  • Hermione woke the next morning to Snape prodding her gently with his hand and telling her to wake up. She groaned, her legs felt weak and she toppled out of bed, landing at the feet of her professor.

“I’m sorry,” she said wearily, groaning again as he helped her rise to her feet.

“We are going to see the Headmaster today. I’m sure you’ll find this visit rather…exciting,” he said slowly, raising an eyebrow and turning on his heel, expecting her to follow him.

The two of them made their way out of the dungeons and upstairs into the Headmasters Office. They met face to face with the familiar Gargoyle and after Snape gave the password, they spiraled up the staircase and met face-to-face with a jubilant looking Dumbledore.

“Good afternoon Severus, Miss Granger,” he nodded his head politely to the both of them before offering them seats across from his desk. The same spots they had in fact sat in not long ago. The two of them sat there awkwardly, looking everywhere but each other before the Headmaster spoke once more.

“I trust that all is going well?” He asked politely, taking a seat across from the two of them, eyeing both Hermione and Snape. He took notice that they seemed to be sitting uncomfortably. Dumbledore gestured towards a bowl sitting in front of them and offered, “Lemon drop?”

Snape firmly said no and Hermione just shook her head. She glanced over at Snape who looked rather irritated before he sighed and spoke.

“All has been well, though of course, we have only just practiced the art of being an… acceptable Occulmens,” he said, and at this, he turned his head to look at Hermione, eyeing her carefully before turning back to the headmaster. “And soon we shall attempt to master the spells she may need in the mere future.”

“Very good,” Dumbledore said quietly, standing once more to pace the room. Stopping frequently at which where Fawkes stood quietly, his head leaning into the soft touch that Dumbledore so often gave him. He turned abruptly to face them once more. “I believe it is only necessary for our guests to arrive at this time, don’t you think so, Severus?”

Snape said nothing, but his lip twitched slightly before footsteps were heard in the back of the room.

Hermione whipped around to meet the faces of Harry and Ron who, seemed just as excited to see her and she ran up to Harry and hugged him. She also hugged Ron who tried to protest, but gave in, hugging her back.

“Bloody hell, Hermione,” Ron said, his face slacking in exasperation, “You gave us a right good scare.”

“I know,” Hermione replied, a genuine smile spreading across her face for the first time in days, even weeks it felt like. “Maybe you should sit down.”

The three of them sat before the headmaster, taking in the story of which had happened previous nights before, and about the condition she was in now. Dumbledore told them of how Snape would be curing her but she noticed he skipped the fact that she was currently staying in a portion of his rooms. The spell in question of course, they did not understand, which left Snape sitting with an utter look of disgust planted across his face. Dumbledore kindly explained to him that she was very weak, both inside and out. No one noticed Snape make faces, except Hermione of course, for she seemed to be the only one to be watching him throughout their conversation. She wanted to see exactly how he felt about her staying with him. Irritated, bothered, and distracted of course, but his face did not say much. She simply sat and listened, watching him, and turning her head when he looked over, and only spoke when spoken to. There was not much for her to say.

“So we won’t be seeing much of you then, Hermione?” Harry asked, half-hopefully that he would still be seeing Hermione.

Hermione shook her head, and took Harry’s hand in hers for comfort. “I’ll see you when my health allows it. Until then, you and Ron will have to at least try and stay out of trouble.”

She thought she heard Snape snort at this, but she did not look towards him. She could feel his gaze staring steadily down upon her. Hermione let go of Harry’s hand and stood up, facing Dumbledore.

“Thank you sir,” she said firmly, before turning on her heel and walking out of the headmaster’s office.

Hermione felt a few tears sting at the edge of her eyes. She missed Harry and Ron very much, but that did not stop her from storming out of Dumbledore’s office and making her way back to the dungeons. She did not pay much attention to anyone who might have passed, but her mind was busy with so many thoughts that she did not care. How was she going to keep up top marks from missing so much school?

She was almost to the dungeons when a voice behind her called for her. She turned around to find herself staring squarely at Professor Snape, who she realized, must have been calling after her for some time.

“Is there something wrong with your ears?” He snapped, his chest heaving breath in faster than it normally did. He must’ve run to catch her when she left Dumbledore’s office so abruptly. “What do you think you’re doing?”

Hermione looked at him and said thickly, “Going back to the dungeons, Professor.”

Snape just eyed her, before sweeping past her. She followed him quickly and when they reached the doorway of his rooms, they swung open when he placed his hand upon it and she stepped inside behind him, actually welcoming the feel around her. It was surprisingly warm in side of his chambers. A lot warmer than the rest of the dungeons were. Hermione sheepishly took a seat down on one of the arm chairs before Snape turned to look at her once more.

“I have a powerful spell which Dumbledore wishes me to teach to you,” Snape drawled, pulling his wand out of his pocket and summoning a glass of tea towards him. “If, of course, you are feeling up to it, may we proceed?”

The agitation in his voice made Hermione’s blood boil. She didn’t wish to be here anymore than he did, but she at least didn’t act like a bloody git about it.

Standing wearily, she pulled out her wand and looked straight into his eyes with determination and said, “Teach me.”

Snape eyed her carefully; he seemed to do this a lot, before placing his cup down on the table beside him. He flicked his wand and the furniture in the room scooted hastily onto the sides of the room against the walls. He stepped forward, a few feet in front of her and stopped. “The spell we are going to learn is called Repello Pravus. Repeat after me.”

“Repello Pravus,” Hermione said steadily, gripping her wand so tightly that she could feel her hand begin to sweat.

