Part III:
“Severussss… I am not pleased, Severussssss… it seems as if you are bound to continually fail me.”
The hissing grated in his ears as it always did and he began bracing himself for what was to come. But it would be too late for Voldemort, no matter what happened to him now. He had set his own plan into motion before coming here. If things had gone as they should, the Order was already in the tunnels under this house, coming to take the Dark Lord by surprise.
Severus smiled viciously back at Voldemort. “Perhaps it is not I who have failed you…Tom Riddle…”
Voldemort’s already narrow eyes slitted further. “Why Severusssss…whatever could you be implying?”
Voldemort flicked his eyes behind Severus and Severus felt strong hands grab his arms on both sides that then began dragging him forward.
Professor Severus Snape had been called many things in his time, but cowardly he was not. He took a breath as he was dragged forward, but almost felt relief that the time to bring his duel nature to light. His only regret would be leaving her….no he wouldn’t think of her here, he wouldn’t give the Dark Lord that pleasure. He allowed himself one last quick thought of the last night he had spent wrapped in her arms in pleasure, before closing that part of his mind off entirely.
The summons had come early in the morning. He had awoken to find her still curled in his arms, her soft breasts pressed into his side, her thigh tossed over his. He had allowed himself one, perfect moment of joy to realize that it hadn’t been a dream, that this perfect creature had chosen to take him as a lover.
The summons had started burning through the mark and he hadn’t had time to do anything other than press a last kiss to her soft lips, throw some robes on and apparate away. She would be better off without him anyway. She would find someone else one day, someone who was better for her than he was. But she had been his, for one brief, perfect night. There were worse ways to walk to one’s death. He was grateful that the gods had given him one last gift to carry with him into the darkness. He had loved and sacrificed everything for Lily, but Hermione had, for one brief, shining moment, reminded him of what it was like to actually live for something other than revenge and pain.
Severus continued smiling. It felt like a bitter, twisted smile, but it was about all he had left to give. He had known that this would be his end, but if it left the world a better place for her to thrive in, then he had no regrets.
Voldemort seemed taken aback by Severus’ lack of fear or instant groveling for forgiveness. This was very unlike Severus, who would normally do anything to stay in Voldemort’s good graces.
Severus braced himself as Voldemort raised his hand. Severus knew what was coming, he also knew that it wouldn’t end this time.
“CRUCIO!!”
It took Severus a second to realize that nothing had happened.
It took Voldemort a moment longer to realize the same thing.
Voldemort snarled and screamed again. “CRUCIO!!!!”
Still nothing happened.
The situation quickly deteriorated from there. Voldemort continued screaming curses at Severus. Whoever had been holding him in place had disappeared without a sound, leaving Severus standing in front of the nearly crazed (at least more so than usual) Dark Lord, looking as bewildered as the rest of the Death Eaters who had been waiting to see the end of one Severus Snape.
Snape couldn’t understand why he wasn’t on the floor screaming in agony as the Dark Lord slowly and surely took him apart, as he had meant too.
Voldemort seemed to be nearly frothing at the mouth. Severus, as unaffected as before, managed to close his gaping mouth and lift his wand to start the complicated spelling that he and Dumbledore had decided upon if this chance ever came his way.
Voldemort didn’t seem to notice Snape doing anything at all at this point and dimly, somewhere behind him, Severus heard the Order crash through the doors.

Several hours later….
It was over.
Voldemort was a crispy pile of scaly ashes by the chair he had originally been sitting in.
Harry had collapsed after the final explosion had finally cleared.
Snape stood as unscathed as he had started out. He felt bewildered. He was supposed to be dead, or at least in excruciating pain.
And where was she?
He looked around frantically, seeing the gruesome remains of most of his former associates and many friends as well.
People were rushing around, trying to help those who were down and helpless and gathering up the remaining Death Eaters.
The house that they had originally been in had been blown to bits within the first few minutes. They had ended up out on the moor that surrounded the house. Oddly enough, Voldemort’s chair still stood on a bit of Persian carpet in the wide open.
Things had progressed fairly quickly once Harry had made his way to the severely weakened Voldemort.
Severus felt the panic begin to set in. He grabbed the first person he came across, not even thinking about how odd it must look for him to be looking for Hermione Granger.
“Wotcher, Snape? Hermione stayed behind to coordinate movements. She’s at headquarters”, exclaimed Nymphadora Tonks.
Snape felt a moment of pure relief, before he realized that he hadn’t let go of Tonks yet.
He let go and turned in a swirl of black to disapperate back to Headquarters. Let others clean up the mess. He had done his part, it was time for him to finally get what he wanted.
__________________________________________________________________________________
He arrived to the house to find it engulfed in as much activity as the site of the actual battle.
People rushed here and there, grabbing medical supplies and other necessities to carry back with them. Aurors, who had appeared with the Order, were as numerous here as at the battlefield as well. Mad Eye Moody stood overseeing it all.
He still didn’t see her.
The panic he had felt before began leeching back into his chest. He stopped and tried to remember how he could open his mind to search for her whereabouts.
What had she done, the silly little girl?
He threw his consciousness out, looking for her and found absolutely nothing.
Again he grabbed the arm of a passerby to enquire about Miss. Granger.
This time he managed to grab Mrs. Weasley.
“Hermione? It was the oddest thing. The Order had just left to follow you when Hermione grabbed herself and started screaming like someone had crucioed her. I’ve never seen anything like it and it just got worse from there.”
Mrs. Weasley paused as if trying to find the words to continue describing what had happened.
“We finally took her to St. Mungoes, it was like she was being cursed with every sort of horrible curse imaginable.”
Severus felt the blood drain out of his face. That’s what she had done. That silly, stupid little Know-It All. She had made it so that everything sent at him landed on her instead.
She had been right. It had allowed him to do what he needed to. He had been able to act as if nothing was wrong with him, because it had all been reflected from him to her.
Gods.
This time he went straight into St. Mungoes and started terrorizing the staff until someone finally led him to her too still, nearly white form, on a narrow cot in a far off corner of the spell damage ward.
They had put her into a controlled coma. They said they didn’t know what else to do to stop her pain. The nurse said that a team of doctors had had to stand by her side and deal with whatever damage had magically begun appearing. No one seemed to understand what she had done.
They quickly left him alone with her. Seemingly uncaring as to why someone such as him would have any business frantically searching out one of his students. Of course, they were still dealing with casualties from the battlefield being brought in.
He reached out a hand that had finally begun trembling to caress her still features.
Everything that he had been holding inside, ever since the death of Lily, started flowing through him.
For the first time in his adult life, Severus Snape felt his knees buckle and an almost uncontrollable wave of grief for everything that he had suffered and lost in his life swept through him in one last astounding wave that forced him to his knees by her side, where all he could do was weep and pray that this once, just this once, he wouldn’t lose someone that mattered as much as she did.
A/N: Sorry this has taken me so long to update, but life keeps interfering! Thank you so much for all the kind reviews and I hope this satisfies. I had originally planned this to be a three part piece, but now there will be a fourth chapter to wrap everything up. Maybe if it all keeps going well, I'll try to start writing a longer, more in depth version.
I significantly edited the first three chapters, sorry for the delay!
