - want it..." she turned to Draco "Why can't it be done right? It's barbaric." She finished as she slumped back into her seat next to a shell shocked Draco.
Really he should not have been as shocked as he was. Women do tend to become hysterical over silly things like tradition. "Well, yes I suppose it is. You see... " He wasn't sure she was going to see this the way he had after that tantrum. Perhaps he should've found a way to talk to her before signing all those papers. "The thing is, there were other such ridiculous stipulations, and really he was not treating you in the way I feel you deserved to be. I'm afraid I may have been a bit rash in trying to help you. So please try to understand me."
"Understand? Understand what?"
"I agreed."
"Agreed? You agreed to what?" Oh now she was steaming.
"I agreed to - the stipulations. To - his requests- to the marriage." Draco was fairly sure he sounded ridiculous. "I was afraid of what he must be doing to you in here. Of what he planned for you, those requests were outrageous. Surely they were only put there to make it impossible for you to ever leave here. To be under his mad rules- I just- I wanted to make sure that you were okay, so I signed the contracts and-"
"Were there witnesses?"
"What?"
"When you signed. Were there witnesses?"
"I ... yes, your aunt, uncle cousin and the solicitor. Why would that - " it seems somehow that the fact that there were witnesses had done it. Because she was crying.
"When - when - d-do we leave?" She choked on nearly every word that escaped her as wet eyes implored him for an answer, although he didn't understand the question. He was never very good with women. Never.
"I- we?"
"When do we leave?"
And he suddenly understood her, although he was still very confused. "I don't know, whenever the marriage rites are complete, when your uncle-" She was shaking her head at him as if he was wrong, as if you still did not understand.
"Father - he doesn't - it's your decision now. You are my, my husband." She tried to smile but seemed to give up in the middle of it as she turned to marvel at the carpeted floor beneath her bed, leaving Draco to figure out what she was saying as he stared at the back of her neck where sparse hairs had fallen after leaving her elegant bun.
Husband. She said husband. He had been neglectful of the proceedings in favor of getting out of the room quickly enough to speak to Harrietta. Witnesses - father of the bride, mother of the bride, the groom, the official, and a witness to the proceedings. Harrietta was still young, her say was not necessary. Draco had stolen her wedding from her. He had stolen the happiest moment in a women's life away from her. He may not understand women, but when his mother used to gush about perfect weddings he understood. Understood that a woman would live a life of complete misery if only she was beautiful at her wedding.
"I'm sorry."
"When are we leaving?" She didn't want to talk about it. But her constant tears said it all.
"Whenever you want. Whenever you're ready."
