There’s silence at the bottom of the bottle, Draco though as he took his first swig of fire whiskey. The liquid burned his throat but settled nicely in his stomach. He wasn't ready to go through with the plan but he was a lot more ready than he had been before his first sip. The commotion outside slowly oozed away as he continued to drink. Hm, there really is silence down here. Draco put his eye to neck of the bottle and tilted the bottle up. A trickle of whiskey slid down the neck and into Draco's waiting eye.
“Arrrrrrrg!” Draco screamed throwing the bottle and clutching his eye. He heard the door fly open but his eye was burning too much to warrant opening it to see who it was.
“Draco what's wrong? What happened mate?” Blaise Zabini knelt at Draco's side and soothingly rubbed his back. Draco leaned into the touch and Blaise pulled him closer. He and Blaise had briefly been lovers before Draco had figured out that it was another dark haired wizard he wanted. Well really Blaise had figured that out and then politely informed Draco of his infatuation with the boy who lived. While the realization that the one you love is in love with someone else, even if they themselves aren’t aware of it, is always painful, Blaise had managed to contain his pain and had remained a great friend to Draco. Draco smiled remembering this through his haze.
“Oh dear you've been drinking haven’t you?” Pansy Parkinson spoke up from the corner where Draco had thrown the bottle. Draco gave her a sloppy smile and finally opened his eyes. Something was wrong everything was sideways! Draco shot up and the world came back into alignment.
“I've drunken way too much.” He admitted rubbing his temples. Pansy sighed and joined Blaise on the floor. She looked Draco square in the eye and cast a simple spell to tell the level intoxication in a person’s body. Pansy had firsthand experience with this spell as Slytherin parties always had alcohol and as prefect, she had always been the one to be tested for sobriety. Unfortunately she had never found a charm that would fake sobriety or even cure the effects of alcohol all together. 2.0. High by even adult standards. She sighed again.
“We can't let him face the Dark Lord like this Blaise. We'll have to reschedule.” Draco's eyes widened before his whole face fell. He fell back onto the ground and scrunched his face in order for the tears to stay in.
“Everything I touch turns to shit, ya know. Everyone I try to love won’t hear of it.” Blaise opened his mouth to protest but he decided that he should let Draco keep speaking not bring him even further into depression as a result of his own self pity.
“I mean I could give him everything. My hands are overflowing with things I'd like to, no love, to give him.” Draco curled into a ball and cried. “Does-humph- anyone want me?” He said through tears. Blaise once again opened his mouth but Pansy put her hand on his leg and shook her head.
“Look Draco, sweetie you can wallow later. Right now we have to figure out how to sober you up or reschedule.” Pansy said sweetly. She rubbed small circles on her best friends back. Draco rubbed his eyes and sat up gently.
“We can't reschedule. Sev has a plan to get me out of here tonight and however much I doubt his influence, if there is the slightest chance to be with him, I'll take it. Everywhere I look I see his face. I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I mean falling in love with a Gryffindor, let alone the golden Gryffindor? Oh I wish it was anything else.” Draco rubbed the back of his neck. His vision was still a bit hazy but he was sure he could manage to spout out whatever he was required to. What if this doesn’t work? He thought trembling. Then I have the dark mark and any chance to be with him is gone. He reached for another bottle of fire whiskey but Pansy snatched from the table before he could reach it.
“No no. If we’re going to do this you have got to stop drinking.” Draco gave her a sour look.
“Pansy you aren’t my mo-“
“Look I’ve been mapping this whole thing out.” Blaise interjected. He took a deep breath. In a way he was responsible for Draco’s situation, as he had been the one to put the idea of being in love with Potter in his mind in the first place. “Being drunk shouldn’t be that much of a problem. You don’t really have to say anything. So just work on keeping your mouth shut until the end of the ceremony, then you’ll have to pledge your allegiance, but don’t worry you should sober up by then.” Draco nodded silently as Pansy helped him into his robes. He really was a sight to see. His body was toned from quiditch but Draco had worked hard to keep himself slim and not bulk up like Crabb and Goyle. Everyone knew that the stronger you were physically and magically the faster Voldemort recruited you. All three friends were talented beyond their years but had wanted to continue school, so they had perfected and worn shields that bound their magic and hoped know one would notice them. Draco quickly combed his hair and gave himself the once over. He looked like shit. He hoped Harry wasn’t part of the raid; he couldn’t stand to have his love see him in such a mess.