“Good enough. This spell is very powerful, and if used correctly, is exceedingly well in repelling dark arts. It casts a shield around you, rather like a patronus, and knocks your opponent backward, sparing you a few seconds of extra time if you are in grave danger. I trust that you will use it well.” He stopped and took an extra step closer to her, making Hermione cringe with nervousness. “I want you to imagine that I am someone that has been exceptionally evil to you in your past.”

Hermione almost grinned. Had she been Neville, or any other Hogwarts student that wasn’t in Slytherin, she would’ve pictured Snape himself. But Snape hadn’t been especially cruel to her. She could think of plenty more dark, evil people. But then she stopped. He wanted her to use on him, right here, and right now?

“Sir,” she began slowly, “I don’t know—”

“Miss Granger, if you are to succeed, you must do this. Now cast the spell,” he sneered, folding his arms.

“Fine,” she huffed, straightening out her shoulders and staring him dead in the eye. All of as sudden he turned into a snake, thick, long, and hissing, gliding across the floor to take a bite out of her. The walls around her turned into a greenish purple haze of swirling colors, and the snake began to slither towards her, calling her name. Hermione felt her heart rate quicken and her knees locked and began to wobble. Her vision blurred and she felt as if she might pass out when she raised her arm and screamed, “Repello Pravus!”

For one glory filled moment, she thought the spell had been cast, but the next thing she knew, she was looking up at her Professor, her eyes wide and full of a terror as tears escaped freely from her eyes, running down her cheeks.

“An acceptable attempt, Miss Granger. I was sure you wouldn’t have mastered it the first time around.”

Hermione wasn’t even sure if she heard him. She stared into his eyes, but didn’t really look at him. She was gazing beyond him, as if into some other world. The tears would not stop running, and she didn’t plan to get up any time soon.

Next thing she knew, Snape’s cloak billowed behind him as he turned away from her. She could hear him rustling in one of the cabinets that were in the room, and he returned suddenly with a vial in his hand and Hermione sat up on one elbow and looked up at him.

“Drink this, and you’ll feel better,” he said, handing it to her.

She drank it down as quickly and she could and handed it back to him. Hermione got to her feet, slowly but surely, and wobbled. Snape turned to face her again when she asked, “What happened?”

Snape pursed his lips before tilting his head to look at her, as if puzzled. “You seemed as if you were going into some sort of fit. What exactly was it that you saw, Miss Granger?”

Hermione stopped. How had he known that she had in fact seen something? Something that was not normal? It was because you passed out on his floor, you idiot. Of course he knows something. Her eyes narrowed away from him, but then returned his gaze. “A snake.”

“A snake?” he inquired, as if seeing nothing but a snake was no reason worth passing out for.

“Not just any snake... it was snake, coming after me. It wanted me. It wanted to hurt me, not kill me just... hurt me. I think he wanted more than just death,” she said, biting her lip gently, her mind wandering to what this could mean.

Snape just stared at her before turning to make his way towards the table by the fire, where his cup of tea sat, steaming. He turned and waved his hand for her to come over, and she obeyed, making her way next to him. He thrust a glass of tea into her hands and told her to sit down.

Hermione sat in the arm chair by the fire, across from the other arm chair in which he occupied. He studied her for a minute before taking a sip of his tea. Snape seemed to be lost in thought as he looked from her to his tea, and then at the fire. His face was always expressionless, but she could sense his thoughts.

“I know the Dark Lord wants me, sir, but I want you to help me fight,” she said, gaining all the courage left inside of her to tell her pallid, bat-like Potions Professor that she needed him for something.

Snape just looked up at her, his eyes not leaving her face. She stared back into the black orbs that seemed to mesmerize her. And in that moment, she wondered just exactly what he was thinking. When she thought he would say nothing at all he spoke.

“Drink your tea, Miss Granger,” he said quietly, just above a whisper. With that he took a sip of his own before getting up to pace around the room. Hermione watched him move back and forth across the floor, which was still bare, the furniture pushed against the walls. He stopped then. “Grab your wand. We are going to continue.”

Hermione just stared at him incredulously and didn’t get the point until he barked at her to stand up and get her wand. He moved to face her when she passed him, watching her as if she were his prey. His eyes were full of malice, full of determination.

“It does not end here, Miss Granger. The Dark Lord possesses weapons you do not. It is time now for you to fight. Raise your wand!” he roared, and Hermione flinched, raising her arm. It was shaking slightly. “I want you to try once more, to hit me with the curse. I want you to imagine the snake very clearly in your mind, and attack it. And mean it!”

Hermione swallowed, her arm was shaking viciously now, as she stared at her Potions Professor. She felt her legs begin to wobble once more, and again she saw the snake, coming after her.

    Hermioneeeee, it hissed.

She clenched her hands shut, trying to gain some control of her wand, still held out in front of her. Clenching her teeth she screamed, “Repello Pravus!”

The next thing she knew, a great flash of yellow light beamed out in front of her, and she looked up in amazement. Her bushy curls were flowing behind her back as she stared at the snake that was tossed up from the light and thrown against the wall. It was when the yellow light of the spell ceased that she realized it had been her Professor she had thrown against the wall, not the snake.

Her jaw flew open upon at the sight in front of her. The Potions Master lie motionless against the arm hair, his hair splayed across his face. Hermione ran up to him quickly and got to her knees, pulling out her wand.

“Rennervate,” Hermione muttered hoarsely, her wand pointing at his face. His eyes flickered open slowly and he looked up, his eyes flashing with anger, but then he sighed and rested back upon the chair.

“Well done, Miss Granger,” he grunted as he hoisted himself up off of the floor. “Were you in Slytherin, I may have awarded you house points.”

Before Hermione could say another word, he disappeared into his rooms for the evening.

a/n: another Latin term for you all, Repello Pravus is latin for Repel Evil, I'm just making these up, they aren't actual spells ;)
