Chapter 3: Tempers flaring
Draco had no idea what to do with Potter. He talked to Mrs. Prokofiev in
order to kick the idiot out, but she seemed to be convinced she found him a
perfect flatmate. He’d try to throw Potter out himself, but when he got out to
work the man was still sleeping and when he came back, the flat was usually
empty. If Potter was home earlier than him, he made sure to fall asleep before
Draco’s arrival. There was no way to kick him out without letting him know,
right? The only way out was to wake him up, but each time Draco felt too tired
to prepare himself for a confrontation.
And after two weeks of this silent coexistence, Potter didn’t even care
to move from the sofa to his room! No, not his, the empty room. A big black bag containing likely all Potter’s
possessions lay unpacked under the small dining table. Along
with a couple of socks and dirty T-shirts.
That’s what made Potter’s presence in his flat so obvious – he almost wouldn’t have minded (he had
decided to put up with someone when paying the rent became barely affordable),
if it wasn’t for the awful mess. It made Draco flinch every time he looked at
the full kitchen sink, leftovers threatening to leap out of the bin, rotting
cheese left on the window sill for a week instead of being put back into the
refrigerator. He had no idea how Potter managed it, but bathroom was in an even
worse state. Draco was no clean-freak, though people often assumed so – he just
arranged things as neatly as he could at the time, but could live with a little
untidiness.
Not with the chaos Potter made.
So if there’s no possibility to talk him out of it, it’s time to take
drastic measures. He’d make the bastard’s life as unpleasant as it could be.
Step one – stop
cleaning up after Potter, Draco thought, smirking. Maybe he hated mess – especially the organic
mess his fantastic co-tenant made – but on the other hand, it’s going to be a
challenging watch, observing the bacterial cultures in the sink forming their
first civilization and inventing wheel.
*
Another week passed and Draco decided that step one failed. He assumed
too quickly that Potter was incapable of cleaning up. The smell coming from the
kitchen managed to reach Draco’s room, it was probably impossible to get some
sleep on the sofa in that case. So one morning he left the flat as a rotting
mess and in the evening he could remove “rotting” from the description. Time to think about step two. Wasn’t leaving Potter to mould
in pizza leftovers cruel enough? Then again, that man endured Muggle upbringing.
Maybe he was simply a survivor.
As much as he wanted to avoid it, he’d have to talk to Potter. If the
Slytherin way failed, it’s time to try the Gryffindor – something like yelling
“Get out!” would be in character, right?
One thing was sure – Potter had to leave if Draco was to stay sane. Last
three weeks were a time of constant irritation, stress and anger, all of the
same origin.

Harry came home at 8, knowing he’s going to risk seeing Malfoy. If it
was anyone else, he wouldn’t care and accommodate. It wasn’t that bad, having
somebody to live with, was it? He felt he can’t stand Ron’s daily interrogation
regarding how’s finding a new place going any longer, though. If Malfoy already
came back, he’s going to tell him he’s moving out as soon as he is able to.
Not warning him it could take ages at any rates. Harry didn’t want to
move out of London for a variety of reasons and finding a new flat for rent here
was becoming harder and harder every year. Of course, he could cheat, but some
very basic instincts told him against using magic on Muggles. Aside from
feeling wrong, it was plain weird – waving a several inch long stick in front
of bedazzled people not knowing what’s going on and where that nutcase came
from. Every Muggle-born he knew shared the same problem. They were too
self-conscious outside the wizarding world.
Harry slowly pushed the door open, readying himself for the upcoming
conflict.
An easily annoyed Malfoy awaited for him
inside.

Draco was sitting on the sofa, trying to forget who slept there and attempting
to read the evening edition of Daily
Prophet, a task hard to manage when most of his concentration was pinpointed
in some far area of brain, responsible for Potter-related impulses. Every time
he heard footsteps outside, he tensed up and took nervous glances at the door.
It wasn’t very rational, he shouldn’t expect the widely adored Boy-Who-Lived
before 2 a.m.,
but the anticipation was killing him. If it weren’t for the determination to
cut off from Potter most preferably forever, Draco would have been quite
disturbed by the amount of anxiety he was feeling.
Somehow, it didn’t even surprise him when he heard Potter coming in at a
very unusual time. He simply stood up and proceeded to the hall, wanting to
attack the enemy when he is more likely off-guard.
“Welcome home, Harry,” he said
mockingly. “How nice to have you back so early.”
“Missed me much, Draco?” Potter
replied in the same manner. “Am I to look ahead to a candlelit dinner?”
Draco would have laughed if he didn’t find Potter’s general attitude so
obnoxious.
*
They sat at the opposite sides of the dinner table in an almost
courteous style. Both began speaking at the same time, and after a few polite
“you firsts”, Harry fell silent and decided to let Draco speak. It was funny
how being well-mannered could help you manipulate your way through. Malfoy was
obviously better at it, too.
“Potter, we have to end this absurd situation now, it’s not going to
solve itself. You must have noticed your person is not welcome here, that much
should be obvious,” Draco scoffed. “I understand it is an unfortunate
coincidence and neither of us wanted it to happen. I’m not blaming you then,
especially since you’re kind enough to get out of my way. Nevertheless, I want
you out by the end of the month or you’re going to regret ever meeting me and
you won’t find your accommodations as pleasant as the are
now.”
“As if I’ve never regretted meeting you,” Harry snorted. If Malfoy
thought he’s going to achieve something by his little speech, he was terribly
wrong. Although Harry’s main goal in this conversation was to tell he’s moving
out as fast as he can and be left in peace, he felt his temper rising. It’s not
like Malfoy owned this place. They
were on equal ground. “You can’t kick me out, you’ve no right. Yes, I don’t
want to share this place with you. More, I acknowledge I’m the one who’s supposed
to move out. But I won’t have you hurrying and threatening me, Malfoy. If you
want me out in a week, you’ll have to help me find a new place. Preferably staying
as far away from me as you can at the time. And give me the advance money back, it’s only fair, right?”
“I’m not giving you a broken Knut. It’s not my fault you’re stupid
enough to pay for something on unknown terms and without seeing it.”
“Oh really? Then I guess I’ll make sure it
isn’t wasted. You’ll have to put up with me for, I dunno, four months? I hope
we’ll get along just fine,” Harry replied before realizing what he’s getting
himself into.
Draco stood up so fast his knees hit the underside of the table. Harry
thought he’s going to have another shouting outburst, but the only sound that
reached him was the
noise of slamming door.

Once again, thank you so much for all reviews! <3
Jay Ficlover: you kind of predicted the situation, but I guess it was
predictable – we couldn’t expect anything else coming from these two, could we
now? :)
I wanted this chapter to be longer, but I’ve got too much work going on.
Bad excuse, but at least this way I can update regularly.