With a large sigh Draco motioned that he was ready and his friends followed him down the stairs. Narcissa was waiting at the bottom trying hard to conceal a smile. Draco found it slightly amusing that she would be so happy to see her son condemned to misery. The dinner hall was dimly lit with only candles held by the many death eaters that lined the path to Voldemort lighting the room. The ceilings look twice their actual height in the dimness, the air felt heavier as if all the people had sucked in all the oxygen and there was none left for Draco. Get used to it, Draco thought grimly. If tonight doesn’t work, this is what you’re stuck with. As Draco continued to walk the route created for him the Dark Lord came into view more with every step. He was at the end of path and he sat in Draco’s father’s favorite chair and smiled maliciously at the three friends.
Pansy tightened her hold on Draco’s arm. It was painful but Draco knew he couldn’t afford to show any weakness. Blaise However was even less emotional than Draco, he stood tall and proud. Blaise had made a big choice attending this meeting even though his family had taken a neutral stance. What he needed now was to show the Dark Lord that he was proud of his family’s decision and was only there to support Draco. They’re taking huge risks for me, and then Draco exploded inside. What would happen to his friends? Severus had never said anything about kidnapping them as well. Would they be punished would this whole ordeal end with him in the lights custody and his friends dead? Draco panicked. There would be nothing left for me to miss, he thought.
He felt as though the room was closing in on him as he continued to worry about his friends’ fate. The air already heavy seemed to be nonexistent as he reached the podium. Pansy and Blaise stepped back and Draco almost turned to look at his friends one last time but Voldemort clasped his chin and leaned closer to the boy.
Voldemort, with the help of many potions, had been reverted back to the handsome dark haired twenty something he had been. But his eyes were empty. Yes they had beautiful chocolate irises but behind them there was nothing. Draco fought the urge to avert his eyes. He couldn’t stand to stare into something that…dead.
“Welcome Draco. I cannot tell you what a pleasssure it isss to sssee you again.”
His breath smelled like rotting flesh and Draco had to swallow his own bile to keep from puking. Slowly the Dark Lord drew his wand and motioned for Draco to extend his arm. Shakily Draco gave his soon to be lord his left arm. I wonder if this is how I pay for the times I hurt people carelessly, Draco mused as Voldemort began to wave his wand over Draco’s arm.
“Sssay you pledge our loyalty-ee to meee.” This was it Draco thought. Nothing had happened no brave order member had shown up and scooped him up. This is what he was doomed to for the rest of his life. He turned to look at his mother and Severus. They both stood stone faced. There was no indication that anything surprising was about to happen. He then looked his friends, Pansy was crying and even Blaise’s eyes sparkled with wetness. Draco took a deep breath in and out.
“I pledge-” A huge crash from the skylight and glass rained down. Everyone looked up as 5 blurs on broom sticks swooped into the crowd firing stunning and expelliarmus charms. Voldemort stood letting go of Draco’s arm. This is it, Draco thought, it’s really happening.
Draco ran to his friends who were quickly throwing up shields. One blur halted in front of them. Draco recognized the blur as George Weasley, the other half of the Weasley twins. He smiled wildly at Pansy.
“Wanna ride, babe?” He said laughing. Another blur glided in beside him. This one was expertly riding backwards throwing cruses in front of them. Draco knew who it was before it stopped.
“Harry…” He whispered.
“George! There’s no time for that! Grab Parkinson and go!” His voice was strong and deep and his muscles flexed in the heat of battle. Draco felt his pants grow tighter. Pansy looked at Draco unsure of what to do. Draco nodded and she clumsily got on Georges broom.
“Come on, Malfoy. We don’t have much time.” Draco took a deep breath and looked at his mother one more time. She was watching him in astonishment as he joined Harry on his broom. Their bodies were so close it would have caused a scandal even if they were just normal people. But they weren’t normal, and Draco had a feeling they never would be again.
“Hold on.” Harry breathed as he took off. And Draco did hold on tighter than he was sure was comfortable for Harry but he didn’t really care, because he was being saved by his own personal hero. Oh Harry we have so much time to forget.
