Dumbledore sat quietly in a chair next to the hospital bed where James lay. The younger wizard had been completely unconscious for four days now. The doctors were completely stunned because they hadn’t expected him to make it past the first night. Dumbledore wasn’t surprised though. This wasn’t the first time his adopted son had survived something that should’ve killed him instantly. A small smile came to his face at the thought of the first quiddich match at the beginning of James’ sixth year. James had been showing off as usual and had completely lost control of his broom, slamming hard into the ground.
Dumbledore liked to believe that good things usually came out of bad things. After all, it was only after the quiddich accident that Lily Evans had admitted her feelings to James. If she hadn’t screamed out what she felt in the hospital wing, would they have ever gotten together? So even though things looked bad, the white haired wizard was determined to believe that something good was going to come out of all of this.
His thoughts were interrupted by a soft groan. It seemed that James was finally awake! Dumbledore felt both excited and apprehensive as he patiently waited for James to regain his senses.
James just lay there for a few moments, trying to remember who and where he was. The beeping sound in the background told him that he was in the hospital, but why? Then it all came back to him. His eyes snapped open and he looked up at Dumbledore silently asking the questions he was afraid to ask out loud.
“Lily is gone,” the elder wizard confirmed his worst fear.
“And Harry?” he asked weakly.
Dumbledore paused for a moment, not sure how to answer that question. Harry was already at the Dursley’s. “Harry is in a safe place.”
“Where?” James shouted, trying to sit upright, but falling back in the bed wincing in pain. The monitor beside the bed indicated that his heart rate was increasing at an alarming rate.
Dumbledore reached inside his robes and pulled out a glass vial containing a calming potion. “Drink this,” he said, handing it to James.
James knew what the potion was, and a tint of red flashed in eyes. “Why?” he asked suspiciously.
“Because I can’t have you flying off the handle. You’re recovering from very serious injuries.” He had brought the potion because he knew there was no reasoning with James when he was angry. Only Lily and Sirius knew how to calm him without the aid of a potion, but of course neither of them were around anymore.
Luckily for him, James took the potion and swallowed it in one gulp without a fight. It took effect immediately, and James no longer looked like he wanted to murder someone. He was relaxed, and his heart rate had returned to normal.
Dumbledore took a deep breath and proceeded to explain everything. James remained completely calm the entire time, which was probably only because of the potion. Though the emotionless mask was purely James being James. Dumbledore wished more than anything that James would cry or… something. Bottling everything up the way he tended to do was self destructive. And again, his anchors were no longer available. Yet, Dumbledore told him the truth about everything except where Harry was.
“Why did you already take Harry to the Weasley’s?” James asked, his voice strangely calmer than Dumbledore expected.
“Because I had to take quick action,” Dumbledore explained. He wasn’t lying about that; he had done what he knew would be expected of him.
“So I don’t even get to say goodbye… I didn’t die, but I have to leave everyone and everything behind because you think it would be best if I disappeared…” Despite the potion, he was getting angry again.
The elder wizard gave him an empathetic look, and reached out to brush a lock of hair out of his face. “I’m sorry, but don’t push off all the blame on me. You know as well as I that you can be a loose cannon at times. You’ve just been through a very traumatic experience, and it would probably be best if you were out of the picture for a while.”
“How long?” James asked, pushing his adopted father’s hand away.
Dumbledore went quiet. He didn’t want to answer. “As long as it takes for the dust to settle,” he finally answered.
Severus had gone to visit his good friend Lucius over the Christmas holidays. When he had arrived Narcissa told him that her husband had gone to the Ministry and would be back soon. She sent him to wait in the parlor and had a house elf bring him some tea while he waited.
Lucius arrived home a few hours later in a very fowl mood. “How did it go?” the potions teacher asked even though he already knew the answer.
“I hate Albus Dumbledore,” the blonde grumbled and took a seat in one of the chairs, pouring tea for himself.
“So he’s still keeping tight lipped about where the boy is then? Honestly Lucius, why do you want to adopt Harry so badly anyway?” Severus couldn’t understand what had come over his friend ever since he convinced the Ministry that he wasn’t a Death Eater. Actually, he hadn’t really convinced them of anything. It just seemed that Fudge, the new Minister, had been given some evidence in that particular case that he wasn’t sharing with anyone. It all seemed rather strange.
“Because I can give Harry a good upbringing,” Lucius answered. “James would bring him along sometimes, and I got a little attached. That, and if I can’t have the original… I mean, wouldn’t it be nice to at least have a piece of James around?”
“Only if he takes after his father,” Severus answered. “As for me, I have the feeling that I’m going to end up teaching the brat when he’s old enough. I also have the feeling that fame is going to turn him into an insufferable attention seeker. I’m not looking forward to it.”
Lucius sighed and took a few more sips of his tea. “I’m not looking forward to him coming back into the wizarding world either. Who knows what the people who are raising him are going to teach him. And since Dumbledore placed him there, the foolish old wizard is going to have complete control as always. Why do you think I told James to keep our relationship from that nosy old coot? I didn’t want to deal with being hounded.”
“I understand completely,” Severus agreed. “There are days where I regret going to him. Are you going to be all right Lucius?”
The blonde nodded. “I just have to accept the fact that I put my faith in a liar. James promised me that everything would be all right. But my father was right; love is for fools. I made a mistake falling in love. I’ll just have to learn from that mistake.”

A/N: Thanks to everyone who left a review. It really does brighten up my day. I’m glad that you are enjoying my work. And yes, the reason Dumbledore took James to a muggle hospital is that he didn’t want anyone in the wizarding world to know that James was still alive.
And special thanks to my betas who polished up these last two chapters for me.
